Back in 1986, director Jim Wynorski brought us the cult classic Chopping Mall (watch it Here, check out our Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? episode on the film Here), which was about the robots that have been tasked with serving as the security guards in a shopping mall going on a killing spree. The original title for that movie was Killbots, and a while back it was announced that Wynorski was going to be directing a new movie called Killbots for Full Moon. It would have nothing to do with Chopping Mall, it was just going to be using that discarded original title. Well, the title plans changed along the way. The Wynorski / Full Moon project is now called Murderbot – and you can watch the trailer in the embed above!

Hello again, everyone! We have a brand new assortment of horror and sci-fi Blu-ray & DVD releases coming out this week, and here’s the lowdown on what to expect. In terms of new films, Willy’s Wonderland is headed home on both Blu and DVD, the new William Friedkin doc, Leap of Faith, is being released on Blu-ray and one of my favorite films I saw last year, I Blame Society, is getting a DVD release as well.
As far as older titles go, the Warner Archive Collection is showing some love to Doctor X this week, Troma is resurrecting The Children with a brand new Blu, and Full Moon has remastered Shrunken Heads as well. No one sets out to make a cult movie. Most filmmakers aspire to commercial heights even if they only have the budgets for a B-movie. They see films like Blair Witch realign box office accounting and apply all kinds of quantum physics to mimic the exponential multiplication. Very few achieve it, and the ones which do usually do it by accident, and certainly not with serious intent. Aliens, Clowns & Geeks is not afraid to be ridiculous. It joins the ranks as such brave films as Attack of the Killer Tomatoes, Killer Klowns From Outer Space, and Frankenhooker.
It is also so much more than these films, dripping with artistry, and yet considerably less, with masturbating aliens, pussy ping pong, and sphincter-pinching obelisks. Richard Elfman’s sci-fi comedy has an abundance of experimental fun and a happily reckless disregard for taste. It owes as much to Frank Zappa as it does to Frank Capra,...

While Halloween is certainly all about kids having fun, that doesn’t mean adults can’t enjoy themselves as well. And what better way to have some fun this October than by making some festive cocktails and spirits that are sure to liven up any party and help you get into a more macabre-minded mood all month long? Even if you’re not an accomplished bartender, these ten drink recipes are easy enough for anyone, and will surely help raise your spirits throughout the Halloween season.

You think you’ve seen one-of-a-kind movies? Banana oil! Forbidden Zone, there’s nothing like it.
The world of motion pictures is loaded with brilliant films and original visions, but few are without precedent. Forbidden Zone is a one of a kind movie that is both highly intelligent and unafraid to be broadly stupid. It mixes the most nightmarish elements of hundreds of film moments, unintentionally of course, with some of the most emotionally stirring music ever to prop up celluloid. If it weren’t for the snatches of dialogue, it might be considered the greatest prog rock opera.
Forbidden Zone is a work of pure originality. It is a fever dream from the mind of a musical interloper that has no peer. Characterizations mean nothing in Forbidden Zone. Neither does storyline or continuity. The basic laws of physics don’t apply so why should the rules of cinema?...

We recently reported that the Mistress of the Dark is returning soon to host horror flicks in Hulu’s 13 Nights of Elvira. Now you can get a taste of the humor to come, as Hulu and Brainstorm Media have provided us with a clip in which Elvira offers witty remarks on 1985’s Trancers and Oscar winner Helen Hunt before imagining what she would say upon winning an Academy Award.
Cassandra Peterson stars as the legendary horror hostess on Hulu’s 13 Nights of Elvira, streaming exclusively on the site beginning October 19th and running through Halloween. Each night Elvira will introduce a fright film and offer occasional comedic commentary—a setup similar to her Movie Macabre performances. Here’s the official schedule:
Cannibal Women In The Avocado Jungle of Death (1989) Sunday, Oct. 19 Puppet Master (1989) Monday, Oct. 20 Demonic Toys (1992) Tuesday, Oct. 21 Hobgoblins (1988) Wednesday, Oct. 22 The Gingerdead Man (2005) Thursday, Oct. 23 Dollman (1991) Friday, Oct.

For as long as there are horror and sci-fi movies of, shall we say, questionable quality there will be...Elvira. The Mistress of the Dark returns to the small screen in a new Hulu series called 13 Nights of Elvira and this time, she'll be poking fun at a new crop of films with her usual flavor of humor.
The titles include Cannibal Women in the Avocado Jungle of Death, Puppet Master, Demonic Toys, Hobgoblins, The Gingerdead Man, Dollman, Trancers, Oblivion, Shrunken Heads, Hideous, Evil Bong, Seedpeople and Night of the Living Dead.

Hulu’s heart is on fire for Elvira. The Mistress of Dark is headed to the subscription-based and (perhaps soon-to-be slightly less) ad-supported “premium streaming TV destination” for a brand new series this Halloween season. 13 Nights of Elvira will feature Cassandra Peterson once again suited up in what very well may be the original stereotypical sexy girl’s Halloween costume to reprise her dual roles of Alistair Cooke and Roger Ebert for the B grade horror movie set. The program is a streaming iteration of Peterson’s cult classic Elvira’s Movie Macabre (which is also currently available on Hulu), and will feature pithy intros, and poignant, punny commentary from the self-proclaimed Personification of Instant Gratification. Elvira will playfully praise and skewer the following terrifically terrible flicks on the daily starting October 19: Cannibal Women In The Avocado Jungle of Death, Puppet Master, Demonic Toys, Hobgoblins, The Gingerdead Man, Dollman,...

Queen of Halloween, Elvira, Mistress of the Dark, is coming to Hulu for Halloween this year with 13 Nights of Elvira. (She's also doing live shows at Knotts Scary Farm.) As she did with Movie Macabre, she'll be hosting a run of B horror movies with her snappy takes, including Cannibal Women in the Avocado Jungle of Death, Evil Bong, Seed People, and Shrunken Heads, and she's ending it all with The Night of the Living Dead. The series starts on October 19 and ends on Halloween. Spooky!

If you grew up in the '80s, chances are you came across Elvira's original syndicated horror movie series Movie Macabre, in which the "Hostess with the Mostest" would present (and take the piss out of) various low budget horror flicks. Now Shock Till You Drop report that the lovely lady will return on October 19th to give her take on the likes of Cannibal Women in the Avocado Jungle of Death, Evil Bong, Seed People, Shrunken Heads, and finally on Halloween night, Night of the Living Dead. Give Elvira a follow on Twitter to stay abreast of all her news.

Full Moon Entertainment is the company behind such horror films as Puppet Master, Demonic Toys, Arcade, Shrunken Heads, Shadowzone, Evil Bong, Voodoo Academy, etc. This past year with the release of Puppet Master: Axis of Evil, Demonic Toys 2, and director John Lechago's Killjoy 3, Full Moon Entertainment has gotten back to what made them a success to begin with. With the recent announcement of Evil Bong 3-D, Full Moon Entertainment seems due for a resurrgence after years of struggling. So what does this all have to do with one Mr. John Lechago? Well you see, like Full Moon Entertainment, Mr. Lechago seems to have his career back on track like the company that he has worked for. Killjoy 3 cemented that Full Moon Entertainment is moving in the right direction and so it appears that Mr. Lechago is heading in the right direction as well. Killjoy 3 was...

It sounds kind of demented to say that I grew up on the movies produced by Full Moon Entertainment, but it’s the Gods’ honest truth. Whenever my parents made a trip to the video store, I always managed to persuaded them into renting something the company had released, whether it be a title from the “Trancers” series or a stand-alone endeavor along the lines of “Arcade” or “Shrunken Heads”. Charles Band’s “Puppet Master” series, however, was my favorite, despite the fact that everyone made fun of me for liking them so much. In fact, I’ve yet to meet anyone who adores the series as much as I do, though I’d like to think they’re out there somewhere, beneath the pale moonlight. But, I digress. The trailer for “Puppet Master: Axis of Evil” has arrived, and, from the looks of things, the newest apple hasn’t...

Whilst swirling stupidly in the nostalgic soup generated by the Full Moon’s announcement of a new “Puppet Master” film, I almost missed the life-affirming declaration that a new “Demonic Toys” movie was on the verge of release. However, I don’t know if my psyche or my social life could handle another low-budget gem featuring a plethora of pint-sized villains, but I’m certainly willing to give it a shot. I don’t know which otherworldly deity I’ve pleased over the past few years, but I need to figure it out post-haste. If I can get all of my sacrificial ducks in a row, perhaps I can conjure a “Shrunken Heads” sequel before the world comes to a Cusack-sized halt in 2012. In case you had a life in the early 90’s, “Demonic Toys” was the Peter Manoogian directed, David Goyer scripted horror flick which centered around the inhabitants of a haunted toy warehouse.

One of the real joys of Back Catalogue is getting to sift through movies I actually want to watch instead of whatever happens across my desk. This look at the older titles available through Vci Entertainment offered a little bit of everything. Mario Bava, made for TV fare, cult classics, exploitation and even documentary. Needless to say this was quite a viewing party.
Kiss Of The Tarantula was a definite first into the DVD player for me as I loves me some campy spider action. The film follows the mold of other movies like Willard, and Stanley, leaving out the supernatural element. Poor misunderstood, constantly picked on Susan isn't able to control spiders, she just raises them in the family mortuary. And when the locals (and her lecherous uncle) get a little too aggressive poor Susan pops a few of her eight legged friends in for visit.

If the psychedelic filmmaker Kenneth Anger somehow commandeered the controls at Walt Disney World’s Haunted Mansion, the result might look like last night’s Fever Ray show at Webster Hall in New York City. Fever Ray is the solo project of Swedish singer Karin Dreijer Andersson, who also happens to be one half of The Knife. (The other half is her brother, Olof.) These are artists who dwell in shadows, both figuratively and literally. Lyrically, Andersson makes Thom Yorke sound as literal as Neil Diamond (“You’ve got cucumbers on your eyes/Too much time spent on nothing/Waiting for a moment to arise”), and in performance she has perfected the art of keeping people guessing. She took the stage wearing an occult-themed costume built around a shrunken head. “She looks like a homeless high school mascot in a horror movie,” my wife said, and it was true. The...

I don't know what we'd do without Hal, our crazy little La limey correspondent.. great is his writing, humorous are his ways. (You should hear the weird-ass conversations we have on the phone). Anyways, after the screening of Forbidden Zone in color, Hal scored a sweet interview with the man himself! For the uninitiated, how would you describe the Forbidden Zone?
Forbidden Zone is essentially, on film, what we did onstage with the Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo. A mix of great forgotten musical classics, zany/original Danny Elfman music, plus my own particular brand of balls-out Absurdity. Forbidden Zone is also a satire on contemporary decadence and amorality, as the characters take very little responsibility for anything other than their own pleasures.

Writer/director/producer William Malone’s Parasomnia is a most unusual, visually enthralling horror film, so it’s fitting that the movie was the centerpiece of an unusual, visually enthralling event benefitting the American Cinematheque, which hosted the event at the Egyptian Theatre, and the Museum of Contemporary Art (Moca) in Los Angeles. The evening was a tribute to the work of the late Polish artist Zdzislaw Beksinski (pronounced Boo-shin-ski), whose paintings inspired much of Malone’s Parasomnia imagery; the film credits Beksinski with “conceptual art.”
Before Parasomnia (pictured) was screened, Richard Elfman (director of Forbidden Zone, Shrunken Heads and Modern Vampires) moderated a Q&A panel with Malone and fellow horrormakers Wes Craven, Mick Garris, Stuart Gordon and Tobe Hooper in a discussion of the influence of art on their filmmaking, followed by a slide show and discussion of Beksinski’s work. Fango caught up with the filmmakers afterward for some one-on-one insights.

Our second stab at the Oscars contains make-up effects and score (read part 1 here). The make-up effects, followed by the visual effects and technical awards, remain my favorite parts of the show; here you got to see your heroes: Rick Baker, Howard Berger, Chris Walas or Rob Bottin in the audience. Even the great Stan Winston could have been out there, back in the day. Though best known for his “visual effects” wins—he brought home an Oscar for best make-up in 1991 for Terminator 2: Judgment Day.
Here genre fans can rejoice, Greg Cannom brought home the gold, again, for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Cannom, a genre elder, worked alongside (just to name a few) Fincher, Coppola, Landis, Dante, Blatty, and Cohen creating all sorts of character and creature make-ups.

Tamara is just an average Japanese salaryman working for a pickle company except for the fact that he suffers from periodic memory loss, his vanished years earlier, and he happens to be a six-foot tall koala bear. His latest girlfriend is murdered and he becomes the prime suspect. Tamara joins forces with his boss (a white rabbit) and a friendly convenience store clerk (a frog) to prove his innocence.
Synapse Films will be treating us Americans to Executive Koala on November 18th (pre-order it here!), releasing it as part of what they are calling "The Minoru Kawasaki Collection". The other two in the collection, also being released on the 18th,...
