Martin Scorsese to Woody Allen: 12 Films That Are Secretly Inspired by Fyodor Dostoevsky’s Themes
Image
From Martin Scorsese’s Taxi Driver to Woody Allen’s Match Point, some of the most unforgettable movies out there owe a quiet debt to Fyodor Dostoevsky. Sure, you won’t see his name plastered across the posters, but his vibe is all over Hollywood.

The Russian master’s favorite playgrounds, guilt, obsession, morality, faith, and the messy duality of human nature, translate almost too perfectly to the screen. Think about it: loners spiraling in New York streets, killers convinced they’ve outsmarted morality, families torn apart by power and betrayal. That’s Dostoevsky, but with sharper suits and slicker cinematography.

The wild part is how seamlessly his ideas slip into thrillers,...

Image
Michael Sloan, the writer-producer who co-created with Richard Lindheim the durable 1980s TV series The Equalizer, died August 13. He was 78.

His death was announced by his family, which includes his wife of 35 years, the actor Melissa Sue Anderson, who starred in NBC’s Little House on the Prairie in the 1970s and ’80s. The family announcement did not name a place or cause of death but noted that he passed away peacefully.

Michael Fred Sloan was born to a show business family on October 14, 1946, in New York City. Michael Sloan, the television writer and producer who co-created TV series “The Equalizer” with Richard Lindheim, died Wednesday in New York City. He was 78.

Born in New York City in 1946, Sloan was exposed to the entertainment industry from an early age. His grandfather, Fred Stone, was a vaudeville performer known for playing the Scarecrow in the 1902 Broadway production of “The Wizard of Oz.” His parents Paula Stone and Michael Sloane were Broadway stage producers, mounting numerous plays throughout the 1940s and 50s.

Sloan moved to England where he wrote and produced his first three films: a 1972 short titled “Hunted” and two features titled “Assassin” and “Moments,” released in 1973 and 1974, respectively. In 1976, he wrote an episode of “Columbo” for Universal Television. Why Did Michael Bay Leave Transformers as Director Eyes Franchise Return?
Image
Explosive director Michael Bay is being alleged to return to the Transformers franchise after Paramount is scouting for a director to take the franchise in a newer direction. The director directed a total of five Transformers movies before walking out in the late 2010s.

However, it was initially the intention of the 6 Underground director to finish a trilogy and stop at three. According to Unilad, Steven Spielberg even advised him to stop after finishing three Transformers movies, but Paramount “begged” Bay to return and continue to direct more because of the profits that the studio was earning.

After five movies, Michael Bay felt burned out and tired and wanted a change of theme, which resulted in him walking out of the franchise. The Transformers movies were even facing low box office numbers, and Bay had to stop eventually.

I made too many of them. Steven Spielberg said, ‘Just stop at...

Ryan Gosling & Will Ferrell to Star in Action Comedy 'Tough Guys'
Image
Ryan Gosling is done being a nice guy. The actor is in talks to star in and produce Tough Guys, a new action comedy for Amazon MGM Studios. He is set to share the screen with comedy legend Will Ferrell for the feature, which isn't connected to Ferrell's buddy cop hit The Other Guys, nor Gosling's The Nice Guysor The Fall Guy. We guess they're just two guys who like being, well, guys… and if you ask us, they're the iconic duo we never knew we needed until now — though some people may have been hoping for a different team-up.

As reported by Deadline, Tough Guys is based on a spec script by longtime Workin' Moms scribe Daniel Gold, telling the story of "two henchmen who are tired of being disposable and break free from the criminal underworld, rewriting the rules as they build a new life on their own terms.

Ryan Gosling and Will Ferrell Are 'Tough Guys' In a New Crime Comedy
Image
Ryan Gosling is trading in Ken’s fur coat for a bulletproof vest. The La La Land star is set to headline Tough Guys, a new action comedy that pairs him with none other than his Barbie co-star Will Ferrell. The project is in development at Amazon MGM Studios, Deadline has confirmed, with both stars set to produce through their respective banners. And no, this is not a sequel to The Fall Guy, nor is it a sequel to their Jimmy Kimmel bit, Knife Guys. Or even Guys and Dolls.

Originally written as a spec script by Daniel Gold, Tough Guys tells the story of two criminal henchmen who are fed up with being expendable cannon fodder. Tired of their roles in the shadows, they decide to ditch the underworld entirely and rewrite the rules on their own terms — by breaking free and forging a new path. Expect equal parts bullets and belly laughs,...

‘Friday Night Lights’ Star Addresses Reboot Return Rumors [Exclusive]
Image
Apple TV+’s upcoming crime drama Smoke might be Jurnee Smollett’s latest chapter, but for longtime fans of quality TV, it’s hard to forget where she proved she was something special: Dillon, Texas. Before Lovecraft Country, Birds of Prey, and Underground, Smollett joined Friday Night Lights in Season 4 as Jess Merriweather, a fiercely determined teen with a mind for football and dreams of coaching. She quickly became one of the show’s most compelling late-game additions—and now, 13 years later, fans are wondering if she’d return for the reboot reportedly in the works.

In a recent interview with Collider’s Taylor Gates, Smollett addressed the speculation directly and didn’t hesitate to show love for her old Dillon family—especially showrunner, Jason Katims.

“I love Jason Katims, so if I was invited to, it would be an honor. In a heartbeat. I’d do anything with Jason Katims.

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 + 4 Review: Dropping In Again
Image
There’s a distinct texture to the memories of the early 2000s, a kind of vibrant, sun-bleached energy that feels perfectly captured by the whir of polyurethane wheels on pavement. After the brilliant success of the Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 remake showed us it was possible to go home again, the series returns with Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 + 4. This time, the project is helmed by developer Iron Galaxy, tasked with reviving two of the franchise’s most acclaimed chapters.

The immediate appeal is undeniable; the fast-paced, score-chasing, combo-linking gameplay feels as intuitive and absorbing as ever, now presented with a crisp modern finish. But this package is not a simple, uniform act of preservation. It quickly becomes clear that this is a tale of two distinct creative philosophies.

One game is treated as a careful restoration, while the other is subjected to a fundamental reinterpretation of its structure and pacing.

Escape Artist: Ted Kotcheff, 1931–2025
Image
First Blood. In 1983, Ted Kotcheff attended the Brussels Film Festival as a guest of honor; he was also there to promote the first Rambo movie, First Blood (1982), which would be the biggest commercial success of his directorial career. First Blood had originally been set for production in the early 1970s but was put through the developmental wringer for the better part of a decade, with a revolving door of potential leading men, attached directors, and multiple revisions of its survival-thriller plotline. It was an odd project for Kotcheff, then best known for the barbed social satire of Fun with Dick and Jane (1977) and North Dallas Forty (1979), broad, vulgar comedies that dealt with class warfare by means other than armed combat. “Freud says that guns are an extension of your dick,” scoffs Nick Nolte’s battered wide receiver Phil Elliott in North Dallas Forty, mocking the hardened gridiron ideal he’s...

"That One Would Be Next": Tony Hawk Shares Thoughts On What Thps Game Should Follow 3+4
Image
Tony Hawk himself has weighed in on which of his games needs a remake after Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 + 4. Hawk has always been vocal about his involvement in the world of skating video games: having assigned his name to the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater series, the most iconic franchise in simulated skateboarding, he's inevitably always going to be associated with it. The recent remakes of Pro Skater games - first 1 + 2, and now 3 + 4, due out later this month, has catapulted the series back into the public eye. But now that all the existing Thps games have been tapped for remaking, what's next?

In a recent interview, Hawk told Screen Rant that Tony Hawk's Underground - colloquially known as Thug - would naturally be the next candidate for a remake, saying, "By chronology, if we get to keep doing [these remakes], then after this one that would be next. We're on the precipice of...

The Creep: Christopher Smith’s reboot of 2004 film Creep comes to Shudder in 2026
Christopher Smith at an event for Severance (2006)
Back in 2004, Christopher Smith made his feature writing and directing debut with the horror film Creep, which starred Franka Potente as a young woman who discovers a hideously deformed cannibal living in the London Underground. A few weeks ago, we learned that Smith is set to direct a reboot of his film – and since another horror franchise has taken over the name Creep, this reboot is called The Creep. Now, Deadline reports that the Shudder streaming service has acquired the North American distribution rights to the film, which will be released sometime in 2026.

Production on The Creep is scheduled to take place in the UK this fall. Jasmine Jobson (Top Boy), Andy Nyman (Wicked) and rapper Aitch have signed on to star in the film, which will (as expected) be set in London’s shadowy underground. The story follows a struggling artist (Jobson) forced to return to her criminal drug-running past.

Tony Hawk Wants A Tony Hawk’s Underground Remaster Too: “I’ll Campaign All I Can”
Image
Just like many longtime fans of the skating game franchise, Tony Hawk also wants to see a remaster of Tony Hawk's Underground. The Pro Skater series is seeing its second remaster collection with Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 + 4 in July 2025, but the other iconic series, Underground, has not received the same treatment.

Screen Rant spoke to Hawk at Thps Fest, and asked him if there are aspirations to keep the series going with a Thug remaster. "I always have aspirations," Hawk said. "It's not up to me generally. I'll campaign all I can, but I'm working with a much bigger company that's a lot smarter than me." Hawk then clarified that a Tony Hawk's Underground remaster hasn't really been discussed, noting that Thps 3 + 4 hasn't yet been released, the success of which may impact the franchise's future.

The Creep: Christopher Smith to direct a reboot of his 2004 film Creep
Image
Back in 2004, Christopher Smith made his feature writing and directing debut with the horror film Creep, which starred Franka Potente as a young woman who discovers a hideously deformed cannibal living in the London Underground. Now, Screen Daily reports that Smith is set to direct a reboot of his film – and since another horror franchise has taken over the name Creep, this reboot is called The Creep.

Andy Nyman plays a captive well-versed in Creep’s nefarious behavior, while award-winning rapper Aitch plays Natter G, a famous drill rapper with natural survival instincts.

Speaking of such, remember that confusing arc in Season 3 involving the Russians?

As the show nears its end, fans are starting to really dive deeper into the Stranger Things lore and find answers to questions that have been plaguing them since the earlier seasons. There is hope that all of these will be...

Image
The Now You See Me magical heist films are becoming a trilogy with Now You See Me: Now You Don’t, and Lionsgate has just disclosed some of the scenic shooting locations for the film. The Emirati capital of Abu Dhabi will be one such key location, due to its iconic city landscape.

Per Deadline, the third installment in the franchise, which has largely been kept under wraps, benefits from the Abu Dhabi Film Commission’s support, including a 35% rebate and logistical guidance. "The Lionsgate team benefited not only from Abu Dhabi Film Commission’s financial rebate offering, but also from the support of our key partners, Miral Destinations, facilitating key filming and the expertise of our local crew, led by Epic Films," said Mohamed Dobay, Acting General Director of Creative Media Authority.

Ted Kotcheff, best known for directing First Blood and Weekend at Bernie’s, has died at 94
Image
It’s sad news today. Ted Kotcheff, the Canadian filmmaker who directed First Blood, Weekend at Bernie’s, and The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz, has died at the age of 94.

Kotcheff got his start working for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation as the youngest director on staff. However, he was briefly jailed and branded a communist after his first visit to the United States, which led to his leaving to work in London. He memorably helmed Underground, an episode of Armchair Theatre in which one of his principal actors actually died in the middle of the live shoot. He scrambled to re-structure the story during the commercial break while the other actors improvised, unaware that their fellow cast member had just passed away.

When Kotcheff returned to Canada, he helmed The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz, which starred Richard Dreyfuss as a brash young Jewish Montrealer who embarks on a string of get-rich-quick schemes to gain respect.

Sydney Sweeney to Star in and Produce ‘I Pretended to Be a Missing Girl’ Reddit Adaptation
Image
Sydney Sweeney is getting further into the thriller genre.

The actress/producer is set to lead the adaptation of a short story that first originated on Reddit, “I Pretended to Be a Missing Girl,” which was written in 2021 by high school English teacher Joe Cote. The viral short story is now getting a big screen adaptation by way of Oscar-winning “Forrest Gump,” “A Star Is Born,” and “Killers of the Flower Moon” scribe Eric Roth, with Sweeney starring and producing, an individual with knowledge of the project told IndieWire.

Cote’s story, titled “I pretended to be a missing girl so I could rob her family,” centers on a drifter (Sweeney) who impersonates a missing girl ten years after she went missing to rob her family, only to realize it’s a terrible mistake. The drifter plans to convince the family she is their missing child, and stay just for...

Sydney Sweeney Turning an English Teacher’s Reddit Short Story Into a Movie
Image
Four years ago, a high school English teacher posted a short story to Reddit, a tale with Gone Girl-worthy twists and turns. Now, Joe Cote is in the midst of his own real-life plot twist.

The Massachusetts-based educator’s project is in development as a feature, with Sydney Sweeney attached to star and produce, and Oscar-winning Forrest Gump scribe Eric Roth penning the script.

Warner Bros. has won the rights to the package in a competitive situation that now puts the teacher on Hollywood’s radar. He first landed representation after manager Aaron Folbe of Underground Entertainment stumbled upon the story and sought Cote out for a meeting.

Sweeney’s involvement on the project then pushed it into overdrive, with her bringing Roth aboard.

Cote’s story, titled “I pretended to be a missing girl,” centers on a young woman who shows up at a family’s doorsteps ten...

Michael Bay’s New Parkour Documentary 'We Are Storror' Called "Incredible" in First Reactions
Image
Transformers director Michael Bay returns to the big screen. But rather than a tale about giant alien robots, the filmmaker instead keeps things grounded (so to speak) with a documentary all about Storror, a group of parkour and freerunning athletes. We Are Storror has now debuted at SXSW 2025, and the first reactions have since emerged, with critics having praised Bay’s deliriously kinetic vision of the aerial urban acrobatics.

Critic @SiddhantAdlakha took to X/Twitter to share that We Are Storror is nothing less than "incredible," praising the documentary for offering insight into the group and how they deal with being aging athletes, its reflection on more universal themes and, of course, "dizzying" parkour sequences.

The Michael Bay-directed* “We Are Storror” is absolutely incredible. A dizzying stunt doc about an aging parkour group that puts into perspective the passage of time and the thrill of moving images throughout history. Praying for an IMAX release.

Michael Bay Is Still a Blast (And So Is His “Illegal” New Parkour Movie)
Image
Michael Bay is in Miami, which seems right. He also doesn’t exactly love strictly scheduled interviews, and instead just calls when he’s ready to chat, which also seems right. Today, the director of tentpole blockbusters like The Rock and the Transformers franchise is calling to talk about his new parkour documentary, We Are Storror, which is debuting at the 2025 South by Southwest Film Festival this weekend.

Interviewing Bay feels like watching one of his summer tentpole hits. He’s energetic, upbeat and full of boyish humor (and plenty of f-bombs). He’s now 60, but thankfully still sounds like how you expect Michael Bay to sound — like a guy who is still ready to blow some shit up (“Oh, you live in Austin?” he asks, “I burned down a house there once!”).

Interestingly, this idea — can we maintain our playfulness as we age? — is a major theme in We Are Storror.

The 15 Lowest-Rated Ryan Reynolds Movies of All Time, Ranked
Image
Bringing snark and condescending line deliveries to every role, Ryan Reynolds is a love-him-or-hate-him kind of actor. He made his Hollywood debut in 1995 in a teen TV series called Fifteen. Since then, he has made a name for himself in comedy, horror, and most notably, as the "Merc with a Mouth" Wade Wilson, better known as Deadpool. Among critics and audiences, Deadpool and its sequel are considered some of the best superhero movies of the 21st century.

Ryan Reynolds almost single-handedly made the character of Deadpool a reality. Of course, it's not all love for Reynolds. With reviews of Deadpool & Wolverine being fairly mixed, it's a good time to go into the Ryan Reynolds archive to see which of his films is actually rated the lowest. Some of the films are entertaining gems that critics got wrong. Others are tough to watch, even for hardcore fans of the Canadian actor.

Doc Season 1 Episode 7 Review: Secrets and Lies
Image
Character dives are often the strongest installments for many shows, particularly those with more procedural formatting, like Doc.

It allows the viewers to connect with characters they may not have otherwise done. It also helps us look at characters in a whole new light.

One could argue that Doc Season 1 Episode 7 aims to do this well into the series by placing the two most consistent antagonists into the forefront.

(Courtesy of Fox) Doc’s Secondary Characters Remain Underdeveloped Near the Season’s Conclusion

We only have three episodes of Doc Season 1 remaining. I know; it’s shocking to me, too.

I’ve been getting lost in this story arc, which focuses so heavily on Amy and her journey, that it’s hitting me now that little remains in the first season.

Why Christopher Meloni Left Law & Order: Svu (Only To Come Back)
Image
As of this writing, there have been approximately 900,000 episodes of TV to have come out of Dick Wolf's long-running "Law & Order" franchise.

In actuality, that number is closer to 1,400, but that's still nothing to sneeze at. The original "Law & Order" debuted in 1990, and it quickly became one of the most celebrated crime shows on television. After a few years, it also became one of America's most reliable comfort-watches, providing miniature grit-covered criminal melodramas that could be easily consumed in four-to-five-hour binge-watching blocks. "Law & Order," along with its many spinoffs, were all rigidly and predictably structured, letting audiences relax over the sight of dead bodies.

Characters rotated out of the "Law & Order" shows regularly. There were certainly long-standing fan favorites, but the real main character of "Law & Order" was the criminal justice system itself. In the world of "Law & Order," cops were hard-working and devoted...

Jack White and Daughter Scarlett Perform “Archbishop Harold Holmes” in NYC: Watch
Image
Jack White was joined by on stage by his daughter, Scarlett, during his concert at Irving Plaza in New York City on Monday night.

Scarlett, 18, is the oldest child of White and Karen Elson. She seems to have taken after her father’s musical acumen, as she played bass guitar on two tracks from his latest album, No Name—”Archbishop Harold Holmes” and “Underground.” On Monday, Scarlett had the chance to back her father live on the former song during the encore of his Irving Plaza set.

In a recent interview with Consequence, Jack described Scarlett as a “great” bassist, but emphasized letting her carve out her own musical path. “She likes doing her own thing, and I like her doing her own thing, so once in a while we might touch base here and there, but, I like her doing her own thing, and I think that’s where she feels comfortable,...

Hunting Daze (Jour de Chasse), the first feature from writer/director Annick Blanc, begins on a desolate road somewhere in rural Quebec, the kind where the quiet feels eerie rather than peaceful. That’s where we meet Nina and her two companions, fellow strippers stranded by the side of the road because their not-so-bright manager, Mike, forgot to fill up his car’s gas tank.

Nina eventually manages to get Kevin, one of the guys from the bachelor party they’d performed for the night before, to come to their rescue with gas. But things go sideways quickly. A heated argument between Nina and Mike escalates into violence, and Nina winds up returning with Kevin to the hunting lodge. The deal? She can stay the night and get a ride back to civilization later,...

Spike Lee Developing Fleet Week Dramedy ‘Liberty’ From Writers Rebecca Murga & Jalysa Conway
Image
Exclusive: Spike Lee is developing Liberty, a comedic military drama based on a pitch from writers Rebecca Murga and Jalysa Conway, which he’ll produce with an eye to direct, sources tell Deadline.

Said to be in the vein of The Last Detail, Hal Ashby’s Oscar-nominated 1973 Navy dramedy starring Jack Nicholson, Otis Young and Randy Quaid, Liberty follows a group of military cadets on one crazy night in New York City during Fleet Week. This is the second military-themed project Lee has developed with Murga and Conway — a pair of military veterans who will write the script — on the heels of a coming-of-age Rotc drama series for Amazon, on which we were first to report in 2022.

Lee and Steven Jackson will produce for their 40 Acres And A Mule Filmworks, alongside Underground, which reps the writers.

A U.S. Army vet who completed two tours in Afghanistan, Murga has been a...
