This wasn't the first time screenwriter Milos Macourek adapted the play of Alfred Jarry. In 1964 Macourek wrote his own adaptation, staged in Na Zábradlí Theatre. After success of the play, starring Jan Libícek as Ubu, Macourek and director Oldrich Lipský wanted to make the screen version. Unfortunatelly, after Russian occupation of Czechoslovakia in 1968 they were not allowed by communist regime to do such a political film.
