Best Actor Oscar Winners List (Photo Credit – Instagram/Wikipedia)
The Academy Awards have long vaunted acting titans, and a rare few male actors have commandeered the Best Actor statuette more than once, with Daniel Day-Lewis scaling the peak thrice. From living legends like Tom Hanks to recent winners such as Adrien Brody, 10 men are trailing Day-Lewis’ record. Here is every name with two or more wins in this hallowed category.
1. Daniel Day-Lewis
Sir Daniel Day-Lewis stands alone with three Best Actor Oscars, a feat no other man has matched. His wins were facilitated thanks to dramatic transformations for My Left Foot, There Will Be Blood, and Lincoln—roles that exhibit him as an unforgettable chameleon. The Irish actor has retired since 2017’s Phantom Thread, but his five nominations out of fewer than a couple dozen movies certainly make us wonder whether Day-Lewis could come back for that gold once again...

Earning his second Best Actor Oscar 22 years after his first, Adrien Brody entered the history books as the first leading actor to win two statuettes on his first two attempts on Sunday.
He won for his role as an ingenious, haunted architect in Brady Corbet’s epic, following his win in 2003 for Roman Polanski’s biographical World War II drama “The Pianist.”
And by wining Best Actor on Sunday, Brody not only made history but also preserved his place among Oscar milestones. Had 29-year-old Timothée Chalamet won in the category for “A Complete Unknown,” he would have become the youngest Best Actor victor ever, beating Brody’s own record from 2003.
Brody is the 11th leading actor to win twice in the top category.

1998 was a titanic year for the Oscars, in more ways than one. James Cameron's Titanic took home Best Picture, as well as 10 other Oscars, tying the record set by Ben-Hur and, later The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King. Not only that, but the ceremony's broadcast amassed 57 million viewers. 1998 became the most watched Academy Awards ever and still is to this day.
2024's ceremony, however, secured only 19.5 million viewers, which was, believe it or not, an improvement on 2023's numbers (18.7 million). This is nothing compared to the Academy Awards' dismal performance during the height of the pandemic, which saw the show's lowest numbers ever, 10 million in 2021. In fact, the Oscars have not been able to boast numbers above 40 million since 2014.
What could possibly be responsible for this significant decrease in Oscars spectatorship? Movie lovers, critics, and sociologistsalike have theorized for some time now about the various phenomena...

We have ourselves a race! The Oscar contests for Best Actor and Best Actress got especially interesting at the Screen Actors Guild Awards on Sunday because the winners disagreed with another industry peer group honor, the BAFTA Awards. But who tends to win the Oscar under those circumstances, the SAG winner, the BAFTA winner, or someone else entirely?
SEE2025 Oscars race scorecard: 'Conclave,' Timothée Chalamet pull off SAG Awards wins while Demi Moore rebounds
Let's start with Best Actress, where Demi Moore (The Substance) won the SAG Award while Mikey Madison (Anora) won BAFTA. This is the fifth year in a row that the two awards diverged. Let's break down all those disagreements year by year.
2023: Lily Gladstone (Killers of the Flower Moon) won SAG, Emma Stone (Poor Things) won BAFTA — Oscar went to the BAFTA winner.

Long before he became synonymous with iconic roles in The Shining and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Jack Nicholson's first foray into acting was in a not-too-widely-known gritty exploitation film. This early performance paved the way for his legendary career run that would eventually redefine Hollywood stardom. And what was the movie? Released 67 years ago, young Nicholson first stepped into the cinematic world with his debut in the 1958 film The Cry Baby Killer.
The Cry Baby Killer is a tense thriller of the time that delves into youthful angst — and unintended consequences. Nicholson plays Jimmy Wallace, a teenager who, after a violent altercation, believes he has committed murder. In a panic, Jimmy takes hostages, leading to a standoff that captures the attention of the entire city. This role not only marked Nicholson's entry into film but also showcased his ability to convey deep emotional turmoil right out of the gate,...

The stars really did come out for the 50th anniversary special for Saturday Night Live. Introducing Adam Sandler, who performed an incredible SNL50 tribute song, was none other than the legendary Jack Nicholson.
When the camera cut to Nicholson, the applause rained down. The actor kept it simple, saying, "Ladies and gentlemen, Adam Sandler!" From there, Sandler gave a shout-out to Jack and began his song, singing, "Everyone in this room has something in common. All of our lives were changed by the show."
Sandler is known for his songs and mashups, and this one was perfect for the occasion. He sang about the cast, funny moments (including those behind the scenes), the crew, Lorne Michaels, and paid a very heartfelt tribute to fellow SNL vet and friend, the late Chris Farley, who passed away in 1997, and Norm Macdonald, who died in 2021. Disney pushed the opening of “Elio,” the studio’s upcoming Pixar film, by a week, while unveiling the release dates of Sam Raimi’s “Send Help” and James L. Brooks’ “Ella McCay.”
“Elio,” an animated science fiction adventure film, will debut on June 20. It was originally slated to open on June 13. That means it will no longer go head-to-head with Universal and DreamWorks’ live-action remake of “How to Train Your Dragon,” which could have cannibalized its core audience of kids and families. In its new date, it will face off against Sony’s “28 Years Later,” a zombie thriller that is pitched at older moviegoers.
Those are also the crowds that will be turning up for “Send Help” and “Ella McCay,” both of which will be released by 20th Century Studios. “Send Help,” a horror film with Rachel McAdams, Chris Pang, Dylan O’Brien, and Dennis Haysbert, will open on Jan.

It’s hard to find a more legendary Hollywood career than that of James L. Brooks. The three-time Academy Award-winner has been a major force behind the big and small screen alike, not only helming classics like As Good as It Gets and Terms of Endearment but also serving as a co-creator of beloved titles such as The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Taxi and The Simpsons. Essentially, anything Brooks attaches his name to turns to gold — in some cases, literally. However, the last decade or so has seen the creative take some well-deserved time away from the industry, giving him a chance to enjoy what he built for himself. Still, it’s hard to stay away from something that you love so deeply, so we were thrilled when it was revealed that the celebrated director would be returning to helm a new feature.

We had learned in the tail end of 2023 that the Courteney Cox horror series “Shining Vale” had been cancelled after two seasons at Starz, with the horror-comedy series being pulled from the Starz streaming service entirely at the end of the year. In other words, there was nowhere to even legally watch the series after its cancellation, but that has thankfully changed.
At the start of this year, Bloody Disgusting has learned, “Shining Vale” returned to streaming. The previously released two seasons of the show are now streaming exclusively on Max.
Created by Jeff Astrof and Sharon Horgan, the short-lived horror series was produced by Warner Bros. TV, which would explain how it ended up on Max over a year after being given the axe by Starz. Mind you, this doesn’t mean the series is returning to life with new seasons, but rather its previously produced two seasons have found a new streaming home.

Nicholson is an actor so iconic, he’s sometimes referred to simply as “Jack.” The star of classics such as The Shining, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Chinatown, Batman, The Witches of Eastwick, The Departed and As Good As It Gets is certainly enjoying his retirement and continues to turn down roles. Lou Adler, a veteran record producer who is a close friend of Nicholson’s, revealed a couple of years ago, “A friend of mine wanted to put him in a movie. And he had a conversation with him. But Jack says, ‘I don’t want to do it.’ He goes, ‘You know what I did today? I sat under a tree and I read a book.’” Adler laughed, saying, “That sounds like Jack.” Then, he added that Jack is just “doing whatever he really wants to do.”

If you wanted to work with the great Betty White at any point throughout her extraordinary 70-plus-year career, your best bet was to offer her a television gig. Starting with the talk show "Hollywood on Television" in 1949, White made the small screen, and America's living rooms, her home via sitcoms, game shows, and appearances on late night programs like "The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson." White was a delightful presence with killer comedy timing, her secret weapon being that daffy persona that often bubbled over with surprisingly scalding wit. You never knew what was going to come out of White's mouth, and that made her one of the medium's unlikeliest stars (though her presence was once ratings poison for "Bones").
This isn't to say White didn't do movies. Her first credited appearance didn't arrive until 1962, when she played a U.S. Senator from Kansas in Otto Preminger's terrific "Advise and Consent.

Jack Nicholson was already a major star before he played the Joker in 1989's "Batman." But his unprecedented deal with Warner Bros. for that particular blockbuster netted the actor more than $50 million and made him one of the wealthiest performers in Hollywood — not to mention one of the most influential. After somehow wangling a portion of the profits from both the box office and merchandising revenues from "Batman," Nicholson set a new precedent for big-name performers moving forward. The actor also basically ensured that "Batman" never actually turned a profit for Warners even though it became a box office smash.
When "Batman" debuted in the summer of 89, it arrived amid a public frenzy dubbed "Bat-mania" by the media. Audiences were clamoring for director Tim Burton's take on the Caped Crusader, which promised to restore the "Batman" property to its dark roots and deliver a serious take on a...

Denzel Washington is on his way to making Oscar history for his performance as a former slave who plots to be the emperor of Rome in Paramount Pictures’ “Gladiator II,” the latest from director Ridley Scott. Right now, he has two Academy Awards to his name for “Glory” (1989) in Best Supporting Actor and “Training Day” (2001) in Best Actor. If he were to prevail for “Gladiator II” in early 2025, he would join an exclusive list of seven other people to win at least three times in the acting categories.

Muna’s Katie Gavin took a softer approach to Madonna’s pop classic “Like a Prayer” during a live recording at SiriusXM’s The Coffee House. In support of her debut album What a Relief, Gavin also performed three songs off of her latest LP: “Aftertaste,” “Today,” and “Inconsolable.”
Gavin’s cover of “Like a Prayer” traded Madonna’s high-energy pop sound for a more tender, indie-inspired approach. Strumming an acoustic guitar, with support from an electric guitarist, Gavin sweetly sang the 1989 single’s warm chorus, “When you call my...

A Marvel star has been cast, along with six other actors, in the upcoming movie adaptation of Shiver, a young adult fantasy romance novel that has drawn comparisons to Twilight. The paranormal romance in the Twilight book series written by Stephanie Meyer became a popular culture phenomenon, which led to movie adaptations starring Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, and Taylor Lautner. The series' fantastical world and the love triangle between Bella Swan, Edward Cullen, and Jacob Black continues to resonate years later.
Shiver was first published in 2009 and was followed by three sequels in The Wolves of Mercy Falls series. The first bestselling novel written by Maggie Stiefvater follows a young woman named Grace who is saved from a pack of wolves by a yellow-eyed wolf when she is a child. Hollywood anarchist and noted nudist Jack Nicholson saw his career flash before his eyes in the mid-1980s as the era’s most popular movies totally confounded him. In a 1986 interview with The New York Times, Nicholson was asked if he felt “like a creative person trapped in an uncreative age in the industry.”
''Well, you know,” Nicholson replied, “last night I saw — what’s that movie? Ferris something?”
Was Nicholson referring to Ferris Bueller’s Day Off? Anyone? Anyone?
“Well, that movie made me feel totally irrelevant to anything that any audience could want, and 119 years old,” he explained.
To make matters worse, it felt like the audience was on John Hughes’ side of the argument. “Believe me, everyone else watching it liked it,” he said. “And you know, I literally walked out of there thinking my days are numbered. These people are trying to kill me.”

With its ’70s-era production details and sprawling age-spanning ensemble, Saturday Night has high hopes for the Oscars this year. But if the Jason Reitman period piece manages to win one, it will achieve something that the cast it depicts never could.
Though Saturday Night Live has racked up a record-breaking 103 Emmys and churned out generational talent with regularity over its 50 seasons, only six among its more than 150 castmembers have ever been nominated for an Oscar (five if you don’t include one-episode-and-done player Laurie Metcalf).
Its only winner? Robert Downey Jr., just this past March for Oppenheimer. And his 1985-86 SNL stint is a career footnote.
“I don’t think it’s conscious,” says Turner Classic Movies host Dave Karger, an Oscar prognosticator and author of 50 Oscar Nights, “but there might be something going on. There’s obviously a disconnect between SNL and [film] awards.”

Jack Nicholson was such a tremendous box office draw and awards darling for the majority of his career that it is easy to look past some of his best titles. While any conversation about his body of work is destined to include discussions about One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest or As Good As It Gets, Nicholson had many other hits that were heralded at the time of their release, such as the John Huston assassin comedy Prizzis Honor. While it may not have the same cultural cache today as The Shining or The Last Detail, Prizzis Honor is a hilarious subversion of expectations that combines the best of the romantic comedy and gangster thriller genres.

When Kevin Smith made Clerks, he was on top of the indie comedy scene. With that, he had some clout to get his next movie going without much of a wait. Unfortunately, it was about as well-received as a stink palm, forcing Smith back to the drawing board — or the comic book panels, returning with Chasing Amy in a go-for-broke move.
Chasing Amy still remains one of the bravest films of the 1990s, not only for its content but for how Kevin Smith used it as a way to show he still had a place in the business. As he remembers in the new documentary Chasing Chasing Amy (via People), “Clerks began my career. Mallrats killed it. So you got me needing to do something to stay in this business, or else we were out. That’s a big part of where [the movie] comes from.”

Most people think of retirement as one of life's rites of passage, something akin to graduating from school or getting a promotion at a job. While some people have careers that treat retirement in this manner, there are many others for whom retirement is more of a state of mind than anything else. This is certainly true of an artist; some never seem to want to stop or slow down (may I remind you that The Rolling Stones just finished their latest tour this past July), while others feel that they don't wish to wear out their welcome. Then there are other factors, such as changing cultural norms as well as the waxing and waning of opportunities as they dwindle with age. Of course, age itself can be a factor; bodies do inexorably decline, after all.

Jack Nicholson, 87, hasn't officially retired from acting, but he also doesn't do it anymore. In 2013, Nicholson spoke with Vanity Fair about rumors of his retirement, and he merely wanted to say that he had retired from incessant flirting, not acting. He did admit, however, that he wasn't passionately driven to put himself out in the world anymore. Nicholson's good friend Lou Adler (the famed record producer) told Marc Maron in 2023 (via The Wrap) that Nicholson had been contacted several times about appearing in multiple film projects since 2010, but that Nicholson turned them all down. It seems that the actor would rather sit under a tree and read a book. Which is, of course, his right. With 80 film credits and multiple Academy Awards, not to mention worldwide fame, Nicholson has earned it. So, although he's never announced his retirement, Nicholson is more or less retired.

Jack Nicholsons name has to be brought up whenever any discussions are had about the greatest actors of all time, as it is rather overwhelming to consider how many excellent classics he has appeared in. Nicholson is one of the rare stars who has been in the industry throughout several stages of development; he got his big break during the New Hollywood era, but remained active in making new films until his final performance in How Do You Know back in 2010. Nicholson was always great at playing villains, and is often associated with the line heres Johnny in The Shining, or you cant handle the truth in A Few Good Men. However, a touching monologue about the importance of self-improvement in As Good as It Gets represents the best of what Nicholson can do on screen.

For a few years in the '90s, it seemed like Helen Hunt was destined to be a mainstay on the big and small screen alike forever. The actor landed her earliest movie role in 1977, playing a teenager in the disaster movie "Rollercoaster," which featured a singularly weird plot about a man trying to bomb an amusement park ride. Hunt continued to act over the next decade, taking roles in films like "Girls Just Want To Have Fun" and "Peggy Sue Got Married," plus the popular doctor drama "St. Elsewhere." But it wasn't until the '90s, when Hunt earned a trifecta of great, memorable roles, that she truly became a household name.
Hunt's big break came from "Mad About You," a 1992 sitcom in which she played one half of a New York City newlywed couple opposite Paul Reiser. Plotlines for the show mined married life for humor, but they...

For over five decades, actor Jack Nicholson has been the case study on how to appear effortlessly cool. Despite refusing to play by Hollywood's rules, Nicholson is as beloved an actor as they come, thanks in large part to his ability to ooze both charm and confidence. This skill has been on vivid display from the actor's earliest days as not a movie star, but a television performer.
Best remembered today for his performances in five-star classics like The Shining, Chinatown, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, As Good As It Gets, and so many, many more, Jack Nicholson's early television career has often (understandably) been overlooked. While it might not pack any legendary performances to rival that of his run on the silver screen, Nicholson's history in television is still one worth looking back on, especially in regard to how it ended on the set of the Western TV...

Although Nicole Kidman recently accepted the American Film Institute’s Life Achievement Award in recognition of her four-decade acting career, there is no indication that her life’s work is anywhere near finished. Indeed, according to Gold Derby’s racetrack odds, the 56-year-old is well on her way to picking up her sixth Oscar nomination for her lead performance in the critically acclaimed “Babygirl,” which would make her the 13th AFI honoree to subsequently earn film academy recognition in a competitive category.
The fact that Kidman’s life achievement award was presented by her pal and costar, Meryl Streep, is quite fitting given that she’s the only woman to go from being an AFI recipient to an Oscar contender. Since receiving the AFI honor in 2004, she has racked up a whopping eight bids, including a successful one for “The Iron Lady” (2012). A previous champ for “Kramer vs. Kramer” (1980) and...

Helen Hunt is an award-winning actress who has been a mainstay of dramatic and romantic movies and TV shows, earning herself a tidy net worth in the process. Hunt began her acting career in 1973 with a small role in the film Pioneer Woman as Sarah Sargeant. The first time Hunt gained wider recognition was in 1984, with the sci-fi film Trancers. Directed by Ty Roberts, You Gotta Believe is a heart-warming family sports drama set in the early 2000s. Written by Lane Garrison and Roberts himself, the film is a nostalgic throwback to the feel-good, underdog sports movies of the ’70s and ’80s.
Produced by a team that includes Byron Campbell and Houston Hill, the film features a stellar cast, with Hollywood stars Luke Wilson and Greg Kinnear leading the charge.
Based on a true story, You Gotta Believe follows the underdog 2002 Fort Worth, Texas, Little League team. After dedicating their season to their ailing coach (and teammate’s father), these players embark on a miraculous journey that culminates in a record-breaking ESPN showdown. Luke Wilson plays the determined coach, while Greg Kinnear portrays a supportive but sceptical volunteer.

This follow-up to the 2000 Best Picture champ stars Lucius (Paul Mescal) as Lucius, the grandson of Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius. Lucius is forced into slavery but resolves to fight as a gladiator under the leadership of power broker Macrinus. And that’s where Washington comes in. The titanic Washington plays Macrinus, who is the mentor figure to Lucius and also opposes the rule of emperors Caracalla (Fred Hechinger) and Geta (Joseph Quinn).
We are predicting that Washington will be nominated for Best Supporting Actor alongside Samuel L. Jackson (“The Piano Lesson”), Clarence Maclin (“Sing Sing”), Kieran Culkin (“A Real Pain”), and Stanley Tucci (“Conclave...

Robert Downey Jr. could be about to join an exclusive actors club by becoming just the fourth person to win both an Oscar and an Emmy for acting in the same calendar year.
Downey Jr. won Best Supporting Actor at this year’s Oscars for his portrayal of Lewis Strauss in “Oppenheimer.” That Christopher Nolan biopic, which also won Best Picture, followed Cillian Murphy as J. Robert Oppenheimer and depicted the scientist’s creation, and later guilt, of the atomic bomb. Downey Jr’s Strauss was a politician who was once an ally of Oppenheimer only to become his rival. Downey Jr’s portrayal of Strauss, the film’s villain, made him the obvious choice for the Best Supporting Actor Oscar and that remained throughout awards season. He won the BAFTA, Critics Choice, Golden Globe, and SAG awards before he eventually won the Academy Award, beating fellow Oscar nominees Sterling K. Brown...

Something's Gotta Give, starring Nicholson and Reeves, is now streaming on Max, showcasing Keaton's Oscar-winning performance. The film is a classic romantic comedy directed by Nancy Meyers, praised for the onscreen chemistry between Keaton and Nicholson. Reeves shines in his role as the earnest younger love interest, proving his versatility beyond action movies.
Jack Nicholson and Keanu Reeves' Oscar-nominated comedy Something's Gotta Give is now streaming on Max. Even though Nicholson has not officially announced his retirement from professional acting, the 3-time Oscar winner has not appeared in a movie since 2010's How Do You Know. On the other hand, Reeves' popularity somehow seems to have skyrocketed even more over the last decade with his massively successful John Wick franchise after The Matrix made him an international star in 1999. Something's Gotta Give is also available on HBO.
