In 1992, the now acclaimed director Roland Emmerich, alongside action superstars Jean Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren, created Universal Soldier. A movie that was maybe under-appreciated in the golden age of action films but nonetheless a highlight in all of their careers. Regardless, financial issues loomed for the studio that created it. This resulted in rights being sold and two mostly horrendous television movies being released on Showtime starring Gary Busey and Burt Reynolds. Seven years later, in 1999, the franchise would attempt its big screen comeback with the legendary Jean Claude Van Damme desperate for a career win on a project no director seemed willing to touch. Would the result be a resurrection of not only the franchise but its leading man’s once unstoppable career? Or one of the final nails in the coffin of both of their big screen futures? This is What Happened to Universal Soldier: The Return.

Here’s a weird fact: Shortly before the tragic events of 9/11, Jackie Chan was in pre-production on an action movie called “Nosebleed,” in which he would have played a window washer fighting terrorists at the World Trade Center. That movie obviously never got made, but the concept has apparently been floating around in the ether, because nearly 25 years later we’ve got “Cleaner,” a “Die Hard” knockoff starring Daisy Ridley as a window washer fighting terrorists on a different skyscraper.
As “Die Hard” knockoffs go, it could be worse.
“Die Hard” knockoffs are their own subgenre, in case you hadn’t noticed, and there sure are a lot of them. The formula is simple: Bad guys take over a specific location, a good guy is trapped in that location with them, and the good guy takes down those bad guys one at a time. In the years that followed John McTiernan...

Through iconic movies like Die Hard, Conan the Barbarian, and Rambo, stars like Bruce Willis and Sylvester Stallone practically defined the action genre for generations. Playing on the machismo of these stars, a non-stop slew of movies built up the ideal Hollywood action hero, men often known for their muscular forms and entertaining films. However, some of the best hero actors have played excellent villains too.
Action stars are often some of the most at-risk stars when it comes to typecasting, making it natural for many of them to try and spread to other roles and genres. For many, playing a bad guy has brought out the best in their skills as an actor, with some of their biggest fans praising those roles as their greatest work. While these stars are still best known for their franchise heroes, their villainous roles should be appreciated too.

Happy Valentine’s Day from The B-Side! Here we talk about movie directors! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between.
Today we appreciate one of the great, under-appreciated Hollywood directors: Peter Hyams! Our B-Sides include Peeper, Hanover Street, The Star Chamber, 2010: The Year We Make Contact, and Running Scared.
Our guest is Mike Ryan, great writer, interviewer, and deep fan of Hyams’ eclectic body of work. Sudden Death is a favorite, along with 2010.
We discuss the auteur versus the “workman director,” why some filmmakers gather an intense following and others don’t, and the lasting effect many of Hyams’ films have had on the culture as well as other filmmakers.
There’s much talk about Hyams’ ability as a cinematographer, and how rare it is to be a director that films their own movies.

Following the release of the Christmas classic Die Hard in 1988, Hollywood scrambled to find the next great action movie with a hero fighting villains in closed spaces. While many failed to recapture the magic of the Bruce Willis-led masterpiece, others, such as Steven Seagal’s Under Siege and Wesley Snipes’ Passenger 57, elevated their stars to result in the best movies of their respective filmographies. Similarly, martial arts icon Jean-Claude Van Damme balanced vulnerability and kick-ass action in 1995’s Sudden Death.

It’s always cool when we have the chance to watch action heroes venture into horror territory. We’ve seen Arnold Schwarzenegger take on the Predator, battle Satan (in End of Days), and raise a zombie daughter (in Maggie). Sylvester Stallone has taken on psycho killers in Cobra and Eye See You. Charles Bronson tracked a serial killer in 10 to Midnight. Dolph Lundgren faced off with an alien drug dealer in I Come in Peace. Jean-Claude Van Damme played both a serial killer and the killer’s heroic clone in Replicant. Steven Seagal killed vampires in Against the Dark. The list goes on… but two separate action horror projects we tragically missed out on would have given us the sight of both Van Damme and Seagal fighting Yetis, a.k.a. Abominable Snowmen!

The 1990s had plenty of action movie superstars, although many of this era's most notable heroes had lots of movies that have been hugely underrated. While this decade was categorized by major franchises as legendary sequels like Terminator 2 or the dawning of revolutionary series such as The Matrix dominated the conversation, those willing to dig below the surface will be rewarded with incredible hidden gems. As the 1980s stars like Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone continued to hit big at the box office, this was also the heyday for new heroes like Nicolas Cage, Steven Seagal, and Wesley Snipes.
The biggest action movie stars of the 1990s all had several underrated releases that have failed to maintain the same kind of pop culture dominance as their most acclaimed work. 1990s action movies thrive on absurd plots, delivering guilty pleasure with wild action and overblown theatricality. Movies like Sudden Death and Rush Hour turn their action stars into impermeable heroes. Face/Off, Total Recall and Men in Black blend sci-fi and action beautifully.
The 1990s produced plenty of brilliant action movies with ridiculous plots, but the absurdity often gives the movies some extra charm. Action movies don't always need to have the most grounded and believable plots, as long as they have compelling characters and convincing action set pieces. In some cases, a dash of absurdity can make things even more exciting and frenetic, since the story becomes harder to predict.
Many of the best action movies of the 1990s ask their audiences to believe in ludicrous concepts, but they don't necessarily push all the way into the territory of sci-fi. Even when they don't start out with absurd premises, many...

"30,000 Pop Star Fans. 300 Cops. 1 Serial Killer. No Escape." Hell yes this is going to be awesome!! WB has debuted the second official trailer for the next M. Night Shyamalan movie titled Trap, arriving in theaters in August in just another month. The first trailer dropped back in April, but this looks even better now. He's going to mess with the whole concert! Ha. Josh Hartnett stars as a father who takes his daughter to a pop star concert (inspired by Taylor Swift or Lady Gaga). However, while there they discover that the concert is all a setup to catch a serial killer. But who is the killer? He is. Yep... But that can't be the only big spoiler?! I also have a feeling Shyamalan has worked in a few other big twists that we don't know about yet... The cast includes Ariel Donoghue, Saleka Shyamalan performing as Lady Raven, Hayley Mills,...

Sudden Death finally gets a 4K Uhd release, showing wacky ice brawls and Jean-Claude Van Damme's immortal fight to the death with the Pittsburgh Penguins' mascot like never before. The film's oral history details a wild production, one that lives up to the movie's actual ridiculousness. The '90s cult classic marked the end of an era for brainless action flicks, paving the way for smarter heroes in sarcastic blockbusters.
The bonkers 'Die Hard hockey game' movie Sudden Death, starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, has received a glorious 4K Uhd release. The film has been given a new Hdr Dolby Vision Master from a 16bit 4K scan of the 35mm original camera negative, so we can now see and hear the ice fights and rooftop rumble with more crisp definition than ever before. The commentary track, interviews, and behind the scenes details help reveal one of the wildest action movie productions of the '90s.

Many action stars tried their hand at a Die Hard copycat. Sylvester Stallone had Die Hard-on-a-mountain with his action movie Cliffhanger. Wesley Snipes had Die Hard-on-a-plane with the movie Passenger 57. Steven Seagal had both Die Hard-on-a-boat with Under Siege and Die Hard-on-a-train with Under Siege 2: Dark Territory. Martial arts star Jean-Claude Van Damme would get his own copycat film in the form of Die Hard-at-a-hockey-game with the 1995 film Sudden Death. You can now take the violent hockey action home with an all-new 4K transfer with the ultra HD Blu-ray from Kino, according to the announcement on Blu-ray.com.

Watch Family Feud contestant’s ‘most confident’ podium answer ever: ‘I already knew I had it, Steve’
Family Feud contestants are under a lot of pressure when they face off at the podium, but Kendall McCoy’s self-assurance was unmatched.
Kendall faced off against his competitor, Jacob Griffin, as host Steve Harvey read them their survey question.
Steve was looking for the top four answers on the board and asked Kendall and Jacob to name “an occupation that a boy wouldn’t want his girlfriend’s father to have.”
Jacob was the first to hit his buzzer, and when Steve called on him for his answer, he responded, “Lawyer.”
Unfortunately for Jacob, his answer didn’t make it to the top four, so Kendall was given a chance to steal the board with a correct answer.
Kendall leaned over the podium and calmly spoke into his mic: “Police officer.”

The end of the 1990s was an odd time for cinema and in general. We were in the midst of Y2K, a panic over clocks and computers needing to roll over from 99 to 00, something people feared more than monsters and cults, something people really feared and fearmongered about. It was expected to be something of an apocalypse by some. So of course, Hollywood ran with it. Technology gone wrong, end of days, Satan coming to Earth, etc. We got films like Strange Days, Stigmata, eXistenZ, Virus, The Matrix, and End of Days (watch it Here), our movie today.

Street Fighter actor Jay Tavare reflects on working with Jean-Claude Van Damme on the movie's set, recalling that he was very "out of control". During the late 1980s and early '90s, Van Damme became an international action movie superstar, working constantly. A surprise Fantômas reunion took place Wednesday night (May 24th) in Oakland, California, during the final show of Mr. Bungle’s “Geek Show” tour with Melvins.
The reunion wasn’t too far out of the realm of possibility considering three of the band’s four members — Mike Patton, Trevor Dunn, and Dave Lombardo — are currently in Mr. Bungle. Once Buzz Osborne of Melvins took the stage, the supergroup’s lineup was complete, along with the bonus additions of Bungle guitarists Trey Spruance and Scott Ian.
Osborne sat in with Mr. Bungle for a rendition of The Raging Wrath of the Easter Bunny Demo track “Sudden Death” before the group launched into Fantômas’ cover of Henri Mancini‘s “Experiment in Terror” (featured on the band’s 2001 album The Director’s Cut). Fan footage captured the performance, which went off without a hitch as the band nailed the intricate loud-soft dynamics.

This episode of The Black Sheep was Written, Narrated, and Edited by Lance Vlcek, Produced by Lance Vlcek and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
I’ll always have a soft spot for the horror of the late ’90s. It wasn’t the best of the decade, but it does contain that silly and ambitious mix of dark edginess and psychological tension. Coming somewhat from the boom of the ’90s type of thriller, the religious horror resurgence came out of changing tastes. And though it didn’t all work out, there was a style and tone that I’ll always love. So what happens when an action superstar tries to grow while the genre around him changes into a different beast? You get the ridiculous but damn fun End of Days (watch it Here) on this episode of The Black Sheep.
Context of the time is crucial for...

Todd McFarlane's long-gestating Spawn movie is reportedly back on track with a new screenwriter, but even if it's a reboot ignoring the previous adaptation, there'd be no better person to star in the lead role than Michael Jai White. In the original Spawn, which was released in 1997, White starred as Al Simmons, the man who dies and comes back to Earth as the titular vigilante Hellspawn. There were early plans for a sequel following Spawn's release, but the project died in development hell.
In the years since, McFarlane has been working on getting a new live-action adaptation of Spawn off the ground. There were reports of Jamie Foxx boarding the project in 2018 to play a new incarnation of Al Simmons with plans to shoot in 2019, but for whatever reason, that date came and went with no real progress made on the project. Producer Jason Blum told ComicBook.com the...

Die Hard isn’t just lauded as perhaps the single greatest action movie ever made, as John McTiernan’s classic is also one of the most influential. John McClane’s misadventures in the Nakatomi Plaza have served as the inspiration for countless similar titles over the last 30 years, many of which are terrible, but others rank as some of the finest actioners of the modern era in their own right.
Under Siege, Passenger 57, Executive Decision, Air Force One, Con Air, Cliffhanger, Speed, Sudden Death, White House Down and Olympus Has Fallen have all taken the basic high concept formula established in Die Hard and transplanted it to battleships, planes, mountains, buses, stadiums and the White House respectively to wildly mixed results. Homaging the Bruce Willis classic is never going to go out of fashion, though, which is why Rawson Marshall Thurber’s Skyscraper looked like such a slam dunk on paper.

A homicidal hockey mascot. A firefighter-turned-fire marshal-turned-Stanley Cup Finals goalie. Lethal gym equipment. A magnificent helicopter escape plan. Lots and lots of roundhouse kicks. All of these elements and more make Sudden Death, released on this date in 1995, the most glorious action extravaganza of superstar Jean-Claude Van Damme’s career.
Essentially Die Hard At A Hockey Game, Sudden Death tells the tale of divorced former firefighter Darren McCord (Jcvd), who, after a workplace tragedy, has become a fire marshal at Pittsburgh Civic Arena. For his young son Tyler (Ross Malinger)’s birthday, Darren is bringing Tyler and daughter Emily (Whittni Wright) to the office. The occasion? Game 7 of the 1995 Stanley Cup Finals, an imagined rematch of the 1992 Stanley Cup Finals bout between the Chicago Blackhawks and the Pittsburgh Penguins. Vice President Daniel Binder (Raymond J.
