Robert works in a shipping yard. When his father dies, he moves in with his Uncle's family in the country. He meets Millie, an odd young woman, and her protective older sister, Sarah, from a wealthy family.
Robert goes to work for the Thormans. He continues to get blamed for Carrie's pregnancy. James drags his feet about making an official proposal to Sarah. Mr. Thorman wants to get rid of Millie.
Carrie gives birth. Robert inherits more then expected. He and Sarah spend more time together. Dave grows more and more jealous and upset over Robert with tragic consequences.
