I’ve written elsewhere that I had become in more recent years quite jaded by the big crossover event, or the ‘buy 36 books to get the whole picture’ event. Good storytelling was being jettisoned in favour of editorial control, and the industry as a whole was suffering. Then DC started doing these type of comics, well, better. I have been really enjoying Year of the Villain, Tales from the Dark Multiverse, Event Leviathan and DCeased. Not perfect, but solid entertainment. So, what can Marvel do? Can they raise their game? Seemed like this relaunch of the 2099 universe, with specials and mini-series galore, was a good place to start. And what better place to start than this Alpha issue, where it all kicks off. Let’s take a look.

Deadpool and Deadpool 2 were smash hits in the box office and allowed for Marvel to break boundaries with what could be done with superhero flicks at the time, including allowing for R-rated films. Both movies have memorable characters that had enough screen time to build upon.

Each character fits nicely into a specific role, both in the movies and as character concepts. Since they fit well, we can look at what house they’d be sorted into if they attended Hogwarts from the Harry Potter series. Each sorting will be explained based on several factors, though it will mainly be focused on actions in the movies. Feel free to post your own lists in the comments, and include the characters we couldn’t, like Ajax, Peter, and Juggernaut.

'America's Got Talent': 7 Performers Make the Judges' Cuts After Intense First Round of Competition!
The America's Got Talent auditions are over and on Tuesday, the real competition began! A slew of singers, comedians, dancers, acrobats and entertainers who made it past the first stage of the season came back to try and wow the judges all over again.
While the bar was set extremely high by some truly amazing performers, the panel -- along with guest judge Chris Hardwick -- had to choose the seven acts that impressed them the most. While the eliminations were tough -- and often surprising -- the performers who are going on to the next round worked hard to get there.
Here's a look at the seven acts that made it through the first night of the Judge Cuts round.

Nearly every episode of America's Got Talent this season has included a magic act that is utterly mind-blowing, and with the show heading into the next round of competition the illusions are just going to get even crazier.
With this in mind, magician Eric Jones is kicking things off with some breathtaking close-up magic and a smashing performance that the judges aren't soon to forget.
While the talented performer got enough votes to move on following his audition earlier this season, judge Simon Cowell criticized Jones for not having enough stage presence. Jones said he took "all of your comments into consideration," and decided to come back with a more forceful second appearance.

The actors whose role in a film was shot, but chopped out of the final cut...
Yep, I know. I’ve read lists like this too, and I know that Eric Stoltz was cut out of Back To The Future. If it’s all well and good, I’ll leave that example out.
See related Alien 5 to ignore Alien 3 and Alien: Resurrection Alien 5: will it ever happen?
What I’ve tried to find here is a mix of reasonably known and less known instances of an actor being cut out of a film after they’ve filmed sequences for it. I’ve also tried to get to the reason they were left out as well.
Whilst all this may still sound like an exercise in clickbait, being cut out of a production does have a consequence beyond ego hurting a bit. For the side effect...

In some ways, Trainspotting is not the type of movie that begs a sequel. While in Panama for the film festival, one of the notable people I met was Jorge Ameer.
Jorge left his home in Panama at age 16 in the late 1980s due to political unrest and civil instability. The country’s dictator and drug king Noriega was recruiting young men to fight in his military army as the looming confrontation with the United States approached. In 1989, the United States invaded Panama under the name of “Just Cause” ousted the Panamanian dictator.
Living in Los Angeles, at the age of 18, he was selected to participate in the Walt Disney College Program. He worked in the marketing departments of New Line Cinema, Paramount and Columbia Pictures. In motion picture development, Jorge worked as a story analyst for Richard Gere's production company and Wendy Finerman's productions at Tri Star Pictures in the early nineties and the now defunct Fries Entertainment.
He also tried his hand at acting and was in Gramercy's "Panther" and "Tales from the Hood", HBO's "Social Friction Fables" New Line's "Friday" along with other cameos and supporting roles. He co-starred opposite award winning actor Matthew Leitch (Star of “Aka”) in the carnival romp "Sabor Tropical".
Ameer served as the coordinator for the 1988 Latino Entertainment Industry Conference and as a member of the advisory board of the Methodfest Film Festival. He was also the U.S. representative for the Barcelona G & L Film Festival and a film programmer for the Palm Springs G & L Film Festival.
In October 1997, he founded and executive directed The Continental Film Festival, better known as the first American Independent film festival held overseas on the island of Contadora, off the Gulf of Panama. There is where his film career actually began. He served as a festival coordinator during the very beginnings of the Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival founded by Edward James Olmos and Marlene Dehmer.
At these festivals, Ameer helped in the selection of many foreign features. After noticing a lack of recognition of foreign and independent gay themed films released theatrically, he founded the International Gay Film Awards, the Glitter Awards (2001-2008), at that time the only award show of its kind.
In 1997, Ameer also started Hollywood Independents, a distribution company which launched with the theatrical release of "California Myth" starring Tyron Powers Jr.
Thereafter, the company has released such titles as the Jamaican/American co-production "Klash" starring Jazmine Guy, "Eastside" starring Mario Lopez, "Tequila Body Shots" starring Joey Lawrence, "Poor White Trash" starring Jamie Pressley, Jason London, William Devane and Sean Young, Spain's Academy Awards Winning film (Goya Winner) "I will Survive" (Sobrevivire), and "Hotel Room" from the director of "Nico & Dani". Other releases include his film "The Singing Forest", and "Junked" starring Thomas Jane (star of "The Mist", "Punisher" and the popular HBO series "Hung") and Jordan Ladd (star of "Cabin Fever", "Hostel 2").
Jorge Ameer's theatrical distribution company Hollywood Independents International opened its theatrical distribution operations in Central and South America in 2006 with the theatrical release of "Grande Ecole" a film by Robert Salis. The French film was censored and banned in Panama due to its explicit sexual content
Ameer took a trip to Panama to denounce the banning of this film. After outrage was expressed by the Panamanian press, the film opened successfully in Panama. It opened number one at the Alhambra-Plus Transistmica beating studio films "Night at the Museum" and "Deja Vu". It broke box office records locally, playing in theaters for eight weeks.
On January 26, 2009 the Library of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences Fairbanks Center for Motion Picture study invited Mr. Ameer's to have his screenplays be a permanent part of "The Core Collection". The screenplays in this collection are made accessible for research purposes; students, filmmakers, writers and actors are among the patrons.
In April 2011, Mr. Ameer started his own film series in Panama called Jorge Ameer presents Cine Serie Independiente, a showcase to promote and exhibit high profile award winning independent and foreign films in Panama.
He brought in Aluzio Abranche's controversial incestuous drama of brotherly love "From Beginning to End" (“Do Comeco ao Fim”), Andre Shortell's "Psych 9" starring Sara Foster & Cary Elwes and Karee Andrew's "Altitude".
During the film presentations, directors presented their work to Panamanian audiences in person and live via skype. This is the first time in Panama's cinema history technology has allowed local cinephiles the opportunity to interact with award winning filmmakers virally before and after their film presentations.
Unfortunately, the presenting cinema and only theatre exhibitor to support independent films - the Alhambra Theatres- closed the following year, 2012, due to financial troubles. It was the last of a series of vintage stand-alone cinemas constructed during the boom of single screen theatres and drive-ins in Panama.
There are currently only two theatre chain exhibitors (Cinepolis & Cinemark) operating in Panama. Both chains have their multiplex cinemas located throughout today's popular mega malls.
Several months after his film series, Mr. Ameer produced the opening night after-party to the October 2011 edition of Screamfest, the world's premiere horror film festival based in Hollywood, California. The event was held at the Hollywood Renaissance Hotel. The event brought luminaries of the genre such as Paranormal Activity's Oren Peli, "Saw" and "Insidious" director James Wan, as well as "Grease", "Summer Lovers", "Blue Lagoon" director Randal Kleiser and "Firestarters", "Class of 1984" director Mark Lester to name a few celebrity attendees. With a seance theme, over 400 votive candles were used to create the atmosphere. In addition over one hundred skulls, the Screamfest symbol, were featured as centerpieces and part of the morbid "look" throughout the event. A well-lit coffin surrounded by neon lights was featured in the gift room where guests retrieved their gift bags from the open casket.
Mr. Ameer has authored, produced, and directed the theatrical features "The Truth Within", "Strippers","The Singing Forest", "Contadora is for lovers", "The House of Adam", "The Dark Side of Love","Sabor Tropical", "D'Agostino". All projects released theatrically through Hollywood Independents.
Ameer has produced, written and directed countless 35mm comedic shorts films to name a few "My Straight Boyfriend", "Popcorn & Coke", "Uninhibited", "Midnight Snack", "Tease" now available on DVD as a compilation of shorts called “Straight Men & the Men Who Love Them”.
This collection has been so successful that he has executive produced, programmed and curated two more such programs “Straight Men & the Men Who Love Them 2” and the upcoming “Straight Men & the Men Who Love Them 3”. The latest compilation of shorts is a collection of international shorts curated from the Cannes Film Festival Short Film Corner.
Ameer made a documentary "Classic Hollywood Cinemas" an in depth look at the old Hollywood movie palaces, their historic and preservation value and impact.
He's also produced and arranged the publishing of the historical and award winning first ever "Guide to Gay & Lesbian Film which has won many book awards for its detail, educational and historical contribution to independent gay and lesbian films released in theaters.
In addition to filmmaking, within the exhibition industry, Jorge Ameer was the last person to re-open the historic Vogue theatre in Hollywood as a movie theatre to showcase independent films. Films such as "Nico and Dani" (Tla Releasing) and "Just one time" from the now defunct Cowboy Releasing played at this theatre. The resurgence of film exhibition at the Vogue was short lived due to alleged hauntings at the venue where a paranormal research group leased the theatre from Mann theaters to set up shop as headquarters for their research group.
Jorge Ameer's "The Dark Side of Love " was the last film to shoot at the Regent Showcase Theatre in Hollywood prior to its closing. "The Regent Showcase Theatre, originally the Gordon Theatre (1938), is one of the older art houses in Los Angeles until its closing in May 2009.
A human rights activist, Ameer has spent most of his career creating controversial, cutting edge trivial stories with thought provoking subject matters to challenge audiences from the stereotypical social conventions and outdated traditional values which detract from enhancing the global human experience.
He is currently working on his latest film project “Oasis” to be shot in Panama during the month of August. Oasis” is a twisted thriller set in the backdrop of Panama's paradise its about a newlywed American who decides to visit a friend while in Panama on business, to rekindle their friendship to prove his love to his wife by killing him.
Also, on the current issue of Scream Magazine issue # 35, the worlds largest horror film magazine, his “Medusa” has received with extensive coverage. The film is currently playing in theaters in the U.S. through Regal Cinemas after having its world premiere at the Cannes Film Market.
“Medusa” had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival Marche along with a horror short he starred in called "Find Pauletta" in the Short Film Corner. This was the first time a Panamanian has had two films in two different programs of the Cannes Film Festival.
VFX for “Medusa” was by Jeremy Vanneman who has worked on many studio films including the upcoming “Ghostbusters”, “Guardians of the Galaxy”, “San Andreas”, etc. “Medusa” also has a celebrity cameo by 80's hearthrob William McNamara.
Jorge is the only Panamanian filmmaker who writes, direct, produces and own his own production and distribution company in Hollywood.
Jorge Ameer has also pioneered and procured the opening of the first high school film program at one of the oldest (110 years) and most prestigious private high schools in Panama, the Pan American Institute (Instituto Panamericano) in Panama City.
The film program curriculum was designed by Ameer and approved by the Ministry of Education.
It launched in 2015 with the first class schedule to graduate in 2017.
In his own words:
The high school film program was an idea that started because of the lack of opportunity and education in film that I myself had when growing up. I loved film so much; film was my babysitter during my childhood years. Whenever I wasn't in school I was at the movie theatre watching several films a day until my mom picked me up from the theatre. I attended the Pan American Institute (Instituto Panamericano) from kindergarten through graduation 1989.
Decades later as a filmmaker, distributor and film buyer, I approached the principal of the high school with the high risk idea of starting a film school program for an industry that even though in its infancy I knew it would grow leaps and bounds if those who pushed hard enough would stick with it to create some semblance of film opportunities and production here in Panama. Ten years later after designing a very thorough program that includes script writing, production, distribution, film marketing, campaign strategy, film fund and grant writing as well as crowdfunding to use donors as ambassadors to promote the film, the Ministry of Education approved the program.
Last year, the first students, approximately 27 brave souls, risking the uncertainty the entertainment field has to offer, weathered the scrutiny of their parents to become the pioneering and prototype Class of 2017. This Class, now in the 11th grade, is gearing up to produce its first set of shorts for the Ipa Student Film Festival. The first film festival of its kind, it showcases the works of these film students with the goal of creating filmmakers from an early stage who will graduate with films reels in their areas of interest which will show their talents to prospective universities, scholarship programs and other international student competitions.
I got the Ministry of Industry and Commerce Film Department called Di Cine in conjunction with the Panama Film Commission to fund the projections of these works which will take place as an outdoor cinema event on the school grounds. on Friday, August 5 at 7pm. Provided the students meet the minimum Gpa, they will be required to do internships placed and provided through the Film Commission in conjunction with other private film entities such as the Tvn Channel 2, one of Panama's major television networks as well as The Panama Canal Chanel among other companies offering opportunities for these students to practice their craft prior to graduating.
Currently, under construction, is an upcoming state of the art film lab studio facility providing students with the opportunity to develop their talents. Also a new auditorium will host film events and eventually the high school graduation ceremony.

I was gutted by the news shared by playwright/producer Jeff Cohen as he and I walked our dogs in Riverside Park early this morning. The Thin White Duke was no more. I struggled to understand the implications of losing a music hero. Rushing home, resigned to reality, I watched his two new videos, the one above and the ablum's title track which I featured on this website last week, both from his 28th studio album, ★(Blackstar), released this past week on January 8th, 2016, the date of Bowie's 69th birthday. As I watched "Lazarus" again, it all made sense.
"Lazarus" is clearly Bowie's epitaph, his final prophetic performance on this mortal coil...
Look up here / I'm in heaven I've got scars that can't be seen I've got drama that can't be stolen Everybody knows me now...
The coins on his eyes, the pallor of his skin, his frail body wrapped in a fashionalbe shroud.

July 14th may not have a lot of genre-related titles arriving on DVD and Blu-ray, but the films making their home entertainment debuts this week are a rather stellar bunch nonetheless. For anyone who may have missed two of the best indie films this year in theaters—Ex Machina and It Follows—you’ll have a chance to catch up with both this coming Tuesday.
Scream Factory is also keeping busy this week with their high-def release of Philippe Mora’s cult classic, Howling II: Your Sister is a Werewolf, and they also have two double feature Blu-rays coming out as well. Severin Films has put together an extensive special edition release of the recent documentary Lost Soul, which follows the troubled production of Richard Stanley’s Island of Doctor Moreau and looks pretty incredible and for all you X-Men fans out there, the Rogue Cut version of Days...

Our look at underappreciated films of the 80s continues, as we head back to 1988...
Either in terms of ticket sales or critical acclaim, 1988 was dominated by the likes of Rain Man, Who Framed Roger Rabbit and Coming To America. It was the year Bruce Willis made the jump from TV to action star with Die Hard, and became a star in the process.
It was the year Leslie Nielsen made his own jump from the small to silver screen with Police Squad spin-off The Naked Gun, which sparked a hugely popular franchise of its own. Elsewhere, the eccentric Tim Burton scored one of the biggest hits of the year with Beetlejuice, the success of which would result in the birth of Batman a year later. And then there was Tom Cruise, who managed to make a drama about a student-turned-barman into a $170m hit, back when $170m was still an...

If there’s one thing I love, it’s 1970s made-for-tv horror films. I remember sitting in front of the television as a kid and watching a plethora of films such as Gargoyles, Bad Ronald, Satan’s School for Girls, Horror at 37,000 Feet, Devil Dog: Hound of Hell, Scream Pretty Peggy, Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark, Moon of the Wolf and The Initiation of Sarah just to name a few. Some of those are better than others, but all were fun.
When I think back, there have been some legendary names associated with small screen horrors. Genre masters John Carpenter (Halloween), Steven Spielberg (Jaws), Wes Craven (Nightmare on Elm Street), Tobe Hooper (Texas Chainsaw Massacre) and Joseph Stefano (Psycho) all took shots at television...

Tim Burton's Batman was released 25 years ago. Ryan looks back at how it overcame a media backlash to become a defining 80s blockbuster...
Feature
There may have been a point, in late 1988, where Tim Burton began to wonder whether he'd bitten off more than he could chew.
Sure, the 30-year-old director had made feature films before - namely Pee-Wee's Big Adventure and Beetlejuice - but those films were relatively low-budget. Small-scale. Made outside the glare of public and Hollywood studio scrutiny.
Batman, on the other hand, was being put together with a blinding media spotlight trained on it. Warner Bros had set aside somewhere around $30m to adapt DC Comics' beloved Caped Crusader for the silver screen, and both journalists and fans were following every step of its production with keen interest.
Most worryingly, as production on Batman got underway in October 1988, a vocal proportion of those fans were decidedly unhappy.

The end of the workweek was a night of new beginnings and a final farewell on primetime last night. The beginning was the return of Unforgettable (1.0/4) for the last six episodes of its second season on CBS. The Sony TV-produced procedural starring Poppy Montgomery and Dylan Walsh is in some ways, the show that will never die – having cancelled once and then brought back to life again in summer 2012 with a new pick up. Last night, however, Unforgettable took a hit in its latest return. Already renewed for a third season set to start in June, the show fell 23% last night from its Sunday July 28 Season 2 debut of last year. While even with its last show on September 8 last year, last night’s Unforgettable actually saw a small 4% total viewership rise from its Season 2 debut to an audience of 7.50 million. Back with their first originals since March 14, Hawaii Five-0 (1.3/5) and...

Bob Casale, the guitarist for the band Devo, has died. He was 61. Casale succumbed Monday to "conditions that lead to heart failure," according to his brother and band mate Gerald Casale, who posted the news on the band's Facebook page. "As an original member of Devo, Bob Casale was there in the trenches with me from the beginning," Gerald wrote. "He was my levelheaded brother, solid performer and talented audio engineer, always giving more than he got." Devo was formed in 1972 after band members were inspired to make music from personally witnessing the Kent State massacre in 1970, according to Rolling Stone.

Family Plot

USA, 1976
There are some who opt for Alfred Hitchcock’s British years as his finest, taking into account his earliest silent features through Jamaica Inn in 1939. On the other hand, many regard the peak years in America as the Master of Suspense’s finest era, with films from Rebecca in 1940 to Marnie in 1964. Both have valid points to make and there are unquestionably several great works during each phase of the filmmaker’s career. Few, however, would rank Hitchcock’s final four films among his best. In a way, this is unfair, their lowly stature no doubt due to the masterworks that preceded them; with the films Hitchcock made before, the bar was set unassailably high. Taken apart from the imposing excellence of these earlier classics, these concluding films are solid movies.

We first found out last year that members of Arcade Fire were big Devo fans when they performed “Uncontrollable Urge” at the Crossing Brooklyn Ferry music festival. Last night, the entire band once again performed the track from Devo’s 1978 debut album Q: Are We Not Men? Despite the limitations of what must’ve been a heavy and completely inconvenient mask, Butler seemed to handle himself just fine. You can check out the live concert video above....

Actress Karen Black.
I grew up hearing about Karen Black as far back as I can remember. She would pop up on television and my mother would point her out as a compatriot from their college days at Northwestern University, a mixture of pride and wistfulness in her voice as the memories came back. When I finally got the opportunity to sit down with Karen during the summer of 2007, the venerable actress had turned playwright, with a well-received L.A. production of "The Missouri Waltz," a musical for which she penned the book. Black was alternately eccentric, passionate, grounded and fascinating during our chat, her obvious intelligence shining through the entire proceedings.
“Black brings to all her roles a freewheeling combination of raunch and winsomeness,” Time magazine wrote about her in 1975. “Sometimes she is kittenish. At other times she has an overripe quality that makes her look like the kind...

And the beat goes on. Former Devo drummer Alan Myers may have died after a battle with brain cancer on Monday, June 24, but his legacy as part of the "Whip It" band lives on. He was 58. Myers, who was the third -- and arguably most well-known -- drummer for the American New Wave band, joined the group in 1976 during the band's heyday, and helped anchor the beats of some of its biggest albums, including 1976's Q: Are We Not Men? According to reports from friends, colleagues, and former bandmates, drummer Alan Myers has died. Myers, Devo’s “human metronome” during the band’s commercial and creative peak, had been battling cancer. Appearing on every Devo LP released between the band’s full-length debut, Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo!, and 1984’s Shout, Myers was recruited to join the band following the departure of its second drummer, Jim Mothersbaugh. Eschewing the motorik-inspired patterns of the band’s new-wave and post-punk peers, Myers’ playing on early Devo releases is alternately straightforward and slyly complex, an analog cog within ...

Recently, I got a chance to talk with writer-director David Guy Levy, who’s second feature film (after A Love Affair Of Sorts), Would You Rather, recently came out on VOD [my review can be found here].
The film stars a cavalcade of interesting actors, including Brittany Snow, Eddie Steeples, John Heard, Jonny Coyne, Jeffrey Combs, Enver Gjokaj, and Sasha Grey. The premise is simple: a bunch of varied personalities, all in dire straits for myriad reasons, play a twisted game of “Would You Rather?” that decides their fate.
Levy is also a successful producer, with Terri and August on the resume. Check out our interview below, and before/after/during, be sure to see the movie at SundanceNOW!

Killer Joe (Lionsgate) William Friedkin’s film of Tracy Letts’ off-Broadway hit about a family of Texas trailer park cretins (Emile Hirsch, Juno Temple, Thomas Haden Church, Gina Gershon) who hire a cop-cum-hitman (Matthew McConaughey) to take out their troublesome mother, then foolishly cross him, is a stinging satire, given double-barreled audacity by Friedkin’s sure, and fearless, directorial hand. Earning its Nc-17 rating in spades, “Killer Joe” reminds us that daring, frank material like this is why movies exist in the first place. McConaughey gives the performance of his career, hopefully redefined after this. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Featurettes; Commentary by Friendkin; Trailer. Widescreen. One more example of a successful Kickstarter campaign, Tony Pemberton’s Are We Not Men? – the authorized docu on Devo has been in the works for the better part of three years, and is now set for a 2013 premiere. Pemberton’s history with Park City is limited to a single item – a narrative drama called Beyond the Ocean (Sundance ’00). I really like Spider-Man, so I was very very pleased that Venom caught me. I'm wearing a Scarlet Spider mask and a Miles Morales shirt. That's so much Spider-Man! I decided that I would find and take pictures of all Spider-Men that I could find, which joyously lead me to a bunch of kids who were at Comic Con because they are fans of Spider-Man. Yes. I was happy. Highlights from Day 3 include: Pac Man! Tons of Star Wars on the floor, Court of Owls, Lady Avengers, Battlestar Galactica Season 3, Arrow!, a few Venture Bros repping, Dr Who finally shows up, Mario brothers, Mega Man, Karl Fredrickson, Devo, Dark Knight Returns Robin, other Robins and a Kilingon. Con was great, I'll miss my Spider-Men Love, Da7e...

What started out as a couple of art nerds creating satirical works and performances became one of the most wonderfully subversive, creative, and challenging bands in recent history. The boys of Devo and their musical de-evolution assault across the world spoke to director Tony Pemberton — the filmmaker behind a new project that just reached its funding goal on Kickstarter. Are We Not Men? — named after Devo's first album — was produced in cooperation with the band. The project was developed over the course of three years and has finally reached the post-production phase — just in time for the festival circuit. "Although the band has been notoriously secretive for nearly 4 decades, they have granted us unprecedented full-access to their personal...

The Today show’s interview with Charlie Sheen this morning offered first glimpse at his new sitcom, FX’s Anger Management, which premieres June 28. Two images from the set of the show flashed during the interview: one featuring Sheen, who plays a troubled anger management therapist, and Selma Blair, who plays his own therapist; and one with Sheen and Shawnee Smith, who plays his ex-wife, in a kitchen setting. During the interview, Sheen said he had planned to do a documentary chronicling his meltdown last spring with video material from his Torpedo Of Truth tour and the events that preceded it but ruled against it after finding the footage “cringeable.” Sheen said “I didn’t recognize part of who that was,” adding that the material could make for “a nice case study one day.” Sheen admitted he still has “a little bit of bitterness” toward the show that fired him,...

Well, we are not Devo, although that famed New Wave band was inspired by this wonderfully twisted 1933 science fiction-horror film in their song, “Are We Not Men?—We Are Devo!” Similarly, Danny Elfman and Oingo Boingo used parts of the “Law” in their song, “No Spill Blood.” The above mantra is used in the picture by a group of, well, unusual beings.
Made by Paramount to compete with Universal’s string of successful horror movies, and directed by Erle C. Kenton, Island of Lost Souls is nothing short of a masterpiece.

Since our first edition was so popular, AfterElton.com now brings you Part 2 of “Hot Men of Fall TV”, where we take a look at a whole new crop of sexy actors from the upcoming fall season. This bunch is particularly “gay-friendly”, featuring as it does several actors who in many cases made their names portraying gay characters.
It bears mentioning again, however, that the network’s upcoming programs are sadly lacking when it comes to representing actors of color. In a television climate that’s seeing such great strides in the depiction of Glbt characters, we can only hope network executives won’t lose sight of the fact that boosting the number of racial minorities on the small screen remains an important goal.
Michael Arden, The Good Wife (CBS)
Before turning to TV and movies, openly gay actor Michael Arden was a successful Broadway star with a string of well-received performances under his belt.

The Fall TV Season presentations for all the new network shows take place this week with the fourth announced today. Here's a full breakdown of which concepts have made the final list over on CBS.
Still faring well, though not as indomitable as it used to be, CBS made headlines more this year for the antics of "Two and a Half Men" star Charlie Sheen than any of its other shows. With Ashton Kutcher now replacing Sheen, the new look 'Men' is staying in the same time slot and you can bet the network is desperately hoping it'll perform as well.
In any case, CBS is actually making some significant changes this year in terms of scheduling. Most notably the new J.J. Abrams series "Person of Interest" is getting the highly coveted Thursday 9pm slot which has been the home of the original "CSI" for the past decade,...

Two and a Half Men is staying put and CSI is getting the boot.
CBS unveiled its fall scheduled keeping Big Bang Theory on Thursdays and shifts veteran CSI from its longtime Thursday night anchor slot.
The network announced several new drams. J.J. Abrams’ Person of Interest stars Jim Caviezel and Michael Emerson as an ex-cia agent and a billionaire who team to stop crimes. Interest gets to take over the coveted CSI spot on Thursdays. CBS also shifted The Good Wife to Sundays. “To move CSI out of that time period you need big guns and we do,” says CBS entertainment president Nina Tassler.

Here we are with the last Criterion Collection new release announcement for 2010, and there are a couple amazing releases to talk about.
Last week we uncovered that Criterion was in fact prepared to finally release David Cronenberg’s Videodrome on Blu-ray on December 7th. This is the last of the Amazon pre-order announced titles that forced Criterion to reveal their cards a little early. I still haven’t seen the film, and I’m pretty glad that I waited, so that I can see this film in all of it’s high def insanity. While I’m sure there is something charming about watching the film on VHS, given the material, watching a recent fan edit trailer in HD, makes me really excited for the Blu-ray. The cover doesn’t necessarily change up the design much, aside from the color bars on the spine logo.
Now to the main course.

Superhero Hype reports that Joss Whedon’s already highly anticipated (thanks to a certain comic-con appearance by a few of its cast) The Avengers is to begin shooting in February 2011.
The Paramount Pictures and Marvel Studios film is the most ambitious superhero flick to date, so the long gap between that date and the movie’s May 4, 2012 premiere could be seen as a cautious choice in the event that anything goes awry, such as one of its many high-profile cast members being embroiled in a scheduling conflict. Chris Evans, Robert Downey, Jr. and Chris Hemsworth are obviously the most crucial to the film as the Big Three, playing Captain America, Iron Man and Thor respectively, but all eyes should be kept on Downey, Jr. as the man is attached to not only the Sherlock Holmes sequel, but also Disney’s Oz, The Great And Powerful and Alfonso Cuarón’s Gravity,...

Rushes Soho Short Festival, London
London's film-making quarter becomes a giant screening room, and a level playing field for creatives from around the world or around the corner. Veterans of the event, now in its 12th year, will know what to expect: short films of all descriptions, professional and amateur, in various categories. Except this time there's even more of it: 170 films from 23 countries. For the classiest stuff, head for the competition screenings to see quality mini-dramas starring the likes of Robert Pattinson (The Summer House) and Jenny Agutter (Koda), plus documentaries, music videos and animation. Plenty of free stuff includes the Straight 8 challenge (shoot a short straight on to a single reel of Super 8, then view the results with an audience), a street party, and sessions on how to get into film-making.

When you purchase a ticket to go see a film titled Robin Hood, you expect certain things. The primary thing you expect is a sense of adventure — and recent films have proven that you can make a film both dark, as Ridley Scott has done with his latest picture, and adventurous as well. You expect to see the camaraderie of Robin Hood and his Merry Men, and the sweeping romantic tale of Robin and Maid Marion. The words Robin Hood evoke images of gallantry, playful thievery, rebellion, and fun.
Ridley Scott’s latest film is none of these things. It is a dour, sleepy mess that loses the romantic setting of Nottingham to a faux-realistic historical context. It is very apparent through the 2.5-hour running time that Scott desired to make another Kingdom of Heaven, not the tale of Robin Hood, and he fails on both counts.
As I mentioned...

Among the stars of the upcoming new movie Repo Chick - Alex Cox's so-called "official non-sequel" to his 1984 sci-fi cult classic Repo Man - is Us actor/writer/producer Danny Arroyo.
The film, which premiered at the Venice Film Festival in September, is co-produced by David Lynch's production company (Eraserhead, Dune, The Elephant Man, Twin Peaks) and produced by Daren Hicks and Simon Tams (producers of Batman: Dead End, Searchers 2.0, Hunter Prey).
The official synopsis of the project is: "Against the background of the credit crunch and the subprime mortgage crisis in the Us, where repossessions of homes, cars and other forms of property is at a new high, the repo business has expanded to everything from boats, houses, aeroplanes, small nations...children."

Spike Jonze has adapted Maurice Sendak's beloved children's book Where the Wild Things Are into a movie that isn't for kids. Yes, its lead is a young boy who goes on a mythical journey filled with lovable two-story-tall monsters but make no mistake Wild Things isn't for the under-10 set. How that translates into box-office dollars will be very interesting. Tracking suggests the movie opens to around $30 million with most of the money coming from the young hipster crowd of 17-34 year olds. The numbers also suggest that parents have gotten the message and are unlikely to bring their children to the theater.
