What Happened To The Cast Of Just Shoot Me?
Image
Even though it aired for seven seasons between 1997 and 2003, "Just Shoot Me!" isn't as appreciated as it should be. While it's rarely considered to be one of the best sitcoms of all time, "Just Shoot Me!" was a strong part of NBC's late-'90s sitcom lineup, following the lives of employees at a fashion magazine, namely the outspoken Maya (Laura San Giacomo) and her boss and father, Jack (George Segal).

The show's supporting cast also includes lots of great comedians, as well as a slew of guest stars like Joe Rogan, Jessica Walter, and Mark Hamill. It's even produced one of the greatest sitcom episodes of the past 30 years with "Slow Donnie," a season 3 episode featuring David Cross pre-"Arrested Development."

Whether you agree "Just Shoot Me!" is an underrated sitcom that you should check out or not, its cast has gone on to do quite a lot since the show ended.

The New Sitcom ‘Clean Slate’ Tells A Trans Story Right When It’s Needed the Most

SNL biographer James Andrew Miller claimed that season 50 will be the show's "toughest" yet, so it makes sense that Lorne Michaels and company would want to bring in fresh talent. Vulture confirmed that three writers have been brought on to make their debuts in the upcoming season.

Wendie Malick is replacing India de Beaufort as a new prosecutor for season 3. India de Beaufort leaving Night Court is not reflected in the season 2 finale. Malick's character Julianne Walters is Dan Fielding's ex.

Night Court season 3 confirms its replacement for the departing India de Beaufort, who played Olivia, and it's a familiar face. In May, in the latest cast change for the NBC reboot from showrunner Dan Rubin, de Beaufort shared that she would not be back as Assistant District Attorney Olivia Moore. Her departure is not apparent in the season 2 finale and will have to be addressed when season 3 airs. It left a big question mark for Night Court season 3, which is now partially answered.

TVLine confirms that sitcom veteran and two-time Emmy nominee Wendie Malick, who has previously guest-starred in two episodes, is joining the Night Court season 3 cast as a series regular in season...

Night Court Sets Season 3 Premiere Date, Adds Frasier Alum to Main Cast
Image
A familiar face is joining the cast of Night Court Season 3. Wendie Malick, who recurred in the first two seasons, has been upgraded to a series regular for the upcoming third season of the NBC sitcom, which is set to premiere on NBC on Tuesday, Nov. 19 at 8:30 p.m. Et/Pt.

Per Deadline, Malick will be reprising her role from the first two seasons as Julianne Walters, the new prosecutor for the night shift at the Manhattan Criminal Court. She is described as "a reformed convict" who is "a sophisticated, savvy woman and accomplished attorney who also knows how to make a shank out of a spoon." She is also the former love interest of Dan Fielding (John Larroquette). Malick's casting comes after it was revealed back in May 2024 that India de Beaufort had departed the series after two seasons and would not be returning as assistant district attorney/prosecutor Olivia Moore.

‘The Holdovers’ Plagiarism Controversy Alleges ‘Line by Line’ Similarity to a Black List Script: Report
Image
A new report in Variety lays out a detailed argument from British screenwriter Simon Stephenson alleging that the Oscar-nominated screenplay for Focus Features’ widely praised “The Holdovers” is extremely similar to his own 2013 Black List spec script, “Frisco” — and that, according to Stephenson, “Holdovers” director Alexander Payne likely read that script.

“The Holdovers” has only one credited screenwriter: David Hemingson, who was an entertainment lawyer before becoming a TV writer and producer in the late ’90s, working on shows such as “Just Shoot Me!,” “Kitchen Confidential,” “How I Met Your Mother,” and “Don’t Trust the B— in Apartment 23.” “The Holdovers” is his first produced feature.

IndieWire has reached out to Focus, WGA West, and to reps for Payne, Hemingson, and Stephenson, but has not yet received a response.

Stephenson is credited as a co-writer on Pixar’s “Luca” and received an “additional material” writing credit for “Paddington 2.” Working Title is developing his novel,...

2 Original Night Court Characters Will Return In Season 2 Of Reboot
Image
Season 2 of Night Court welcomes back original characters the Wheelers, who appeared in six episodes of the original Night Court. Brent Spiner and Annie O'Donnell will reprise their roles as the unlucky couple Bob and June Wheeler.

Night Court season 2 will continue an established trend, welcoming back memorable original characters. NBC's revival of the popular 1980s sitcom ended season 1 with Warfield reprising her role as Rosalind "Roz" Russell from the original Night Court. Warfield's return continued into the Night Court season 2, with Roz and Dan (John Larroquette) bonding after years apart over their mutual bewilderment of Judge Abby Stone (Melissa Rauch).

Speaking at the Television Critics Association’s Winter 2024 press tour where Screen Rant was in attendance, showrunner Dan Rubin revealed that Brent Spiner and Annie O’Donnell will reprise their roles as the couple Bob and June Wheeler for Night Court season 2. In the original, Bob and June appeared in six episodes overall.

'Just Shoot Me!' Is So Much More Than a Sitcom
Image
There is no doubt Steven Levitan knows how to make a great sitcom. Aside from creating one of the most beloved shows on network television, Modern Family, he also wrote and produced numerous other popular shows, like Frasier and Wings. In 1997, Levitan created Just Shoot Me!, which ran for seven seasons. Though the show regularly jumped around in the NBC lineup, it retained respectable ratings throughout its tenure. With a cast of unique characters and Levitan's scintillating dialogue, the series offered a hilarious look at office politics. Even though Just Shoot Me! takes place at the fictional fashion magazine Blush, almost everyone can relate to the workplace tension and co-worker disdain depicted in the show. But this light-hearted sitcom offers so much more than belly laughs. At its core, it is the epitome of the contradiction that is '90s feminism.

New ‘Suits’ Series in Development at NBCUniversal After USA Drama’s Streaming Success
Katherine Heigl, Dulé Hill, Rick Hoffman, Gabriel Macht, Amanda Schull, and Sarah Rafferty in Suits, avocats sur mesure (2011)
Following the unexpected streaming reign of USA’s legal drama “Suits,” which ended in 2019, series creator Aaron Korsh is developing a new series for the franchise, TheWrap has learned.

It would be the third “Suits” series after the one-season spin-off “Pearson,” which starred Gina Torres. The original series, whose cast included Gabriel Macht, Patrick J. Adams, Meghan Markle and Rick Hoffman, was set in New York City, while “Pearson” was set in Chicago.

Like the “NCIS” and “CSI” franchises, the new series would be set in a new city, possibly Los Angeles and feature an all-new cast with no recurring characters from the original series.

“Suits” is now Netflix’s twice-over most-streamed acquired program, having spent more time as No. 1 on Nielsen’s top 10 streaming programs list than any other title.

During the week of Sept. 4 to 10, “Suits” ranked No. 1 yet again on the market measurement firm’s top 10 list.

Laura San Giacomo became a household name with prominent roles in the edgy indie drama Sex, Lies, and Videotape and the iconic rom-com Pretty Woman. David Spade Was Told He Wouldn't Make It Without Chris Farley
Image
If you were around in the 1990s and of the age to watch comedy films, you've probably come across the films "Tommy Boy" and "Black Sheep" starring comedians David Space and the late Chris Farley. The two were a dynamic duo on "Saturday Night Live," with Spade often playing the straight man to Farley's wild and goofy antics. Farley died of a combination of a drug overdose and heart disease in December 1997, but while they were together, they were fabulously funny.

/Film's own Joe Garza did a list of Farley's top sketches from SNL, including Lunch Lady Land, the Chippendale's sketch with Patrick Swayze, and of course, Matt Foley, motivational speaker. That final one is one of the most ridiculously weird things I've seen on TV, and watching Spade try not to break as Farley's Foley talks about living in a van down by the river and throwing himself onto a table is pure joy.

The Larry Sanders Show Taught Steve Levitan How To Make Reboot Feel 'Real'
Image
What does it mean to be "real" in entertainment anymore? Reality television has been massively popular for some time now, but it follows a script or is heavily edited to tell a specific story. Many are quick to point out that professional wrestling is "fake," but you wouldn't go to the theater and call a production of a Shakespeare play or "Phantom of the Opera" on Broadway "fake." Even movies that are presented as "true crime" or "biopics" end up only being inspired by true events.

Or does "real" refer to the emotions that the audience feels as a result of watching a story unfold? Is there realness in various forms of art because those that consume it take something away from the experience that makes them feel seen or that they can then apply to their own lives?

These are pretty deep questions and concepts to explore in an...

The Daily Stream: Reboot Is A Witty And Humane Lampoon Of The TV Industry
Image
(Welcome to The Daily Stream, an ongoing series in which the /Film team shares what they've been watching, why it's worth checking out, and where you can stream it.)

The Series: "Reboot" (2022)

Where You Can Stream It: Hulu

The Pitch: Hannah Korman (Rachel Bloom), a writer who's hot off penning her breakout indie movie and will explain the film's hilariously Nsfw title to anyone who will listen, approaches Hulu with her pitch for reviving the hit 2000s sitcom "Step Right Up." Hannah's goal is to make the multi-camera comedy show edgier and more mature while bringing back the original cast, all of whom have gone their separate ways over the past 15 years. Their ranks include Reed Sterling (Keegan-Michael Key), who moved to New York to pursue a mostly-failed career in theater and film; Bree Marie Jensen (Judy Greer), who used to date Reed before leaving her acting career to marry...

Rebecca & Jerry Explain Relationship Challenges On The Real Love Boat
Image
Love may be exciting and new each week aboard The Real Love Boat, but hosts Jerry O'Connell and Rebecca Romijn got candid about the strain hosting the reality show and living aboard the ship can put on their marriage. The couple hosts this reality-based riff on The Love Boat, the popular sitcom-at-sea that aired from 1977 until 1986. Neither Rebecca nor Jerry are strangers to reality television, with Rebecca's resume stretching back to regular appearances on MTV's House of Style in the mid-'90s.

Speaking to Et Canada, the couple had comically conflicting opinions about the stress of living and working at sea for just over three weeks. "We literally never separated for 22 days," Rebecca said with exaggerated hand motions and an exasperated tone, to which her husband and star of Joe's Apartment added, "It was beautiful! It was gorgeous!" Rebecca pointed out that it was the most time the couple...

Steven Levitan Talks ‘Reboot,’ Navigating the Boundaries of Comedy and Whether He’d Revive ‘Modern Family’
Image
Steven Levitan is a veteran of the American sitcom, starting his career on long-running multi-cam “Wings,” creating NBC’s “Just Shoot Me!,” and co-parenting “Modern Family,” which won the Emmy for outstanding comedy series five years in a row.

On his latest project, however, Levitan looks at the sitcom through a different lens. “Reboot,” on Hulu, follows the cast of fictional early-aughts sitcom “Step Right Up” reuniting when, yes, Hulu decides to reboot it. There’s Reed (Keegan-Michael Key), pretentious capital A actor who never got his big break; Bree (Judy Greer), who returns from a small Nordic country after a royal divorce; Clay (Johnny Knoxville), a filthy stand-up comedian who can’t stay out of trouble; and Zack (Calum Worthy), a child actor who never really grew up. Meanwhile, the veteran comedy writers of the original show clash with the young, politically correct writers also on board, and the...

‘Reboot’ Review: Hilarious Hulu Comedy Deftly Skewers Generational Clashes, Workplace Dysfunction
Steven Levitan
Sitcom king Steven Levitan (from “Just Shoot Me!” to “Modern Family”) has done it again. The creator’s latest series, “Reboot,” is a hilarious vehicle for skewering generational clashes, writer’s room workplace dysfunction, cancel culture, actors’ bottomless neuroses and the sitcom industry that Levitan’s called home for three decades. Treated with affection and scalpel-like wit, “Reboot” doesn’t need a laugh track because over eight half-hour episodes on Hulu it’s consistently laugh-out-loud funny.

Here’s the premise, which on its face seems as recycled as the title, “Reboot.” An appealingly mensch-y Rachel Bloom (co-creator and star of the musical-dramedy “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend”) plays the deeply relatable, anxiety-stricken first-time showrunner Hannah. Hulu has given Hannah the greenlight to reboot an early 2000s sofa-anchored family sitcom, “Step Right Up.” Made it, Ma! Or maybe not.

Hannah, backed by the diverse younger comedy writers she’s hired, wants to reinvent the show with a new,...

‘Reboot’ Trailer: Johnny Knoxville and Keegan-Michael Key Revive a Fictional Family Sitcom
Image
As if “Gordy’s Home” wasn’t a big enough reason to say “Nope” to a sitcom reboot, Hulu takes the meta-concept in a whole new direction.

The latest series from iconic Emmy-winning sitcom creator Steven Levitan, the co-creator behind “Modern Family,” is Hulu’s “Reboot.” It stars Keegan-Michael Key, Judy Greer, and Johnny Knoxville as part of a dysfunctional cast made famous by the fictional early 2000s family sitcom “Step Right Up.” Now, almost 20 years later, the cast is coming back together again to revive the original hit series, plus squash their unresolved issues and navigate social media cancel culture.

Paul Reiser, Rachel Bloom, Calum Worthy, Fred Melamed, and Krista Marie Yu also star in the series, streaming September 20 with its first three episodes followed by weekly installments. And yes, the show-within-the-show “Step Right Up” is being rebooted for Hulu, in case there needed to be another meta layer in the mix.
