After Over Two Months of deliberating to get to this point, we have our final thirteen contestants and it's finally time for the first live show! It might be Halloween today but there's no Halloween theme this year - instead the contestants will be tackling "This is Me" (although for some of the contestants, maybe that theme will turn out Halloween-appropriate after all).

We've got plenty of X Factor news to get excited about, including the returns of Monica 'Earrings' Michael as a wildcard and one of the best people to ever have been involved in the X Factor franchise, Peter Dickson!

Sky 1's new music panel show Bring the Noise hasn't even begun yet, but already it's given us this rather good/disturbing clip of David Tennant really committing to character.

The Broadchurch star and Kaiser Chiefs' Ricky Wilson act out Elton John and Kiki Dee's 1976 video for 'Don't Go Breaking My Heart' - dungarees and formerly receding hairline included.

In the segment, Wilson takes on the role of John and Tennant does Dee, with panellist Nicole Scherzinger remarking: "David, you look pretty as a girl..."

Alongside music video spoofs, Bring the Noise comprises music trivia and performance battles.

Wilson hosts, with team captains Scherzinger and Tinie Tempah sitting alongside regulars Katherine Ryan and Joel Dommett.

Tennant is one of a number of guests to appear on the show, with Martin Kemp also appearing tonight, and Laurence Fox (Lewis), Mel C and Foxes popping up throughout the series.

It's week two of Strictly Come Dancing, and all 15 contestants have taken to the dance floor before the first elimination tomorrow evening (October 4).

Digital Spy was of course watching, and has rounded up all the judges' scores and comments, along with videos of the dances.

After claiming she's had a hard time finding people to collaborate with musically (then saying she was only joking), Kelly Clarkson found the perfect duets partner when she showed up on Monday's Tonight Show.

Adam Cook: Here we are again, talking To. It's frustrating how many times I've encountered a dismissive attitude towards Johnnie To's romantic comedies. I realize even the director himself disassociates from them, but, and especially with his most recent works, the rom-coms have been as formally intricate and as impressively crafted as his more revered crime films. As everyone was praising Drug War, it was Romancing in Thin Air that stood out for me. Before that there was Don't Go Breaking My Heart (written on here by Ignatiy Vishnevetsky), an impossibly entertaining love triangle in the big city movie, that while over the top and silly, had some of To's most impressive images...

★★★☆☆Whilst he may primarily be associated with the stylish Hong Kong gangster picks that have made him his name, director Johnnie To is not averse to turning his hand to lighter matters. Don't Go Breaking My Heart (2011) was one such offering - a likable romantic farce in a manic financial sector with stocks and affections traded with equal zeal. After the enormous success of that film, To has returned to the same stomping ground for the further adventures of the central trio in Don't Go Breaking My Heart 2 (2014). Taking the screwball shenanigans even further, it's unbridled fun that works despite the relationships themselves lacking any real depth below the moxie.

In a summer suffuse with the overblown abstractions of CGI blockbusters, one welcomes a return to concrete filmmaking, and Johnnie To's great Drug War served this purpose perfectly: firm lines, structural plotting, and geometric decoupage makes for a highly material formalism, all deeply tied to the director's first completely Mainland Chinese production.

Like 2011's romcom Don't Go Breaking My Heart, this film is powered by formal play, but the material here is a corrosive but ambiguous thriller about a Mainland Anti-Drug cop (Sun Honglei) chasing down suppliers, transporters, and the moneymen forming a curvilinear connection spanning Hong Kong, going through China to South Korea and ending in Japan. Louis Koo is a loyalty-hopping Hong Konger cooking meth on the Mainland; caught by the police, he is blackmailed under the threat of execution by the State into exposing factories and ratting out his workers, then forced to go undercover with...

The second in our series of Cannes dialogues between Adam Cook and Daniel Kasman is on Johnnie To's Blind Detective, which screened out of competition as a Midnight Projection.

Adam Cook: Blind Detective stands out among Johnnie To’s recent work as one of his most outlandish and over-the-top films. In some ways, it feels like it meets halfway between his earlier comedies, made before he became such a rigorous craftsmen, and his present formalism. That being said, it retains a certain looseness and spontaneity that distinguishes it from just about anything he's made. How do you define this film within his oeuvre? 

Daniel Kasman: I've seen a lot of To but not in any way a majority, and have especially large gaps in his earlier work (80s thru early 90s) and in a certain amount of comedies which certainly...

As is no doubt befits the ease of manipulation of film's past through contemporary consumer digital means, Rotterdam this year seems full of “video essays” and art pieces deconstructing or exploring cinema material and history. The proliferation alone prompts my skepticism; browse the festival catalog and see videos that engage with Psycho, Zabriskie Point, Eyes Wide Shut, Easy Rider, Freud's celluloid doppelgangers, Faces, and more.

From the spectral underground comes a real work of cinephilia, and by that I mean something that is neither fetishization of a film object nor an exploitation of the same for other means. Rather, Mary Helena Clark's 16mm Orpheus (Outtakes), which I had the pleasure of seeing at Tiff's Wavelengths program last September and revisiting again in Rotterdam, finds on the cutting room floor the facts, dreams, and possibilities of cinema history and future. Cinephilia as lucid consciousness of what lies beneath, behind, and beyond films.

A video featuring One Direction's Harry Styles and Ed Sheeran singing karaoke at an aftershow party has made its way online. Styles and Sheeran were filmed performing 'Don't Go Breaking My Heart' by Elton John and Kiki Dee. According to HeatWorld, the karaoke video was taken at a party that followed One Direction's recent Madison Square Garden show. ★★★★☆ It may come as no surprise to devoted East Asian film fans when acclaimed director Johnnie To admits his last two romantic endeavours, Don't Go Breaking My Heart (2011) and new film Romancing in Thin Air (2012), were made to easily pass the censorship rules in mainland China. However, it would be disingenuous to claim that a film produced for a mass audience would have no artistic value. To's latest commercial venture certainly confirms his status as the best and most consistent director working in Hong Kong.

In a rare, but much welcome change of pace, Johnnie To came off the back of 2009's disappointing multinational crime thriller, Vengeance, with two relatively light and fluffy romances. Don't Go Breaking My Heart successfully navigated a complex and hard-to-predict love triangle through the tumultuous financial tsunami that hit Hong Kong harder than most. While the next film to be released in cinemas bearing To's directorial moniker was Life Without Principle, a similarly finance-obsessed work, it was a project To had in fact been tinkering with for a number of years already. Instead, once Don't Go Breaking... had been completed, the Milkyway Image crew headed north into the mountains of Yunnan, where Louis Koo and Sammi Cheng would star in snowbound love story, Romancing In...

On last night's Modern Family, Phil asks for help from Gloria and Haley, Claire and Jay offer unsolicited help to Manny and Luke, and Cam and Mitch meet with a prospective birth mother who makes them sing for their supper.

After a lackluster episode last week, this one was up to par, especially the Cam and Mitch story. I always enjoy them more when they're working together instead of against each other.

Favorite Moments: Cam and Mitch doing "Don't Go Breaking My Heart," and then Cam totally ruining things with his solo "If You Leave Me Now." Phil going it alone at the seminar. "It's not rocket science, people!"

Looking back at 2011 on what films moved and impressed us it becomes more and more clear—to me at least—that watching old films is a crucial part of making new films meaningful. Thus, our end of year poll, now an annual tradition, which calls upon our writers to pick both a new and an old film: they were challenged to choose a new film they saw in 2011—in theaters or at a festival—and creatively pair it with an old film they also saw in 2011 to create a unique double feature. Many contributors chose their favorites of 2011, some picked out-of-the-way gems, others made some pretty strange connections—and some frankly just want to create a kerfuffle. All the contributors were asked to write a paragraph explaining their 2011 fantasy double feature. Besides the shorts we and the Chicago International Film Festival are showing for free, there are more than 180 other films in the lineup from 50 countries, with more than 45 films by first-time directors. I'll be gathering notes and links here from coverage of Ciff 47, opening today and running through October 20.

"The festival shows off its Chicago cred with this year's opening-night movie, produced by Steppenwolf Films and shot entirely in our city," writes Ben Kenigsberg, kicking off Time Out Chicago's day-by-day guide to the first week (featuring capsule previews of 70 films). With The Last Rites of Joe May, Joe Maggio "does a credible job with this story of a small-time operator (Dennis Farina) so ineffectual that when he's hospitalized for pneumonia, everyone assumes he's dead. Predictably, he finds redemption caring for a battered single mother and her kid. The movie is watchable, but there's barely a scene in it that's not a cliché.

A romantic comedy produced for the lucrative Mandarin market, Johnnie To and Wai Ka-fai's Don't Go Breaking My Heart is pure formula—quirky white-collar girl wooed by contrasting lovers—given the étude treatment: rudimentary romantic themes, taken at face value, form the basis for a complicated technical exercise. Tricks with mirrored surfaces, depth-of-field, cutaway sets and wide-angle lenses abound, all synced up to Xavier Jamaux's Legrand-esque makeout music. But to what ends? To and Wai aren't giving story or structure the runaround in favor of "style;" rather, they take this hoary premise and build on and out of it. Simple ideas, sufficiently overthought, become postmodernist architecture: crisp lines of character, plot and internal logic accented with blunt neoclassical flourishes. Where those lines lead, though, is a different matter.

Montreal's Fantasia International Film Festival, which will be held from July 14 to August 7, will kick off with Kevin Smith's Red State.

Fantasia also made the first announcement about the films that will be part of this 15th edition's line-up.

People can see the anthology film Theatre Bizarre. This coproduction between Canada, France, Germany, the UK, the USA reunites Richard Stanley (Hardware), Karim Hussain (La belle bête), Douglas Buck (Cutting Moments), Buddy Giovinazzo (Life Is Hot in Cracktown), David Gregory (Plague Town) and Tom Savini, as directors.

The festival will also hold the world premier of The Wicker Tree, from Robin Hardy. Moreover, a book launch is also expected because The Wicker Tree is based on the novel Cowboys for Christ, by Hardy.

As for a Canadian premiere, Ryoo Seung-wan's The Unjust will be screened. Besides, Ryoo will be invited by the festival's organizers to teach choreography for action films.

Last week on "American Idol," Jacob Lusk soared, while Casey Abrams collapsed, literally, falling into Ryan Seacrest's arms as the judges exercised their only save of the season to prevent the bearded fellow from going home.

Where does the show go from here? "Some of Asia's top filmmakers screened their new movies to kick off the 35th Hong Kong International Film Festival on Sunday, although the mood was subdued because of Japan's earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disasters," reports Min Lee for the AP. "Japan's crisis cast doubt on whether its actors and directors will attend the Hong Kong festival. Popular Japanese director Shunji Iwai, a native of hard-hit Sendai city, has canceled his appearance at the Asian premiere of his first English-language movie, Vampire. One of the real trials for parents forced to drag their tiny progeny to the multiplex to see a film is sitting through a kid's pic with irritating songs sung by irritating characters. And while we have yet to weigh in on Disney's animated garden gnome film "Gnomeo & Juliet," at least parents won't have to endure a bunch of aggravating cutesy songs. Cheesy songs, lemon juice hair-bleaching and not a lot of plot this week should have made the episode feel all kinds of wrong. Instead, I remembered how much I used to enjoy this show and, God help me, sing along like some idiotic Disney Channel extra. Part of what helped this episode improve the show's standing was the fact that it felt like they were trying to have fun with the show again. Serious stuff is great, it's important and necessary for character development, but sometimes you have to throw on a habit and take a jab at yourself.

After last week's nuanced, heartbreaking episode of Glee, there was probably no place to go but down. Except, in this second, surprisingly good season of the show, a funny thing happened: they didn't go down. Or rather, they went sideways. Let me explain!

This week, we get all the familiar problems with Glee: inconsistent characterization (Finn suddenly knows how to string sentences together); presentational format (Mr. Schue just up and tells us what this week's assignment is, and all the songs are just part of the assignment); and basically zero stakes. And, this is easily the dorkiest episode of television this year. If I heard one more character talk about how amazing Breadsticks was, I would have reached through the TV and punched them.

Except, and here's where the sideways thing comes in - it kind of worked.

As part of the "Duets" competition on "Glee," Rachel and Finn rehearsed the fun 1970s classic "Don't Go Breaking My Heart" by Elton John and Kiki Dee. They ultimately decided to throw the competition and so they went with a fairly inappropriate version of "With You I'm Born Again."

"Don't Go Breaking My Heart" was definitely an adorable Finn-Rachel moment. But who sang it better?  Finn and Rachel or Marshall and Lily? Four years ago on the "Life Among the Gorillas" episode of "How I Met Your Mother," Marshall and Lily did a very sweet karaoke version of the song.

So which one do we like better? Well, technically the "Glee" one is far superior -- especially since Alyson Hannigan can't sing (even she admitted it when "Buffy" was doing the musical episode). But the "Himym" version is just so darn cute! What do you think?

"Glee" brought us another competition -- this time it was "Duets" amongst the team members, competing for dinner for two at Breadsticks. Hilariously, Puck was not eligible because he's in juvie for trying to steal an Atm machine - of course he is.

Rachel and Finn rehearsed "Don't Go Breaking My Heart" by Elton John and Kiki Dee. It was cute, if a bit saccharine. And we don't think they have anything on Lily and Marshall. When Rachel decided they needed to throw the competition, they instead went with "With You I'm Born Again" by Billy Preston and Syreeta Wright -- while dressed as a priest and a Catholic school girl. Awk. Ward.

Mercedes and Santana wailed on Tina Turner's "River Deep, Mountain High." We mean -- wow. H-o-t. And the Tina Turner signature dance moves were outstanding.

On the next episode of "Glee", Matthew Morrison will present New Directions with a duet competition that causes friction among club members. A freshly-released preview offers a sneak peek at how Kurt and some of the Glee club kids execute the challenge. Sam getting slushie treatment and more drama are also teased.

"Duets" will be aired on Fox on October 12, a week before the highly-anticipated "The Rocky Horror Glee Show". In the episode, Finn and Rachel plan to throw the competition in favor of new recruit Sam. A love triangle will develop between Mike, Tina and Artie.
