An insult to the Wing commander Series

I first got started on wing commander when I played part 4 The Price of Freedom and what an excellent games it was. Then hoping wing commander 5 would continue this legacy I was bitterly disappointed.

Part 5 has a very thin plot to say the least. They turned the hero of the previous wing commanders into an old coot and the acting is just damn atrocious which was a suprise because Mark Hamil's performance in part 4 was pretty solid. I guess he didnt try in this one because the plot was so stupid.

Shame on the origin team for release this poor excuse for a game and a movie, I feel it was money down the drain.

          brilliant flight simulator

Comparing to the earlier titles, this game is less about the story, more about the combat. Even so,the movie sequences are nicely done. It is wrong to call this game an interactive movie, because you don't have much of a choice, the outcome if you win is always the same. Cool ending though! Christopher Blair (Mark Hamill)passes up the torch to Casey (Iceman's kid)! The acting is very underrated and much better than the acting done in Wing Commander:The Movie! If you loved Top Gun,then you will enjoy this one as well. This game kicks ass when it comes to flying your ships and taking out the enemy. The special effects for a game this old are out of this world. If you get a chance to play this game, you won't be sorry.

          More than a game

For the video sequences in WC Prophecy being one of the main reasons for creating these intense atmosphere of the entire game, I just have to say : well done. I always hurry up to finish the missions just because I´m so excited to see the next video sequence. To the makers of the WC movie : install joysticks in the cinemas :-), add gameplay to the movie and start up a new era of entertainment.

          Wing Commander: Disappointment

Unfortunately, the most recent of the wing commander games was one of the weakest. The two previous games (III and IV) were a great combination of predefined plot (video sequences) and user choices (how you fared in battle, and plot choices).

Prophecy was a step backward from this. Plot choices were eliminated. In fact, almost all semblance of a plot was eliminated. The plot is weak and fails to draw in the gamer. About halfway through the game, all the clips of talking with characters abruptly stop.

The battle sequences were typical. The new types of ships were great, but nothing new or revolutionary was done with the battle engine, despite the increase in memory and processor requirements. I expected more from this game and was sadly disappointed. I couldn't wait until I was finished with the game, unlike the others in the series.

Above average for an interactive movie.

Origin, the creators of the Wing Commander series have been knowin for putting a large effort into their movie sequences and in this case, the work definitley pays off. The game is quite awesome, and the acting quality is basically what I'd like to call "Video game oscar winning".

          • Trivia
The Terran Confederation military is divided into three branches: Navy (starship crew), Space Force (most of the pilots) and Marines. Officers are allowed to transfer between branches, thus explaining Christopher Blair's new rank of Commodore (before, he was a Space Force Colonel).
          • Goofs
At one point in the game the CAG puts Maniac in charge of the Black Widows squadron and he says "After all these years, to finally have my own squadron." However this is not the first time Maniac has had his own squadron, in Wing Commander II: Special Operations 2 he is in command of the Wild Eagles squadron, test pilots of the Morningstar prototype fighters.

Maniac: Something smell in here? No, something stinks in here, doesn't it? My eyes are watering... Oh, you know what, there's only one thing in the universe that could smell that bad.

[He turns and looks at Casey]

            Maniac: A plebe.

[Casey looks up at him like a deer caught in the headlights]

Maniac: Fresh off the recovery deck and still reeking of the academy. Shoo, plebe. Get lost, OK? This isn't a sandbox. This is the table for the big, big - hey...

[the girls he was trying to impress walk off]

Maniac: This is the table for the big boys. Black Widows squadron.
