Badass Ravi Kumar’s ending largely focused on [Spoiler Alert] Ravi Kumar delivering a precious diamond necklace to Carlos Pedro Panther, who wanted to give it to Laila. Now, Laila had an important reel full of pictures of confidential documents and whatnot that had been secretly procured by Carlos’ spies from the Indian government in order to deliver it to a rogue Pakistani extremist named Syed Bashir. Carlos would’ve gotten it directly and then handed it over to Bashir for a price, but Laila intervened and used the reel as her bargaining chip to get the necklace. Since Interpol’s Mahavir Ahuja and the Indian police’s Commissioner Awasthi want to stop Pakistan from gaining any kind of upper hand against India using that reel and disrupting the relatively peaceful atmosphere between the neighboring nations, they sent in Ravi Kumar. Given how Ravi Kumar didn’t know the location of the reel,...

Catherine Zeta-Jones talked about the welcome impact of winning an Oscar for best supporting actress in 2003 for Chicago on Friday while during an informal conversation at the Red Sea Film Festival in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
“It’s actually the beginning, because there’s the precedent, with your name being preceded with the Academy Award winning Catherine Zeta-Jones,” she told the festival. Zeta Jones was also pulled in two directions in having to choose between winning an Oscar and a best actress Tony, and which was more satisfying.
“To be acknowledged by the Broadway lights, that was wonderful. But the Academy Award was something that was totally unexpected. It blew my mind,” she insisted. But now aged 55, Zeta-Jones talked about stepping back and into an indie film world, well away from the commercial demands of a Hollywood she mastered as a film and TV star.

Catherine Zeta-Jones may have dazzled audiences in Entrapment, but one offhand remark from Sean Connery left her with a lingering regret. During filming, Connery’s casual comment about her fitting the mold of a Bond girl didn’t sit well with Zeta-Jones, who was determined to break free from stereotypical roles.

Despite her performance, the idea of being typecast as just a sidekick in the spy world rubbed her the wrong way. It was a moment that left her reflecting on the roles women play in action films. For Zeta-Jones, this remains a missed opportunity for something more empowering, and it’s a regret that sticks with her to this day.

When Sean Connery opened the envelope in 2003 for Best Supporting Actress, he simply pronounced the winner as “Catherine.” Such was the expectation of her win and the sensation she had caused in the film “Chicago” that his former co-star didn’t even feel the need to pronounce her full three names: Catherine Zeta-Jones.
Zeta-Jones initially was known to American audiences for her statuesque and striking beauty. She first gained notice on these shores in a television mini-series about the Titanic. The series aired a year before James Cameron‘s film of the Titanic story swept into movie theaters. She then began appearing on the big screen in a number of ingenue roles.

If shows like Oceans 11 or Leverage got you hooked on the perfect plan coming together through unconventional teamwork and heart, this series is for you. While paying homage to genre standouts, The Green Glove Gang puts its own spin on the “person with a past turns skills into a new purpose” trope.
Where many heist stories center on cocky criminals focusing solely on the take, this series humanizes its thieves. We learn their motivations through flashbacks revealing life experiences, not brags. Like Andy in The Shawshank Redemption gaining perspective through ordeals, time has given these women wisdom surpassing skill.
Season 2 sees their reluctant return sparked by loved ones in trouble, a callback to Sneakers exploring how family pulls outsiders back to dangerous lives. Yet intimacy, not payday, drives their planning. Scene choreography highlights discussion, not dangerous bravado, harkening to Leverage’s family dynamic over adrenaline.
Details will make aficionados smile.

A vitally important and visually stunning new graphic novel, Stamped from the Beginning: The Definitive History of Racist Ideas in America, adapts MacArthur Genius Grant winner Dr. Ibram X. Kendi's 2016 book of the same name. This new medium makes Kendi's acclaimed history book more accessible and digestible to a variety of readers.
Kendi is a National Book Award-winning historian and the founder and director of Boston University's Center for Antiracist Research. He worked closely with award-winning cartoonist and historian Joel Christian Gill to adapt Stamped from the Beginning into the graphic novel format. Warning: This article contains major spoilers for the second episode of "The Mandalorian" season 3.
What happens when we mythologize people and, more generally, the past? It's a question "Star Wars" has explored since its very genesis. In "A New Hope," Luke is partly spurred to join the Rebellion after hearing Obi-Wan's stories of his father, Anakin, and the Jedi. Yet, in "The Empire Strikes Back," the dark truth is revealed, and suddenly Anakin's legacy is no longer a source of inspiration for his son. The prequel trilogy only takes things further, exposing the failure of the Jedi Order to prevent Palpatine's rise to power and their greater complicity in Anakin's downfall.
"The Last Jedi" may have irked some (many? Who can really say) with its approach to this theme, but the motif itself is as quintessentially "Star Wars" as blaster fights and a precarious lack of handrails around chasms in the Empire's super-weapons.

Nicholas Philibert, whose film On the Adamant won the Golden Bear at the 73rd Berlinale on Saturday, has made a lifetime commitment to observational documentary, moving between interviews and long, patient takes of his subjects pursuing what it is that they do. The best known of these is Etre et Avoir (2002), which followed a year in the life of a tiny rural school where the single teacher – kindly but exacting, in the French manner – taught several grades at once. Thanks to the magnetism of this committed teacher – and of his delightful enfants, of course – Etre et Avoir became an unlikely but enduring arthouse hit.

After the misery of the 2022 Berlin Film Festival, held toward the tail-end of the pandemic and with strict social distancing and Covid testing regulations still in place, it was back to normal at this year’s 73rd edition.
Festivalgoers were so pleased to return to a proper, physical event that they were remarkably tolerant toward a competition programme that was very patchy, at least by comparison with those found in rival events like Cannes and Venice.
The Berlinale launched with Rebecca Miller’s quirky new romantic comedy, She Came to Me, starring Peter Dinklage as an opera composer with writer’s block, Anne Hathaway as his neurotic therapist wife, and the scene-stealing Marisa Tomei as a salty, seafaring but very amorous tugboat captain. This was a film with such oddball charm that it was easy to overlook its self-indulgence. Festivals can take themselves far too seriously. She Came to Me...

Brendan Fraser's lengthy makeup and prosthetics process for The Whale is shown off in detail thanks to a new time-lapse video. Directed by Darren Aronofsky, The Whale features Fraser as Charlie, a morbidly obese man who struggles to reconnect with his estranged daughter, Ellie, played by Sadie Sink. The film proved somewhat divisive among critics upon its release last year, but Fraser's highly affecting performance, in particular, has been showered with praise.
Now, EW has shared a new behind-the-scenes look at The Whale and how Fraser's transformation into a 600-pound man was pulled off.

The A24-produced Sundance hit "Past Lives" is a must-see film of 2023 that took the beloved American festival quietly by storm — and luckily for us, the movie finally has a trailer and release date.
In the sneak peek, we meet Na Young and Hae Sung (Teo Yoo), two childhood friends who reconnect later in life after forming a bond as children. They find each other again and start to explore their connection, but when Nora's career ambitions take precedence, they lose that connection again for several more years. But the film seems to assert that these two people will always be in each other's lives, and are destined to meet again.
Yesterday, A24 shared the first poster for the film via their social media channels. The poster simply shows an image of Lee smiling at someone she's looking at on her left-hand side. We only see someone's shoulder with a...

Things are getting more complicated (and hotter) in the Grishaverse with the Sun Summoner getting involved in a love quadrangle in season 2 of Netflix's "Shadow and Bone." The last time we saw Alina Starkov (Jessie Mei Li) in the season finale, she managed to free herself from the influence of the brooding, manipulative General Kirigan (Ben Barnes), who tried harnessing her powers using Morozova's collar. This is the moment Alina chooses to truly step into her power and do what's necessary to snatch back her autonomy. Deciding that it is best to go into hiding, she and Mal (Archie Renaux) are seen walking into the unknown, with the knowledge that the Darkling's reign has finally come to an end. Little do they know that Kirigan is very much alive, and more intent than ever to track Alina down, no matter what the cost.

This year, the Sundance Film Festival returned in-person events with a vengeance. After two straight mostly virtual editions, the festival got back to almost-normal with packed crowds squeezing into the shuttles and trudging up and down Main Street. The festival also allowed its films, at distributors’ discretion, to screen virtually on its platform for accredited press who were still covering Sundance remotely.
That meant, in conducting our annual critics survey this year, some films may simply have been seen by more journalists than others. But it is striking that in the final tally, some buzzy films that were available virtually the entire time did not make the cut, while some titles that played exclusively in-person in Park City ranked high.
This time, a record 367 critics voted in the IndieWire Critics Survey for Sundance 2023. The films with the most support were Chloe Domont’s “Fair Play,” which was on the online...

It won't surprise you to learn that the director behind darkly comedic action films like "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" and "The Nice Guys" is a big fan of John Maxim's bestselling thriller series about "retired" assassin Paul Bannerman. In fact, the filmmaker in question, Shane Black, even tweeted about his love for the series back in 2021, snapping a photo of all five novels spread out on a table and writing, "The year is 1990 and thriller writer John R. Maxim is at the top of his game. Before Lee Child ... before Vince Flynn ... there was Maxim. The guy simply brings it. Everything I crave. A masterful writer." Perhaps this was our first hint at a series to come ... or just Shane Black manifesting a potential project in the hopes of sparking some interest. Either way, it all worked out in the end: AMC has acquired the rights to the spy...

Despite the heroism and quick thinking shown by disgraced MI5 agent River Cartwright (Jack Lowden) in Season 1 of “Slow Horses,” he’s back at Slough House under the disapproving eye of boss Jackson Lamb (Gary Oldman). And, Lowden told TheWrap, Lamb still doesn’t have that much faith in River as “Slow Horses” returns for Season 2 to Apple TV+.
“It doesn’t matter what they do. They’ve got to do something really special to get back to where they want to be, I think,” said Lowden of his fellow “horses,” who include Catherine Standish (Saskia Reeves), Louisa Guy (Rosalind Eleazar), Min Harper (Dustin Demri-Burns), and tech whiz Roddy Ho (Christopher Chung).
As it turns out, saving a high-profile kidnap victim from decapitation wasn’t quite enough to get them reinstated with MI5.

Back in the 60s, Sean Connery got a bit tired of being James Bond. The famously dedicated Scot had ambitions to become an actor celebrated for his versatility but struggled to escape the significant shadow of 007. Thankfully, over the course of the next few decades, Connery would go on to do just that. The former Bond star worked diligently to establish himself as an undeniable talent, capable of playing everything from a Soviet submarine captain in "The Hunt For Red October" to an Irish-American cop in "The Untouchables."
With his acting chops firmly established, Connery could end the 20th Century safe in the knowledge he'd escaped the trappings of Bond. And what better way to celebrate that than with a heist thriller containing many of the hallmarks of a Bond movie. Christmas films can be divisive things. For every person who needs to choke back a sob over Zuzu’s petals in order to feel truly festive, there is another for whom only an 8 week binge of Channel 5’s kindly cupcake cafe owners and selfish businesswomen meeting the interchangeable men of their dreams will suffice.
Yet once in a while a filmmaker crafts a beautiful sparkly bridge that unites the factions and has the chutzpah and baubles to fill even the hardest heart with holiday cheer. One to break out after boardgame controversies and tearful post-sherry fallouts. This Christmas season that audacious movie is Spirited.
Ebenezer (Will Ferrell) has it good. Once the scourge of the poor and vulnerable, Scrooge lived his final days with kindness and generosity and he knew how to keep Christmas well… Which is handy because in his afterlife Scrooge has reunited with Marley and become the Ghost of Christmas Present!

Typically, Dungeons in Final Fantasy Xiv are linear, one-way instances filled with corridors and arenas of enemies. However, The Sil'dihn Subterrane Variant Dungeon in Ffxiv offers new experiences and story content every time players replay the instance. It might sound similar to a roguelike mechanic, but all the branching paths are fixed and not randomly generated.
However, Patch 6.25's The Sil'dihn Subterrane in Final Fantasy Xiv is not accessible from the get-go for Warriors of Light. Like much of the new content released as of late, players must own and complete the entire Endwalker expansion to accept the prerequisite quest for unlocking the Variant Dungeon.

When you consider the entire history of Westeros, the wedding that takes place in this week’s House of the Dragon doesn’t go all that badly.
Sure, someone dies on the dance floor during the rehearsal dinner. Yes, the stepmother of the bride may be very close to inciting a coup. And agreed, the father of the bride may have keeled over to his death just after the vows were said. But hey, a pregnant woman wasn’t stabbed multiple times in the belly, so… success?

Major spoilers for the first two episodes of "The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power" follow!
Twenty years after the Peter Jackson trilogy changed the entire face of pop culture and blockbuster filmmaking as we know it, "The Lord of the Rings" is back to prove that author J.R.R. Tolkien's epic material still has a place in our ongoing fantasy lexicon. After months and months of cautious optimism turning into outright hype, "The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power" has finally arrived to tell its giant-sized story on the small screen. Though set thousands of years before Frodo or Aragorn or the rest of the Fellowship ever set foot on Middle-earth and in an entirely separate continuity altogether, the Prime Video series still features a few recognizable names, some intriguingly familiar locations, and one particular big bad whose reputation will certainly stand out to anyone...

Stanley Kubrick was, to put it mildly, an exacting filmmaker. He made it his business to know everything about every aspect of production, and leaned on his collaborators something fierce to deliver to his meticulous standards. Jack Nicholson put it best when he said, "Stanley's good on sound. Stanley's good on the color of the mike. Stanley's good about the merchant he bought the mike from. Stanley's good about the merchant's daughter who needs some dental work. Stanley's good."
While prepping his adaptation of William Makepeace Thackeray's picaresque "The Luck of Barry Lyndon," Kubrick immersed himself in the tale's 18th century period. It wasn't enough to evoke the look of the era; the filmmaker was determined to capture the precise look and feel and smell of that bygone age. To do so, he famously went so far as to acquire super-fast Zeiss camera lenses that were used during the...

“Escape From Kabul Airport,” a documentary airing on BBC Two in September, will tell the inside story of the 18 days in August 2021, when the U.S. withdrew its troops from Afghanistan, and the subsequent evacuation of thousands of Afghan citizens from Kabul airport after the Taliban seized the city.
The documentary is an Amos production for the BBC, in association with HBO and in collaboration with Arte France. It is produced by Emmy and BAFTA-winning Dan Reed (“Leaving Neverland”) and directed by Jamie Roberts (“Four Hours At The Capitol”).
The film combines never before seen on-the-ground archival footage from the evacuation, alongside interviews with evacuees, eye-witnesses, U.S. Marines and Taliban fighters.
Roberts said: “When the images of the chaotic Kabul airlift flashed across the news I immediately wanted to know more about what this historic moment looked and felt like on the ground, through the eyes of the people who were there.

It’s a classic Onion headline: “U.S. Dept. Of Retro Warns: ‘We May Be Running Out Of Past.’” Literally classic: it’s from 25 years ago. Its prescience goes beyond the satirical: we do indeed seem to have run out of retro, because we’ve been so mired in nostalgia for the past decade that 20 years ago barely feels past. It feels impossible to be nostalgic for, say, the 14-year-old Iron Man when we’re still in the midst of an ongoing cycle of Marvel movies.
(Fyi, I first referenced this bit of brilliance from the Onion a decade ago when, in January 2012, I asked: “Have we reached a point of cultural stagnation?”)
Almost all of the movies that have topped the annual US box office since 1999 has been a sequel or based on pre-existing popular IP. There’s a shocking sameness to the past 20 years of popular movies that...

An unusual partnership between Kazakhstan and Japan is behind the film “The Horse Thieves. Roads of Time” and it is not just a co-production. The film is in fact co-directed by Kazakh filmmaker Yerlan Nurmukhambetov and Japanese Lisa Takeba – who allegedly met at a party in Cannes – and stars among others, Kazakh film actress Samal Yeslyamova, winner of best actress at Cannes for “Ayka” in 2018, and Japanese actor Mirai Moriyama. The film had its premiere at Busan International Film Festival on the 3rd of October and it is being screened in cinemas around Japan as I write. The odd English title may sound a bit arcane, while the Japanese one – which translates “Olzhas’ White Horse” – goes straight to the point; however, the simple explanation is that “Roads of Time” is the series of paintings by Kazakh artist Gali Myrzashev which are shown during the end credits.

Even if you’ve never played a Dragon Quest game, you’ve undoubtedly played other titles influenced by the series. Basic Jrpg tropes like the overhead view, turn-based combat, and the medieval fantasy setting all got their start with the original Dragon Quest (then called Dragon Warrior in the West).
While many of these game design innovations are attributed to Final Fantasy, which was released in North America first, the Japanese release of Dragon Quest actually beat Final Fantasy by a full year at a time when Square and Enix were still separate companies. In fact, Final Fantasy probably wouldn’t exist if not for the massive success of Dragon Quest.
Since then, the series has seen plenty of ups and downs. While Dragon Quest has always been a huge hit in Japan, the original game sold so poorly in the U.S. that it was given away with subscriptions to Nintendo Power.
