It’s been six years since Matthew McConaughey starred in a movie, and when you watch “The Rivals of Amziah King,” it’s easy to see why this was the one that lured him back. It gives him a role that fits his scraggly aging-bad-boy redneck charm like a glove — and, at the same time, it’s different from anything he’s ever done.
The film itself is different from anything you’ve ever seen, in ways both good (the first half) and not as good (the second half doesn’t always parse). Yet there’s an audacity to this movie, which is a neorealist beekeeper Western musical revenge fable, that gets inside your system. The director, Andrew Patterson, has a vision — of life, and of how to tell a story — that he enacts with so much confidence and verve that even when what he’s doing doesn’t totally work,...

Ryan Reynolds thinks one of Eddie Murphy's comedic performances was overlooked by the Academy. During a recent appearance on Variety's Awards Circuit podcast, the Deadpool & Wolverine actor shared that Murphy not receiving an Oscar nod for his multi-character work on The Nutty Professor is one of the "greatest, most, greatest injustices." When asked what he considered the greatest Oscars snub of all time, Reynolds shared:
"One of the greatest, most, greatest injustices is that Eddie Murphy doesn't have an Oscar for 'The Nutty Professor.'"
The Murphy-led comedy is a remake of the 1963 movie of the same name that starred Jerry Lewis. Directed by Tom Shadyac, the 1996 version sees Murphy tackle seven different roles, including Professor Sherman Klump and his charming but devious alter ego Buddy Love. The film earned mostly positive reviews from critics (and currently holds a 66% rating on Rotten Tomatoes), who praised Murphy for his hilarious portrayals.

The 1997 movie awards season was shaping up to be surprisingly competitive in the early fall of that year. "L.A. Confidential," "Boogie Nights," and "The Sweet After" were making serious noise, while summer sleepers "The Full Monty" and "Ulee's Gold" appeared likely to stay in the picture as everyone awaited the arrival of presumed heavy hitters like Steven Spielberg's "Amistad," James L. Brooks' "As Good as It Gets," and Quentin Tarantino's "Jackie Brown." But when James Cameron's "Titanic," a wildly expensive coin flip from a director best known for popcorn flicks, began screening for critics and guilds in early November, everything clicked into place. The boat movie was an Oscar lock for Best Picture and Director, "As Good as It Gets" had Best Actor and Actress sewn up, and everyone else was playing for the honor to be nominated.

“I remember seeing a film that became really formative for me called ‘Ruby in Paradise.’ It was a film about a young woman finding herself. It’s a simple film. A beautiful film. And I thought, ‘Wow. I didn’t know a film could be like this.’ I’d never seen anything like this before.”
That was director Ava DuVernay in the documentary “Only in Theaters” talking about “Ruby in Paradise,” winner of the Grand Jury Prize at the 1993 Sundance Film Festival and one of several exquisitely crafted dramas from Florida writer-director Victor Nunez. Since his feature debut “Gal Young Un” in 1979, Nunez has slowly, quietly, and consistently built one of the American independent cinema’s most vital bodies of work, one centered around complex regional character studies like “Ruby” and its follow-up “Ulee’s Gold,” for which Peter Fonda was nominated for an Oscar.

When he made his first feature, Gal Young ‘Un, in 1979, director Victor Nuñez was a pioneer in an American independent film movement still in its early stages. Over the next several decades, Nuñez continued to work on personal projects on his home turf of northern Florida. He worked rewardingly with gifted actors like Ed Harris in A Flash of Green and launched Ashley Judd’s acting career with Ruby in Paradise in 1993. Peter Fonda earned his only Oscar nomination as an actor when he starred in Nuñez’s Ulee’s Gold in 1997.
But Nuñez has not directed a film in over a decade. He returns to the screen with Rachel Hendrix and helps to revitalize the acting career of Lori Singer, still best known for her starring role opposite Kevin Bacon in 1984’s Footloose. Singer, also an accomplished classical musician, had a few other notable acting credits, in Alan Rudolph’s...

A blockbuster film tied big records, a legendary actor set a new record, a viewership record was achieved and the Academy celebrated its platinum anniversary in a big way. Billy Crystal hosted the 70th Academy Awards on March 23, 1998, where one film made a “titanic” splash, and the ceremony saw its highest viewership of all time, with more than 55 million people tuning in — a record that stands today not only for the Oscars, but all live awards programs.
It’s a film that people either love or hate (or at least wonder what all the fuss is about), but either way, the huge impact that James Cameron‘s “Titanic” made on the film industry cannot be denied. The most expensive movie ever produced up to that time, many doubted that the romantic tragedy would result in box office gold. At one point I was thinking about Nick Nolte to play the beekeeper, and then I got a call in the middle of the night. "This is Peter Fonda." I don't know how he got it, we never sent it to him, but he said, "I've just read your script and that's me. You know, my dad was a beekeeper." I didn't know, but it turns out Henry Fonda had two or three hives in his backyard.

Peter Fonda in "Ulee's Gold"
Peter Fonda was born Hollywood royalty, as the only son of classic movie star Henry Fonda. Like his iconic elder sister Jane, he had a tense relationship with his father. Unlike Jane he didn't have his own On Golden Pond (1981) to share with his father. Their only film together was the forgotten Wanda Nevada (1979). Not that Peter's career was without its own creative and commercial peaks. The film with which he'll always be associated, Easy Rider (1969), the counter-culture smash that he both co-wrote and co-starred in with Dennis Hopper, was both.
Because most career-retrospectives of Peter Fonda appear to begin and end with Easy Rider (1969) we thought it would be more interesting today to look at the way his career started and what happened after Easy Rider...

It's a very sad day in Hollywood as legendary actor and Easy Rider star Peter Fonda has reportedly passed away. A rep for Fonda confirmed the actor's passing, but as of now, there's no details on a possible cause of death. Reportedly, Fonda had been spending a lot of time in the hospital with an undisclosed ailment which may have contributed to his passing. He was 79 years old.
Fonda is a member of the famous Fonda acting family, which is also comprised of father Henry, sister Jane, and daughter Bridget. Born in 1940 in New York City, the future Hollywood legend did not have the easiest childhood. When Fonda was 10 years old, his mother committed suicide in a mental hospital, although he didn't learn about the circumstances of her death until years later. Things got worse soon after on Fonda's 11th birthday, when he accidentally shot himself and nearly died. Years later,...

Jessica Biel has been playing both sides of the Hollywood coin for most of her career, alternating between wide releases and specialty fare. She was at it again this past weekend with two movies in theaters: new release "Playing for Keeps" from FilmDistrict and holdover "Hitchcock” from Fox Searchlight. Given the woeful $6 million gross with which “Keeps” opened, Biel would be smart to stick to the indie side of things. Biel began bouncing between crowd-pleasers and smaller fare early on. Her first live-action feature film, "Ulee's Gold," was followed by Disney's "I'll Be Home for Christmas" and Warner Bros.' "Summer Catch." Then came Lionsgate's raw and risqué "The Rules of Attraction," where she portrayed a party girl who was the polar opposite of Mary Camden, her character on TV's popular, wholesome "7th Heaven." AA Milne's Pooh Bear is one of the thickest, most tedious characters in fiction, but elsewhere in the movies apiarists and honey collectors are a mysterious, obsessive collection of individuals. One thinks of the taciturn father in Víctor Erice's Spirit of the Beehive, Marcello Mastroianni in Theo Angelopoulos's The Bee Keeper, Michel Piccoli in Louis Malle's Milou en mai and Peter Fonda's Oscar-nominated performance in Ulee's Gold. Honey (aka Bal) is the concluding film in Semih Kaplanoglu's The Yusuf Trilogy, about a boy growing up in rural north-eastern Turkey where his father keeps bees in hives at the top of tall trees in the nearby forest and supports his young wife and little son by collecting honey. The six-year-old Yusuf, a serious, introspective boy through whose large, expressive eyes the world is presented, has a serious stammer that sets him apart from most of those around him,...

I love that a heated discussion over Titanic’s infamous Oscar sweep of 1998 has already begun over at Laurent’s excellent retrospective. I guess it’s just the nature of this particular film. There is something about Titanic that hits a raw nerve in people and they feel a need to defend/criticize it so passionately.
As it happens, I fall in the ‘unconditional love’ category and I’m not afraid to admit it. To this day I have a passion for Titanic, a film that so perfectly matches what a glorious, spellbinding, big spectacle romance against an historic backdrop should be, and those films are so rare, especially when they are made with such precise and meticulous detail from James Cameron.
We shouldn’t be embarrassed over how much we loved Titanic in the 90′s. We should embrace it. So as our third ‘Choose The Winners’ article, we are...
