‘Tuner’ Review: Dustin Hoffman and Leo Woodall Fix Pianos in an Offbeat Indie That’s Far Better Than It Sounds
Image
Dustin Hoffman and Leo Woodall make quite the pair in “Tuner.” Hoffman’s character, veteran piano technician Harry Horowitz, is losing his hearing, while his people-shy apprentice (played by “White Lotus” breakout Woodall) has a condition called hyperacusis, which obliges Niki to wear earplugs at all times. Even the slightest sounds bother him, but despite that, this pair are the best piano tuners in town.

“It’s not about hearing. It’s about feeling,” Harry explains, and the same goes for Daniel Roher’s pitch-perfect indie drama, which cleverly plays our emotions without resorting to cheap manipulation. You might recognize Roher as the Oscar-winning director of “Navalny,” although his genre-straddling first narrative feature couldn’t be more different.

A laid-back rom-com crossed with a low-key crime thriller, combined with something more serious — unafraid to ask existential questions about overcoming a handicap that directly impacts one’s art — “Tuner” feels like...

Emma Stone Is Becoming Our Modern-Day Katharine Hepburn and ‘Bugonia’ Proves It
Image
With a shaved head, expert line deliveries and the assembly of another all-time memorable character, Emma Stone continues driving this golden age of cinema. She might just be our modern-day Katharine Hepburn.

Greek auteur Yorgos Lanthimos, Oscar-nominated director of “Poor Things” and “The Favourite,” has fully stepped into his Alfred Hitchcock era with “Bugonia,” which represents a bold new realm for the filmmaker. At the Telluride Film Festival, executive director Julie Huntsinger introduced Jesse Plemons as “Jesse F***ing Plemons,” and the actor lived up to the billing in every way.

After debuting at the Venice Film Festival, Lanthimos’ wildly audacious “Bugonia” unveiled itself to audiences at the Werner Herzog Theatre. The dark comedy presents the best kind of problem for distributor Focus Features for this Oscar season: how to shepherd two powerhouse contenders (the other being “Hamnet”) through the long, unpredictable marathon of awards campaigning and determine which narrative...

Gen Z Helps Disney Hit $63 Billion in 2024 Merch Sales: Looking Back on a Century of Licensing Magic
Image
Disney won’t go broke anytime soon. The Disney licensing empire dazzles with 2024 sales, merchandising magic, and a century of innovation.

The Tl;Dr…

$63 Billion Haul: Disney topped 2024 with $63 billion in licensed sales, owning 20% of the $307.9 billion global market.

Mickey’s Start: The licensing magic began in 1929 with Mickey Mouse tablets, growing to a $600,000 empire by 1934.

Quirky Classics: Donald Duck Orange Juice and Peter Pan Peanut Butter turned characters into nostalgic food favorites.

2024 Standouts: Lilo & Stitch ($2.6 billion), Star Wars, and Bluey led the charge, with a 14% profit jump in Q2 2025.

Future Shine: Gen Z (27% of 2025 sales) and integrated experiences keep Disney’s merchandising magic alive.

Disney might “go woke” but they likely won’t ever “go broke.” At least not anytime soon.

The Walt Disney Company has once again claimed the throne as the world’s top licensor, hauling in a magical $63 billion in retail sales of licensed consumer...

Image
Nivin Pauly Named In Cheating Case Over Film Rights ( Photo Credit – Instagram )

Nivin Pauly, once considered a rising star in Mollywood, has now hit a rough patch in his career. None of his recent films, in which he played the protagonist, have been financially successful. In this context, he has also become a concern for producers, not only due to the failure of his films but also because of other issues. These include the rumored fallout with Listin Stephen of Magic Frames.

Now, a Thalayolaparambu native named P.S. Shamnas, who is a producer, has accused Nivin Pauly and director Abrid Shine of defrauding him of 1.90 crores. Dolly Parton
Give Me a Word: The Collective Soul Story review – hyped-up account of nice-guy 90s mainstream rockers
Dolly Parton
Dolly Parton adds star power to this formulaic music documentary about Ed and Dean Roland’s band

Unless you are a big fan of what the American charts call “mainstream rock” and entering late middle age round about now, you may never have heard of 90s outfit Collective Soul. And yet this clearly band-endorsed documentary hypes them so much, you may question your own remembrance of things past. For instance, much is made of Collective Soul’s first big hit, Shine from 1993, which first broke out via airplay at an Atlanta college radio station, with the film giving the impression that everyone was humming this tune back in the day. This may not in fact have been the case: you might associate the time more with the likes of Whitney Houston, Nirvana and dancefloor fillers like Rhythm Is a Dancer.

It turns out that Collective Soul, named after a phrase...

Tom Cruise finally gets his (honorary) Oscar moment: Here’s his complete awards history
Image
Tom Cruise's next mission, should he choose to accept it, will be to collect an honorary Oscar.

The 62-year-old actor has been announced as one of the recipients of the 2025 Governors Awards alongside choreographer-artist Debbie Allen, production designer Wynn Thomas, and singer-songwriter Dolly Parton, the latter of whom will receive the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award. The awards will be handed out on Nov. 16 in Los Angeles.

Cruise rose to fame in the 1980s as the star of several teen movies before blowing up in Top Gun (1986) and becoming one of Hollywood's most bankable stars. He followed with a string of popcorn films that included Interview With the Vampire (1994), Minority Report (2002), War of the Worlds (2005), and the Mission: Impossible franchise (eight films between 2000 and 2025). While those types of films rarely result in trophy wins, Cruise still has a storied awards history that goes back decades.

‘The 52nd Annual Daytime Emmy Awards’ Nominations Timeline, Plus Find Out Which Categories Were Eliminated
Image
The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS), the organization behind the Daytime Emmy Awards, has announced some key changes that will impact “The 52nd Annual Daytime Emmy Awards” and ceremonies thereafter, including the addition of the previously announced Emerging Talent category, elimination of the Original Song category, and when to expect an announcement on nominations for this year’s awards ceremony.

First things first: Nominations for the “The 52nd Annual Daytime Emmy Awards” are set to be announced in late June/early July, with an official date yet to be determined.

The timeline makes sense, considering the ceremony was moved to October after previously taking place in June. The News & Doc Emmy Awards replaces the Daytime Emmy Awards on the June date, starting with the “The 46th Annual News & Doc Emmy Awards.”

Despite the move, the eligibility window for contention remains January 1, 2024 – December 31, 2024, with the judging period to start Thursday,...

Albert Einstein
Post your questions for Geoffrey Rush
Albert Einstein
He’s got an Oscar, played Albert Einstein, and even shared a flat with Mel Gibson. Now, the Australian actor is here to answer your questions

It’s not all that often you get the chance to put your questions to an honest-to-goodness best actor Oscar winner, but that’s what we’ve got coming down the pipe. Geoffrey Rush won the big one back in 1997 for his role as pianist David Helfgott in Shine, and he’s won a ton of others, including Baftas, Golden Globes, an Emmy, a Tony and four Screen Actors Guild awards. In fact it’s easier to ask what award hasn’t he won?

Now, Australia has produced more than its fair share of premium acting talent, from Cate Blanchett and Hugh Jackman to Nicole Kidman and Guy Pearce, but Rush is definitely up there with the best of them. Aside from Shine, he...

Demi Moore joins Tom Cruise, Eddie Murphy, and these other 1980s ‘popcorn stars’ denied at the Oscars
Image
Is there a kernel of truth to the notion that "popcorn stars" don't win Oscars? It certainly felt that way to fans hoping to see Demi Moore pull off a Best Actress victory at the 2025 Oscars. Her daring performance as Elisabeth Sparkle in The Substance had earned her a Golden Globe, Critics Choice, and SAG Award, putting her in frontrunner position as she arrived at the 97th Academy Awards on March 2. But suddenly, those hopes were dashed when Emma Stone read out the winner: Mikey Madison in Anora.

It wasn't unfamiliar to see one of the biggest box-office draws from decades past lose the big one. Perhaps the Academy couldn't see past what Moore had once been told she was — a popcorn actress. She addressed the demeaning title in her Golden Globes acceptance speech nearly two months prior, stating that a producer called her a “popcorn actress” 30 years ago, which...

Geoffrey Rush on Battling John Lithgow (and His Twisted Hand Puppet) in Nursing Home Thriller ‘The Rule of Jenny Pen’: ‘It’s Like “The French Connection,” But in a Wheelchair’
Image
Once Geoffrey Rush hit his mid-60s, he was offered more and more roles where his age was the focal point. Yet when he read the script for “The Rule of Jenny Pen,” the nursing home-set horror film offered a different angle.

Rush plays Stefan Mortensen, a tough-talking judge who suffers a stroke and must live in an assisted living facility. Unfortunately, one of the other wards is Dave Crealy (John Lithgow), who terrorizes the residents in increasingly sinister ways — along with the help of his hand puppet, Jenny Pen. As Dave gets more emboldened to do terrible things in the nursing home, Stefan loses more and more of his faculties, having to take down his nemesis as his motor skills fade.

“I’ve had quite a few scripts sent my way in the last eight years that felt like treading water,” the 73-year-old actor says. “But in this, his brain deteriorates — actually,...

This 2016 Romantic Fantasy Flop Is Netflix's Latest Obsession
Image
There should be some sort of moratorium on streaming while we figure out what on earth is going on with our viewing habits. Just recently, a forgotten Owen Wilson and Zach Galifianakis movie found a second life on Prime Video despite bearing a miserable 8% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Now, a new streaming hit has Wilson and Galifianakis beat in that regard, having climbed the Netflix charts with an even lower score.

2016's "Fallen" is a romantic fantasy drama based on Lauren Kate's 2009 novel of same name. It stars Addison Timlin as Lucinda Price, a teen who's sent to the reform academy Sword & Cross boarding school. There, she meets and swiftly develops a deep attraction to Jeremy Irvine's Daniel Grigori. However, as it turns out, Daniel is really a fallen angel who's been battling for Lucinda's affections for centuries. One look at the film's trailer and I can't...

Fact-Checking Chevy Chase’s Claim That He Slept With Bob Dylan
Image
The Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown was recently nominated for eight Academy Awards. But just think of how many more nominations it would have gotten had the filmmakers included a scene in which Dylan shares a bed with the future star of Caddyshack.

As odd as it may sound, this scene wasn’t totally off the table, seeing as how Chase once claimed to have spent the night with the legendary musician.

During an episode of the short-lived Netflix talk show Norm Macdonald Has a Show, the late comedian, and Bob Dylan superfan, asked Chase if he had any good Dylan stories. His response was more than a little surprising: “I slept with him.”

Chase went on to explain that he was attending Bard College at the time, just across the river from his hometown of Woodstock, New York. “He comes over, and he’s trying to teach himself the piano,...

HanWay Acquires More Than 100 Films From The Cohen Film Collection Including Buster Keaton & Merchant Ivory Pics
Image
Exclusive: HanWay Films has expanded its classics library after being appointed to represent The Cohen Film Collection.

The library of Cohen Media Group’s founder, Charles S. Cohen, comprises more than one hundred restored classic titles spanning from the silent era to the present day, including The Buster Keaton Collection and The Merchant Ivory Collection.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed and Cohen Media Group is the owner of HanWay, having acquired the company in 2022.

Late last year Charles Cohen’s media group hit choppy waters when the company was forced to sell multiple assets including British arthouse exhibitor and distributor Curzon to Fortress Investment Group. The company was acquired in a foreclosure auction involving multiple Cohen assets, including the Landmark cinema chain. Fortress had lent Cohen $534M but sued him last year for default. Cohen acquired Curzon in late 2019 amid a buying spree by the U.S. real estate developer.

Stephen King‘s novel The Institute (which can be purchased Here) reached store shelves on September 10, 2019 – and that same day, it was announced that David Kelley and Jack Bender, the duo behind the King series adaptation Mr. Mercedes, were working on a limited series adaptation of The Institute. Five years have gone since then and Kelley has dropped off the project along the way, but The Institute is moving forward at MGM+ – and Variety reports that a trailer for the show was screened at Content London on Thursday. Michael Wright, the head of MGM+, director / executive producer Jack Bender, and creator / executive producer Benjamin Cavell were also in attendance to talk about the show, including the decision to age up the characters for the adaptation and the story’s connection to The Shining.

Set to run for eight episodes, The Institute will tell the following story: When young genius Luke Ellis is kidnapped,...

Anton Yelchin's Earliest Starring Roles Included A Stephen King Flop
Image
Scott Hicks' 2001 supernatural drama "Hearts in Atlantis" should have been a big hit. Based on a novel by Stephen King, the movie blended the author's bent for 1950s and 1960s nostalgia with his knack for mysterious fantasy. Told in flashback, "Hearts" tells the story of a 12-year-old named Bobby (played by eventual "Star Trek" actor Anton Yelchin) who is largely neglected by his self-absorbed mother (Hope Davis) and who spends his idle summer days with his two best friends, Carol (Meeka Boorem) and Sully (Will Rothhaar). To make ends meet, Bobby's mom takes on a lodger named Ted Brautigan (Anthony Hopkins) and Bobby soon learns that Ted has some kind of psychic power. He can read minds, and make objects float.

Ted explains calmly to Bobby that he has to keep the powers secret, as he is being pursued by people he calls "Low Men." Unusually, Ted's superpowers aren't the center of the film's plot,...

Insider urges Spider-Man fans to keep calm after devastating Beyond the Spider-Verse rumor
Image
Don’t worry, nothing to see here. That’s the sentiment one Marvel insider is spreading amid a new rumor connected to the highly anticipated closing chapter to Sony’s Spider-Verse franchise which suggests the final film in the trilogy has hit a major setback.

Earlier this week, a new rumor began circulating online that suggested Sony’s Beyond the Spider-Verse was undergoing some serious setbacks that could result in a severe delay in the film’s release. According to the rumor gaining traction and being spread by multiple sources, Sony ordered a new script for Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse following the release of Across the Spider-Verse which basically had the writers starting from scratch.

As the reports suggested, nobody at the studio was in agreement over how the film should end, and as a result, the film’s release was said to be “very far off” with speculation that...

10 Fascinating Child/Teen Prodigy Movies
Russell Crowe in Un homme d'exception (2001)
Gifted children (or prodigy) movies are driven by an intriguing paradox: what if they don’t realize their full potential if not adequately challenged? But what if the pursuit of intense challenges inculcates within them a fear of failure which can adversely impact their childhood and beyond? In a world where individuals can be casually stigmatized for being ‘different’, extraordinary intellect can’t always be a gift. Movies like A Beautiful Mind (2001), Shine (1996), Good Will Hunting (1997), The Royal Tenenbaums (2001), The End of the Tour (2015), The Man Who Knew Infinity (2016) dealt with super-smart people burdened with mental or emotional problems. The films mentioned below grapple with such problems or quandary (of kids & teens), some with unflinching profundity and some hide its relevant messages beneath saccharine narrative layers.

Honorable Mention: Vitus (2006)

Fredi M. Murer’s light-hearted and leisurely paced Swiss drama tells the eponymous tale of a 12-year-old piano prodigy (Teo Gheorghiu...

Ryan Reynolds Thinks Eddie Murphy Should Have Gotten an Oscar for Nutty Professor
Image
Ryan Reynolds thinks one of Eddie Murphy's comedic performances was overlooked by the Academy. During a recent appearance on Variety's Awards Circuit podcast, the Deadpool & Wolverine actor shared that Murphy not receiving an Oscar nod for his multi-character work on The Nutty Professor is one of the "greatest, most, greatest injustices." When asked what he considered the greatest Oscars snub of all time, Reynolds shared:

"One of the greatest, most, greatest injustices is that Eddie Murphy doesn't have an Oscar for 'The Nutty Professor.'"

The Murphy-led comedy is a remake of the 1963 movie of the same name that starred Jerry Lewis. Directed by Tom Shadyac, the 1996 version sees Murphy tackle seven different roles, including Professor Sherman Klump and his charming but devious alter ego Buddy Love. The film earned mostly positive reviews from critics (and currently holds a 66% rating on Rotten Tomatoes), who praised Murphy for his hilarious portrayals.

Ralph Fiennes Isn’t Distracted By Oscar Buzz For ‘Conclave,’ Just Doing “Good Work”
Image
There is always a shortlist of actors deserving of an Academy Award. Ralph Fiennes is one of them. He earned a Supporting Actor nomination in 1994 for “Schindler’s List,” but lost out to Martin Landeau for “Ed Wood.” He landed a Best Actor nod in 1997 for “The English Patient,” but Geoffrey Rush had that one in the bag for “Shine.” And in the almost three decades since, he’s been overlooked for incredible work in films such as “The End of the Affair,” “The Constant Gardner,” “Coriolanus,” and “The Grand Budapest Hotel.” That may change with his celebrated performance as Cardinal Thomas Lawrence in Edward Berger’s adaptation of Robert Harris‘ novel, “Conclave.”

Read More: For his contemporary “Conclave,” Edward Berger embraces the discourse [Interview]

The fact Fiennes is not synonymous with the Oscars is sort of head-scratching.

Prepare to travel back in time to the ’90s with songs on the Beef soundtrack:

Here’s What Jophielle Love Says General Hospital Taught Her
Image
Fans are not too happy that Jophielle Love is exiting General Hospital. They’ve watched her grow as Violet over the years and have become attached to the highly talented youngster who seems wise beyond her years. Because Violet’s on-screen dad Finn, played by Michael Easton, has moved to Seattle, it was a bittersweet farewell. Violet was happy to rejoin her father but sad to leave everyone in Port Charles behind.

The Future Looks Bright

“I am excited to see what happens [next],” was what Love told Soap Opera Digest about life beyond Gh. In discussing her run as Violet Finn, which she began in 2019 at age five, Love pointed out that now that she’s leaving the show at age ten, she’s spent half of her life working on it. But she learned a lot during that time, praising the soap, which “pretty much taught me everything about...

The Killer's Game Soundtrack Guide: Every Song & When They Play
Image
The Killer's Game has a great soundtrack filled with music from different genres and notable artists like Dolly Parton and James Brown. Dave Bautista's 2024 action movie takes cues from many films that came before it to mix in hard-hitting fight sequences and action scenes with a few memorable needle drops. The movie does not overload the narrative or action sequences with songs that are overbearing or needlessly distracting, with director J.J. Perry instead using the music to enhance what those watching The Killer's Game experience.

While most action movies include hip-hop, rap, or rock songs to pair with its action sequences, The Killer's Game takes a slightly different approach to its music selections. The movie includes a song from Dolly Parton as part of its romantic journey after she is namedropped, while there is even plenty of international music included thanks to the widespread nature of the assassins who...

A Songbird Silenced In Iran: Rise And Shine Acquires Sales Rights To “Spellbinding” Doc ‘A Sisters’ Tale’ Ahead of TIFF Premiere
Image
Exclusive: Rise and Shine World Sales has acquired sales rights to the documentary A Sisters’ Tale ahead of its international premiere Tuesday at the Toronto International Film Festival.

In the documentary, Iranian filmmaker Leila Amini trains a lens on her sister Nasreen, a gifted singer-songwriter who hopes for nothing more than to share her music with audiences. But Nasreen’s dream collides with bitter reality in Iran where the country’s Islamist rulers have decreed that women cannot perform in public.

A Sisters’ Tale premiered last month at the Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland, an event attended by Rise and Shine co-founders Stefan Kloos and Anja Dziersk.

“We saw the film at the world premiere in Locarno and were spellbound,” Kloos and Dziersk said in a statement. “It is a delicate, yet really powerful voice out of Iran by an Iranian female filmmaker who lets us witness the restrictions that women are suffering from.

The band issued the following statement regarding their long hiatus and the new album:

“Pinhead Gunpowder started writing songs in 1990 and made our first 7” the following spring.

But since 2010, we’ve been playing just for ourselves, something bands forget to do. Rather than ‘writing for the new album’ or rehearsing to get ready for tour, we went back to the basement every year. We lived in the house we’d built, remembering how we’d made the music for...

Gary Oldman (‘Slow Horses’): Oscar winner would make Emmys history
Image
“Slow Horses” star Gary Oldman is the frontrunner to win Best Drama Actor at the upcoming Emmys. Oldman earned his first and only Oscar six years ago for his portrayal of World War II-era British prime minister Winston Churchill in “Darkest Hour.” That win was sandwiched between two other lead bids for “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy” (2012) and “Mank” (2021). His sole Emmy nomination to date came in 2001 for his guest appearance in the two-part seventh season finale of “Friends”; he lost to Derek Jacobi (“Frasier”).

On Apple TV+’s “Slow Horses,” which is based on a series of novels by Mick Herron, Oldman plays Jackson Lamb, a particularly uncouth MI5 officer saddled with the responsibility of supervising a group of service rejects. This constitutes his very first regular role on a continuing series and his first live action TV performance at all in over two decades.

Oldman would be the 12th...

Image
Can Tom Cruise, who has spent the last decade dominating the box office with explosive hits like the Mission: Impossible series and Top Gun: Maverick, finally snag that elusive Oscar? Iñárritu—the genius who steered Leonardo DiCaprio to his first ‘Best Actor’ Oscar for The Revenant after five previous nominations.

Recent reports suggest that the cast for Iñárritu’s next cinematic escapade reads like a who’s who of Hollywood talent, including Riz Ahmed, Sophie Wilde, Sandra Hüller, Jesse Plemons, and Michael Stuhlbarg.

The screenplay, a brainchild of Iñárritu along with Sabina Berman, Alexander Dinelaris, and Nicolas Giacobone, tells the tale of a man with untold power who’s caused a colossal mess but must convince humanity that he’s their knight in shining armor.

Image
‘General Hospital’ (Gh) spoilers confirm the final scenes between Violet Finn (Jophielle Love) and her father, Hamilton Finn (Michael Easton), had us all reaching for our hankies.

‘General Hospital’ Spoilers: Finn Said Goodbye To Violet

Jophielle held her own opposite Michael, and they knocked it out of the park. Finn said goodbye to Violet before he was to go off to rehab.

When Finn tried to explain to his little girl how he had been drinking, and he had to go away, Violet told her daddy that she could help him stop drinking alcohol; it was heartbreaking.

He told her that while he was so proud of her for calling Tracy Quartermaine (Jane Elliot) for help, he should be the one taking care of her.

Violet replied,

“We can take care of each other.”

Finn held his daughter once more, and before he left, Violet gave him a bracelet she...

Geoffrey Rush movies: 15 greatest films ranked worst to best
Image
Geoffrey Rush is one of the rare few who have achieved the triple crown of acting, meaning he has received an Emmy, Oscar and Tony Award (all three major acting awards) for his work (he refers to it as the Toe while waiting on his Egot).

Rush was an acclaimed actor in his native Australia for nearly two decades before the film “Shine” made him a known commodity in the rest of the world. He was 45 years old when suddenly his whole career changed and he was being considered for major roles in various mediums. That film about a pianist dealing with scars from his childhood won Rush the Oscar, BAFTA, Golden Globe and SAG Award for Best Actor. Those awards and acclaim launched him into a highly successful international career. He has since earned even more Oscar nominations, with two as Best Supporting Actor for “Shakespeare in Love” and...

Why You Should Be Watching ‘The Watchers’
Image
[This story contains spoilers for The Watchers.]

As an artist, it’s no easy task to define oneself, to showcase a perspective and style that differentiates you from others. And it’s always that “other” that looms large, impacting your and everyone else’s perceptions of you. This is certainly the case for Mina (Dakota Fanning), a young, directionless artist whose car breaks down in the ancient woods of Ireland where she finds herself lost, in more ways than one, in The Watchers, based on the novel by A.M. Shine.

The film marks the feature debut of 24-year-old Ishana Night Shyamalan, daughter of cinematic storyteller, M. Night Shyamalan. The younger Shyamalan cut her teeth as a producer and director on her father’s the Apple+ series Servant, and as second-unit director on M. Night’s beach horror feature, Old (2021). With The Watchers, Ishana Shyamalan sets out to define herself as her own artist, while her father’s shadow,...
