    Pygmalion, Indian-style

Johnny & His Talking Doll, a ventriloquism act, tour around, assisted by Rosemary Braganza, who is in love with Johnny. Johnny develops severe personality issues, personifying Urvashi (the doll) and pretty much falling in love with her, which (naturally) makes Rosemary a bit jealous. Lovely shots of Goa, and well-integrated songs. Well acted by "Johnny." An interesting outlook on freedom of speech, political expression, and feminism -- as Rosemary eventually becomes Urvashi, gradually losing her agency.

    A Masterpiece...

Gautam Ghose's 'Gudia' is a milestone in film-making. One of the Gems Indian Cinema has produced in Modern Era. Screened in the Un Certain Regard section at the 1997 Cannes Film Festival, Ghose brings out a story that touches your heart.

'Gudia' is about 2 ventriloquists who earn their meagre living through this talent, and a life-size doll they affectionately named Urvashi, in a coastal village in Goa, India. When the mentor falls ill, the student takes up the job and thus, begins his journey with the Doll. Gautam Ghose makes a heartbreaking/charming and a Masterpiece of a film!

'Gudia' is in-tact with memorable performances! Mithun Chakraborty is fantastic. The legendary star of Indian Cinema plays one of the most difficult roles with rare understanding. Mithun, was, is and will always be my all-time favorite. Nandana Sen delivers a wonderful performance. Pran is perfect in a cameo. Mohan Agashe is flawless in his part.

'Gudia' is a triumph... as mentioned from the start... 'A Masterpiece'! Two Big Enthusiastic Thumbs Up!
