With former Marvel talent at the wheel, a long-lost comic book universe will make a comeback few saw coming. Of the many comic book publishers to emerge during the boom of the early 1990s, Defiant Comics was one of the most innovative. Defiant was heading towards great things, but the market crashed before they could deliver their magnum opus, but now, 30 years later, it is returning to print. Jake Weaver, Defiant Comics fan and host of the Midnight on Earth podcast, has launched a Kickstarter for Schism: Be Careful What You Dream. Fans can choose from two different formats: four, single issues (in print or digital) or a deluxe hardcover compiling the singles. Many key creative personnel from Defiant’s heyday, such as Shooter, JJ Jackson and David Lapham are involved in Schism’s production.

Their involvement ensures Schism stays faithful to Defiant’s original mission.

TV News Roundup: Lifetime’s ‘College Admissions Scandal’ Movie Casts Penelope Ann Miller, Mia Kirshner
In today’s roundup, Lifetime announces the cast of “The College Admissions Scandal” and the “Vikings” creator is in development on a series about Charlemagne.

Casting

Penelope Ann Miller and Mia Kirshner will headline the Lifetime movie “The College Admissions Scandal,” based on the true events of more than 50 families that fraudulently helped their children gain admission to universities.

Pop announced that Martha Plimpton will guest star on “Flack,” which was recently renewed for a second season. Sam Neil and Daniel Dae Kim will also appear in season two.

Viceland has set the premiere date for the serialized true crime show “The Devil You Know” for Aug. 27. The five-part series follows satanist John Lawson after two bodies turn up in his house. The docu-series “Terror” will also premiere on Aug. 27. The series explores global terrorist organizations such as Al Qaeda, Boko Haram, Al Shabaab, the Taliban and Isis.

‘Vikings’ Creator Michael Hirst Developing Drama ‘Charlemagne’ For Quibi
Quibi has announced its latest drama project. The short-form video platform, founded by Jeffrey Katzenberg and Meg Whitman, has put into development Charlemagne, a drama based on the wild life of the Roman emperor, from Vikings, Camelot and The Tudors creator Michael Hirst.

Written by Hirst, Charlemagne is based on the wild life of Charlemagne, emperor of the Romans, who united Eastern and Western Europe amidst navigating a salacious, complicated personal life.

Hirst is currently executive producing the sixth and final season of History’s Vikings, which will premiere later this year. Deadline previously reported Hirst and studio MGM Television have been in talks with History about extending the Vikings franchise with a new follow-up series which would continue the Vikings saga. Hirst also has teamed with Sherlock producer Hartswood Films and Wild Bunch TV to adapt Boris Pasternak’s classic novel Doctor Zhivago for TV as an eight-part series.

UCLA alumnus Dustin Lance Black, the Oscar-winning "Milk" screenwriter, will be honored with UCLA's Distinguished Achievement in Screenwriting Award on June 10 at UCLA's Freud Playhouse.

The award will be presented to Black, a 1996 honors graduate of UCLA's School of Theater, Film and Television, during UCLA's Screenwriters Showcase, staged readings of student screenplays and teleplays selected by a jury of industry professionals in an annual competition.

The showcase is part of UCLA Festival 2009: New Creative Work, a nine-day celebration of the newest work by students from the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television, which takes place at UCLA and other sites June 5-13.

The event will be hosted by screenwriter and UCLA alumnus Mike Werb, whose credits include "The Mask," "Face/Off" and "Lara Croft: Tomb Raider."
