Fake story that tells a cruel but honest fact.

What is worth noting is that the criticism of the dross of the traditional Confucian teaching that discriminate against women.

One of the vivid example is no other than the purchasing and selling of girls as product. These girls were treated as objects instead of people and used to make a profit for their owners.

At the first glance, the audience would probably want to kill Miss Shang, but in truth, she is also a victim herself, being the result of such discrimination. In fact, if it was not for the dross in the tradition, Miss Shang would probably not turn to a lesbian. Furthermore, her purchase of the young girls was the last means for those young girls to survive, the other alternatives being sold to brothels or simply starve to death. These are the harsh reality of the 1900's China and they are difficult to observe in this movie, but the audience should not forget these facts since they will effect the judgment of characters in the movie.
