WWE’s Mount Rushmore: The Undertaker, Shawn Michaels and Many Legends Missing From Idris Elba’s List
Image
The recent interaction Idris Elba had with John Cena has dropped a bombshell in the professional wrestling community. The Suicide Squad fame has announced a Mount Rushmore list of WWE legends of his own, and it’s baffling, not only because it’s far from what the popular opinion is, but also because the list lacks seriousness.

The list became a major talking point because of those legends and veteran performers he did not take into account, more than those he included in the list. Amongst others, he did not even consider, The Undertaker and Shawn Michaels stood out as the most astonishing ones.

Idris Elba reveals the name he would choose for a fantasy WWE Mount Rushmore Idris Elba with John Cena in Heads of State trailer. (Image Credit: Heads of State)

The discussion between Idris Elba and John Cena occurred during a casual interaction between them for Complex.

'The Thursday Murder Club' Director Teases Netflix's New Murder Mystery With a "Mount Rushmore" Cast
Image
Netflix could have another gigantic hit on its hands with the upcoming release of The Thursday Murder Club. Based on the best-selling series of novels by British TV personality Richard Osman, the story follows a group of pensioners in a retirement home who spend their days enjoying murder mystery novels, until one day, a real murder mystery is at their doorstep. The books are highly renowned by critics and readers, but it's the movie's cast that has fans truly excited. The Thursday Murder Club features four of the most recognizable and beloved veteran British actors, whom the director, Chris Columbus, calls the "Mount Rushmore of British action giants!"

Director Chris Columbus spoke to Empire Magazine about The Thursday Murder Club and revealed that he was "intimidated" by the movie's legendary cast. "It was the Mount Rushmore of the British Acting Giants," he began. Columbus has worked with some gigantic ensemble casts,...

The Gilded Cage of Auteurism: Wes Anderson and the Price of Style
Image
Many a True Word Has Been Screamed in Jest Over 800,000 people have laughed at the viral YouTube parody Leaked Wes Anderson Meltdown on Set, where a faux version of the famously composed director rants on the other end of the phoneline: “If it’s not going to be symmetrical, it’s not going in the f***ing movie!” The clip is completely manufactured- but, like all satire, funny because it’s true. Wes Anderson’s signature symmetry has become more than a visual preference; it’s an artistic law in his filmography. As the saying goes, “Many a true word is spoken in jest.” The meltdown video is satire, yes- but it also speaks to a deeper artistic tension. What happens when a filmmaker becomes a brand? When style starts to dictate substance? That’s what makes the video so funny. It taps into the unspoken truth of Wes Anderson...

Every Bill Murray Role in a Wes Anderson Movie, Ranked
Image
Few directors have a visual style as instantly recognizable as Wes Anderson. From the symmetrical framing to the pastel colors and quirky, deadpan characters, Anderson’s films often feel like storybooks brought to life. But beyond his carefully crafted vibe lies an unmistakable sense of loyalty when it comes to casting. Like Quentin Tarantino’s go-to partnership with Samuel L. Jackson or Christopher Nolan’s long-running collaboration with Cillian Murphy, Anderson has his own trusted circle of actors. And one of the most prominent ones is Bill Murray.

Bill Murray is a legend in both comedy and drama. His calm humor and emotional depth fit perfectly in Wes Anderson’s unique movie world. Whether he’s playing a sad ocean explorer, a grumpy hotel worker, or a quiet background character, Murray always feels right at home. His style matches Anderson’s storytelling so well that it’s hard to picture...

Kumail Nanjiani Digs Into His ‘Poker Face’ and ‘Only Murders’ Double Act
Image
By pure coincidence, Kumail Nanjiani appeared in two comedies this season in which quirky folks solve a regional murder. In Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building,” the two-time Emmy nominee plays a supporting role as Rudy “Christmas Guy” Thurber, a furtive resident of the Arconia building who wears garish holiday sweaters and plays up his year-round yuletide obsession on social media.

In “Poker Face,” he guest-stars as Gator Joe, a Florida policeman and influencer with a pet alligator who becomes the target of a rival cop (Gaby Hoffmann). TheWrap spoke with the busy actor about visiting comedy Rushmore and why “Columbo” inspired him to take on these fun guest spots.

“I asked to be on “Only Murders in the Building.” Steve Martin, Martin Short — I’ve been watching them my whole life. If there’s a comedy Rushmore, those guys are on it. It...

Wes Anderson Breaks Down the Exquisite Opening Title Sequence of ‘The Phoenician Scheme’
Image
From the curtain closing on the “Rushmore” cast dancing in a high school gym to Gwyneth Paltrow coming off the bus in “The Royal Tenenbaums,” Wes Anderson’s filmography is loaded with memorable slow-motion shots. The title sequence of “The Phoenician Scheme,” though, is arguably the most visually exacting and narratively layered in his filmography.

After initially being declared dead, Zsa-zsa Korda (Benicio Del Toro) somehow survived his plane crashing in the film’s opening scene, and in the title sequence that follows, we see him back home in his bathtub. In a wide, high-angle shot, the camera pointed straight down, we watch in slow motion as a team of servants move in and out of frame, tending to the bandaged tycoon’s every need as he reads his book, smokes his cigar, drinks his wine, and listens to a record of composer Igor Stravinsky’s “Apollo” on turntable behind him.

’The Phoenician Scheme’ Poised to Overtake Wes Anderson’s Career-Launching Hit Roger Ebert Called “A Little Mean”
Image
Director Wes Anderson has developed quite a sterling reputation for delivering movies that are unmistakably his, and also commercially bankable. But his post-pandemic run has been slightly underwhelming, especially when compared to the high benchmark that he set for himself with The Grand Budapest Hotel a decade or so ago. That movie concluded its run with over $170 million worldwide and is largely considered to be Anderson’s only crossover hit. His other films, including his latest, The Phoenician Scheme, have generally catered to his devoted fan base.

The movie expanded into wide release this weekend, following a record debut seven days ago in just six theaters. The Phoenician Scheme has grossed around $7 million domestically, and another $11 million from overseas markets, for a cumulative global haul of $18 million in around 10 days of release. Produced on a reported budget of $30 million, the movie is already set to overtake the $19 million lifetime global haul of Anderson’s Rushmore,...

Jason Schwartzman Dropped Out of Richard Kelly’s Film, But Jake Gyllenhaal Turned It Into a Cult Classic
Image
Jason Schwartzman was supposed to lead the star-studded cast of Richard Kelly’s Donnie Darko. He expressed interest in the script and agreed to play Donnie, but he eventually had to drop out due to scheduling conflicts. It was at this point that Gyllenhaal got his hands on the script and was mesmerised by it. He once said that he pulled over to the side of the road to finish reading it.

Donnie Darko is one of those rare sci-fi psychological thrillers that leave the viewers with more questions than answers. However, the film received poor reviews at the Sundance Film Festival, following which Kelly found it hard to find U.S. distributors for the film. While its initial theatrical gross was a measly sum, the film went on to attain more money on reissues and a cult status.

Jake Gyllenhaal saved Donnie Darko after Jason Schwartzman had to drop out of it Jake Gyllenhaal,...

Wes Anderson Put a Great Deal of Time and Thought Into His Upcoming Criterion Career Box Set
Image
Last week, Criterion Collection announced it would be releasing “The Wes Anderson Archive: Ten Films, Twenty-Five Years” box set featuring 4K versions of the director’s first 10 feature films, starting with “Bottle Rocket” (1996) through “The French Dispatch of the Liberty, Kansas Evening Sun” (2021).

While the celebrated director’s films have previously been released on DVD and Blu-ray, including Criterion versions up through “The Grand Budapest Hotel” (2014), when Anderson was on the Filmmaker Toolkit podcast to discuss his new film “The Phoenician Scheme,” he made clear this wasn’t simply a matter of doing Uhd/Hdr upgrades.

“We’ve been working on it for some time,” said Anderson of the upcoming box set. “I like the idea of having this set. It’s ten movies, it’s an even number.”

Anderson’s relationship with Criterion dates back to “Rushmore” (1998) and, based on his comments on the podcast, working with Criterion to...

Owen Wilson Wants to Make a Western With an Unsurprising Director (and It's Not Taylor Sheridan) [Exclusive]
Image
Owen Wilsonhas had a fascinating career. Known for his comedic chops, he recently won over Marvel fans with his role as Mobius M. Mobius in the Disney+ series Loki. Wilson also has a longstanding friendship and working relationship with director and writer Wes Anderson. The two have collaborated on 8 of Anderson's films, with the last being The French Dispatch in 2021. But with Anderson's new film, The Phoenician Scheme, coming out at the same time as Wilson's new Apple TV+ series, Stick, fans are curious to see if the pair plan to collaborate again soon.

During a junket for Stick, Collider's Christina Radish asked Wilson about the potential of reuniting with his old Texas friend. When asked if doing another Anderson film was something that he was hoping for, Wilson responded that if they were to work together again, they'd want to do a Western. He went even further to...

Wes Anderson’s ‘The Phoenician Scheme’ Tees Up Strong Indie Weekend With Angelika Film Center Takeover – Specialty Preview
Image
Focus Features has done a full takeover of the Angelika Film Center with The Phoenician Scheme on all six screens for filmmaker Wes Anderson’s latest. There’s a lobby and café redesign for full immersion, a jazz band, custom cocktails, t-shirts and totes as the film, which clocked a lengthy standing ovation at its recent Cannes world premiere (see Deadline review) bows theatrically in limited release at six locations including NYC’s Alamo Brooklyn and AMC Lincoln Square and AMC’s The Grove, Century City and Burbank in LA.

Around this time in 2023, Anderson’s Asteroid City, also from Focus, delivered a massive jolt to the arthouse and specialty world with a $790k three-day weekend, also at six theaters, including a takeover of the Landmark LA. That opening per-theater average of $132k was the biggest in years for a helmer known to energize the specialty box office. His Grand...

Where to Watch ‘The Phoenician Scheme’: Is Wes Anderson’s New Movie Streaming?
Image
Wes Anderson, one of Hollywood’s most revered and identifiable contemporary filmmakers, is back with “The Phoenician Scheme.” The writer-director’s follow-up to his acclaimed 2023 sci-fi dramedy, “Asteroid City,” is another high-concept, highly stylized ensemble film bursting with more vibrant pastels and deadpan gags than you can count. But will it be able to live up to the standard of Anderson’s past films? There is only one way to find out.

Here is how, when and where you can watch “The Phoenician Scheme.”

When does “The Phoenician Scheme” come out?

“The Phoenician Scheme” is set to be released in limited theaters on Friday, May 30. It will expand nationwide on Friday, June 6.

Is “The Phoenician Scheme” streaming?

Bill Murray's Phoenician Scheme Cameo Sums Up All Of His Wes Anderson Roles
Image
To paraphrase a famous historical father figure, I come to psychoanalyze Wes Anderson's movies, not Anderson himself. To put it mildly, Anderson's films are suffused with Daddy Issues. From Royal Tenenbaum to Steve Zissou to the fantastic Mr. Fox himself, Anderson's filmography is littered with problematic patriarchs. Yet it'd be inaccurate to label these characters as wholly bad people, for each of them has a journey to take which teaches them how to be better fathers, better leaders, and most of all, better men. While the problematic patriarch is an Anderson trope as much as color-coded costumes and diorama-like sets, the filmmaker has found various ways to play around with the archetype rather than always directly portray it. For instance, "The Darjeeling Limited" is notable in that its father figure is (allegedly) never seen, "The Grand Budapest Hotel" features a hotel concierge acting as a substitute father for his bellhop,...

The Phoenician Scheme Review: Wes Anderson Loses the Plot in Breakneck, Tiresome Spy Comedy
Image
Note: This review was originally published as part of our 2025 Cannes coverage. Ghost Trail opens in theaters on May 30.

We begin with music that’s uncharacteristically tense for a Wes Anderson film––chugging cellos leading a full orchestra that’s more Mission: Impossible than Moonrise Kingdom––and opener à la Nolan blockbusters: an assassination attempt. It’s an exhilarating launch into a story that starts petering out soon after. Renowned criminal mastermind Zsa Zsa Korda (Benicio del Toro) sits before a gorgeously designed train car much like the off-white, wooden, burgundy, and plaid train car that will take him and his associates around Phoenicia for the rest of the movie. An unfortunate associate is crammed into the back corner. Without warning, a bomb obliterates any semblance of said corner, and we launch into The Phoenician Scheme, never to take a breath.

Zsa Zsa is a downright horrible man, as blunt...

‘Mountainhead’ Mines AI Anxieties at Just the Right Time
Image
Imagine a future that may or may not be too far from now in which an AI video generator is capable of cranking out an entire movie.

Then picture the movie’s script is derived from a large language model fed nothing but the entire run of the HBO series “Succession” and every article from the past six months written about the reigning tech titans of our time: Zuckerberg, Musk and Altman. Maybe a dash of Peter Thiel.

And then for the prompt intended to bring this to life, imagine typing into the AI video generator:

“Create a movie that feels like it could be set in the world of ‘Succession’ but with entirely different characters populated from Silicon Valley instead of legacy media. Make a satire of the worst case scenario of AI run amok, leavened with plenty of humor in order to avoid inducing depression.”

That might be...

‘Karate Kid: Legends’ Headed for $25 Million Debut as ‘Lilo & Stitch’ Continues Box Office Dominance
Image
“Karate Kid: Legends” will ride a wave of nostalgia to a $25 million opening weekend.

The film brings together Jackie Chan, the action legend and star of 2010’s “Karate Kid,” with Ralph Macchio, who popularized the crane kick way back in the 1984 original. The Sony Pictures release will also be lifted by the popularity of “Cobra Kai,” the Netflix series which extended the franchise into streaming. Some rival studios think “Karate Kid: Legends” could hit $30 million in its inaugural weekend if the fans turn out in force.

Even the more conservative projections would be a respectable result for the sequel, which cost a relatively economical $45 million to produce. However, it won’t be enough to unseat Disney’s “Lilo & Stitch,” last weekend’s box office champ. The family-friendly release earned a massive $182.6 million over the Memorial Day holiday. It should generate more than $60 million in its second weekend. Globally, “Lilo...

Where Was Top Gun Filmed? Every Major Location, Explained
Image
When moviegoers fall madly in love with a film, at a certain point it's not enough just to watch it over and over again. They need to devour every morsel of trivia and every behind-the-scenes anecdote. They dive deep into the origins of the production, and speculate as to how the film might've played if different actors had been cast or a different director had been hired. They might even take the next step and tap out fan fiction, which can be quite profitable as E.L. James proved when her "Twilight" erotica became a publishing phenomenon called "Fifty Shades of Grey."

For those who don't have an S&m-infused novel about their favorite characters in them, the next step in heightening one's personal fan experience might be to visit the actual filming locations. If your favorite movie happens to be James Cameron's "Ghosts of the Abyss," I would strongly advise against this,...

Wes Anderson Teases Next Project With Richard Ayoade & Roman Coppola – Cannes
Image
Wes Anderson largely kept tightlipped about his next feature project other than to say it does “have a darkness.” He’s collaborating with Roman Coppola again, who the filmmaker always co-writes with, as well as The Phoenician Scheme star Richard Ayoade on the next title.

Anderson didn’t specify whether Ayoade was starring and/or co-writing. Ayoade starred in two Roald Dahl short adaptations of Anderson’s: Oscar winner The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar and The Rat Catcher. Ayoade plays Sergio in Phoenician Scheme, which is Anderson’s fourth pic to premiere in Competition at Cannes.

Cannes: Wes Anderson’s ‘The Phoenician Scheme’ scores mixed reviews from critics
Image
The breaking news out of the Cannes Film Festival on Sunday was that Wes Anderson made another Wes Anderson movie.

The Oscar-winning director launched The Phoenician Scheme at the prestigious festival, the fourth time Anderson has premiered one of his projects on the French Riviera following Moonrise Kingdom, The French Dispatch, and Asteroid City.

“More linear than Asteroid City or The Grand Budapest Hotel and yet significantly harder to follow than either of them, The Phoenician Scheme is the busiest of Anderson’s films, and also — at least on first viewing — the least rewarding,” wrote Indiewire critic David Ehlrich in his mixed review. It’s a sentiment shared by several top critics.

“The swashbuckling sire, the deadpan ingénue, the sans serif font, the one-point perspective — Anderson’s held fast to his favorite elements even as his canvases have gotten broader and his style even more fastidious,” wrote Vulture critic Alison Wilmore.

It’s not Cannes without Wes Anderson, and the Houston native’s The Phoenician Scheme has its world premiere Sunday night in Cannes, notching a 7½-minute ovation. First-time Anderson-film star Mia Threapleton was tearing up as the crowd’s applause continued.

“The only thing really I can think to say — I think of 12 words to say that would stand for everything in this movie,” Anderson said to the audience after the screening. He then proceeded to point at and name-check his castmates who were on hand, along with longtime writing and producing partner Roman Coppola. Here’s how it went down:

‘He Was Furious’: Wes Anderson Recalls Clashing With Gene Hackman During One of the Late Actor's Final Films
Image
Acclaimed filmmaker Wes Anderson recalls the uncomfortable end of his time on the set of The Royal Tenenbaums with the late, great Gene Hackman.

Per Entertainment Weekly, Anderson recalled his time working with Hackman, specifically on 2001's The Royal Tenenbaums. "Gene was very annoyed about the money," Anderson said of the star's reaction to the small flat fee offered to the film's cast, which was used in the director's previous work, Rushmore. "He was furious. Also, he didn't want to do the film anyway. I talked him into it - I just didn't go away."

"He gave us a lot. For that small amount of money, I feel like he gave us everything he had," Anderson added. The filmmaker went on to explain that, while Hackman was overtly dedicated to the production on set, he was quick to make an exit once The Royal Tenenbaums wrapped. "Not a word. In fact,...

‘The Phoenician Scheme’ Review: A Brilliant Benicio del Toro Leads Wes Anderson’s Poignant Narrative Jigsaw Puzzle
Image
It’s been a challenging few years to be a fan of Wes Anderson (not that it’s ever really been easy).

Since the commercial and critical success of The Grand Budapest Hotel, the filmmaker has released works that have doubled down on the quirkiness of his visual style and grown more intellectually meta-textual. One sparked minor controversy (Isle of Dogs) and another inspired more confusion than admiration (The French Dispatch). His most recent feature-length project instigated some eye-rolls (Asteroid City) and a 39-minute short released later that year was mostly ignored (The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar, an underrated gem). In general, Anderson’s movies have been criticized for being so insular and indulgent of the auteur’s trademark aesthetics that they distance everyone except the stans and the stars.

The Phoenician Scheme, Anderson’s latest film, won’t have true haters reconsidering their options, but it will entice...

Wes Anderson Remembers Gene Hackman Being “Furious” About ‘The Royal Tenenbaums’ Flat-Fee Salary: “We Had Friction”
Image
Ahead of the Cannes premiere of his latest film, The Phoenician Scheme, Wes Anderson reflected on the 12 (going on 13) features he’s made, including his approach to keeping costs down while employing elaborate world-building set designs.

In a new interview with The Times U.K., the Oscar winner reflected on how his breakthrough sophomore film Rushmore, starring eventual frequent collaborator Bill Murray, cemented his flat-fee salary approach for all talent, to the chagrin of the late Gene Hackman.

“Gene was very annoyed about the money,” Anderson said of the pic that followed the aforementioned 1998 feature, 2001’s The Royal Tenenbaums, which marks one of Hackman’s final performances. “He was furious. Also, he didn’t want to do the film anyway. I talked him into it — I just didn’t go...

“Little By Little, I Understood”: Wes Anderson’s Way Of Casting Benicio del Toro In His New Movie Was So Unusual, He Didn’t Even Realize He Was The Lead
Image
Benicio del Toro explains the unusual way in which Wes Anderson cast him in The Phoenician Scheme. Set for release early next month, the Anderson-directed movie features del Toro as Zsa-zsa Korda, who meets up with his daughter, Liesl, who he names his sole heir. The pair travel the world together as Zsa-zsa attempts to close business deals and bond with Liesl along the way. In addition to del Toro, the movie features Mia Threaplton, Michael Cera, Willem Dafoe, F. Murray Abraham, Scarlett Johansson, Riz Ahmed, and Tom Hanks.

Per The LA Times, del Toro and Anderson detail how the actor got cast in The Phoenician Scheme. According to the actor, Anderson approached him at a dinner at the Cannes Film Festival after he premiered The French Dispatch to tell him about a new project, with 20 pages already written. He specifically had del Toro in mind. Gradually, the director...

“I don’t think it’s a coincidence”: Real Reason Why Studio Ghibli Has Never Hired a Female Director in 39 Years
Image
Okay, let’s get things straight: Studio Ghibli is magic. From floating bathhouses and forest spirits to fierce princesses and flying delivery girls, Ghibli’s films have inspired whole generations of dreamers.

But for all the wonderful things they get to show on screen, something not-so-wonderful is happening behind the scenes: not a single woman has ever been given the director’s chair in nearly four decades of Ghibli films. Yes, you heard right. Thirty-nine years. No woman director. Let’s talk about why that’s the situation.

The Studio Ghibli girl paradox

First, a little backstory. Hayao Miyazaki, the complete legend, established Studio Ghibli in 1985 and essentially became the soul and heart of the whole studio. He’s the mastermind behind classics like Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, My Neighbor Totoro, and a whole bunch of other amazing films. If Ghibli had a Mount Rushmore, he’d be all four faces on it.

Olivia Williams Details Harrowing Pancreatic Cancer Journey Where She Was Called “Crazy” Amid Misdiagnoses
Image
Olivia Williams opened up about her harrowing journey with pancreatic cancer, revealing she experienced years of misdiagnoses and dismissals by doctors. The professionally trained British actress is now supporting the upcoming Tcs London Marathon‘s charity of the year, Pancreatic Cancer UK, calling for a cheap test that would lead to earlier detection of the disease.

Speaking to The Times U.K. in a new interview, The Crown star discussed her experience with VIPoma (vasoactive intestinal peptide-secreting tumor), a rare neuroendocrine tumor of the pancreas that is detected in 1 out of 1 million people yearly. Notoriously difficult to diagnose early, pancreatic cancer is among the deadliest of the common cancers.

Williams said she first experienced symptoms a decade ago, eventually embarking on a four-year journey where she visited 10 doctors in three countries to get to the root of her illness. She recalled being misdiagnosed with lupus, perimenopause and other forms of cancer.

Michael Cera Joins The Wonderful World Of Wes Anderson In The Phoenician Scheme
Image
The cast of Wes Anderson players continues to be one of the starriest rosters in all of Hollywood. Whenever the director sets up a new project, he has an increasing spread of go-to names ready to enter his meticulously-crafted worlds (Bill Murray! Jason Schwartzman! Tilda Swinton!), whilst always expanding it with new faces. In The Phoenician Scheme, Anderson’s follow-up to 2023’s Asteroid City, he’s welcoming someone who’s long been an Anderson acolyte, but has never worked with the man himself: Michael Cera.

Here, Cera plays Björn, a Norwegian tutor hired to educate the sons of Benicio Del Toro’s businessman Zsa-Zsa Korda – a role that unexpectedly takes him across the world with Korda, and the businessman’s daughter, Mia Threapleton’s nun Liesl. For Cera, The Phoenician Scheme was a chance to work with a filmmaker he’s long admired. “I saw The Royal Tenenbaums in the theatre.

Wes Anderson Is Up to His Old Tricks in First 'The Phoenician Scheme' Footage at CinemaCon
Image
Wes Anderson is back this summer with The Phoenician Scheme. The first trailer from the indie filmmaker's new espionage thriller debuted at CinemaCon today, and Collider's Britta DeVore is on the scene. The film opens in limited release on May 30, 2025, before opening wide on June 7.

In the new trailer, a man (Benicio del Toro) lies in a cornfield following a plane crash. Barely surviving the accident, he decides that he must choose his successor. That successor will be his daughter, who is somewhat inconveniently a nun. Benedict Cumberbatch pops in with a ridiculous beard while an assassin comes for everything del Toro’s character has built during his lifetime. The trailer is shot in Anderson's now-trademark style, complete with his beloved Futura typeface. The trailer was not released to the public, so you'll just have to rely on our "surveillance report" to get you up to speed until we...

Wes Anderson Receives First Career Retrospective of His Work at Cinémathèque Française in Paris
Image
Not many artists can assume the impact of their work before it’s released out onto the world, but from Wes Anderson’s early days, he knew how special everything that goes into his films would one day be to the masses. From Max Fischer’s sports jacket and beret in “Rushmore” to Auggie’s camera and pipe in “Asteroid City,” every detail in an Anderson film is intricately and thoughtfully designed, so much so that Cinémathèque Française in Paris has decided to honor the Texas-born auteur with his first career retrospective.

As per The New York Times, Anderson has been carefully storing and keeping track of his films’ paraphernalia ever since Columbia Pictures sold materials off his first feature “Bottle Rocket” without his consent. For two-and-a-half years, curators from Cinémathèque Française and the Design Museum in London pored over a treasure trove of items locked away in Anderson’s storage facility in Kent,...

'He Was a Tough Nut': Bill Murray Recalls Working With Gene Hackman on The Royal Tenenbaums
Image
Wes Anderson’s 2001 dark comedy film, The Royal Tenenbaums, had no shortage of star power in its cast, including Oscar-winner Gene Hackman. Hackman was found deceased in his home with his wife Betsy Arakawa and one of their dogs at the end of February. Per Variety, Hackman’s The Royal Tenenbaums co-star, Bill Murray, talked about working with the late actor in an interview with the Associated Press.

“He was a tough nut, Gene Hackman. But he was really good,” Murray told the outlet. “And he was really difficult, we can say it now, but he was a tough guy. Older, great actors do not give young directors much of a chance. They’re really rough on them, and Gene was really rough on Wes (Anderson). I used to kind of step in there and just try to defend my friend,” said the Ghostbusters star.

Murray frequently collaborates with writer-director...

Gene Hackman at an event for The 60th Annual Golden Globe Awards (2003)
Gene Hackman's Best Royal Tenenbaums Scene Highlighted His Ferocity As An Actor
Gene Hackman at an event for The 60th Annual Golden Globe Awards (2003)
It is a testament to the depth and breadth of the career of Gene Hackman that, upon the announcement of his passing at the age of 95, people have come together on social media to praise him, but without a uniform winner among his large filmography. Comic-book fans can continue to marvel at how he set the standard for villainous characters with his take on Lex Luthor in "Superman: The Movie." Fans of modern action movies are no doubt fondly remembering his work in the tense and sweaty thriller "Crimson Tide," among other examples. And the number of dramas he made, introspective or otherwise, are nearly innumerable. You can find so many examples of brilliance in Gene Hackman's list of credits, across so many genres. One of the most common threads throughout his career was his deft ability to create effectively memorable confrontations with his fellow performers, taking what's written on...

Bill Murray Remembers Working With ‘Brilliant’ but ‘Tough’ Gene Hackman on ‘Royal Tenenbaums’
Image
Bill Murray remembered Gene Hackman’s brilliant acting, and occasionally irascible temperament on the set of The Royal Tenenbaums, following the news of Hackman’s death.

Murray happened to give two interviews yesterday where he spoke about Hackman, one to The Associated Press, the other on The Drew Barrymore Show. In both instances, Murray was equally frank about Hackman’s talents as he was about the hard time he gave director Wes Anderson during the shoot.

“He was a tough nut,” Murray told The AP, “but he was really good.

The Phoenician Scheme: Wes Anderson’s latest film reaches theatres in May

Focus Features has worked with filmmaker Wes Anderson on Asteroid City and Moonrise Kingdom, a collaboration turned out very well for them. The Forgotten Owen Wilson & Zach Galifianakis Movie Getting A Second Life On Prime Video
Image
Did you know that there's a movie out there starring Owen Wilson, Zach Galifianakis, Amy Poehler, the late Edward Hermann, "The Office's" Jenna Fischer, Peter Bogdanovich, and even Melissa Rauch from "The Big Bang Theory?" What if I told you the movie is written and directed by Matthew Weiner, a veteran of "The Sopranos" who went on to create "Mad Men?" Are you wondering why you haven't seen it before?! It's probably because that movie, 2014's "Are You Here," was a huge flop — but I'll get back to that in just a moment. First, what is "Are You Here" — which is currently proving pretty popular on Amazon Prime Video — about?

When we first meet Wilson's local weatherman Steve Dallas, he's a womanizer who barely does his job — often outsourcing the actual weather predictions to his assistant Delia Shepherd (Lauren Lapkus) before taking credit for them on air — and blows his money on expensive dates,...

How A Wes Anderson Box Office Flop Paved The Way For One Of The Director's Biggest Hits
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

Wes Anderon has earned his reputation as a singular filmmaker. His style is unmistakable, dating back to his breakthrough indie hit "Rushmore" up through his Oscar-winning smash "The Grand Budapest Hotel." There is no denying a Wes Anderson film when you see one. The filmmaker has worked consistently for going on 30 years now, which is no easy feat. There have been some speed bumps along the way, that much is certain, but Anderson always manages to recover.

One such speed bump came in 2009 with the release of Anderson's stop-motion animated feature "Fantastic Mr. Fox." Though it was embraced critically, the film was not a winner at the box office, to put it somewhat mildly. Against a reported $40 million budget, the film made just over $46 million worldwide in its original run. Yet, that film's relative failure ended up paving the way...
