The 1990 television adaptation of Stephen King's horror novel "It" may be best known for Tim Curry's performance as Pennywise, who made an entire generation seriously terrified of clowns, but it would be nothing without the heart and soul of the Loser's Club. In the 1950s, a group of misfit kids growing up in Derry, Maine are brought together, partially because they don't belong anywhere else, but also because they happen to be targeted by the malevolent force that haunts their town, stealing and murdering its local children. Together, they have to face off against Pennywise to stop the killing once and for all. That's what they think, anyway. But despite defeating Pennywise as children, they're forced to return to Derry as adults and once again confront the terrors of their youth.
As a result of this, "It" has an interesting casting dilemma of finding not only seven...

Guillaume Brac's film All Hands on Deck is exclusively showing on Mubi in most countries in the series The New Auteurs, as well as the retrospective Summer Light: Films by Guillaume Brac.Just over a year ago, the director of the Cnsad (Conservatoire National Supérieur d’Art Dramatique—the Higher National Conservatoire for Dramatic Art), Claire Lasne-Darcueil, asked me to write a feature-length fiction film for a dozen young actors from the class of 2020. With one proviso: I had to shoot between summer and autumn 2019, so that the film would be finished by the time they graduated.I immediately saw this as an opportunity to paint the fictional portrait of a generation, just like Pascale Ferran did twenty-five years ago with L’âge des possibles, written for a class at the Théâtre National de Strasbourg. Or the filmmakers of two collections, Tous les garçons et les filles de leur âge and Les années lycée,...

Delivering familiar bromides with fresh brio, Green Book is an altogether pleasant and very entertaining trip back in time that is more relevant than ever. More than anything else in the career of director Peter Farrelly, it reminds me of Outside Providence (1999), a warm and affectionate comedy-drama about a young working-class man from Rhode Island who gets sent to a private academy for his senior year of high school. Set in the 1970s, it was based on a novel by Peter Farrelly, who cowrote the screenplay and produced with his brother Bobby Farrelly and Michael Corrente, who directed. Outside Providence is a minor work but a funny, likable effort. The Farrelly Brothers had cleaned up with broad, outrageous comedies earlier in the decade --...

Masturbation is still a bit of a taboo subject in our society, but that didn't stop one sex-toy store from marking May as National Masturbation Month in the mid-90s. No joke.
As the month of May comes to an end, HuffPost Entertainment would like to send it off with a mash-up dedicated to the self-loving deed: "Masturbation In Film." Cinema hasn't shied away from masturbation, whether it's the comedic ("Fast Times At Ridgemont High"), the tragic ("Black Swan") or the just plain weird ("Grandma's Boy"). While the mashup does not include all masturbation scenes, we tried to pay tribute to a handful of the best.

Oh, how the mighty fall.
This week on Criminal Minds we saw an all-around collapse of authority. First, the Colonel's devious ways were uncovered, then Strauss' dirty little secret was revealed. Coming off of a few week break, this episode came out swinging.
One of the biggest pieces of reader feedback this season has been your desire to not know who the UnSub is right away, but you can't say that "Self-Fulfilling Prophecy" didn't keep you on your toes. The is-he-a-victim-or-the-aggressor? storyline that swirled around Josh for most of the episode was constantly changing, and it required some careful following along in order to keep up. Further, the introduction of the young cadet who killed himself's father, and then the killing of him off, was an interesting twist.
The message that the writers were sending with this episode - that of corruption and secrecy at upper levels of military authority...

When his partner is killed by a masked gunman four years later, Marty must team up with hothead homicide detective Dan Sullivan to investigate a string of brutal cop murders and hunt down the cop killer. David O. Russell is sure having fun discussing what projects he could direct post-Oscar nominated for The Fighter, but he doesn’t seem all that desperate to actually get anything in front of camera’s. He’s become something of the master of first dates, a guy who initially shows interest in a long commitment only to rarely call back and he certainly never takes his date home.
Vulture reports that O. Russell has become interested in directing yet another project, this time a biopic of long-time former Providence, Rhode Island mayor Buddy Cianci who held office for a whopping 21 years in two lengthy separate terms. During that time he took down mobsters, revived the ‘dying’ Providence but went out on a conterversial note in 2002 when he was imprisoned for five years on rackeeting charges.

In 1996, Wes Anderson directed a small, little seen moved called Bottle Rocket that he co-wrote with his best friend Owen Wilson, who also starred in the film with his brother, Luke. Based on a short film of the same name that was a huge success at Sundance, the feature version of Bottle Rocket would tank commercially before being saved from obscurity by a legions of film critics and a small but clever audience that appreciated great storytelling and a unique voice, not to mention an MTV Movie Award to Anderson for Best New Filmmaker, maybe the last award the network has given a deserving filmmaker. Martin Scorsese even called Bottle Rocket one of the ten best films of the 90s. The success of Bottle Rocket had as much to do with Owen Wilson as it did Wes Anderson: In his character, Dignon, Wilson created this remarkable blend of deadpan and enthusiasm,...

The sibling directors behind Dumb & Dumber talk to Chris Lee about living up to the comedy standard they set, "sharting" and why Sean Penn should be a Stooge.
For their latest film, Hall Pass, directors Bobby and Peter Farrelly cast Wedding Crashers' star Owen Wilson and Saturday Night Live cast member Jason Sudeikis as two horny doofuses from suburban Rhode Island whose long-suffering wives grant them a "week off from marriage."

The new raunch comedy, in theaters Friday, gets its laughs from a certain kind of situational humor: explosive diarrhea, premature ejaculation, prison rape, and public masturbation. In one scene, for example, a character defecates in a golf course sand trap after eating a pot brownie-it's that kind of a movie. The Farrelly brothers, the gross-out auteurs responsible for Dumb & Dumber and There's Something About Mary, are clearly back...

The Farrelly Brothers’ The Three Stooges may have found a permanent home. The project has switched studios several times over the last decade. It was first at Columbia Pictures, then it went to Warner Bros., and finally MGM where it was delayed along with several other projects. Deadline Hollywood reports that MGM’s bankruptcy plan was approved today, and that opened to the door for Twentieth Century Fox to grab the film.
Bobby and Peter Farrelly are still directing the script written by Mike Cerrone (Outside Providence, Me, Myself and Irene), but no cast has been secured. Jim Carrey recently announced that he’s out (here), and Sean Penn has been in and out of the project for a while. It was then the financial problems at MGM occurred, and the film was delayed. You may recognize Maryland-born actor Shawn Hatosy for his roles in The Cooler, Outside Providence and Alpha Dog but you would probably have a hard time pegging him to Dexter. Not because you haven't seen Showtime's serial killer drama series, but because Hatosy was completely unrecognizable as Boyd Fowler, an offbeat sociopath who collects roadkill for the Department of Sanitation by day, and tortures, electrocutes and disposes of young women by night.

Now that The Twilight Saga has reinvigorated his career, Peter Facinelli, also known as Dr. Carlisle Cullen, is stretching his cinematic reach and writing his own gigs. Variety reports that the actor has penned a new film called Loosies, which will put him alongside the likes of Michael Madsen and Vincent Gallo. Michael Corrente (Outside Providence) will direct when production kicks off next month.
Facinelli will star as "a successful pickpocket living the outlaw lifestyle until confronted with an old one-night stand who tells him that she's pregnant with his child." If the IMDb cast list is right, it looks like the one-night stand could be played by his real-life wife Jennie Garth. As for Madsen and Gallo, there's no word on what sort of characters they'll play, but considering the subject matter, I think it's fair to say that they're a part of the pickpocket's "outlaw lifestyle."

Berklee film scoring professor and composer Sheldon Mirowitz (Outside Providence, Missing in America) says,
"There are two parts to creating. One is exploring and the other is culling. If you confuse them, then you won't get anywhere. Mick Goodrick once said to me, 'When you swim, there is stroking and then there's gliding. And if you only stroke you won't be able to swim, because you won't get anywhere. You need to be able to glide in between strokes.' There's a period of time when you are capturing the things floating around through you, and you have to be very careful not to be judgmental at that point. There is also the point when you need to be critical and throw things out, but if you go there at the wrong point in the process you'll simply muck it up."
Here is a great video of Mirowitz talking to...
