Jessica Biel, The Better Sister

By Beatrice Verhoeven

Jessica Biel has been drawn to psychological thrillers as of late.

“I have been [interested] in these types of projects with complicated humans, exploring the question: Why do people do the things that they do?” Biel tells The Hollywood Reporter. “We’re all capable of goodness and evil — it’s all inside of us — so it’s hard to say, ‘Well, I would never do that,’ because maybe I would.”

Noting she often turns that question on herself, asking, ” ‘What if I was in this situation?’ ” Biel adds, “I like exploring [those ideas for myself] in a safe place where nobody actually gets hurt and nobody’s life is actually ruined.”

That desired self-examination is reflected in her most recent TV projects: In 2022, she starred in Candy as the real-life Candy Montgomery, who was accused of killing her best friend with an ax in 1980. This year, she...

‘Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ Bidding War Talks Heat Up; Taylor Sheridan Among New Names In The Mix – The Dish
Image
Exclusive: Talks for who’ll wind up with the much-prized Texas Chainsaw Massacre IP are beginning Monday as anywhere from five to eight studios and/or streamers are vying for rights of the Tobe Hooper- and Kim Henkel-created property that encompasses film, TV, live events and games.

We first told you about this beauty contest, administered by Verve, the agency having repped rights to the slasher franchise since 2017. Exurbia Films is the primary production company behind Texas Chainsaw Massacre, with Pat Cassidy, Ian Henkel and Kim Henkel as producers. The property is repped by attorney Marios Rush.

There are no clear frontrunners in the bidding, however, new creative parties have emerged with a passion for the project. Myriad notable creative entities have teamed with studios to pitch Verve and the Texas Chainsaw Massacre rightsholders on their vision for notorious killer Leatherface, who uses his chainsaw to go on a cannibalistic killing spree.

In the latest murder-mystery limited drama series, estranged sisters, played by Jessica Biel and Elizabeth Banks, put their pasts on hold to handle a bigger dilemma: a murder.

“The Better Sister,” based on the bestselling novel of the same name, premiered on Prime Video Thursday. When Chloe (Biel) finds her partner Adam in a pool of his own blood in their Hamptons house, her life turns upside down. She is forced to reunite with her estranged sister Nicky (Banks), who happens to be Adam’s ex-wife. Jessica Biel's New Prime Video Thriller Adaptation Continues An Optimistic 8-Year Rotten Tomatoes TV Streak
Image
Jessica Biel's new Prime Video thriller series continues a rather exciting TV streak that started back in 2017. Biel first climbed into fame in 1996 when she played Mary Camden in the family drama 7th Heaven, but in the years that followed, she focused predominantly on a movie career. Some of her notable projects include The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003), Blade: Trinity (2004), The Illusionist (2006), The A-Team (2010), Hitchcock (2012), and more. Biel didn't dive back into a regular TV role until 2017's The Sinner, a project that performed exceptionally well and earned the actor Golden Globe and Emmy nominations.

The Sinner holds an impressive 92% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes, and though Biel stepped off the screen after season 1 to focus wholly on her executive producer role, the series has continued to perform well. In the eight years since, Biel has taken up other TV roles, including Linetown (2019), and Candy (2022 to present). These series performed exceptionally well with critics,...

Jessica Biel Recounts Weird 'The Notebook' Audition With Ryan Gosling
Image
Jessica Biel — a performer in films like The Illusionist and Blade: Trinity, and the TV series The Sinner and Candy — had yet to land her breakout role until she starred in the 2003 remake of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Back then, Biel was still convinced she hadn't found the role that would change her life. However, during the production of the horror film, she had the opportunity to audition for a film that she was sure would launch her into stardom. The problem is that her audition for the lead role in The Notebook didn't go well. The 7th Heaven actor is sure that it was because of the heavy effects makeup she could not remove before auditioning opposite Hollywood heartthrob Ryan Gosling.

Biel appeared on an episode of The View (which we saw via Entertainment Weekly) to talk about her new TV series The Better Sister. The Prime Video series...

Has Hollywood Run Out of New Ideas? Not Every ’90s Show Needs To Be Rebooted
Image
Hollywood seems to have run out of fresh ideas, and we’re living in an era when every classic show is rebooted or revived.

I loved the 1980s and 1990s television shows, but did not want to see everyone rebooted. Some were classics for a reason, and others ran long enough in their prime.

On Monday, Variety announced that a 7th Heaven reboot is in early development. Why? While I loved the first several seasons, it’s a prime example of a series that ran too long and does not need to return.

(The WB/Screenshot)

7th Heaven ran for 11 seasons on The WB and The CW and followed the Camden family.

It was a family favorite back then as it explored how Rev. Eric Camden and his wife dealt with their many children.

While it leaned Christian, it wasn’t overly preachy, and featured some of the best sibling relationships on television.

Jessica Biel Calls 'The Notebook' One of the Roles 'That Got Away'
Image
Jessica Biel is opening up about her career.

The 43-year-old 7th Heaven actress got candid in an interview with InStyle.

During the discussion, Jessica discussed the roles that got away in her career.

Keep reading to find out more…

Jessica said that the team behind The Better Sister originally reached out to her about the role of Nicky. A week or so later, they called back to offer her the role of Chloe instead.

“I realized that I was even more well-suited for that character, even though I was really excited about that more wild and, sort of, balls-out character, as Nicky is,” she reflected.

“The universe just kind of opens up the right way, if you can flow with it,” she went on to say, reminiscing about other roles.

“I think about moments in my career—I auditioned for The Notebook; [it’s] one of those ones that got away. What...

CBS Studios unwisely pursuing 7th Heaven reboot with an unexpected cast member on board
Image
What's old is new again remains to be the leading philosophy in creating television series these days. Another reboot of a fan-favorite '90s show has hit early development, and it's probably the last one anyone was expecting. The WB's — and later The CW's, at least for one season — family drama series 7th Heaven is the latest small screen sensation from yesteryear to get a modern update.

Variety reported on Monday, May 19, 2025 that CBS Studios, the production company behind the hit series, has been in early development on a potential reboot series. Because it's so early in the process, there's no streaming service or network attached to the project, though Paramount+ or CBS would be the most logical fits for the reboot. However, we do know that a certain original cast member is working behind the scenes to get the series made. Again, you'd never guess!

'7th Heaven' Reboot In Development at CBS
Image
Nearly two decades after the Camden family said goodbye, 7th Heaven is reportedly on its way back to television. The project, now in early development at CBS Studios, is reportedly bringing back star Jessica Biel as executive producer after she starred in the original show. However, the real question is why CBS is reviving a show that has recently been the subject of much online ridicule by people just discovering old episodes, and was tarnished by revelations of lead star Stephen Collins’ child sexual abuse.

From 1996 to 2007, 7th Heaven delivered 11 seasons and over 240 episodes following Reverend Eric Camden (Stephen Collins), his wife Annie (Catherine Hicks), and their expanding brood through roughly a decade of first kisses, moral lectures, and some quaint and tidy answers to messy problems. However, according to Variety, the new reboot will not be connected to the original show in any way and will feature a new “diverse” family.

7th Heaven reboot in the works with Jessica Biel executive producing, but I think we all know who won’t be back
Jessica Biel, Beverley Mitchell, Barry Watson, David Gallagher, Catherine Hicks, Mackenzie Rosman, and Happy in 7 à la maison (1996)
Variety reports that a reboot of 7th Heaven is in the early stages of development at CBS Studios. Jessica Biel, who starred in the original series as Mary Camden, will executive produce the reboot through her Iron Ocean banner alongside Michelle Purple.

The original series centers on Reverend Eric Camden, a Protestant minister in the fictional town of Glen Oak, California, and his wife Annie, as they navigate the challenges and drama of raising their seven children, whose ages span from infancy to adulthood—with some having families of their own. The series spanned 11 seasons (10 on The WB and one on The CW) with 243 episodes. It was also one of the final shows produced by Aaron Spelling before his death in 2006.

Sources tell Variety that the 7th Heaven reboot “would focus on a diverse family, and that none of the original cast members would appear.” It’s still early days,...

Mila Kunis Faced This Series’ Awkward Sabotage Before She Became Jackie
Image
Before she stole hearts as Jackie Burkhart on That ’70s Show, Mila Kunis had a rough brush with early TV fame, and mind you, it wasn’t pretty. She apparently landed a role in a short-lived series that seemed promising on paper but crashed hard behind the scenes.

Kunis faced some sneaky sabotage that could’ve easily crushed a young actor’s confidence. However, instead of folding, she powered through, and the rest, as we know, is iconic sitcom history. Here’s how that weird detour nearly threw off her rise.

Mila Kunis froze in her 90210 audition, and that flop led straight to That ’70s Show Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher in That ’70s Show | Credits: Fox

Mila Kunis had a totally awkward crash course in Hollywood rejection before That ‘70s Show, and it came courtesy of Beverly Hills, 90210.

Here’s what happened: Kunis got the callback. She showed up.

‘7th Heaven’ Cast: What Are They Doing in 2025?
Image
Time flies when you’re not grounded by family dinners and moral monologues, huh? It’s been nearly 30 years since 7th Heaven first graced our boxy TVs, teaching us lessons one Bible verse at a time. Back then, the Camden crew was tighter than a lid on a pickle jar. We’re talkin’ about the days when buffering meant go make a sandwich, and moral lessons were delivered weekly with a side of family drama.

But life, as they say, isn’t always sunshine and sermonettes. Now here we are, nearly three decades deep since that 1996 premiere, and the cast has long since flown the coop. All doing their own thing, some soaring, some sailing, some just staying under the radar like that one friend who never posts on Instagram.

Life has thrown the cast into very different storms, and let us tell you, some umbrellas held better than others.

The First Best Picture Winner At The Oscars Was A War Movie Starring Gary Cooper
Image
Technically, there were two Best Picture winners at the first Oscars ceremony. The event was held on May 16, 1929, in the Blossom Room of the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, and it only took 15 minutes to hand out all the awards. This was because, unlike modern-day Oscars telecasts, the winners had already been announced a few months before; the ceremony was only held as a way to provide a "prom" for the winners (one in which Douglas Fairbanks handed them their statuettes).

The two Best Picture categories were divided by "vibe." One category was called Outstanding Picture, while the other was called Best Unique and Artistic Picture. William Wellman's war epic "Wings" took home the former, with F.W. Murnau's "Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans" winning the latter. There were also two Best Director categories that year, with Best Directing (Comedy Picture) going to Lewis Milestone for his film "Two Arabian...

Wtf Happened to Stephen Collins?
Image
There was always one show that the whole family could rely on; it wasn’t the best show; we didn’t need to see every episode, but when my mom turned on the TV and 7th Heaven was playing, we all sat down and watched. It was refreshingly innocent, at least for the 90s. The cast was beautiful and oh-so pleasant, held together by the patriarch preacher, the perfect old-school “TV Dad” during a time when sitcoms had given up on portraying a father figure who wasn’t a buffoon. Stephen Collins had that trustworthy smile, eyes full of wisdom, and an energy that assured everyone he was one of the good guys. This is why, out of all the demons that have been exposed in Hollywood, the dad from 7th Heaven was the most shocking. Proving once again that some monsters hide behind kind faces. His fans and even...

Stephen Collins Accuser Recalls Sexual Molestation By ‘7th Heaven’ Star in ID Series
Image
One of the alleged victims of Stephen Collins – who played Reverend Eric Camden on 7th Heaven for 11 seasons before his career was ended by a molestation scandal – sits down for a tell-all interview in the first episode of Investigation Discovery’s Hollywood Demons docuseries.

In the first episode of the ID six-parter, April Price recounted a series of allegedly inappropriate sexual encounters she had with the actor in 1983. Price was 13 years old and Collins lived next door to her aunt and herself in a Los Angeles apartment complex. “This is bad. This is really bad. I don’t know what I’m going to do,” Price at one point in the episode recalled after finding herself along with Collins in his apartment, and he emerged from his bedroom without any clothes on.

“At this point, I was as rigid and tight and as small as I could make myself, and...

Image
7th Heaven actor Jeremy London comes to the defense of Stephen Collins in Hollywood Demons, an Investigation Discovery series premiering Monday that promises to “focus on different scandals and tragedies” in Tinseltown.

The first episode of the six-episode series focuses on Collins, who admitted back in 2014 that he sexually assaulted three underaged girls but was never charged. London, who played a minister on the drama that aired on the WB and CW from 1996 to 2007, spoke to ID about his memories working with the actor.

‘Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ Hot Packages Revving Up As Leatherface Lurks Again – The Dish
Image
Exclusive: Studios and filmmakers are knocking on Verve’s door as the agency is sitting on bloody good IP that they’re looking to take on the town: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Verve has repped the rights for the slasher series created by Tobe Hooper and Kim Henkel since 2017.

At a time when horror and franchises are really the only surefire bets at the post-Covid and strike-impacted box office, the 51-year-old horror property about a chainsaw-wielding serial killer still has potential to make a killing.

One of the parties, we hear, showing interest in reviving Texas Chainsaw Massacre is filmmaker/scribe Jt Mollner and producer Roy Lee, hot off Strange Darling, their $3 million-grossing, 96% certified Rotten Tomatoes cult hit. If Mollner gets a script together, word is that Glen Powell would like to read it. It’s very early days on this; no contracts or attachments as of yet, and the...

Searles, who appeared in the last four seasons of “7th Heaven ” as Mac, says in “Hollywood Demons” that he admired Collins during the making of the show, explaining: “He would drive to work in a beautiful Toyota Prius every single morning when the man was making enough money that he could have been driving up in a Bentley. He could have been decked-out, dressed in the nines, but he was wearing what Jay Leno typically wears, with the blue jeans shirt and jeans. I always felt like I want to be like that.

Actors Who Were Almost Cast As Star Trek's Geordi La Forge Before LeVar Burton
Image
When "Star Trek: The Next Generation" first began in 1987, LeVar Burton was probably the biggest star in the cast. He had already been nominated for three Emmys, once in 1977 for playing Kunta Kinte in the celebrated miniseries "Roots," and two more in 1985 and 1986 for hosting the beloved book-based kid program "Reading Rainbow." The latter show would end up netting him 12 Emmy wins between 1990 and 2007, and cement his reputation as one of his generation's preeminent TV celebrities. The fact that he would be selected to play chief engineer Geordi La Forge on "Star Trek" only more deeply entrenched Burton in the public's awareness.

Geordi La Forge was, more than anything, a nerd. He was deeply interested in machines and engines, and Burton was given the lion's share of NextGen's nonsensical polysyllabic technobabble. He was also notoriously undersexed. Geordi was equipped with a visor that tapped directly into his brain, feeding him...

New Details Of ‘7th Heaven’ Star Stephen Collins’ Struggle With Attraction To Underage Girls Revealed In Documentary
Image
Investigation Discovery announced the six-part docuseries Hollywood Demons, in which each two-hour episode will cover a different horror story from the industry. The first episode details the downfall of actor Stephen Collins.

Best known for playing Rev. Eric Camden on 7th Heaven for 11 years, Collins was first investigated for sexually abusing underage girls in 2012. The investigation followed a leaked video of Collins admitting the crimes to his therapist. The footage, recorded unbeknownst to Collins or his therapist, was allegedly taken by Collins’ estranged wife, Faye Grant.

In 2014, Collins returned to headlines with a long statement to People that confessed to having had inappropriate sexual conduct with three minors between the years of 1973 and 1994.

Following this 2014 statement, Collins gave an interview to ABC News’ 20/20 where he adamantly insisted that he was, “absolutely not attracted, physically or sexually attracted to children.”

Kit Williamson Details Casting the ‘Uncancelable’ Kathy Griffin in His New Series ‘Unconventional’
Image
When Kit Williamson’s “EastSiders” premiered on YouTube in December 2012, Netflix had not yet debuted its first original series. A dozen years later, streaming has overtaken traditional television in the market — and Williamson is back with another LGBTQ+ slice of life show, this time in the form of “Unconventional” on Revry.

“I don’t know that anybody really predicted it becoming what it’s become,” the actor/creator/writer/director told TheWrap of the streaming boom. “I hope that there is an increasing demand for independently created television when we live in such a, let’s be honest, metric-driven world where algorithms are deciding whether or not stories get told or continued.”

“Will we have the same four-quadrant appeal as ‘7th Heaven’? No, we won’t. But that’s Ok,” Williamson explained. “We need specific stories that cater to our communities authentically and don’t pull their punches or try...

John Cena's Matchbox Movie Adds Another Major MCU Star
Image
John Cena's Matchbox movie has added a third actor from the Marvel Cinematic Universe to its cast. Corey Stoll, who portrayed Darren Cross/Yellowjacket/M.O.D.O.K. in the Ant-Man movies, has become the latest actor to join Matchbox.

Deadline was the first to report Stoll's casting. At this time, his role remains under wraps. While he is perhaps best known on the big screen for his villainous MCU role, Stoll's film credits include Non-Stop, Driven, First Man, The Many Saints of Newark, West Side Story, and Rebel Moon. The actor also has quite a few prominent credits on the small screen, including starring roles in Law & Order: LA, House of Cards, and Billions. He also recently wrapped opposite Jessica Biel and Elizabeth Banks on The Better Sister, a new thriller series for Prime Video, based on the novel by Alafair Burke.

5 Fascinating Facts About The First-Ever Oscars
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

The very first Academy Awards were held on May 16, 1929, in the Blossom Room of the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel. Douglas Fairbanks, one of the biggest stars of his time, presented every single one of the awards. Right away, the timing was a little off, as the Oscars didn't adhere to specific calendar years for their awards. Instead, the awards were given to all the films released between August 1, 1927, and July 31, 1928.

The Academy continued with the "straddle" schedule for its first five years, considering a "release year" to be August 1 to July 31. Perhaps wanting to keep things a little cleaner, the Academy expanded the year of the 6th Academy Awards, which considered all the films released from August 1, 1932, all the way to December 31, 1933. The 7th Oscars was the first Oscars to finally measure by a proper calendar year. The Awards have been following that pattern ever since.

Xo, Kitty Needs to Just Focus on Kitty and Min-Ho
Image
Can I let you all in on a little secret?

I watched the entirety of Xo, Kitty Season 2, and by the time the credits rolled, I had forgotten everything important that had happened.

It genuinely sucks when that happens, but it’s worse when it’s something that happens with a show that genuinely has great potential.

(Park Young-Sol/Netflix) Xo, Kitty is One of the Few Teen Series in a Disappearing Market

One of the biggest takeaways from Xo, Kitty is that the season came to a quick end by the time it started to find its rhythm, which sums up the series itself.

Kitty is a cute and fun teen protagonist in an age that lacks them.

Why Drag Me To Hell Star Alison Lohman Disappeared From Hollywood
Image
When I was a kid, I wanted to watch every Alison Lohman movie I could find. The actor may not be a household name, but throughout the 2000s, she starred in some of the most interesting films being made, often opposite more experienced stars like Michelle Pfieffer, Nicolas Cage, and Ewan McGregor. Lohman always played characters younger than herself, and I mentally categorized her alongside other teen stars of the moment like AnnaSophia Robb and Keke Palmer -- even though she was born in 1979.

Sometimes, Lohman was cast as a cherubic beauty, but other times she played thornier characters, including troubled teens, child con artists, and, perhaps most famously, a "hag"-hating promotion-seeker. The actor had appeared in fewer than two dozen movies in her career, yet the majority of them were compelling in some way. Then, around 2009, she largely disappeared from the spotlight. In the decade and a half since,...

Star Trek's First Officers, Ranked From Worst To Best
Image
Everyone has their favorite "Star Trek" captain. Ever since the '90s, debates have raged as to whether Kirk could beat Picard, and once Sisko came along, all bets were off. Just as every Klingon warrior needs a cha'Dich, even the best captain needs a solid second behind them. Over the years, many have tried to follow in the footsteps of Starfleet greatness, sometimes even exceeding it. As great as the limelight is, however, the position of reliable backup can be even harder.

It's time for the first officers to shine. Who are the greatest seconds-in-command? Like asking what makes a great vice president, that can be tough. Do we want someone who can and will take over or just the very best at carrying out their orders?

For the purposes of equal ranking, we haven't included absolutely every main crew in the franchise -- the musical chairs of the...
