Director Zé Celso directed the stage production of the source play in 1967, then started filming the play in 1972, but had to discontinue due to lack of funds and political pressure. Following a political exile, he resumed the project in 1979 for three more years of filming, joined in the last year by co-director Noilton Nunes. They finished in May 1982 with a three-hour long film that was then edited to its final length.
