In the debut episode Virginia handyman Boyd Pritchett escorts his little sister to a college in Boston and takes up residence in her apartment. He accepts a job in the student union and is enchanted with flighty grad student Joy Byrnes.
Joy's boyfriend Jack is offered a job at Stanford University to the delight of Boyd who tries to hasten his departure and Wyleen makes her first friend.
Boyd hopes to get closer to Joy and arranges a double date with her and Jack but it backfires when the friend he arranges for his date develops a crush on him.
Boyd and Wyleen are called to visit the school counselor and the situation becomes stressful for him when he sees Joy in the waiting room afterwards and fears that she overheard the entire session.
Boyd Pritchett is nervous about asking out Joy while he encourages Leonard to date Liz. Meanwhile Wyleen complains when Boyd refuses to take her to a club to see her favorite band.
