In Darren Aronofsky’s latest crime-comedy film, Caught Stealing, the director planted an easter egg with a character name from After Hours, the 1985 classic directed by Martin Scorsese. In Caught Stealing, we see Griffin Dunne playing the role of Paul; the name “Paul” is a nod to the actor’s history from Scorsese’s classic movie. Paul Hackett is the male lead in Scorsese’s ’85 film.

There are a handful of neat little references throughout Darren Aronofosky's latest film, "Caught Stealing." Most of these have to do with the film's chosen setting, New York City in 1998. There's a moment when the film's protagonist, Hank (Austin Butler), walks by Kim's Video, a famous destination spot for NYC cinephiles during the '80s and '90s. There's the various music and culture references sprinkled around, from Hank's roommate Russ (Matt Smith) being entrenched in punk culture to the huge number of needle drops used. There's even a neat little self-referential aspect to the film's setting, as 1998 was the year that Aronofsky's debut feature, "Pi," was released. That movie...

It’s last call at Paul’s, the dive bar down the block from Benny’s Burritos on the corner of 6th and Ave. A, and folks are getting rowdy. The year is 1998. The place is New York’s Lower East Side, before the danger was fully leached out of the boho-hipster paradise; back then, the neighborhood may have lacked the scuzzy allure of its post-Horror City iteration back in the late 1970s, but it’s still edgy enough. The dude ringing the drink-up bell is Hank (Austin Butler). He...

Darren Aronofsky has been making movies for nearly 30 years, and for nearly 30 years it seems like he’s been angry at the audience for watching them. The typical Aronofsky joint is emotionally turbulent, often to the point of actual nausea. And while some are more accessible than others, he’s never been terribly interested in cutting us some slack and modulating his tone. His bleakest movies, like “Requiem for a Dream” and “Mother!”, are indistinguishable from panic attacks and anxiety nightmares. His most enjoyable movies — if you can call them that — are still pretty damned bleak. Unless you’re like me, and you were so desperate for Aronofsky to cut...

In an era where Hollywood is always looking for the next big reboot, what better place to find a piece of brilliant undiscovered IP than a store stuffed with some of the most obscure VHS tapes ever made? That’s not exactly what brought Caught Stealing co-stars Austin Butler and Zoë Kravitz to Kim’s Video Underground at the Alamo Drafthouse in Lower Manhattan, but after digging through the stacks with Rolling Stone film critic David Fear, there may just be a Gymkata remake in Butler’s future.

Inside filmmaker Darren Aronofsky there are two wolves.
One wolf yearns to make mainstream entertainment that is accepted by the critical establishment and the moviegoing masses. The other wolf is more fussy, more artsy, able to turn even the most commercial concept into something idiosyncratic, offbeat and, occasionally, downright alienating. It’s the tug-of-war between these two wolves that makes him such an exciting filmmaker. You can see them tussling right before your eyes.
“The Whale” in 2022 chronicled a morbidly obese man eating himself to death, but was a sleeper hit (making nearly $60 million on a budget of just $3 million) and won Brendan Fraser an Oscar. In 2014 “Noah” was a...

Famed for intense dramas like Black Swan, the director’s latest film is a riotous retro crime caper. He explains why he’s battling TikTok – but embracing AI
Darren Aronofsky’s new film is a blast from the past; a half-cut retro tour of late-1990s New York. Beetling around the tatty East Village, casually framing the twin towers downtown, it lifts the lid on a time that has been and gone: when the city was a melting pot of miscreants and misfits, when lowly bar staff could still afford Gotham rents, and when every car came equipped with a cigarette lighter. “Don’t they have those any more?” says Aronofksy,...

It has been exactly 40 years since Martin Scorsese dazzled us with a wild, untethered journey through the underbelly of NYC in the course of a single night in 1985’s After Hours. Thus it is no accident, and certainly a form of homage by director Darren Aronofsky to include that film’s star, Griffin Dunne, in a small supporting role in his latest, the East Village-set Caught Stealing, a surprisingly entertaining, almost lightly commercial movie from the filmmaker behind the likes of Pi, Requiem for a Dream, The Wrestler, The Whale, Black Swan, mother!, among other heavy dark dramas that have defined his career. Everyone needs a chance to loosen up and have some fun, and even though this is also quite dark in places, definitely violent, this one is end-of-summer relief from the real world Aronofsky often inhabits.

Darren Aronofsky has come full circle in a way, with his latest film, Caught Stealing, taking place in 1998, the year his debut feature Pi came out. With the movie set for an August 29th release, the first reactions have hit social media. So how does Aronofsky’s latest stack up? Check out some of the initial reviews – including our own – below.
By and large, much praise is being heaped on lead Austin Butler, who is fresh off of Ari Aster’s Eddington. Considering Butler has been on an absolute roll and Aronofsky’s last film, The Whale, nabbed Brendan Fraser a Best Actor Oscar (beating out Butler for Elvis), Butler could be an early favorite to be nominated in the category.
#CaughtStealing is one of the best movies of the year. A propulsive thriller that reminds me of the kind of classic indie thrillers made the year this is set (1998). Austin Butler has the goods.

The original "Magnum, P.I.," created by Donald P. Bellisario and Glen A. Larson, was a gangbusters hit that ran 162 episodes over its eight seasons from 1980 to 1988. The series starred Tom Selleck as the titular Thomas Magnum, a private investigator who, thanks to a special arrangement, lived at a palatial mansion in Hawai'i. Magnum also tooled around town in a very conspicuous Ferrari and was irresistible to women. He wasn't so much a TV character as a universal male fantasy personified. Beyond that, Magnum often butted heads with the estate's caretaker, an ex-military guy named Higgins (John Hillerman), but his life was pretty easy otherwise, and Higgins eventually became a friend. Both Selleck and Hillerman won an Emmy apiece for their work on the show.
The series was everywhere. "Magnum, P.I." even had a crossover episode with "Simon & Simon" in 1982, as well as one with "Murder, She Wrote" in 1986. Fun...

Emmy-winning actor Tom Selleck may be known to many as Frank Reagan from the long-running CBS police procedural Blue Bloods, but to a generation of fans, he will always be known as Thomas Magnum. New episodes of Selleck’s Magnum, P.I. have not been made since 1988, yet the series, which ran for 158 episodes from 1980 to 1988, is now being appreciated by new audiences on streaming.
According to FlixPatrol, Magnum, P.I. is currently the No. 18 show on iTunes. As of Aug. 9, it’s dominating shows like The Day of the Jackal, Billy Bob Thornton’s Landman, and The Outer Limits, which are in the No. 19, 20, and 21 spots, respectively.

Lifetime, branded as “Television for Women,” is all about empowering women. (Sometimes to kill their husbands, sure, but not always.) There is perhaps no better example of that mission than with 2010’s P.I. Moms. If only the show actually happened.
Fifteen years ago, Lifetime ordered a reality TV series about a private investigation agency staffed by soccer moms. In terms of synergy and branding, it was a no-brainer. In execution, it was a complete train wreck. (Hey, maybe that’s why it made Netflix’s excellent eight-episode series of documentary films, Trainwreck, produced by Raw.)
The Phil Bowman-directed episode chronicles how you go from having a hit show, and possibly a hit franchise, on your hands to having handcuffs on your wrists. That’s how it played out for the private-investigator firm’s owner and the P.I. Moms show’s fourth lead, Chris Butler.
P.I. Moms needed a good pilot.

In 2013, the world was enraptured by the story of the Carnival Triumph luxury cruise ship, which stranded 4,000 passengers without power and plumbing in the Gulf of Mexico after an engine fire. Guests were initially instructed to "go No. 1" in the showers and "go No. 2" in red biohazard baggies, but after four days, the raw sewage had become so backed up that social media was dubbing it the "Poop Cruise."
Now, Netflix's Trainwreck: Poop Cruise, from director James Ross, is chronicling every gory detail, from the tent cities to the squishing carpets. Warning: you will feel queasy when you get to the “poop lasagna” scene. But will Emmy voters embrace the program next year?

More than a year after CBS ended NCIS: Hawai'i, a cast member posted an update regarding the show's former set, which is likely to frustrate fans who were previously upset over its cancelation. CBS nixed the police procedural series from its programming schedule a week before its season 3 finale was to air. Consequently, the last episode of NCIS: Hawai'i season 3 doubled as its series finale. Many viewers were disappointed about the cancelation, sharing their frustrations on social media and through petitions to save the show. Unfortunately, their attempts were unsuccessful.
Jason Antoon, who starred as Ernie Malik in NCIS: Hawai'i, shared a video on his X account revealing what the Hawaii Film Studio in Honolulu looks like today (in June 2025). The post's caption reads, "Hawaii Film Studios - Empty and full of weeds," which just about describes the set's desertion. As some might know, CBS canceled the NCIS offshoot partly due to budget concerns.

The highly anticipated movie from filmmaker Darren Aronofsky, Caught Stealing, has it’s first trailer and a release date – August 29 – and I can’t wait!
From Sony Pictures, the film stars Austin Butler, Regina King, Zoë Kravitz, Matt Smith, Liev Schreiber, Vincent D’Onofrio, Griffin Dunne, Benito A Martínez Ocasio (Bad Bunny), and Carol Kane.
Aronofsky’s films, all psychologically intense and often surreal, include Pi (1998), Requiem for a Dream (2000), The Fountain (2006), The Wrestler (2008), Black Swan (2010), Noah (2014), Mother! (2017), The Whale (2022) and Postcard from Earth (2023).
Vanity Fair ran a first look piece in April:
Darren Aronofsky knew he was truly capturing the essence of New York’s wild and unpredictable nightlife when his new movie got hit with a sprinkling of urine.
The uncomfortable encounter happened last fall as Caught Stealing shot scenes beside a tenement in a New York neighborhood that’s famous for its boisterous and bohemian residents and club-goers.

Darren Aronofsky has launched Primordial Soup, a new venture he’s positioning as empowering filmmakers with AI-based creative tools.
Primordial Soup forged a partnership with Google DeepMind’s AI research team, and together they are working with three filmmakers to produce short films. Under the partnership, Google DeepMind is providing early-stage access to generative-ai video tools; conversely, the filmmakers are expected to provide feedback to the tech company on the new AI tools to help guide their development.
The first of Primordial Soup’s projects is Eliza McNitt’s “Ancestra,” which uses a mix of live-action performances and AI-based visuals, set to premiere next month at the Tribeca Festival. Primordial Soup’s two other films are in development. Details about those are Tba but both will use new applications of Veo, Google DeepMind’s video-generation model.

Netflix's adaptation of Stephen King's Cujo takes another step forward, with an Oscar-nominated director reportedly a top contender to helm the upcoming film. Released in 1981, King's novel of the same tells the story of a sweet St. Bernard family pet who becomes a violent killing machine after contracting rabies from a bat, trapping a mother and her son inside a broken-down vehicle outside a mechanic's shop. Cujo was adapted into a movie in 1983 from director Lewis Teague, and it was announced last week that another take on the novel is now in the works at Netflix.

There have been rumblings of a remake of the classic Stephen King adaptation Cujo for a long time – in fact, one was officially announced way back in 2013. In 2015, we heard that the remake had taken an unexpected turn, reimagining the name Cujo as an acronym that stood for Canine Unit Joint Operations. That project seemed to be scrapped when King got the rights to the story back in 2017… But last week, we learned that the Cujo remake has found a new home: the Netflix streaming service. And now, industry scooper Jeff Sneider of The InSneider reports that a director might be close to signing on to the project, as Darren Aronofsky is said to be in negotiations to take the helm.
Aronofsky’s previous directorial efforts include Pi, Requiem for a Dream, The Fountain, The Wrestler, Black Swan, Noah, mother!, and The Whale.

Katherine Kelly Lang is famous for her role as Brooke on The Bold and the Beautiful. However, the actress has had many other roles besides her soap opera role. When it comes to choosing which TV or film project to join, she has certain requirements.
A Good Script
Like many soap stars, Lang works on side projects whenever her B&b schedule permits. Throughout the years, she’s racked up many roles. Some of her other credits include the films The Christmas Dance and Stan the Man. She’s also had guest appearances on TV shows such as Magnum, P.I., and Neighbours.
Being a top star in daytime TV, Lang gets offers for many projects. As with any actress, it’s tough deciding which role to commit to. But, for Lang, she knows exactly what she’s looking for
In an interview with L’Officiel, she reveals that a good script is important in any project.

This week on CBS’ FBI (Tuesday, 8/7c), a romantic getaway for Oa and Gemma goes off the rails — perhaps literally? — due to the actions of a team of hijackers.
In the 14th episode of Season 7, titled “Hitched,” Special Agent Omar Adom “Oa” Zidan (played by original cast member Zeeko Zaki) and his girlfriend of over a year, Gemma Brooks (Billions‘ Comfort Clinton, in her sixth FBI appearance), are heading to Niagara Falls on a passenger train when it is hijacked and rerouted.

Actor Tom Selleck recently finished his long stint as Commissioner Frank Reagan on the hit police procedural series Blue Bloods. However, he is also known for playing Thomas Magnum in the 1980s crime-drama series Magnum, P.I. The series caused Selleck to turn down the Indiana Jones franchise despite being the first choice for the title role.

During an interview, Selleck reflected on being offered the role that eventually went to Harrison Ford. The actor recalled having just shot the pilot for the crime-drama series that turned him into a household name, which had him turn down the movie. Death was just the beginning for private investigator Juan Calavera, whose spirit is summoned on Dia de los Muertos to help the barrios of 1930s Los Angeles in the new comic book series Calavera, P.I. With the first issue of the supernatural noir now on shelves from Oni Press, Daily Dead had the pleasure of catching up with writer, illustrator, and colorist Marco Finnegan about looking at the familiar setting of Los Angeles through a different lens, teaming up with Oni Press for this new four-issue series, as well as the pulp and detective influences behind Calavera, P.I.
Thanks for taking the time to answer questions for us, Marco, and congratulations on the release of Calavera, P.I. #1! When did you initially come up with the idea for this comic book series?

S.W.A.T. fans have been through the wringer during the show’s eight seasons. Is it canceled? Or is it renewed? Do we know? Does CBS?
S.W.A.T is back for now, but some things are different. The new 20-Squad isn’t your grandparents’ version of S.W.A.T. How do viewers like the new look and the younger squad?
It works, but is it as good as it once was?
(Bill Inoshita/CBS)
I promise this isn’t a Toby Keith song. It’s a breakdown of how the S.W.A.T Season 8 is stacking up on what we’re certain (almost) will be the show’s last run.
Classic television shows like S.W.A.T., Hawai’i Five-o, Magnum, P.I., and Quantum Leap intrigue viewers across generational gaps.
The idea of a tough, highly-tuned police division keeping order in one of the country’s toughest cities has appealed to audiences for decades, starting in 1975. However, the...

Tom Selleck's Magnum, P.I. was one of the most beloved shows of its time, and those who wish it could return - generic remake notwithstanding - will be delighted to know that Apple TV+ finally has the perfect replacement 36 years after the crime show ended. Selleck's Thomas Magnum was one of the iconic TV characters that defined the 80s, and while it would take quite some doing for the show's modern-day equivalent to leave the same size legacy, that doesn't stop it from being a great spiritual successor.
The very fact that Magnum, P.I. ran for 8 seasons is just one piece of evidence that it was continually received very well. It may not be the greatest show in the world by today's standards, but some of the best procedural TV shows of all time arguably wouldn't exist without Tom Selleck's impressive stint as Thomas Magnum. The best Mark Margolis movies and TV shows include a strong mix of truly classic films and groundbreaking television shows that legitimize his place in Hollywood history. Margolis was trained by the best, learning under Stella Adler at the Actors Studio and then trained by Lee Strasberg, the teacher who mastered method acting. This led to Margolis getting his start in stage plays before finally moving on to movies in 1976. He then caught the eye of Brian De Palma, and the rest is history.
Margolis enjoyed an early breakout role in the De Palma classic masterpiece Scarface. That earned him enough attention to pick up supporting roles in several movies. His career took an interesting direction in 1998 when Darren Aronofsky cast him in his debut film, Pi. That led to Aronofsky casting Margolis in almost every movie he made after that until Noah in 2014. Margolis remains most known to younger...

What We Do in the Shadows is back for one last chaotic batch of episodes, with season 6 officially bringing an end to the FX mockumentary show. Season 5 concluded in August 2023, so there's been a bit of a wait since we last saw What We Do in the Shadows' hilarious cast. The previous installment featured Guillermo hiding out in fear that Nandor would kill him for becoming a vampire. Though they eventually reconciled, Guillermo's hesitations when it came to taking victims led Nandor to turn his former familiar back into a human.
The new dynamic between Guillermo and the vampires might be different in What We Do in the Shadows season 6, but that doesn't mean he will be out of their lives. Nadja and Nandor, in particular, ensure that Guillermo doesn't get a new job without their involvement. The final season will also introduce the group's long-lost fifth roommate, who they completely forgot about,...

Damien Leone’s “Terrifier 3” (Iconic/Cineverse) grossed about $27 million in the U.S./Canada in its first week. That will make it easily #1, helped by the second-week collapse of “Joker: Folie à Deux” (Warner Bros.), which will end up #4 with around $10 million.
The slasher/horror sequel will ultimately earn a massive profit. With a reported production and marketing cost of around $5 million and additional revenues, “Terrifier 3” investors could easily see profits far exceeding $50 million.
Apart from its cost, other elements leading up to the slasher film’s success are unusual. As with any sleeper hit, its successes will be examined by studios to see if they can be replicated.
If “Terrifier 3” does lead to major changes, it will follow the lead of John Carpenter’s “Halloween” (1978) and Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez’s “The Blair Witch Project” (1999). And not just in terms of its impact on the horror genre.

The Pradeeps of Pittsburgh offers a unique take on the family sitcom with Rashomon-style serialized storytelling and a delightful disregard for the "rules" of traditional sitcoms. The series follows the Pradeep family, Indian immigrants seeking a new life in America. However, when their neighbors' house is mysteriously burned to the ground, a pair of federal agents show up and interrogate everyone involved in an effort to discover the truth, no matter how hilarious that truth may be.
While Lost star Naveen Andrews plays Mahesh, the patriarch of the Pradeep family, the true power, as usual, rests in the wife's hands. To this end, Sindhu Vee plays Sudha Pradeep; a brain surgeon in India, she's frustrated that she can't get her medical license in America, which puts stress on her marriage to Mahesh. Meanwhile, Sahana Srinivasan plays Bhanu, the eldest of the three Pradeep children. Bhanu, a boy-crazy teen eager to...

In the "Magnum, P.I." episode "Laura", a retired NYPD cop named Sergeant Michael Doheny (Frank Sinatra) travels to Hawai'i for reasons he doesn't initially make clear. He hires Magnum (Tom Selleck) to help him track down the killers of a missing young girl, trying to close an unsolved homicide that took place in the Bronx. Magnum soon learns that the victim was Doheny's granddaughter, Laura (Kristin Brick), who had been kidnapped from Doheny's recent retirement party before being assaulted and killed. Magnum assumes Doheny wants the killers apprehended and jailed, but Doheny intends to kill the culprits himself.
In "Laura," Sinatra, then 72, gets to be fully out of control, beating up people in bars and yelling lines like "You slimy bastard. You beat her face to a pulp. You broke her body down to nothin' and then you threw her in an alley to die! And I'm gonna do the same thing to you!

Over the course of the past two decades, it's been proven time and time again that television is more than an equal medium to film. Although films were often treated as superior because of the notion of an auteur filmmaker, many acclaimed drama shows have succeeded thanks to the creative control of a singular creator. This is certainly the case for the neo-noir hacker series, Mr. Robot, which was written, produced, and primarily directed by Sam Esmail. The series style felt much closer to film classics like Pi and Taxi Driver than it did to anything else airing on the USA Network at the time. Although Esmails style was continuously subversive, Mr. Robot contained many standout episodes that changed up the shows formula.

Magnum, P.I. was a huge hit in the 1980s, giving star Tom Selleck his big break in Hollywood. Despite enjoying his time on the show, Selleck shared in his new memoir, You Never Know, that he disliked the show's title for one specific reason.

At that time, the title character's full name was also different, being Harry Magnum instead of Thomas Magnum. There’s a reason why Tom Selleck refers to the original Magnum, P.I. television series as just “Magnum” — and it has nothing to do with it being simple shorthand.

Mr. Robot is one of the most unique television dramas of the last several decades. While the notion of auteur-centric television has steadily been on the rise, Mr. Robot has the look and feel of a film made for the big screen. A majority of the episodes are written and directed by Sam Esmail, the shows creator. Esmail seems to be less influenced by current television dramas, as his style is deeply rooted in anti-authoritarian independent cinema. It feels strange to compare Mr. Robot to shows like Breaking Bad or Game of Thrones when it has more in common with films like The Matrix, Fight Club, Taxi Driver, Pi, and Blade Runner.

Unless you've been living under a rock recently, you're aware that movie theaters have been in a tough spot for nearly half a decade now, if not longer. Various factors have contributed to this, of course -- everything from the Covid-19 pandemic to the economy itself contributing to higher prices for a night out at the movies (especially for a family). Yet perhaps the biggest point of contention for those not fully inducted into the church of moviegoing is that old chestnut coined by Jean-Paul Sartre: Hell is other people.
Due to being at the tail end of several decades' worth of manufacturers and big box stores pushing home theater technology, the average living room theater setup tends to rival most generic movie theater screens in terms of picture and sound quality, with the convenience of the setup already being in one's home, away from loud talking randos and teens on their bright smartphones,...

Battleship and Ouija failed to live up to the cinematic potential of their board game origins, disappointing audiences. Films like Pi and Zathura successfully incorporated board games into their plots, creating unique and engaging movie experiences.
For thousands of years, board games have entertained and enthralled players of all ages and, because of this, they have also served as the inspiration for several great movies. From role-playing fantasy adventures to strategy-based puzzles, board games were excellent cinematic fodder as the existing worlds that they brought to mind were fleshed out with characters, storylines, and spectacular visuals in many acclaimed films. While film studios were often rolling the dice when it came to how successful a board game movie would be, every once in a while, they came out on top and emerged victorious.

J. Cole has issued a public apology to Kendrick Lamar for the diss track he included on his newly released project, Might Delete Later.
On the closing track, “7 Minute Drill,” J. Cole claimed Lamar had fallen off “like The Simpsons” and mocked his recent musical output. Cole rapped about Lamar, “Your first shit was classic, your last shit was tragic/ Your second shit put n***as to sleep but they gassed it/ Your third shit was a massive hit, that was your prime/ I was trailing right behind but I just now hit mine/ Now I’m front of the line with a comfortable lead/ How ironic, soon as I got it now he want something with me.”
Less than 48 hours after releasing the project, however, Cole was already expressing regret. Speaking during his set at the Dreamvillle Music Festival on Sunday night, Cole said, “I am so proud of that project,...
