Sofia Carson is becoming a Netflix star. After being brilliant in 2024's thriller, Carry-On, she will now turn lead in a new Netflix movie called The Life List. The story revolves around a woman who is set on a journey by her mother to re-access her life. The twist is that Carson's character (Alex Rose) is given a new DVD each time she goes about completing tasks on her bucket list.
Mind you, at least some of the bucket list was created when Alex was a child, so some of what she has to do might be something she would never do as an adult. The list includes participating in an open mic night, playing basketball in a one-on-one game, and teaching at a women's shelter. The truth is that the film is not a series of episodes of Alex working her way down the list.

Peaky Blinders hopes to continue living long in the memories of fans thanks to its anticipated big-screen adaptation, The Immortal Man. However, the hit show's creator insists there's more to come from his popular franchise once the movie debuts.
Speaking with Paris Match (via Screen Rant), Peaky Blinders' brainchild Stephen Knight teased what fans can expect beyond The Immortal Man. According to Knight, he has an idea for a "new generation" sequel series that will be set after the upcoming film. Additionally, he suggested he could expand the Peaky Blinders franchise beyond upcoming screen projects. "We are going to focus on the new generation in a series that will take place after the Second World War. And then, who knows? Why not a clothing line?" Knight said. These comments elaborate on teases he made last year insisting the upcoming film wouldn't be the end of the Peaky Blinders franchise.

Cillian Murphy's time in Peaky Blinders might be coming to a close with the upcoming movie, but the franchise will reportedly live on in a brand-new spin-off show. Creator Steven Knight introduced audiences to Tommy Shelby back in 2013. Set just after the first World War, Peaky Blinders saw Tommy return to Birmingham to lead the titular gang, along with his brother Arthur Shelby (Paul Anderson), and Aunt Polly Gray (Helen McCrory). The hit series came to an end in 2022 after Season 6, and Knight is bringing Shelby's story to a close with the upcoming Netflix film. But the Peaky Blinders conquest won't stop there, as Knight has unveiled plans for the franchise to live on beyond Tommy Shelby.

The cinematic landscape is not just for the sake of ‘entertainment’ and ‘merriment’ alone, for oftentimes it leaves the audiences with traces of unanswered questions, tickling their brain chemistry in the right way. While in 2023, movies like Barbie posed some very vital yet harsh questions about society and women, movies like Oppenheimer made viewers question the drawbacks of progress in the scientific world and the integrity of human morality.
On the other hand, in the same year, we had a French legal drama directed by Justine Triet which sparked the most curiosity among viewers. Called The Anatomy of a Fall, the film captivated audiences at the 76th Cannes Film Festival, drawing viewers into a complex web of emotional tension, courtroom intrigue, and personal revelations.

Roman Polanski was cleared of defamation charges in France in a case tied to a rape allegation brought by the British actress Charlotte Lewis.
As The New York Times reports, Lewis accused Polanski of raping her in 1983, when she was 16, during a casting session for the film Pirates at his home in Paris (Lewis later appeared in the film). In a 2019 interview with the French magazine Paris Match, Polanski denied Lewis’ allegation, calling it an “odious lie”; he also brought up an old 1999 tabloid interview in which Lewis spoke positively about him.

A French court has dismissed charges against French-Polish filmmaker Roman Polanski that he defamed UK actor Charlotte Lewis after she accused him of sexually assaulting her as a teenager.
Lewis told a Paris court in March that she had been subjected to a “smear campaign” after speaking up about alleged sexual abuse by Polanski in the 1980.
The actor originally made her allegations in a press conference in Cannes in 2010, saying Polanski had taken advantage of her in the worst possible way during a casting meeting in Paris in 1983 when she was 16 years old. She would later go on to star in his 1986 film Pirates.
Polanski denied the accusations in an interview in French celebrity magazine Paris Match in 2019, calling them a “heinous lie.”
He also cited a 1999 News of the World interview in which Lewis was quoted as saying that she desired the director more than he had her.

A French court has acquitted filmmaker Roman Polanski of defamation charges brought by British actor Charlotte Lewis, who’d claimed that he raped her when she was a child, the New York Times has reported.
Lewis, now 56, had accused the now 90-year-old filmmaker of sexually assaulting her when she was 16, during a casting session at his Paris home. The French court was not ruling on that accusation. Instead, it was dealing with a 2019 interview with French magazine Paris Match in which Polanski had dismissed Lewis’ accusation of being a “heinous lie.” The court ruled on whether Polanski had overstepped the bounds of free speech by dismissing her account of the alleged events.
The trial kicked off in March, when the Franco-Polish filmmaker was sued by Lewis, who claimed he defamed her in the interview. Lewis first came forward with her allegations against Polanski in 2010.

As a #MeToo wave looked to rock the 77th Cannes Film Festival with rumors swirling that filmmakers with films at the event would be tagged, Thierry Frémaux emphasized his event isn’t about polemics, rather the picture that’s on the screen. If there are controversies during Cannes “we try to avoid them” he said today during an afternoon presser.
“Last year, as you know, we had a few polemics, and we realized it, and so this year we decided to host a festival without polemics to make sure that the main interest for us all to be here is cinema,” Frémaux said. “So if there are other polemics, it doesn’t concern us.”
“It’s about the movies and whether they deserve or not, in aesthetic or artistic terms, to be there,” Frémaux said. “There is no ideology guiding the selection committee.”

Born in Paris in 1947 to a well-to-do family, Mitterrand was the nephew of President François Mitterrand.
His many activities across half a century included teacher, arthouse cinema owner, cinema and culture commentator, TV presenter, producer and documentary-maker.
He first gained notoriety on France’s cultural scene as the owner of the bohemian arthouse cinema L’Olympic in Paris’ then down-at-heel 14th arrondissement.
After a brief time as a geography and history teacher, he acquired the theater in 1971 at the age of 22 with the help of a loan from the father of one of his former pupils.
It took on a folkloric status for its mixed clientele of locals, cinephiles, neighborhood hoodlums, drag queens and the occasional film star and auteur director of the time.

Franco-Polish filmmaker Roman Polanski is on trial in Paris today (March 5) to face allegations that he defamed British actress Charlotte Lewis, who accused him of sexual abuse.
The 90-year-old director currently resides in Paris, but is not due to appear in court according to his lawyers. Lewis, who starred in the director’s 1986 film Pirates, claimed in May 2010 that Polanski had sexually assaulted her during an audition at his Paris home in 1983 when she was just 16 years old.
In December of 2019, Polanski refuted her accusations as an “odious lie” in an interview with Paris Match magazine and cited inconsistencies in Lewis’ account of the events.

Roman Polanski will be tried in Paris today over allegations that he defamed British actor Charlotte Lewis.
Lewis brought the claim against the 90-year-old filmmaker, claiming he defamed her by calling her sexual assault allegations against him a “heinous lie” in a 2019 interview with Paris Match magazine. Polanski is not due to appear in court.
In 2010, Lewis accused Polanski of sexually assaulting her “in the worst possible way” in 1983 when she was in Paris for a casting appointment, aged 16. She later appeared in Polanski’s 1986 film Pirates. Polanski denied the allegations in the 2019 Paris Match interview and is said to have referenced a quote attributed to Lewis from a 1999 interview with the now-defunct outlet News of the World, in which she allegedly remarked: “I wanted to be his mistress (…) I probably desired him more than he did me.”
Lewis disputed the quote’s accuracy in 2010 and subsequently filed the suit.

A defamation trial against controversial director Roman Polanski is underway in Paris.
The 90-year-old Franco-Polish filmmaker is being sued by British actor Charlotte Lewis, who is claiming he defamed her by calling her sexual assault allegations against him a “heinous lie” in a 2019 interview with Paris Match magazine.
Lewis first came forward with her allegations against Polanski in 2010, alleging that the director had sexually assaulted her in Paris in 1983, when she was 16 years old. Lewis said she had traveled to Paris for a casting call, and she later appeared in Polanski’s 1986 movie “Pirates.”
Polanski has been accused of sexual assault by several women, beginning in 1977 when he was arrested for allegedly assaulting 13-year-old Samantha Gailey. He entered a plea bargain and plead guilty to one charge of unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor, later fleeing the U.S. and continuing his career in Europe. He remains a fugitive from the U.

Alain Delon has been placed under legal protection amid concerns about the 88-year-old acting icon’s health and well-being as his children squabble over his medical and living arrangements.
French media reported on Monday that a guardianship judge made the decision this week.
The legal protection order will not impact Delon’s day to day life but prevents him from selling a major asset and will see a third-party representative assist the actor in choosing suitable medical treatment and doctors.
The legal protection order comes amid a public spat between Delon’s oldest son Anthony, by French model Francine Canovas, and daughter and son Anouchka and Alain-Fabien, by Dutch model and TV presenter Rosalie van Breemen.

Actress, director and writer Karine Silla has spoken out in defense of former partner Gérard Depardieu, with whom she has a 31-year-old daughter.
The actor, who was indicted for rape in 2021, has been at the heart of a media storm in France in recent weeks following the broadcast of a France Télévisions documentary probing multiple historic accusations of sexual misconduct against the actor.
Silla, who is the sister of Luc Besson’s wife Virginie Besson-Silla and is now married to actor Vincent Perez, told celebrity magazine Paris Match that she felt compelled to break her silence over the treatment of Depardieu.
“I thought long and hard before speaking out because, as we know, it is difficult for a surgeon to operate on his own child or for a judge to conduct a fair trial if the accused is a member of his family,” she said.

The health and wellbeing of French acting star Alain Delon is in the spotlight in France amid a bitter family feud between his three living children over the veteran star’s medical regime and control of his assets.
Jean-Cédric Gaux, public prosecutor in the Loire Valley town of Montargis, close to the village of Douchy where Delon resides in a 19th century chateau, announced last week that he had appointed an authorized doctor to assess the health of the 88-year-old actor.

The European Commission has opened a formal investigation for possibly jumping the gun in Vivendi’s pending acquisition of Lagardère, the French media, publishing and travel retail conglomerate.
Vivendi, which is owned by conservative billionaire Vincent Bolloré and is the parent company of pay TV giant Canal+ Group, has a 57.35% stake in Lagardere. The Paris-headquartered company launched an Opa to acquire the remaining stake in Lagardere in 2022. After raising anti-trust concerns, the European Commission eventually gave its support for the acquisition of Lagardere on June 9 on the condition that Vivendi sells its publishing group Editis, as well as its stake in Gala magazine. Vivendi said both deals will be completed by October.
The launch of the E.C. investigation follows the shocking appointment of a new editor-in-chief Geoffroy Lejeune, well known for his far-right views, at Le Journal du Dimanche, a popular mainstream weekly newspaper owned by Lagardere Group. Although...

The European Commission has given the greenlight for French conglom Vivendi’s acquisition of the Lagardère Group.
The acquisition will make the Paris-based group one of the biggest media and entertainment groups in Europe, on a par with Germany giant Bertelsmann.
Key Lagardère assets include the Hachette publishing group, prestigious weekly magazine Paris Match, the radio station Europe 1 and newspaper kiosk chain Relay.
The approval is contingent on the conglom honoring commitments to sell 100% of its share capital in French publishing house Editis as well as the full sale of celebrity magazine Gala, which currently published under the umbrella of Vivendi’s Prisma Group.
In its press release, Vivendi recalled it had entered into a put option agreement for Editis with Czech mogul Daniel Kretinsky’s International Media Invest on April 23 2023, and noted there was strong interest in Gala too.

In the prelude to the big Cannes opener, the Johnny Depp-starring “Jeanne du Barry,” a journalist who was spat on by the film’s director has said that the (female) filmmaker is “outspokenly anti-#MeToo.” Maïwenn admitted last week to assaulting the journalist.
“She’s outspokenly anti-#MeToo and she made a gesture to please her world, and that’s why she bragged about it on TV,” stated Edwy Plenel when speaking to Variety in his first interview since the incident. “We could see a sort of pride that echoed that world.”
Planel was referring to Maïwenn’s comments in Paris Match in 2020 saying that “It’s crazy how many stupidities they say these days! These women don’t like men, that’s clear, and they’re causing very serious collateral damage.” In that same interview she noted “When I hear women complaining that men are only interested in their bottom,...

Gisèle Galante recalls a recent evening in which she and her husband first watched Dodge City, the 1939 Michael Curtiz-directed western starring Errol Flynn and Olivia de Havilland. As de Havilland’s daughter, born 17 years after that film’s premiere, Galante was struck equally by her mother’s beauty and her performance: “I had never seen it before, but she was so, so pretty,” she tells The Hollywood Reporter. “And even though it wasn’t what you would call a meaty role, she was excellent. There’s still so much for me to discover, more of my mother’s films that I have not seen.”
For many classic-film fans, de Havilland’s death in July 2020 at the age of 104 signified the end of an era, the passing of perhaps the last great star of Hollywood’s golden years. Galante notes that she’s had those fans in mind while planning...

OpinionThe box office fate of the last few films written by Udaykrishna has more than made it clear that the audience is no longer tickled pink by such regressive, formulaic narratives.Even as a one-liner, Christopher, directed by B Unnikrishnan and written by Udaykrishna, sounds like a fan service superstar vehicle. Mammootty plays a vigilante cop who shoots down rapists in encounters. Considering that writer Udaykrishna (and director B Unnikrishnan) has only crafted hypermasculine narratives featuring men playing the proverbial saviour to women, the execution of the film was on predictable lines – long and mid shots of the stoic hero strutting around the screen in slow-mo, women desperately looking up to him, one-dimensional antagonists, and other shenanigans to glorify the fan vehicle. As usual, despite there being four women actively occupying screen space, they were reduced to mere props. That includes Sneha who plays Home Secretary, Aishwarya Lakshmy as an investigative lawyer,...

The decade of the 90s was absolutely bursting with romantic comedies. Between Meg Ryan in films like Sleepless in Seattle, You've Got Mail, and French Kiss and Julia Roberts in my Best Friend's Wedding, Runaway Bride, and Notting Hill, the two leading ladies pretty much cornered the market on the genre. But one role that Ryan took on was a complete departure for her. In the midst of her run of rom-coms, Ryan played an alcoholic mother of two young girls in the 1994 family drama film, When a Man Loves a Woman, opposite Andy García. There is very little romance and absolutely no comedy in this one. The role was a powerful one that details the life of an upper-middle-class woman living in San Francisco who starts to struggle with the vicissitudes of everyday life and parenting small children and turns to alcohol to deal with her anxieties. Ryan received...

Owen Roizman, the cinematographer who shot some of the most notable films of the 1970s New Hollywood era, has died. The Hollywood Reporter confirms the news that the Oscar-nominated director of photography, who worked often with William Friedkin, Lawrence Kasdan, and Sydney Pollack, passed away in his home in Encino on Friday night, at the age of 86.
Roizman shot over 30 films and music videos across his decades-long career, including some of the most acclaimed cultural touchstones of the '70s and '80s. Friedkin's "The French Connection," a movie that famously includes one of cinema's most exhilarating car chase sequences, was only the second film Roizman ever worked on as a cinematographer.
In an interview with American Cinematographer, the artist once explained that he undercranked the camera for the famous (and infamous) chase scene, using only 18 to 20 frames per second instead of the typical 24 in order to give the effect of high speed.

When in a romantic relationship, it’s never a good time to break up, nor to be the one getting dumped. The hilarious cold open of director Jason Orley’s rom-com “I Want You Back” begins with much promise, highlighting the indignities of the separate but equally humiliating fracturing of our two protagonists’ long-term loves. And while the premise of these two broken-hearted strangers finding each other and hatching a foolhardy scheme to win back their exes is quick to ramp up, the midsection plateaus when it should percolate with the pair’s plan taking form, or rather not quite manifesting correctly. Still, despite some pacing issues and predictable plotlines, the film keeps us wholeheartedly engaged with well-drawn, well-performed characters, grounded shenanigans and sweet, sentimental commentary on heartache.

Vivendi, the parent company of Canal Plus Group, is set to acquire a 17.5% stake in Lagardere, the French media, publishing and travel retail conglomerate, from Amber Capital in the next few days.
Vivendi will own 45.1% of the Lagardère capital following the acquisition of 24,685,108 shares at a price of €24.10 ($27.27) per share. The company said the transaction will not imply any cash transfers from either party since Amber Capital will keep the funds received as cash collateral from Vivendi.
If approved by regulatory authorities, the transaction will place Vivendi above the 30% share capital and voting right threshold in Lagardere. As such, Vivendi said it will make a takeover bid at the same price, €24.10 per share, for the remaining stake in Lagardère on Feb. 2022. Other shareholders in Lagardere include Arnaud Lagardere, as well as Qatar Holding and Financière Agache, the holding of Lvmh president Bernard Arnault.

Vivendi, the parent company of Canal Plus and Universal Music Group (Umg), is planning to acquire an additional 17.93% stake in Lagardere, the French media, publishing and travel retail conglomerate, from its leading shareholder Amber Capital.
The move comes as Vivendi is getting ready to list Umg, its biggest money-making asset and the world’s largest music company, at the Amsterdam stock exchange on Sept. 21.
Vivendi first entered into Lagardere’s capital with a 10.6% stake in April 2020, when the company’s president Arnaud Lagardère, who inherited the illustrious banner from his father, Jean-Luc Lagardère, clashed with Amber Capital and was threatened to be pushed aside.
With Amber Capital’s stake, Vivendi will own 45.1% of Lagardere’s share capital and 36.1% of the voting rights. Amber Capital has accepted Vivendi’s offer to pay €24.10 ($28.3) per share for its 25,305,448 shares.

The estate of Phife Dawg has released a new posthumous track and music video, “French Kiss Trois,” featuring Redman and Illa J (the younger brother of the late J Dilla).
“French Kiss Trois” — as one might expect — is a follow-up to “French Kiss Deux,” another posthumous Phife cut that was released in May, produced by Potatohead People and also featured Illa J. “Trois” came about after Redman heard “Deux” and knew he wanted to hop on the track himself.
Both versions of “French Kiss” pay homage to the city of Montreal,...

With the To All the Boys series set to wrap up this week, it’s time to talk about what the next big Netflix young adult romance adaptation could be—because we now know it’s not going to be The Summer I Turned Pretty. The streamer has been leaning much more heavily into the teen romance genre in recent years, which means some iconic YA romance getting screen adaptations. On that note, it’s recently come to my attention that Anna and the French Kiss, the debut novel from author Stephanie Perkins that follows an American teen to Paris for her senior year of high school, is 20 years old. It’s a foundational text of the genre, and it’s long past time it gets the screen treatment. Now that mainstream content creators are recognizing the power of romance as a genre, where is the Anna and the French...
