CSI: Crime Scene Investigation is one of those network shows that feels like it's been around forever. It follows a team of crime scene investigators working for the Las Vegas Police Department, and it focuses more on science and physical evidence to solve murders than thrilling police work. In the world of police procedurals, CSI felt like a breath of fresh air. And it showed in the ratings. During its original broadcast, CSI became CBS' most successful series with the highest ratings. Its tremendous popularity launched an entire franchise that has since produced various spin-offs.

Liev Schreiber is getting candid about what he’s learned about fame over the years, saying that it alone won’t make people truly happy.
The Emmy-nominated actor shared in an interview with Haute Living magazine, published online Thursday, that after decades in the entertainment industry, he realized the importance of working on projects that he’s actually passionate about.
“I work for hire, as they say, and like to make money,” he explained. “I have a growing family. The older I get, the more I think I want it to matter when I work. Of course, it doesn’t always — in fact, it rarely does — but it’s nice when it does, when one of your jobs means something to people. That feels good, like the job does what it was supposed to do in the beginning, which is to connect you to people.”

“Being from a small country is not an obstacle but a plus because you have a story no one has heard of,” Lithuanian actor and showrunner Gabija Siurbyte (“Troll Farm”) told the TV Beats panel during this week’s Industry@Tallinn & Baltic Event, hosted by the Black Nights Film Festival. It was the kind of optimism and can-do spirit that characterized the industry forum, which comprised an impressive range of industry panels, workshops and pitching sessions, as well as including a few innovations of its own.

Upon its August 2023 premiere, the Amazon Prime Video original film “Red, White & Royal Blue” quickly gained a massive audience, a large portion of which reportedly created new subscriptions just so they could view it. Now, the two-hour adaptation of Casey McQuiston’s 2019 novel of the same name is set to embark on a 2024 TV awards run that, of course, won’t include the delayed 75th Emmys but could more than reasonably begin with the 81st Golden Globes. If it does make its way into the upcoming Best Limited Series/TV Movie lineup, it will be the first one-off film in seven years to earn Golden Globes recognition as a general program.
Directed and co-written by Tony winner Matthew López (“The Inheritance”), “Red, White & Royal Blue” stars Taylor Zakhar Perez (“The Kissing Booth” franchise) and Nicholas Galitzine (2021’s “Cinderella”) as two fictional world leaders’ offspring whose bitter rivalry unexpectedly evolves into a romance.

A quarter century after making his screen acting debut as a guest star on “The Rockford Files,” 60-year-old James Cromwell received his first Emmy nomination for his supporting turn in the 1999 TV movie “Rko 281.” In the time since, he has racked up a win for “American Horror Story: Asylum” and four guest acting bids, including two for special appearances on “Succession.” To date, the dependable actor has embodied central character Logan Roy’s older brother, Ewan, in five episodes across the HBO drama’s three seasons.
Cromwell received his first “Succession” bid at 80 and thus became the 12th oldest Best Drama Guest Actor nominee ever. Two years later, his second nomination for the show allowed him to move to 10th place on the list. All but one of the nine older actors in the ranking joined after the turn of the century, with two being among the very few nonagenarian contenders in Emmys history.

At first glance, the Emmys are giving a lot of love to young performers including Zendaya (“Euphoria”), Julia Garner (“Ozark”), Sarah Snook (“Succession”), Jeremy Pope (“Hollywood) and Ramy Youssef (“Ramy”). But looks can be deceiving because there are several Emmy veterans in their 70s, 80s and even 90s nipping at these whippersnappers’ heels in the quest for the gold statute.
Cicely Tyson is the oldest acting Emmy nominee at 95. She’s nominated for the fifth time for guest role in a drama series as Ophelia Harkness on ABC’s “How to Get Away with Murder” and is also being inducted into the academy Hall of Fame. Tyson, a Tony (“A Trip to Bountiful”) and honorary Oscar-winner, has been nominated for the Emmy 16 times, winning three: for lead in a drama and actress of the year for CBS’ 1974 “The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman” and supporting actress in a miniseries or...

“It’s better than a kick in the eye!,” laughs veteran actor James Cromwell, who just received his fifth career Emmy nomination, this time for his guest role on HBO’s flagship drama “Succession.”

Most Emmy pundits agree that Peter Dinklage is a shoo-in for another Emmy nomination for “Game of Thrones.” He’s the only actor who has ever won for the HBO fantasy series, and he has done it three times. But if he’s that beloved by the television academy, why aren’t more of us predicting him for his other role this season in the TV movie “My Dinner with Herve”?
Dinklage is the overwhelming favorite to win Best Drama Supporting Actor for playing conflicted royal advisor Tyrion Lannister. He’s backed by 15 out of the 16 Expert journalists we’ve polled thus far, 8 out of 9 Gold Derby Editors, and 21 of our Top 24 Users who got the highest scores predicting last year’s Emmy nominations. He previously won the prize in 2011, 2015 and 2018. If he’s nominated for the eighth time this year it will extend his record for the most bids in the category.

The second and final season of “Timeless,” NBC’s time travel drama, embraces more inclusion and diversity, including encounters with abolitionist Harriet Tubman, suffragist Alice Paul, and blues musician Robert Johnson. This greatly expanded the challenges and opportunities for costume designer Mari-An Ceo, who especially enjoyed “Hollywoodland,” in which she got to recreate Katherine Hepburn’s lavish Greek goddess gown from “The Philadelphia Story” for star Abigail Spencer.
“The stories shifted and became more evolved [this season], but this was one of my favorites,” Ceo said. “Going into Hollywood, it felt like we were making a movie and dressed all the people that worked on movies. We made hundreds of background costumes. We were on the Paramount lot and, finally, we were shooting where the place actually was supposed to be.”

BBC News reports that Sean Bean will star in a new six-part event series titled Frankenstein Chronicles, a crime drama that will reimagine the classic tale. The series is created by Benjamin Ross (Rko 281), who will direct the first episode, and will be written by Frank Doelger, who has written episodes of Game of Thrones and Rome.
Variety describes the series as being “set in London in 1827 with Bean playing Inspector John Marlott. It opens with the discovery of the corpse of a child that turns out to be a crude assembly of body parts. Marlott accepts the challenge to track the perpetrator of this crime”.
“Marlott’s investigation takes him into the dark corners of Regency London,” Ross said. “He discovers an underworld of prostitution, drug smuggling, bodysnatching, and murder for profit. The rational evidence points first one-way and then another as he contemplates a frightening alternate scenario.

Sean Bean is set to star in the six-part period crime drama series "The Frankenstein Chronicles" for Rainmark Films and British network ITV. The story reimagines Mary Shelley's classic story as a gruesome mystery procedural.
Set in 1827 London, Bean plays police inspector John Marlott who makes a shocking discovery involving a corpse washed up on the banks of the Thames - a corpse assembled from mutilated body parts.
Marlott is tasked by the British Home Secretary with tracking the perpetrator of this heinous crime. His investigations leads him through the darkest corners of Regency London - prostitution, drug smuggling, bodysnatching, contract killings, and ultimately something far more horrific than he could have imagined.
Director/writer Benjamin Ross ("Rko 281," "The Young Poisoner’s Handbook") and writer Barry Langford ("Torte Bluma") will serve in those capacities on the project which marks the first original drama of ITV's subscription channel ITV Encore.

The darkest chapter in American history has always been ripe for the Hollywood treatment, but after Steve McQueen’s searing 12 Years A Slave took Best Picture at the Oscars earlier this year, it seems clearer than ever that there’s still a large appetite for movies about slavery. Luckily, the next star-studded movie about the subject won’t be quite as painful to watch as 12 Years A Slave. Deadline is reporting that Liev Schreiber and Jaden Smith have signed on to star in an adaptation of James McBride’s satirical slavery novel The Good Lord Bird.
McBride’s novel, which won him the 2013 National Book Award, centers on a cross-dressing slave named Little Onion (Smith), a young boy mistaken for a girl when rescued from his master by famed abolitionist John Brown (Schreiber). Together, they set out on a journey across the country, encountering individuals like Harriet Tubman and Frederick Douglass...

Following up the premiere of the final season of Dexter, Showtime debuted its newest drama, Ray Donovan. It stars Liev Schreiber, who we all remember as Wolverine’s (Hugh Jackman) arch-nemesis, Sabertooth in X-Men Origins: Wolverine and to a lesser extent Orson Welles in Rko 281, the film based on the making of Citizen Kane.
If you’ve seen ABC’s Scandal, the character of Ray Donovan bears a striking resemblance to Olivia Pope (Kerry Washington). Both Ray and Olivia fix the problems of high profile people. Accused of murder, rape, homosexuality or bribery? Turn to Olivia if you’re in Washington DC or Ray if you’re in Hollywood. If coasts don’t matter, go with Olivia if you want someone tied to politics and has had an affair with a married man — that being the president. Ray’s the guy you go to if you’re an athlete...

If Gold Derby's editors, experts and users are correct, veteran actor James Cromwell will finally win an Emmy award thanks to his sadistic role on "American Horror Story: Asylum." Cromwell is already a three-time Emmy also-ran, having failed to secure wins for "Rko 281" (Movie/Mini Supporting Actor in 2000), "ER" (Drama Guest Actor in 2001) and "Six Feet Under" (Drama Guest Actor in 2003). Thanks to the movie "Babe," Cromwell also has a Supporting Actor Oscar nomination under his belt; he lost that 1995 race to Kevin Spacey ("The Usual Suspects"). Hey voters, isn't it time for James Cromwell to actually win something? According to Gold Derby's exclusive polling, that time is now. Cromwell currently comes in first place in the race for Movie/Mini Supporting Actor. That puts him above category competitors Jeffrey Tambor ("Phil Spector"), Peter Mullan ("To...

Though he’s set to shoot his first film in three years this month, the untitled cyber theft thriller starring Chris Hemsworth, Michael Mann is still keeping an eye on what comes next. Originally floated as his next potential film in 2010, Mann started developing “Agincourt” with a script by “Elizabeth” and “The Tudors” writer Michael Hirst before bringing on “Rko 281” director Benjamin Ross for a rewrite. Now Deadline reports that a new writer has been brought on in the form of Stuart Hazeldine (the writer behind Alex Proyas' scuttled take on “Paradise Lost” and co-writer of Moses movie “Gods and Kings”). Adapted from the Bernard Cornwell novel, the film retells the famous battle between Henry V’s English Army and the French Army, and focuses on “a young man with a death sentence who is saved when his skills with the bow catch the attention of the king.

Call it “Being Blackbeard.”
Two-time Academy Award nominee John Malkovich has landed the lead role of Blackbeard in NBC’s summer series Crossbones, TVLine has learned.
The 10-episode action-adventure series, greenlit by NBC last May and written and co-executive produced by Luther‘s Neil Cross, takes place in 1715 and promises to deliver “the true legend” of “the most notorious pirate to ever sail the earth.”
Malkovich will play Edward Teach, Aka the pirate Blackbeard, who rules over the various thieves and ne’er-do-wells that populate the Bahamian island of New Providence — part shantytown, part marauder’s paradise and a mounting threat to international commerce.

Some of the most fascinating movies out there are the ones culled from fact rather than fiction; the ones that focus on the making-of a classic film in the time period before they are heralded as classics. Gods & Monsters. Rko 281. Tim Burton's Ed Wood, being one of my personal favorites. But the one I can't wait for is Hitchcock, based upon Stephen Rebello's book 'Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho' which is set for a limited theatrical release on November 23rd and stars Anthony Hopkins and Helen Mirren. We've already seen one trailer, as well as a slew of images from the production, but now we've got a great little featurette titled "Hitch & Alma" that talks a bit about the great love story at the center of Hitchcock between the legendary director and his wife. Also, the international trailer for Hitchcock has surfaced today and it...

There are two impending films that purport to shed some light on what is myth – and what is fact – when it comes to “The Master of Suspense,” Alfred Hitchcock. One is HBO’s The Girl, a television movie that explores the filmmaker’s notorious relationship with actress Tippi Hedren. The other is Hitchcock, a theatrical release that previously went under the working title Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho (three guesses as to what it’s about).
Hitchcock sounds like perfect Awards Season fodder; it’s a biographical work about a Hollywood historical figure, as well as testament to a landmark achievement in American filmmaking (like My Week with Marilyn meets Rko 281… sort of). Sure enough, Fox Searchlight Pictures has announced that Hitchcock will begin a limited release in the heat of the 2013 Oscar race.

As fans and colleagues still recover from the shock of Tony Scott’s apparent suicide on Aug. 19, many have not hesitated from praising the director’s long and illustrious career.
Beginning in 1969, Scott left his mark on the industry with a number of impressive films, including 1986’s Top Gun, 1993’s True Romance and 2010’s Unstoppable, which would be his last time in the director’s chair.
Not as many people know about Scott’s influence on television through Scott Free Productions, a production company he co-founded with his brother Ridley Scott. Along with films, the company has produced such TV series as CBS’s Numb3rs and The Good Wife as well as such miniseries as Starz’s The Pillars of the Earth and its sequel, ReelzChannel’s upcoming World Without End.

In the late 1970s and 1980s, composer Giorgio Moroder was often accused of trying to replace the orchestral movie soundtrack with high-energy, synthesizer-heavy disco pop laid on with a trowel in movies like Thank God It’s Friday (1978), Flashdance (1983), Scarface (1983), and Top Gun (1986). I remember a magazine story on Moroder which quoted one of his many critics as saying, “The day the music died, Giorgio Moroder was brought in for questioning.”
I think some people had the same opinion about movies and Tony Scott. Full disclosure: I’m one of them. But it would be greatly unfair to Scott, who apparently committed suicide Sunday after being diagnosed with inoperable brain cancer, not to admit that, for good or for ill, his 1980s feature work had an enormous impact on commercial filmmaking.

68-year-old filmmaker Tony Scott has died in an apparent suicide on Sunday reports The Wrap. He was 68.
A suicide note was found inside Scott's black Toyota Prius, which was parked on one of the eastbound lanes of Vincent Thomas Bridge near Long Beach, California.
Scott climbed a fence on the south side of the suspension bridge's apex and "leapt off without hesitation". His body was recovered after the jump according to the L.A. County Coroner.
The younger brother of fellow film director Ridley Scott whom he also produced many shows and films with, Tony forged his own trademark style in the blockbuster action genre thanks to a successful teaming with producers Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer.

To celebrate, the Complex offers the first-ever retrospective of Schreiber’s career.
I first remember being aware of Liev Schreiber when he played the role of Orson Welles in 1999′s consistently all right HBO film, Rko 281. I wasn’t fond of his portrayal of Welles, mainly because I had seen another actor (whose name I cannot recall) who at least looked much more like the Orson of the Citizen Kane era. You know, the Orson that didn’t depress people. In watching Rko 281, I didn’t feel like Schreiber captured the wild-eyed genius of the young auteur, but later the same year, I saw Schreiber playing one of the Canadian do-gooders in The Hurricane and couldn’t stop picturing him as Welles.
The point being, even in the earlier part of his career as a featured player, Liev Schreiber confounded and annoyed me.

Michael Mann has been linked with about a dozen film projects since he released his gangster period piece Public Enemies in 2009, and now we can add two more to the pile.
The first was announced yesterday by Deadline, who said Mann had entered talks to potentially direct the cop thriller “The Big Stone Grid” at Sony Pictures.
Based on a spec script by S. Craig Zahler, the movie has been described as a cross between Se7en and Marathon Man, and it is the tale of two New York City cops who uncover an extortion ring. It is certainly a film in Mann’s usual crime thriller wheelhouse and it was reported that Mann wanted some time with the screenplay to re-write it himself to mould his vision before he decides whether he wants to direct it or not.
The news of a second potential project comes from the mouth of the veteran helmer himself.

Chicago – I have written about thousands of movies and yet I still feel daunted by addressing “Citizen Kane,” recently released in a stunning Ultimate Collector’s Edition Blu-ray for the 70th anniversary of what many still consider to be the best film of all time. What could I possibly add to the conversation? Pulitzer Prize winners have dissected the film down to every decision made by Orson Welles during its production. All I can tell you is that the movie has lost none of its power. It is still one of the most striking cinematic achievements of all time and the impressive Blu-ray box set does the film the justice it has long-deserved.

Citizen Kane | Warner Bros. | 1941 | 119 min
A psychological study of Charles Foster Kane, a powerful newspaper tycoon whose idealism was corrupted as he rose to enourmous wealth and power. With Hollywood producing so many movies ever year, it is no surprise that they are often full of clichés. Jeff Smith created this montage under the Bottoms Up Productions label for acclaimed movie blog FilmDrunk.com, showing clips of some of the biggest movie clichés from a total of 102 films. The list of films are below the video. Enjoy!

Much as previous generations believe you can tell everything about a person whether or not they love The Beatles or Elvis, you can tell a lot about a film fan depending on their opinions of Citizen Kane. The film is like a lightning rod in the movie blogosphere where you've either seen it and love it, respect it, hate it because it's been built up too much or don't even care to watch it. No matter which statement best describes you, there's no denying that Orson Welles' 1941 masterpiece set out what it was meant to do: spawn discussion, debate, and show film lovers everywhere just what this little medium we call movies is capable of. Now, 70 years after Kane was released in theaters, Warner Bros. is doing a frame by frame high definition restoration so they can release the film on Blu-ray September 13. Read more about the package after the jump.

The much anticipated "Citizen Kane" 70th anniversary collector's edition Blu-ray has been confirmed for a September 13th release date.
Heat Vision reports that Warner Home Video did a 4K resolution scan of a 1941 composite fine grain positive master for the frame-by-frame restoration.
The result is Kane will be presented in the highest quality of any edition yet and will include all the extras from the DVD two-disc special edition along with the HBO docudrama "Rko 281".

Disc Dish has all the details on Warner’s Citizen Kane: 70th Anniversary Ultimate Collector’s Edition Blu-ray —the format’s debut of Orson Welles’ classic 1941 mystery-drama—which is arriving on Sept. 13 for the list price of $64.99 (discounted to $44.99 on Amazon).
The new edition will contain all manner of audio and video extras, the documentary Battle over Citizen Kane and the 1999 HBO original film Rko 281, and a whole slew of collectible goodies, including a 48-page collector’s book, a 20-page reproduction of the original 1941 souvenir program, lobby cards, reproductions of rare production memos and correspondence.
What’s most important, of course, is the quality of the feature film itself, and Warner is aiming to issue the highest quality version of the film ever seen.

Orson Welles' Citizen Kane will be making its debut on Blu-ray on September 13th to mark the film's 70th anniversary. While folks can debate whether or not it's the best American movie ever made, its contribution to cinema is undeniable. Welles devised both technological and narrative innovations for Citizen Kane and if you have a favorite director who was born after the film's release, he or she probably cites the film as one of their inspirations. Warner Bros will be going back to the original nitrate for an HD restoration in 4K resolution. I couldn't be happier that Warner Bros is handling the transfer. Their Blu-ray for Casablanca is mind-blowing. You watch it and you realize that no one who made the film ever saw the movie in the condition you're seeing it in, but it still has the quality of film. Hit the jump to learn about the...
