With six Oscar nominations (with two wins), well over a dozen Golden Globe nods spanning 40+ years, three Primetime Emmys, and countless other accolades, Jessica Lange has had a fantastic career in Hollywood. But at 74, she thinks it may be time to hang it up – not because she’s older but partly due to comic book movies.
Speaking with The Telegraph, Jessica Lange said that she is concerned at how far creativity has fallen as a priority. And one of the key culprits is the sort of fare that Marvel, DC and more are pushing in theaters multiple times a year. “I’m not interested in these big comic-book franchise films. I think that they’ve sacrificed this art that we’ve been involved in…for the sake of profit.” While Lange didn’t explicitly say that the MCU is to blame for her leaving the business, consider this thought: “I...

Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we usually talk about movie stars and not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones they made in between. Today, however, we talk about Oscar movies (!), or better yet, movies that were snubbed of Oscar!
Conor and I welcome the wonderful Joe Reid & Chris Feil of the This Had Oscar Buzz podcast. An official podcast crossover! In today’s episode, we each choose an Oscar snub that still sticks in our craw, and use them as a jumping off point for the categories of that respective year.
We reference two great past Oscar Buzz eps (A Thousand Acres & Elizabethtown), the lasting influence of Lisa Gerrard, Dan’s favorite film performance, Joe’s love for Marcelo Zarvos’ brilliant score for The Door in the Floor, Chris’ admiration of the singular costume (and production) design in Down With Love,...

These days, it’s refreshing to speak with someone like Mike Leigh whose vocabulary hasn’t been corrupted by the latest Hollywood trends. For example, when Leigh uses the word “content,” it’s doesn’t mean the same thing as 98 of his peers, for whom the term has come to describe the swill that fills the various streamers’ pipelines.
For Leigh, “content” refers to the substance of a film or play, as I found when asking Leigh, who is the subject of a 14-film, career-spanning retrospective by New York’s Film at Lincoln Center — from “Bleak Moments” to “Peterloo,” with two shorts thrown in for good measure — where he thinks audiences unfamiliar with his work ought to begin.
“I certainly don’t think anybody should be preoccupied with seeing my films for the first time in chronological order,” he says. “I think you could drop anchor anywhere and start.”

The box office fortunes of Warner Bros.’ “Fantastic Beasts” series continue to sink after the 43 million domestic opening of the third installment, “The Secrets of Dumbledore.” But even if this marks the end for the Eddie Redmayne-fronted spinoff films, it won’t be the end of the studio’s plans for J.K. Rowling’s Wizarding World. The domestic opening weekend for “Secrets of Dumbledore” was 31 down from the 62 million opening of “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald,” a sequel poorly received by both critics and “Harry Potter” fans. While “Secrets” has received slightly better audience reception, the 191 million global launch is down 25 from “Crimes of Grindelwald,” which likely means it will be the first “Harry Potter” or Wizarding World film to fall short of the 500 million mark. Even considering the lingering impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic on some overseas markets like China, these numbers aren’t the ones any...

The Fantastic Beasts series is credited with expanding the Wizarding World first introduced in the Harry Potter movies. Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore has continued the trend of introducing more magical creatures through Newt Scamander’s adventures, with the magizoologist already encountering dozens of animals.

Fans on Ranker have cast their votes on which fantastic beast they love the most, ranging from powerful creatures like the Thunderbird to smaller ones like Bowtruckles. Since these take into account hundreds of votes, there’s no doubt that these creatures are the pick of the bunch in the Fantastic Beasts franchise and the Wizarding as a whole.

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore could have used a little more magic on its opening weekend. Strike that, make that a lot more magic. The third chapter in Warner Bros.’ Harry Potter spin-off saga debuted to a less-than-fantastic 43 million in North America over the long Easter frame—the lowest roll-out in the series to date. However, some good news came from overseas, where the wizarding tale has been able to conjure significantly more enchantment, taking in 150.4 million in its first two weekends of release. Bereft of any magic all together was Sony’s fifth-place finisher Father Stu,, the inspirational story of a boxer-turned-priest starring Mark Wahlberg. Despite the religious-themed film’s Easter arrival, it laid an egg with a 5.7 million bow.
While the latest Fantastic Beasts is only the third chapter in a planned series of five, the Potter prequel franchise seems to already be showing signs of diminishing box-office returns.

"Everyone is keeping secrets..." Netflix has revealed an official trailer for another intriguing home invasion suspense thriller called Intrusion, which looks a lot like so many of these other home invasion thrillers over the last few years. When a husband and wife move to a small town, a home invasion leaves the wife traumatized and suspicious that those around her might not be who they seem. Freida Pinto and Logan Marshall-Green star as the husband and wife who move into a very slick modern home built out in the desert. The film's cast also includes Robert John Burke, Sarah Minnich, Mark Sivertsen, and Hayes Hargrove. This looks like it might have some good twists in the second half, but the rest of it just seems so plain and obvious and derivative. These are all ending up the same - no one is who they seem. Check it out. Here's the...

Michael Yezerski composed the music for the film “Blindspotting” and was invited back for the series currently airing on Starz, this time collaborating with fellow musician Ambrose Akinmusire. Dance and music play a key role in the series alongside the spoken word, with sequences meant to be evocative and used to enhance the characters’ emotions.
The Starz adaptation was created by Rafael Casal and Daveed Diggs, who wrote, produced and starred in the original film, and picks up six months after the movie’s timeline. Ashley, played by Jasmine Cephas Jones, and her partner of 12 years and father of their son, Miles, played by Casal, grapple with incarceration as mother and child are forced to move in with Miles’ mother and half-sister.

Director Mike Leigh’s social-personal observations of life as it is lived in the U.K. always get to me — this one may simply be a more realistic soap opera, but it’s so good that one pays no attention to technical matters, who the actors are or when they are ‘acting’ … it just ‘is,’ and it’s so involving that one becomes anxious over the smallest thing. Leigh’s most acclaimed picture is the perfect antidote for bloated event filmmaking. And unlike some of his pictures, you walk out with a smile on your face.

“We’re trained by the society and popular culture to bury secrets within us, when It’s not rooted in our instincts to keep them like this. Therefore it brings the inevitable struggle & conflict. Our persistent trials of escapism only lead to more silent sufferings. But, the question is, are we alone in this journey?”

Director Souradeep Datta proved a strong command on visual presentation and audio soundscapes with his debut film “Colour Palette of a Soldier“. In his follow up, “Secrets”, the director further develops his technical skills while offering a more concrete narrative. As a result, the production shows both growth and an understanding of previous strengths.
As mentioned, the sound and visuals play a key part in the success of the short film. Notably, both elements create a sense of intimacy which captures the subjects’ desperation and anxiety.

The worst sin of “The Secrets We Keep” is not that it so blatantly and flagrantly rips off Ariel Dorfman’s play and subsequent movie “Death and the Maiden” — although if the Chilean author wanted to sue for a credit, he’s certainly got a case.
The history of art is the history of creators borrowing from each other, whether they call it homage or reference or appropriation. What grates about director Yuval Adler and his co-writer Ryan Covington pilfering so obviously from Dorfman’s work is that they haven’t done anything particularly interesting with it.
Is there potential in changing the setting of “Death and the Maiden” from an unnamed Latin American country to the USA of the 1950s, still reeling in various ways from World War II? Absolutely. Do Adler and Covington achieve that potential? Not in the slightest.

It’s been a rueful joke for three-quarters of a century now that after World War 2, there were miraculously no Nazis (or even ex-Nazis) left in Germany. To start unblemished postwar lives, an entire generation invented cover stories to minimize or deny the political affiliations most of them had before Axis defeat. Some went further than others, adopting whole new identities in new lands to bury wartime deeds. The fictitious exhumation that is “The Secrets We Keep” has Noomi Rapace as a European refugee appalled to realize her former uniformed persecutor now lives in the same American small town as she does.

Kate Winslet can do anything ... except save this movie from quirky overkill. The Dressmaker, based on a 2000 novel by Rosalie Ham, gives the actress a hell of a role. She's Tilly Dunnage, a 1950's fashionista who's decided to return home to dusty Dungatar (an apt name), the small Aussie town that spawned her. Tilly got run out of Dungatar 20 years ago, when she was just a 10 year-old, for allegedly murdering her schoolmate Stewart Pettyman. Everyone believes she bashed the kid's skull in – including her snaggle-toothed old mum, Molly (Judy Davis,...

Western remake “The Magnificent Seven” (Sony) faces off against animated “Storks” (Warner Bros.) for #1 this weekend. But ranking is less important than how much the two movies pull in audiences. This fight pits the latest iteration of the venerable Hollywood western against a new example of the dominant genre ruling the 2016 box office.
Last weekend’s three duds and a big drop in Top Ten box office can be explained by retread projects that lacked appeal. However after a quick start to the season where six out of seven initial wide releases disappointed (Clint Eastwood’s “Sully” will end up grossing more than the other six combined), this week sees only two new wide releases.
That’s actually a sign of strength, since both look appealing enough to boost numbers. It’s an interesting combo, with both films having potential but neither guaranteed to open as well as “Sully” ($35 million), although both cost more.

So entertaining, so unexpected, so wonderfully oddball, so damn good. Witty genre-busting simmering with pathos, humor, and calamity. I’m “biast” (pro): love Kate Winslet; desperate for stories about women
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
I have not read the source material
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
Like a gunslinger riding into town. Determined and dangerous. This is how director Jocelyn Moorhouse depicts the return of Tilly Dunnage to her backwater Australian town of Dungatar. The locale may be vaguely western-ish — remote and dusty — but the year is 1951 and Tilly comes armed only with a Singer sewing machine, her Parisian-inspired haute-couture style, and a superpowered ache for revenge.
I had no idea what I was in for with The Dressmaker, and even that opening — with its witty genre-busting that culminates in Tilly’s snarl to herself of “I’m back, you bastards” — couldn’t possibly have clued me in.

The last time Vulture talked with Kate Winslet, about her role in the upcoming Steve Jobs biopic, she was drinking rosé while cooking a chicken. We caught up with the actress again last week at the Toronto Film Festival to discuss The Dressmaker, a manic, absurdist Australian comedy-drama from director Jocelyn Moorhouse (Proof, A Thousand Acres) based on the novel by Rosalie Ham. The book and film are about a Paris-trained seamstress who returns to her minuscule hometown in desolate southeast Australia, from which she was exiled as a child for allegedly killing a boy — and winds up outfitting the entire female population in couture. The tone is more menacing than it sounds — Moorhouse has called it “Unforgiven with a sewing machine” — and the juxtaposition of all that 1950s glamour against those gnarled bushes and tumbleweeds is striking. Plus, it involves Winslet spending some quality time with Liam...

Australian filmmaker Jocelyn Moorhouse has had an odd career. After making an auspicious home-turf debut with 1991’s Proof — about a blind photographer, his housekeeper and his best friend (played by Russell Crowe) — she offered up gloppy back-to-back slices of deep-dish Americana: one sweet (the Winona Ryder-led ensemble piece How to Make an American Quilt), one sour (her adaptation of Jane Smiley’s novel A Thousand Acres, with Michelle Pfeiffer and Jessica Lange). Following an 18-year hiatus, Moorhouse is behind the camera — and down under — again, though it would be a stretch

A needle and thread is an unexpected combination that changes lives in the forthcoming "The Dressmaker." Well that, coupled with movie star good looks. Tilly Dunnage (Kate Winslet), a beautiful and talented misfit, after many years working as a dressmaker in exclusive Parisian fashion houses, returns home to the tiny middle-of-nowhere town of Dungatar to right the wrongs...
