The International Press Academy has announced the winners of the 16th Annual Satellite Awards and Alexander Payne's "The Descendants" and Nicolas Winding Refn's "Drive" triumphed!

"Drive" took home the most wins, four total, including Ryan Gosling for Best Actor, Albert Brooks for Best Supporting Actor, Nicholas Winding Refn for Best Director, and the film also won Best Editing.

But "The Descendants" received the big honor of the night, the Best Picture award, and the film also won Best Adapted Screenplay.

It's interesting that the Ipa honored Gosling for Best Actor and Viola Davis for Best Actress -- both are not considered Oscar frontrunners, but gave the performances of their lives nonetheless.

The 16th Annual Satellite Awards. were held Sunday, Dec. 18, 2011, in the Rodeo Ballroom of The Beverly Hills Hotel, Beverly Hills, Calif.

The International Press Academy has announced the nominees of the 16th Annual Satellite Awards. "Drive" by Nicholas Winding Refn and Steven Spielberg's "War Horse" led the pack with eight nominations each including Best Picture.

Winners will be announced on Sunday, Dec, 18th in Beverly Hills, California.

This year’s line-up for the 68th Venice Film Festival, taking place between 31st August and 10th September, has been announced by the festival’s official website, and as expected, it’s more than a little bit fantastic, with a brilliant line-up of films set to screen in Italy.

Heading the jury this year will be director Darren Aronofsky, the BBC reported back in April, who won the festival’s top prize, the Golden Lion, back in 2008 for The Wrestler.

The list, as you can imagine, is a bit of a long one, so I’ve highlighted some of the hottest tipped to look out for beneath. Playing in competition will be:

Hot on the heels of the release of a massive batch of films [1] that will appear in the Toronto Film Festival, we've got the main lineup for the 68th Venice Film Festival, which runs from August 31 to September 10. We knew that George Clooney's The Ides of March would open the fest (the trailer premiered last night and you can see it here [2]) and this list confirms quite a few films that we imagined would be playing Venice. Our very much anticipated spy thriller Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy from Let the Right One In director Tomas Alfredson is on the list, as is Roman Polanski's tense closed-room drama Carnage, starring Kate Winslet, Jodie Foster, John C. Reilly and Christoph Waltz. And there is Alps, the second film from polarizing Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos, whose film Dogtooth shocked, entertained and angered festival audiences in 2009. The line-up for the 2011 Venice Film Festival was unveiled a little earlier today and this year’s edition looks particularly stacked on the English-language side of things with a large number of dramatic outputs from the U.K. and U.S.

Dozens and dozens of high-intrigue fare are set to be premiering over the two week event which kicks off proceedings on August 31st with the George Clooney directed political thriller The Ides of March as an in-competition film. A trailer was released last night and you can see it Here.

Hollywoodnews.com: Titles scheduled to screen at the 68tht Annual Venice Film Festival reached the Web this afternoon, and are sure to send film geeks (and Oscar trackers) into a frenzy.

David Cronenberg‘s “A Dangerous Method” and Roman Polanski’s “Carnage” are two of the festival’s biggest gets, with each boasting ensembles that include the likes of Jodie Foster, Viggo Mortensen, Kate Winslet, Michael Fassbender, Keira Knightley, Christoph Waltz and John C. Reilly.

But that’s just the tip of the iceberg, so to speak. U.S. director Todd Solondz will compete with “Dark Horse,” starring Mia Farrow, Farrow, Christopher Walken and Selma Blair. While other Hollywood Oscar contenders are in play, from Steven Soderbergh’s “Contagion” and “Haywire” to Steven Spielberg’s “War Horse.”

On the international front, Aleksandr Sokurov’s highly anticipated “Faust” will screen, as will Philippe Garrel’s “Un ete brulant.

Georgia

Analysis: A timely parable on war, or Hollywood propaganda filmmaking at its worst? Wherever it goes, especially in Europe and the former Soviet states, "Georgia" will cause a lot of talk and controversy as the incidents depicted are still so fresh in many's minds. Like all topics of the sort, it'll also have its strong supporters and detractors having opinions on the film long before a frame of footage is screened anywhere.

Shot on-location in Tbilisi, the project also marks a potential return to form for Finnish director Renny Harlin. Given the right material the skilled action director delivered three...
