Makin' It

Toni English (a/k/a Kelly Holland) made this documentary-style feature for Vivid's Wave Video subsidiary, showing us rather convincingly how two newbie Adult Cinema actors break into the business. It begins humorously with Wayne Wright and his pal watching porn, with the familiar reaction of "I bet I could do that". The buddy bets $100 that Wayne can't and hands him the phone, making an appointment with Vivid Entertainment. The Vivid receptionist refers them to Jim South's Worldwide modeling agency, and we get to see two matter-of-fact meetings led by South to inform Wright and his female counterpart Mina Tran what's involved, ranging from doing print modeling work only all the way to acting in hardcore shoots. We even hear the pay rate (for men) in 1994, of a minimum $250 per day up to $800 per day for male stars -a day possibly comprising two scenes.

Soon the story content quietly disappears and we merely watch porn being shot. The scenes are hot, even merging into gonzo when Marc Wallice services Kaitlyn Ashley (even donning a condom for anal) and Tricia Yen together. Isis Nile services Sean Michaels off-camera, followed by them doing it "for real" (shooting) with Tricia Yen as a threesome, side by side with the newbies pair Wayne and Mina humping. Both Wayne and Mina eked out minor careers as Adult performers.

It adds up to an unusual, informative little movie, not necessarily accurate but an educational piece looking at the industry without the rah-rah approach that dooms most behind-the-scenes projects right through to today when a typical example would be the self-serving "We Like Girls" project by pornographer Bree Mills.
