Meryl Streep, we miss you at the Academy Awards.
It’s been seven years since Streep was last nominated for an Oscar for her work in Steven Spielberg’s “The Post” in 2018.
Seven years without Streep is a long time.
Back then, she broke her own record as the most-nominated actress in Oscar history. Her best actress nod for playing Washington Post publisher Katherine Graham landed Streep her 21st Oscar nomination. Katharine Hepburn and Jack Nicholson are tied in second place with a dozen each.
Streep has won Oscars for “Kramer vs. Kramer” in 1979 (supporting actress), “Sophie’s Choice” in 1982 (best actress) and “The Iron Lady” in 2011 (best actress).
The last time she went missing from the Oscars for a long period of time was in the 1990s when she had a gap between her nominations for “Postcards From the Edge” in 1991 to her best actress nod in 1996 for “Bridges of Madison County.

He made his feature debut with National Lampoon's Animal House and has since starred in various roles across genres like comedies and dramas. Still, there’s one thing fans know about Kevin Bacon for the most part, and it is the numerous times his characters have died on screen. Sure, Bacon hasn’t gained the same reputation as Sean Bean, but instead, he stuns and captivates everyone before meeting his grisly end on screen.
During the Los Angeles press day for MaXXXine this past summer, Kevin Bacon sat down for an interview with CinemaBlend and revisited some of his most memorable death scenes. One particularly noteworthy scene is from Friday the 13th, where Bacon played Camp Crystal Lake counselor Jack. In the classic slasher film, Jack is killed by an arrow shot from under the bed while he's lying in his bunk.

Writer/director Kevin Smith recently revealed the unique condition that Carrie Fisher had to appear in his 2001 comedy, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. While not exactly a sequel to Clerks, the movie is still part of the universe, focusing on the titular drug dealers played by Smith and Jason Mewes. Considering the title is a direct reference to Empire Strikes Back, Princess Leia star Carrie Fisher also had a role, portraying the Nun, who provides the characters with a car ride.
In a YouTube video for GQ to promote his new film, The 4:30 Movie, Smith broke down his most iconic films, including Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. One of the anecdotes he shared was about how Carrie Fisher agreed to appear in the film. Rather than asking for an exorbitant fee, or even the actor's salary, the Star Wars alum asked only for the amount needed to...

Getting slapped by Dustin Hoffman might have rattled anyone else, but not Meryl Streep. Back in the day, this acting legend took a hit—literally—and still kept her cool, proving she was all in for the craft. Streep’s dedication to method acting was on another level, even when things got intense.

But here’s the kicker—it wasn’t the only time she pushed through some wild on-set moments. In another film, she went full method again, showing that when it came to delivering an unforgettable performance, nothing was going to stand in her way. Meryl Streep wasn’t just playing roles—she was living them.

Last year, it was revealed that Meryl Streep and her partner of four decades, Don Gummer, had been living separate lives for the past six years. Now speculations have emerged that the Oscar winner might’ve found her new match in her Only Murders in the Building costar Martin Short.

To the world, Carrie Fisher is synonymous with Princess Leia from Star Wars, but she was more than just one role. The late actress was also a gifted script doctor, although this may be unknown to some of her fans because most of the time, she was uncredited.

Simply put, Fisher helped in rewriting and improving movie scripts. In fact, she became so sought-after in this field that some filmmakers would approach her to ask for help or guidance.

Films like The Silence of the Lambs and Se7en are some of the most well-known and praised titles within thriller movies. The genre is one of the most popular in cinema, especially because of its versatility and ability to blend other genres, such as horror, mystery, and drama, into suspenseful plots. Among the thousands of thriller movies available, some will never live up to the grandeur of top-notch storylines.
However, there are some that, despite not being as successful as other thrillers, are vastly underrated. Movies like The Hand That Rocks the Cradle and Cape Fear have exceptional performances and an eerie, slow-burn plot. These titles have a fanbase that praises them as being some of the most entertaining thrillers despite them not being well-known in the genre.

From Olivia Colman’s fraught sojourn to the Greek Isles in The Lost Daughter to Jessie Buckley’s terrifying trip up the M5 to the English countryside in Men and M. Night’s bummer beaches in Old, taking a little “me time” away from home is often the single biggest mistake any movie character could possibly make. Horror, psychological drama, comedy, mystery, rom-com. The genre hardly matters. In film, the simple act of taking a vacation is rarely the relaxing, restorative interlude one hopes that it might be, placing uneasy personalities in uncertain—even harrowing—circumstances.
So with another holiday weekend upon us and the summer theoretically in full swing, it’s time to make peace with travel advisories being a moving target and hot spots foreign and domestic getting hotter by the minute. No surprise then, that many of us now eye these “escapes” with more than a little bit of skepticism.

Chicago – You’ll never hear a better speech about the actor’s gratitude for his hometown than John C. Reilly’s proclamation at the 60th Chicago International Film Festival’s Summer Gala on June 1st, 2024. He brought the house down with emotional and passionate words about his journey that began in the Windy City.
With an astonishing range of roles already under his belt, John C. Reilly has played an eclectic host of rich characters to great effect over the years, from seedy ne’er-do-wells to lovable and good-natured schlepps. The fifth of six children, John Christopher Reilly was born in Chicago, and was brought up on Chicago’s Southwest Side. On the amateur stage from age eight, Reilly trained at the Goodman School of Drama and eventually became a member of Chicago’s renowned Steppenwolf Theatre.

When director, Curtis Hanson, decided to strap Meryl Streep into an inflatable boat and send her on a whitewater rafting trip down the Salmon River in Idaho, we officially became indebted to that man.1994's The River Wild represents just about everything we never knew we wanted out of a film, including marking Streep's first and only foray into the action genre. She portrays the plucky and determined Gail Hartman, a former guide on the Salmon River with years of whitewater rafting experience under her belt who's on a rafting trip with her husband, Tom (David Strathairn), son Roarke (Joseph Mazzello), and dog, Maggie.

Jim Carrey once called himself the “Tom Hanks of the Golden Globes” after his second straight victory with the Hollywood Foreign Press in 2000 (for “Man on the Moon” following “The Truman Show”). He could win with that group but somehow couldn’t impress Oscar voters. And he’s not the only actor in that situation. Our photo gallery features Carrey among the 20 actors who’ve never been nominated for an Oscar.
Even Academy Awards hosts such as Billy Crystal and Steve Martin haven’t been noticed by Oscar voters other than seeing them perform on the ceremony stage. They have both received critics awards and Golden Globe nominations in their long careers. Martin has at least received an honorary Oscar, but alas no individual nomination for either one throughout their careers.

The year 1990 saw the release of James Ellroy’s sweeping crime novel L.A. Confidential, which Ellroy wanted to be the most epic book about L.A. ever written. In his own eyes, the author accomplished that goal, calling his own work a “masterpiece” and one he did not envision making the transition to the big screen. Not that he really cared; Ellroy was always vocal about his disinterest in seeing his books adapted into movies, as he wasn’t particularly interested in the medium.
But there was a kindred spirit who similarly loved the City of Angels, and who wanted to tell a very big story about the place where he grew up. Curtis Hanson had been a director of adequate thrillers like The Hand That Rocks the Cradle and The River Wild, but he was searching for a project that would allow him to tell a grand-scale story about Los Angeles.

If Disney had released Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl in 2013, it could have sparked a trend of theme park ride-inspired movies, similar to how live-action remakes became the norm for the studio. For example, Disneyland's Grizzly River Run could have been the inspiration for a movie about a dangerous whitewater rafting expedition. A Jungle Cruise movie may have been produced much earlier than 2021.
A movie trend similar to the proliferation of live-action remakes could have begun in the mid-2010s if Disney had released Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003) 10 years later. The original Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Disneyland in Anaheim was similar to what it is now: A 10 to 15-minute boat ride with various pirates singing "A Pirate's Life for Me," except the animatronics modeled after Captain Jack Sparrow were absent. Jack Sparrow and other characters were created...

November 1st is a tough day for horror hounds. The decorations are still up, the air remains crisp, but the spirit has seemingly moved on, perhaps vanquished by the sun. When it comes to movies, we live in a world of tentpole franchises, sequels, re-imaginings, and reboots. These films are done to varying success; some perform better than others. Like any movie, it comes down to story, direction, and acting. If you nail those three things, you can make a pretty entertaining film...even if it is a reboot.
One concept that's always in discussion as a potential reboot is the iconic 80s horror franchise, A Nightmare on Elm Street. The original movie is not a stranger to the reboot treatment, as a version was released in 2010 starring Jackie Earle Haley as the iconic Freddy Krueger. Needless to say, this particular reboot fell flat for many fans and did not come anywhere close to the original's success. This was partly due to the man wearing the striped sweater, Jackie Earle Haley, who played Freddy as a darker, more sinister slasher...

Star Wars star Carrie Fisher's legacy cannot be emphasized enough. Princess Leia paved the way for science-fiction heroines. Fisher herself continues to be a role model for countless young women. After her time in the galaxy far, far away, she starred in films such as When Harry Met Sally and The Blues Brothers, though no other role of hers managed to become such a cultural icon as Leia.
However, her influence in Hollywood extends far beyond her performances. Beginning in the 1990s, Fisher began taking work as a script doctor. She worked on countless popular movies. Yet, this is still one of the lesser-known aspects of her career. It deserves to have light shed on it, as her impact there is just as important as her status as one of the most important women in science fiction.

NCIS: Sydney Trailer Teases Action and a Dynamic New Team as Iconic Franchise Relocates to Australia
Just when we thought we wouldn't have any NCIS content on the CBS fall schedule, the network called in an assist from NCIS: Sydney.
And now, we have our first look.
CBS dropped the official trailer for NCIS: Sydney Season 1 on Wednesday, and the series certainly capitalizes on its new setting.
It's hard to believe it's taken this long to get an international iteration of the franchise off the ground, but we'll get it on Mondays this fall when NCIS: Sydney debuts in the 10 p.m. Et timeslot.
Off the bat, the series does have the action and teamwork that made its predecessors massive success stories.

While the series was announced for Australian audiences earlier this year, there was no telling whether it would get a stateside home.
Thankfully, U.S. fans can watch the latest chapter in the iconic franchise beginning Monday, November 13, at 10 p.m. Et/Pt.
"With rising international tensions in the Indo-Pacific, a brilliant and eclectic team of U.S. NCIS agents and the Australian Federal Police (Afp) are grafted into a multinational taskforce to keep naval crimes in check in the most contested patch of ocean on the planet," the official synopsis for the new procedural teases.

It's been 20 years since "The O.C." debuted on Fox, but it's still hard to see past Seth Cohen when Adam Brody shows up in a movie or TV show. It shouldn't be, because he's a terrific actor, but there's something about his still-fresh-faced persona that immediately harkens back to his time as America's favorite nerd-turned-awkwardly-popular-kid on the millennials' slightly savvier version of "Beverly Hills 90210."
Recently, Brody took his typecasting head-on with Evan Morgan's "The Kid Detective," an underrated and frustratingly underseen comedy about an Encyclopedia Brown-type wunderkind who's grown up to be a hard-drinking-and-drugging failure of a detective. His character has never made good on his early promise, but suddenly a murder case falls in his lap, and he has the opportunity to break free of his boy-wonder shackles.
Now 43, Brody's taking roles seemingly designed to torch his bantering nice-guy image. You can currently see him in...

Plot: Follows a pair of siblings who love but distrust each other as they embark on a white-water rafting trip with a small group. One of their friends from childhood turns out to be more dangerous than he appears.
Review: Undoubtedly there will be a ton of comparisons to the original film, but honestly outside of the fact that they are on a river and there’s a convict, this isn’t much connection. In fact, I feel calling it The River Wild does a massive disservice as you’re immediately going to draw a comparison to the Meryl Streep-starring venture. But despite this not having any Oscar Winners in it, the performances are entertaining and the dynamics between the characters are interesting. I found myself on the edge of my seat, despite the story having lower stakes than the original.

River Wild, a reimagining of the 1994 thriller The River Wild, helmed by director Ben Ketai, weaves a storyline centered around Joey, a young woman, and her estranged brother Gray, as they embark on a thrilling whitewater rafting expedition. Two other women and Gray’s childhood friend Trevor also join them on this trip.
As the story unfolds, the film explores the intricacies of the characters, each shrouded in mystery and harboring hidden depths. Joey and Gray’s fractured relationship provides a compelling backdrop, showcasing their emotion and the tension in their journey. However, it is Trevor’s presence that becomes a focal point of suspense in the narrative. Following the revelation of a shocking twist, we discover that Trevor is a convicted parolee whose presence is triggering a sense of impending danger among the group. Despite the apparent red flag, Gray remains undeterred in his decision to include Trevor on their expedition,...

"Don't look back - just run!" Surprise - another remake coming our way! Universal Home Entertainment has revealed an official trailer for a remake of the fun 90s river thriller The River Wild, this new one directed by Ben Ketai. It may not come as a surprise they're dumping this one direct-to-video in just a few weeks, without much buzz at all. The original film from 1994, starring Meryl Streep & David Strathairn, is a cheesy but actually a pretty solid adventure thriller with some good twists in it (I remember seeing it in theaters and also renting it on VHS after). 2023's The River Wild follows a pair of siblings who love but distrust each other as they embark on a white-water rafting trip with a small group. One of their old friends from growing up, who also joins them, turns out to be more dangerous than he appears. Stuck in the rapids,...

Almost exactly one year ago today, we heard that real-life couple Leighton Meester and Adam Brody, along with Taran Killam (Meester’s co-star in the TV series Single Parents) would be starring in a reimagining of the 1991 thriller The River Wild, which starred Meryl Streep, David Straithairn, and Joseph Mazzello as a family that had the bad luck of crossing paths with criminals played by Kevin Bacon and John C. Reilly while on a river rafting trip. Now Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has announced that they’ll be giving the reimagining, which drops the definite article and is simply called River Wild, a digital, Blu-ray, and DVD release on August 1st – and along with this announcement comes the unveiling of a trailer, which you can watch in the embed above!

Lawrence Turman Dies: Oscar-Nominated Producer Of ‘The Graduate’, ‘American History X’ & More Was 96
Oscar-nominated producer Lawrence Turman died Saturday at the Motion Picture and Television Country Home and Hospital. He was 96. He had a stellar career not only as a producer of such seminal films as The Graduate (1967), The Great White Hope (1970), American History X (1998) and many more in a producing career that lasted six decades, but he also took a significant turn when he left his partnership with producer David Foster to head the prestigious Peter Stark Producing Program at USC in 1991, an association that continued until his retirement just two years ago.
His son, John Turman, confirmed the death to Deadline. “Our father Lawrence Turman passed away late yesterday,” he said. “It’s sad, but he had a long and storied life, and it’s the passing of an era.” He added that the MPTF is planning a memorial service as well as USC at a later date.

Lawrence Turman, producer of films including Oscar winner “The Graduate,” and longtime chair of the Peter Stark Producing program at USC, died Saturday at the Motion Picture Home in Woodland Hills. He was 96.
Turman’s producing career spanned 50 years, and he served as director of USC’s Peter Stark Producing program from 1991 until he retired in 2021 at age 94.
Born in Los Angeles in 1926, Turman graduated from UCLA and broke into the industry after answering an ad in Variety to work at the Kurt Frings agency. Adam Brody is headed to Netflix.
The Shazam! Fury of the Gods actor will star alongside Kristen Bell in an untitled comedy from creator Erin Foster (Barely Famous) and executive producer Steven Levitan (Modern Family, Reboot). The series is “centered on the unlikely relationship between an outspoken, agnostic woman (Bell) and an unconventional rabbi (Brody),” the logline reads.
Not much else is known about Bell’s Joanne, but Brody’s Noah is a charming rabbi who is stuck in his ways and used to playing things safe, according to the streamer. “He starts to stumble when he meets a brutally honest and proactive Joanne, totally upending his safe life plan,” reads the description for his character.

Adam Brody has talked at length about the one that got away, and with a Flash-led movie on the verge of release, one can only wonder how things would’ve ended up had Brody’s Barry Allen made it to the big screen in George Miller’s Justice League: Mortal. The epic superhero tale fell apart in early 2007 due to the impending writers’ strike and the loss of an Australian tax credit, and it continues to be one of Hollywood’s ultimate “what if?” stories.
So, when David F. Sandberg’s Shazam! made its way to the big screen in 2019, one of the most rewarding aspects of the film was Brody’s surprise cameo as the super-powered alter ego of Jack Dylan Grazer’s Freddy Freeman. It was not only perfect casting by virtue of the two actors’ similar wit, but it also allowed for a Justice League: Mortal reunion between Brody and D.J. Cotrona,...

Exclusive: Freevee, Amazon’s ad-supported video streaming service is developing Arranged, a half-hour single-camera romantic comedy series co-written and executive produced by With Love creator Gloria Calderón Kellett and Saturday Night Live alum Taran Killam. The project stems from Kellett’s GloNation Studios under the company’s overall deal with Amazon Studios.
Arranged follows a self-destructive movie star (Killam) and an ambitious pop Latina diva who agree to a mutually beneficial “public relationship” in order to help sell her upcoming breakup album and save his declining career, a decision they immediately regret as they quickly realize they hate each other’s guts.
The series is fictional but there are obvious points of reference: the high-profile romances between Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck as well as Ariana Grande and Pete Davidson.
Kellett and Killam will executive produce with Marc Provissiero (Pen15) for Kellett’s GloNation banner as part of her Amazon Studios deal.

In the 1970s and 1980s director Brian De Palma had some high profile hits with Hitchcockian thrillers such as "Sisters", "Obsession", "Dressed to Kill", "Blow Out" and "Body Double". De Palma's defenders extolled the virtues of these films as clever homages to Hitchcock while detractors accused De Palma of using The Master's formulas to make a fast buck. In 1982 director Robert Benton jumped on the same bandwagon with his own Hitchcockian project, "Still of the Night", which was shot under the title "Stab" before the marketing campaign had been re-evaluated. A few years earlier Benton had triumphed at the Oscars with "Kramer vs. Kramer", taking home the Best Director Oscar. That film also provided an important career boost for Meryl Streep, who also won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. The two were reunited for this project which stands out on both of their credentials as an odd choice.
