Lilly Wachowski-Produced Trans Identity Film ‘Dolls,’ by Geena Rocero, Unveils Trailer (Exclusive)
Image
Geena Rocero is making her mark behind the camera. The four-time Emmy-nominated director’s scripted directorial debut, sci-fi short “Dolls,” has dropped its first trailer ahead of its world premiere at Oscar-qualifying festival Out on Film in Atlanta, where it will screen in the Out of This World section.

Variety is exclusively unveiling the trailer for the film, which boasts Lilly Wachowski, co-creator of “The Matrix,” as executive producer.

Featuring Rocero in the lead role with Yên Sen, Arewà Basit, Macy Rodman and Vas Eli, the film centers on a private investigator who infiltrates a trans women’s dating seminar. As mysterious threats emerge during the workshop, the protagonist finds solidarity within the group.

For Rocero, the director behind documentary series “Caretakers” and author of “Horse Barbie,” the project represents a deeply personal creative endeavor.

“‘Dolls’ is my attempt to birth the internal chatter that ruminates in my head,” Rocero said.

Last Chance to Watch This $134M Cult Classic with a 90% Audience Score Before It Leaves Netflix

V for Vendetta caused quite a stir when it was released, criticized and praised for its commentary on social issues like censorship and politics. For better or worse, the film's layered themes still resonate in the present, fueling discourse on divisive topics.

V for Vendetta is leaving Netflix on Sept. 1, but there's still time to revisit the film, especially for fans of the graphic novel. Adapted from Alan Moore's namesake DC comic, the 2006 film depicted a bleak and dystopian near-future set in a totalitarian state. Writers Lana and Lilly Wachowski (The Matrix trilogy) took creative liberties with the source material, drawing inspiration from fictional literature and historical events. The...

Manhattan Project (1986)
Colorful Stage! The Movie: A Miku Who Can’t Sing review – candy-haired popsters put on a show
Manhattan Project (1986)
A garbled story of metaverse musicians based on a mobile game leaves its audience little to grasp hold of

Even by the standards of franchise anime that caters to the faithful and drops newcomers in blind, this is particularly incomprehensible. Based on the mobile game Hatsune Miku: Colorful Stage!, it features a barely characterised blur of wannabe musicians and actors who ascribe Manhattan Project importance to writing syrupy J-pop. As they interact with virtual counterparts in metaverses called “Sekai” created from users’ emotions, the film is like The Matrix if Neo had huffed a nitrous oxide canister before having every edition of Pop Idol downloaded into his cranium.

One of the virtual pop stars,...

The Fantastic Four: First Steps Worldwide Box Office — Outgrosses An 83%-Rated Johnny Depp Blockbuster
Image
The Fantastic Four: First Steps Worldwide Box Office (Photo Credit – Instagram)

Despite talk that The Fantastic Four: First Steps hasn’t become the massive blockbuster many fans expected, it has still outperformed the MCU’s earlier 2025 releases — Thunderbolts* and Captain America: Brave New World. With a global haul of over $475 million, the film is now expected to cross the $500 million mark, its break-even point against a reported $200 million budget. It remains to be seen how much profit it can generate beyond that figure.

Recently, the Fantastic Four reboot has outgrossed several popular films, including Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989), It: Chapter Two (2019), Godzilla vs. Kong (2021), The Matrix (1999), Gladiator (2000), and...

Alien: Earth’s Ties to Ridley Scott Come From the “Wrong movie”
Image
In a press interview, Timothy Olyphant was asked if Roy Batty from Blade Runner was an inspiration for his look in Alien: Earth, and he revealed that he indeed was (via ScreenTime/X). Noah Hawley, the creator, also commented on the same, talking about how the look was iconic. But he also made it clear that they didn’t want to establish any connections with Blade Runner in terms of story and shared universe.

Hawley joked that he’d tell his department heads about how “if you’re making the Blade Runner, you’re making the wrong Ridley Scott movie.” Yet he agreed to an “undeniable echo, aesthetically,” between Blade Runner and Alien.

Lauren Christy Wrote Hits for Avril Lavigne and Dua Lipa. Now She Warns of a “National Funeral for Songwriters If Things Don’t Change”
Image
“This is a labor of love for me,” says Lauren Christy. The hit songwriter — whose credits include Avril Lavigne’s “Complicated,” Bebe Rexha’s “Me, Myself and I” and Enrique Iglesias’ “Tonight (I’m Lovin’ You)” — is talking about the just-released collection Their Hits, My Way featuring her own interpretations of her greatest hits, but she could just as easily be referring to the profession of songwriting itself.

When Christy was coming up, first as an artist and later as part of production trio The Matrix, the economics of the craft were starkly different from those of today. In the ’90s and early 2000s, you could make a comfortable living from writing songs on a commercial release. Even if said song wasn’t a single, the proportional pay from an album cut — with LPs or CDs costing upward of $10 each — was not insignificant. “You could literally buy a house,” says Christy.

Willem Dafoe Didn’t Rehearse for His Best Scene in ‘80s War Movie That Keanu Reeves Turned Down
Image
Willem Dafoe’s tragic running scene in Oliver Stone’s powerful war drama, Platoon (1986), may have been very different. After all, Keanu Reeves had once auditioned for the role of Chris Taylor. But as Reeves rejected the role, it went to Charlie Sheen, who appeared alongside Dafoe in the heartbreaking death sequence that became one of the most unforgettable movie scenes.

In that sequence, Willem Dafoe delivered an agonizing performance with his arms stretched out as bullets tear him down. It became one of the most memorable scenes, which later earned him an Oscar nod. But it turns out, the actor confided in THR, that the scene “wasn’t really...

Rachel Brosnahan and Jon Bernthal’s New CIA Thriller Is #1 on a Surprising Streamer
Image
Rami Malek will always be remembered for his Oscar-winning performance in Bohemian Rhapsody, but earlier this year, he starred in a John Wick-esque action movie that is currently dominating a surprising streamer. Malek stars alongside Rachel Brosnahan(Superman) and Jon Bernthal (The Punisher) in The Amateur, the spy thriller following a CIA analyst who steps out from behind his desk and out into the field after his wife is killed, despite having no training. The Amateur recently began streaming on Hulu following a mildly disappointing box office run, and the film has been a major success, riding the #1 spot and yet to be dethroned.

In addition to Malek, Brosnahan,...

Andrew Tate Sues TikTok & Meta For $100M For ‘Deplatforming’ Him, Threatens To ‘Battle Every Single Girl Who Has Lied About Me’
Image
Self-described misogynist Andrew Tate is suing two social media companies for $100 million for kicking him off their platforms in 2022.

Nicknamed the “King of Toxic Masculinity,” Tate is facing rape and sex trafficking charges in Romania and the UK, as well as a criminal investigation in the USA. He was kicked off Twitter in 2017 and off TikTok in 2022 for promoting “hateful ideology.” Elon Musk allowed Tate to rejoin Twitter, renamed X, in 2022.

Tate has demanded that TikTok pay him and his brother, Tristan, who is also accused of multiple instances of rape, sex-trafficking and sexual abuse, $50 million each for “emotional distress, business interference, and misappropriation.”

The August 13 breach of contract and fraud filing in L.A. Superior Court stated, “This case arises from Defendant, TikTok, Inc.’s unlawful and politically motivated decision to deplatform Plaintiffs Andrew Tate and Tristan Tate—two internationally known entrepreneurs, commentators, and media personalities—from the TikTok social media platform.

Image
The Fantastic Four: First Steps Worldwide Box Office(Photo Credit –Facebook)

With a worldwide gross of nearly $470 million, Marvel’s The Fantastic Four: First Steps continues to hold its ground at the global box office. The superhero film currently ranks among the top ten highest-grossing movies of 2025. However, it’s unlikely to surpass other big-ticket titles like James Gunn’s Superman or Brad Pitt’s F1.

Despite not being a runaway blockbuster, the latest Fantastic Four reboot has still outperformed several other 2025 releases, including Captain America: Brave New World, Thunderbolts*, and Sinners. And now, First Steps is just inches away from outgrossing a hit monster movie at the worldwide box office. Read on to find out which one.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps Will Soon Outgross a Popular Monster Movie

When Will Smith Began Filming This Blockbuster Sequel With An Unfinished Script: “The Decision Sony Made Was…”
Image
Which Movie Did Will Smith Begin Filming Without A Finished Script?(Photo Credit –Instagram)

Back in 2012, Men in Black 3 kicked off production without a finished script, and somehow, it still turned out to be one of Will Smith’s biggest hits. Risky move? Absolutely. However, Smith and director Barry Sonnenfeld believed the studio’s bold play had merit.

In fact, Sonnenfeld stood by the chaos, saying (via Newsweek), “Starting the movie without an absolutely finished script is not normally the right way to do movies. But I feel the decision Sony made was the right decision. On this one, we might still be waiting for the script. Sometimes, if you just dip your toe in, you’ll never dive in because it’s too stupidly cold.”

That icy plunge didn’t stop Men in Black 3 from pulling in a cool $624 million worldwide. Sure, it didn’t match the pop-culture explosion of the 1997 original,...

Denzel Washington Starred in Forgotten Cyberpunk Russell Crowe Movie Solely for The Money
Image
Denzel Washington played the role of Lieutenant Parker Barnes in the 1995 sci-fi action movie Virtuosity, a critical and commercial disaster, the Oscar-winner admitted to doing only for a paycheck. In a conversation with The Interview, Washington stated:

Especially Virtuosity, that was… I had some bills to pay.

The actor jokingly added that he only signed on for the cyberpunk-inspired movie, co-starring Russell Crowe, because he had to pay tuition fees for his children’s education. As a result, Washington made it clear that he only joined the Brett Leonard-directed movie for a payday.

Denzel Washington Wanted Russell Crowe’s Role in Virtuosity

Along with Washington, the movie features Russell Crowe as Sid 6.7, a regenerating android made from the personalities of several serial killers. Virtuosity marked one of Crowe’s earliest Hollywood roles, before his Oscar-winning success with Gladiator.

Brandon Sanderson defends these highly debated sci-fi sequels: 'Just really cool'
Image
Highly acclaimed fantasy author Brandon Sanderson is tossing his opinion out on divisive sequels in the sci-fi genre.

Over on his YouTube channel, he joined the revisionist ranks and defended The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions, saying that he didn’t get the backlash and that they are “just really cool.”

“I like a bunch of the concepts from it, I like the action scenes, and I like it going full-on science fiction, and having the big battle with the monsters," Sanderson explained. "I don’t understand—I think what happened is, people had not had a lot of experience with cyberpunk, which I had when I saw The Matrix, [and] the ideas were not revolutionary to me. It was cool to see a big budget, action, sort of pop culture version of cyberpunk.”

Sanderson clearly took to the Wachowskis' expanded approach to world-building and the ways in which the...

Is This the Best New Way to Watch The Matrix? Reviewing Cosm in Dallas, TX
Image
The Matrix is one of those movies that has become timeless. It seems like Warner Bros. is always rereleasing the film in premium formats, from IMAX to Dolby Cinema and even 4Dx. The newest way to watch The Matrix is not at traditional cinemas, but at Cosm, which currently operates venues in Los Angeles, CA, and Dallas, TX. We at FandomWire got the opportunity to check out Cosm’s Dallas location, and we wanted to know: is this the best new way to watch The Matrix?

What is “Shared Reality” at Cosm?

The core of the Cosm experience is its Dome — a massive LED screen that wraps around the audience beside and above them to surround them with images. The venues are host to unique ways to watch sporting events, immersive documentaries created specifically for the format, and now popular films in the “Shared Reality” experience.

Why Laurence Fishburne's Dr. Raymond Langston Left CSI: Crime Scene Investigation
Image
Laurence Fishburne might be best known for his movie roles, but he's had a prestigious TV career as well. The actor has won six Emmy awards since he started back in the early 1970s and has appeared in a slew of well-known series, playing Cowboy Curtis in "Pee-wee's Playhouse," Jack Crawford in NBC's "Hannibal," and Earl Johnson in ABC's "Black-ish." Though he didn't win an Emmy for what was at the time his biggest TV role, Fishburne also starred in the CBS crime drama show "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" for multiple seasons, replacing the series' previous star William Petersen.

Petersen's Gil Grissom had been the series lead ever since the "CSI" pilot back in 2000. But with the actor set to depart the show in December 2008, the show's creatives pulled off a real coup by landing Fishburne as a replacement. The Oscar-nominated star of such classics as "Apocalypse Now" (which...

'Blade Runner 2099' Producer Offers Disappointing Release Update
Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne, Joe Pantoliano, and Carrie-Anne Moss in Matrix (1999)
Science fiction is a genre that can leave its audience in awe or can induce existential dread. While Keanu Reeves’ The Matrix is well known to make the audience question their reality, Ridley Scott’s original Blade Runner made fans ponder over what makes us really human. While there are no definitive answers, Denis Villeneuve elaborates on the themes of Scott’s film in his follow up Blade Runner 2049. Now, fans of the franchise are eagerly waiting for the Prime Video series Blade Runner 2099 to take forward the world built by the two directors. But it sounds like they’ll have to wait some more.

Blade Runner 2099 series is set fifty years after the events of the Villeneuve-directed film that starred Ryan Gosling. And while the movies had male protagonists, Harrison Ford and Gosling, respectively, the series will feature Euphoria star Hunter Schafer along with Oscar-winner...

Keanu Reeves' 'Sonic the Hedgehog 3' Is Climbing the Streaming Charts
Image
When thinking of Keanu Reeves, fans usually recall his action-oriented roles: from playing Neo in The Matrix franchise to the titular assassin John Wick to Speed and Point Break, the actor has entertained us with high-octane action. However, he has done some off-beat roles that are endearing and lovable, like voicing the titular cat in Keanu, Toy Story 4, The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run, and many more. One among them is now blowing up on streaming.

Per FlixPatrol, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is climbing the Prime Video charts. The movie that cast Reeves as villainous hedgehog Shadow is climbing the charts and is currently at the ninth spot among features like War of the Worlds, Wicked, Head of State, Twister, and more. 63%-Rated Movie That Killed a $3 Billion Keanu Reeves Franchise Revival Leaves HBO Max In 4 Days
Image
HBO Max is allegedly removing quite a lot of titles in August, and it would seem that one of Keanu Reeves’ most iconic franchises may be losing a soldier. It was posted on HBO Max’s subreddit that The Matrix Resurrections is leaving the streamer on August 9, potentially not being available for streaming for quite some time.

While there is no official confirmation of the same, it is very likely that the film is leaving the streamer. The biggest reason for this is the fact that it did not do very well with fans of the franchise. Although such reasons do not stop platforms from making films available for audiences, there are bigger reasons why rewatches of Reeves’ film are unlikely.

Natalie Portman's DC Comics Thriller Losing Its Streaming Home 20 Years After Leaving Theaters

Oscar-winning actress Natalie Portman has had a very diverse career filled with dramas, comedy, action, and more. The failed stunt caused a serious injury that led to multiple surgeries, forced him out of major stunts, and left him dealing with long-term trauma. Speaking in an interview, he opened up about the moment it all changed — from the faulty rigging to life after the fall.

When Leonardo DiCaprio’s First Movie Role Was Cut Entirely After He Botched Lines at Age 12: “My First Role, I’m Actually Not In At All”
Image
When 12-Year-Old Leonardo DiCaprio’s First Movie Role Was Completely Cut After A Line Flub(Photo Credit –Facebook)

Way before he was a global star, Leonardo DiCaprio faced an early setback on a film set. At just 12, the actor was given his first film role in Poison Ivy (1992), starring Drew Barrymore and Sara Gilbert.

Though the young star had a speaking part, his lines didn’t make it to the final cut. The young actor flubbed his monologue, and his scene was shortened. Later, it was completely removed during editing. Looking back, DiCaprio recalled how his feature debut ended without a trace. That moment, although barely visible, marked the start of a career that would soon turn into something substantial!

Liam Neeson’s Naked Gun Reboot Took a Wild Dig At One HBO Show’s Alum
Image
Liam Neeson is the last person to have an opinion on Sex and the City, but a promo of The Naked Gun reboot sees him call Samantha a strong word. Neeson replaced Leslie Nielsen in the iconic spoof comedy movie franchise, and though it was an unorthodox choice for the part, the very fact seems to be working for the movie.

The movie franchise thrives on stupid jokes told in a deadpan manner, and Neeson seems to have nailed the part. A scene with Paul Walter Hausen, a fellow cop on the same case, sees Neeson confuse the ‘Miranda Rights’ with ‘Miranda Writes’ and clarify that Carrie writes, Miranda is a lawyer, and (surprisingly) says, ‘Samantha is a h*e’.

Jack Nicholson's Chinatown Got Robert Redford The Lead Role Of An Oscar-Winning Movie
Image
Hollywood can be a capricious place, so there's truly no shortage of stories about actors whose starring roles changed seemingly on a whim. For every time a casting idea works out, there are dozens of "what-ifs," like when Val Kilmer almost had the role of Morpheus in "The Matrix" before Laurence Fishburne came along. When it came to the now-classic 1973 comedy caper "The Sting," however, there were a whole bunch of potential big name stars up for roles, and they all almost exclusively turned down the film. Since "The Sting" went on to win seven Academy Awards and has become quite beloved over the years, those actors who turned down roles might have some regrets about it... unless they happen to be Jack Nicholson.

Before he terrified us all playing Jack Torrance in Stanley Kubrick's "The Shining" or showed us how chilling a comic book villain can be as...

‘Transcending Dimensions’ Review: Inner Space Meets Outer Space in a Cosmicomic Phantasmagoria
Image
The path to enlightenment is a booby-trap-laden maze in “Transcending Dimensions,” which Japanese cult director Toshiaki Toyoda says may be his last feature. It can certainly be taken as a sort of summational statement, rounding up recurrent prior themes and motifs, though in ways constituting more of an advanced course than a handy introduction to his work. Even loyal fans may take occasional issue with a feature that’s by turns absurdist, philosophical, violent, wayward, satirical and baffling.

Still, the unpredictability and aesthetic appeal of Toyoda’s vision has its usual bracing effect. A precise point may be anyone’s guess, but getting there is a playful cosmic trip that justifies the lofty ad slogan “Enter the gate to the universe.” However, woe betide anyone expecting something so simply categorized as “science fiction” — though that is also how it’s being sold.

The deceptively tranquil opening finds a monk meditating in a cave,...

Gritty Clint Eastwood Spaghetti Western That Fans Love Is Now Free to Stream: “Such a brilliant movie”
La Cabane dans les bois (2011)
Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, except in the entertainment industry, where it’s usually recognized as copyright infringement. No matter how much you love a fellow filmmaker’s idea, that idea is their intellectual property and therefore protected under copyright.

Despite clearly drawn boundaries regarding matters of copyright, plenty of filmmakers have been accused of borrowing from an existing IP without consent from the rights holder. A number of epic films have faced accusations of copyright infringement. The Cabin in the Woods and The Matrix, to name just a few. In both of those cases, the suits were dismissed; however, things don’t always work out that way.

As it turns out, co-writer/director Sergio Leone played fast and loose with intellectual property laws when he made the Clint Eastwood Spaghetti Western A Fistful of Dollars, and he paid the price. Celebrated filmmaker Akira Kurosawa took in the...

Keanu Reeves' Cyperpunk Thriller Is Streaming Free Next Month
Image
Years before he was hooked up to The Matrix, Keanu Reeves starred in another pioneering cyberpunk thriller, and next month, you'll be able to stream it for free. Based on a story by William Gibson, whose seminal cyberpunk novel Neuromanceris about to get a long-awaited adaptation of its own on Apple TV+, Johnny Mnemonic will be available to stream on the free, ad-supported platform Pluto starting on August 1.

Johnny Mnemonic is set in the same fictional universe as Neuromancer, and shares a character, the cyborg "razorgirl" Molly Millions; in the adaptation, her cybernetic abilities have been toned down, and she's referred to only as "Molly." It was directed by video artist and music video director Robert Longo; it remains, to date, his only feature film. Gibson adapted his own 1981 short story; Johnny Mnemonic was the first of Gibson's works to be adapted for the screen. After numerous stops and starts,...

James McAvoy And Angelina Jolie's 2008 Comic Book Movie Is A Streaming Hit On Netflix
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

It's not Marvel. It's not DC. But a comic book movie is currently dominating Netflix's most-watched film charts. The movie in question is "Wanted." Released by Universal Pictures in 2008, it's a (very loose) adaptation of the Mark Millar and J.G. Jones comic book of the same name, which was originally published by Top Cow. Now, some 17 odd years later, it's finding new life once again thanks to streaming.

According to FlixPatrol, director Timur Bekmambetov's "Wanted" was trending in Netflix's top 10 charts all of last week, hovering between the seventh and ninth spots. It was, admittedly, no competition for Adam Sander's "Happy Gilmore 2," which is confidently in the number 1 spot, but it's still not bad for a movie that is nearly two decades old. The film starred a then-rising actor James McAvoy ("Atonement") in the lead role alongside Angelina Jolie,...

James Cameron Hints at Avatar TV Series to Further Expand the Epic Franchise
Image
Despite having Avatar: Fire and Ash and several other sequels in the works, director James Cameron is open to exploring Pandora beyond the big screen. The Oscar-winner recently hinted at a potential animated spinoff with unexpected stories.

Speaking with Empire, Cameron revealed plans for an Avatar animated anthology series, having approached Disney executives about the small-screen continuation. According to the filmmaker, the show would focus on stories that fall outside the narrative structure and character arcs seen in the movies. "I said [to Disney], 'Look, I want to do an animated anthology series that's essentially in the world, but stories that you wouldn't have expected from that world,'" he said. "There might even be an animated feature in there – it might be a feature for streaming, or a theatrical feature."

Cameron also said the series could explore "backstory on characters and tangential stuff that happened off-camera within the movies. Who first landed on Pandora?...

James Cameron teases the world of Avatar might not end with the movies
Image
Oscar-winning filmmaker James Cameron wants to open the door to a whole new dimension of the Avatar universe. One that stretches far beyond the breathtaking visuals and epic storytelling of the blockbuster films. While fans eagerly await the next installment in the five-movie saga, Cameron is already envisioning fresh ways to explore Pandora’s mysteries through animation.

In a new interview with Empire Magazine, Cameron reveals that he has talked to Disney about his plans to create an animated anthology series set in the Avatar world. But instead of just retelling what the movies already cover, he plans to explore unexpected, fresh stories within that world. He tells Empire that the potential series could dive into untold backstories of characters and explore the off-screen events that occurred within the films but were not shown on screen.

Cameron also mentions that the series might even include an animated movie, either released...

James Cameron Will Take Inspiration From 'The Matrix' for New 'Avatar' Spin-off
Image
James Cameron, the visionary director behind ambitious film projects like The Abyss, Titanic, and Aliens, has revealed his intention to expand the universe that he created with the Avatar franchise. While he has a road map of feature films that go all the way up to Avatar 5 in 2031, Cameron has plans to explore other formats and mediums while staying in the universe of Pandora and the Na'vi. It'll be a first for the filmmaker, as he's revealed that animation is the way to go for the planned spin-off.

The Terminator director is currently tweaking the third Avatar movie for its release in a few months. Avatar: Fire and Ash will land in theaters on December 19, 2025, and from what we've seen so far, it looks like yet another triumph for Cameron. He recently spoke with Empire magazine about the current status of the franchise, and where he plans to go...

James Cameron Open to Animated Avatar Anthology Series: 5 Bold Stories It Should Explore Next
Image
James Cameron revealed that he was interested in making an animated anthology series in his Avatar franchise as he released the trailer for the third movie, Fire and Ash. Cameron began the Avatar franchise back in 2009 and announced four more sequels, as well as other franchise media like comics, books, video games, and theme park attractions.

Cameron cited examples like The Animatrix, which expanded on the lore of The Matrix, as to how he would like to focus on individual stories in Pandora’s history. The Terminator filmmaker said that he had broached the subject with Disney, but nothing has come to fruition just yet (via Empire).

These are all great examples for how we can add texture and baroque detail to the world of Avatar…[It could deliver] backstory on characters and tangential stuff that happened off-camera within the movies. Who first landed on Pandora? The first expedition. You could go anywhere you want.
