Indie streamer Nebula has unveiled its first original scripted series, dark anthology Sub/liminal with Oscar winner Dan Jinks on board to executive produce.
Sub/liminal is touted as resembling The Twilight Zone and Black Mirror as it explores power dynamics in human relationships and what happens when those relationships go off kilter. The first season will be six standalone episodes, with stories from Nebula content creators brought to the screen by seasoned directors and producers.
The series is set to begin production later this year and underlines efforts by Nebula as an indie streaming platform to work with big name Hollywood players.
“Dan Jinks has an Oscar. I’m doing whatever he says,” Nebula CEO Dave Wiskus said in a statement.

Sleater-Kinney have dropped a new song, “This Time,” one of three fresh additions to the upcoming deluxe edition of their latest album, Little Rope.
“This Time” is a pensive, steady tune driven by warbling keys and keening guitar, though it does briefly kick into double-time rock and roll over drive. In a statement, Sleater-Kinney’s Carrie Brownstein and Corin Tucker said “This Time” was the last song they wrote for Little Rope and also “the last to get cut once we decided we preferred the evenness and succinctness of ten songs.

Sleater-Kinney have revealed “Here Today,” an outtake from their recent album Little Rope.
The track is a meditative rocker that contemplates the brevity of life. It’s paired with a black-and-white video of Los Angeles guerrilla projections — made by activist art collective In Decline — as the lyrics flash across the screen: “You are on the dirty streets/While I sit on heated seats/Pretend we’re not both occupants/Of a world that’s gone insane.”
“We’re excited to share ‘Here Today’ with you,” Carrie Brownstein and Corin Tucker said in a statement.

The Jack Reacher book series, which contains almost 30 novels, can be read in any order as most books function as standalone works. Reacher season 1 received positive reviews from critics and viewers, leading to its renewal for a second and third season. Lee Child has published 28 Jack Reacher books as of October 2023, with the 29th installment scheduled for release in late 2024.
If viewers of Reacher on Amazon Prime Video crave more Jack Reacher stories, they are in luck because the show is based on a book series containing almost 30 novels. Thankfully, the series can be read in any order since most books function as standalone works (but with Reacher still as the main character). Lee Child created the franchise when he published the first novel — Killing Floor — in the late 1990s, and it was an immediate hit. The plan is for a three-season series, with Diosual seeking co-production and co-investment partners, with two international streamers understood to have been close to closing deals.

Despite singer-songwriter Laetitia Tamko’s singular talents, her career as Vagabon nonetheless traces a familiar arc. Like Sudan Archives and Mitski before her, Tamko has evolved from a DIY indie artist—on her bracing debut EP, Persian Gardens—into something approaching a conventional pop singer. Tamko’s third studio album, Sorry I Haven’t Called, leans in a more tonally upbeat direction than her previous releases, with help from Rostam Batmanglij, who co-produced the album. The result is a serviceable enough pop effort, but much of Tamko’s edges have been sadly sanded away.
Opener “Can I Talk My Shit” is so springy and breezy that the angst and moodiness of Tamko’s past output don’t just seem far off, they feel like the creation of a completely different artist. Here and on “You Know How,” her vocals feel devoid of any distinctive characteristics and are needlessly Auto-Tuned.

Apparently determined to prove herself francophone cinema’s most inexhaustible precious resource, Virginie Efira once again lights up the screen prior to burning it down in a role that, after Justine Triet’s “Sibyl,” Paul Verhoeven’s “Benedetta” and Rebecca Zlotowski’s “Other People’s Children,” is of a type she has come to define: the strong-willed, smart fortysomething woman chafing against her society’s conformist expectations. Delphine Deloget’s debut “All to Play For” features one of Efira’s more straightforward incarnations of this dramatic type — fewer sly kinks, no arch winks. But she is no less riveting and lovely for it and in Deloget’s confident, gentle grip, she turns in one of her most committed performances, all the more moving for its commitment to valorizing the kind of woman seldom treated on screen with such respect and compassion.

Other People’s Children: Deloget Butts with Bureaucracy in Familial Drama
Virginie Efira continues to explore the arduous spectrum of contemporary motherhood in her latest film, Rien à perdre, the directorial debut of Delphine Deloget. While the English language title, All to Play For might not correctly convey the film’s spirit, the actual translation, Nothing to Lose, is a better indication of the (somewhat) impossible scenario a single mother finds herself thrust into when the social welfare system intervenes in the rearing of her youngest child. Deloget seems intent on showcasing the frustrating errors committed by both parties claiming a stake in one very hapless child’s interests but the foundations of the narrative tend feel a bit exhaustingly soppy by the time the film leads us to a questionable resolution without configuring the requisite desperation to justify itself.…...

Johnny Paycheck would have turned 83 this past Monday. In 1977, he scored three consecutive Top 10 country songs, including his biggest hit, the No. 1 “Take This Job and Shove It.” But while Paycheck, who died at age 64 in 2003, is synonymous with the song about sticking it to — and flipping off — The Man, it was actually written by David Allan Coe. Coe cut his version for his 1978 Family Album and performed it frequently in his shows, including on the latter-day concert document Biketoberfest ’01: Live From the Iron Horse Saloon.

Kiss reunited with original lead guitarist Ace Frehley for the first time in 17 years for an acoustic set on the annual Kiss Kruise. Frehley joined Kiss for four songs, including “Nothing to Lose” and “Rock and Roll All Nite.” The group also performed their cover of the Rolling Stones’ “2000 Man” – which Frehley sang on 1979’s Dynasty – as well as Hello’s “New York Groove,” which Frehley covered on his 1978 solo debut.
Prior to their rendition of “Nothin’ to Lose,” Frehley said, “This is great… this is so great. Thank you guys for inviting me up.

Less than a week after losing yet another set of lawyers, Bill Cosby was told Friday by the District Attorney that put him behind bars for the 2004 rape of Andrea Constand that his latest sprawling attempt to get a new trial, a new judge or out of prison altogether should be Doa.

Nicki Minaj is no stranger to drama in the spotlight and the latest in her long history of verbal sparring-mates (Miley, Mariah, Iggy, oh my) is none other than rapper and reality TV star Remy Ma.
Thursday night, Minaj, 34, gave fans a whole set of new tunes to groove to when she dropped three new songs with a plethora of responses to Remy Ma’s Internet-breaking diss track “ShETHER.”
Remy Ma, 36 — whose nearly 7-minute chart-topping diss track nearly broke the Internet — has yet to strike back, but Minaj gave her a deadline of 72 hours.

Avicii used his set at Tomorrowland this weekend as a platform to debut new music – that much was to be expected. What we didn’t see coming, however, was that he’d gradually begin to adopt tropical house as his style of choice.
Near the end of his set, Avicii premiered three IDs with the working titles “Some Nights,” “The Way It Should” and “Nothing To Lose,” and all of them had distinctly tropical elements. While a slide towards the genre could be traced back to his last couple of releases, it seems to be a bold statement for such a mainstager to abandon their usual style in favor of something so relatively obscure.
That said, characteristic of artists like Kygo, Thomas Jack and Will Sparks, tropical house has grown in popularity substantially over the past few years. Being that Avicii’s sound has leaned more towards acoustic instrumentals in...

I dunno how to properly gauge this first clip from Ralph Ziman’s “Kite,” the adaptation of the popular Japanese anime about a teen hitgirl out for revenge. There’s something a bit off about it, but hey, it’s only a minute-plus clip, and the rest of the movie could be better. They sure went for gruesome, what with the bullet-through-the-hand gag and all. The thing with the old lady was just downright awkward, though. For some reason, I thought they had shot this thing in another language then dubbed it into English, but no? Never Underestimate a Girl with Nothing to Lose. Based on the groundbreaking, cult classic anime, Kite tells the story of Sawa (India Eisley, “The Secret Life of the American Teenager,” Underworld: Awakening), a young woman living in a corrupt society where crime and gangs terrorize the streets. “It’s good. Our priority for the season is to improve, and to improve you need difficult games. We take on the best team twice in fifteen days. In its set-up, new indie action-thriller Vehicle 19 sounds undeniably intriguing. It tells the story of a man who is given the wrong car as the result of a mix-up with the rental agency and, after deciding that he doesn’t mind the change in model, discovers a gun, a cell phone, and a tied-up prisoner in the trunk.
You might not have picked up on this from watching the first two international trailers, but the experiment taking place in the film is that the camera never leaves the car (even though the protagonist might). Presumably, this is intended to communicate some kind of message about the protagonist being irrevocably tied to his unwelcome fate, but it’s a challenging choice that may succeed or fail depending on how well the director – and cinematographer – are able to pull it off.

First off, there was the choice of which of Lee Child’s 14 Jack Reacher adventures then published would be used for the character’s debut film - but we’ll get to that later. By far, the news that caused the greatest fuss was the casting of the man who would fill his not so small shoes.
Casting Jack Reacher was always going to be a nightmare. The character’s physical appearance, which had been repeatedly played up in Child’s pages was simply impossible to replicate. It could be argued then that...

Ever since breaking onto the music scene in 2003 with their self-titled “debut” album after a lesser known name change, alternative rockers Billy Talent have been surpassing expectations with every new release. Maturing with grace much like a fine wine, their fourth release Dead Silence is no different, being some of their most mesmerizing work yet.
Abandoning the Led Zeppelin album naming convention of just numbering each CD – i.e. Billy Talent, Billy Talent II, Billy Talent III – Dead Silence improves upon the trademark Billy Talent sound in every way possible.
As an album overall, the most prevalent reaction to hit me was “Dead Silence sounds exactly like every other Billy Talent CD,” which I’ve emphatically relished about every other album as well. Billy Talent has found a dynamic sound which is both technically envied and pleasingly unique, perfecting their method with an “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it” mentality.
