The story finds stranger Darkly Noon (Fraser) being found half-dead in the dense forest near to an isolated cabin owned by young lovers Judd and Mortensen. They bring Darkly Noon back to their home and nurse him to health, but he seems to take an unhealthy liking to Judd, participating in all kinds of voyeuristic activities (such as masturbating aggressively whilst spying on her through a peep-hole).
The film spends an inordinate amount of time trying to create an oppressive atmosphere. It takes place during an unbearably hot summer, much of the action occurs in an impossibly dense wood, and other scenes take place in claustrophobic nearby caves. Clearly the director wants you to feel and experience the oppressive atmosphere as if you are really there. But although this comes across all too clearly, in spending so much effort setting up the atmosphere the film loses out in other significant areas. The characters and the plot don't evolve in any interesting way and remain disappointingly shallow all the way to the end. The action is separated by long, tedious stretches during which nothing much actually happens. The sexual tension supposedly running through the film is frequently neglected in favour of visual flourishes and yet more atmospherics.
The Passion of Darkly Noon may interest those who like the slow-burning Twin Peaks style of drama. As for others, it is not likely to be a memorable experience.
"The Passion of Darkly Noon" is another excellent and underrated movie of director Philip Ridley. I do not understand how this awesome director has only two movies in his filmography (the other is fantastic "The Reflecting Skin"). Today I have watched "The Passion of Darkly Noon" for the second time and this movie still very impressive. The story has drama, romance, eroticism and suspense, supported by magnificent direction, top-notch performances, beautiful landscapes and an awesome soundtrack. In 1995, Brendan Fraser proved for me that he is a great actor with his performance of a young man living in a conflictive situation between his religious credo and his carnal desire in spite of being miscast, since his character is a kid and Brendan was twenty-seven year-old in 1995, the same age of the sexy Ashley Judd (both were born in 1968). This gorgeous actress in her first lead role has an extremely sexy performance, with some of the hottest scenes of the cinema history with the great actor Viggo Mortensen. Unfortunately this disturbing movie is recommended for very specific audiences only. My vote is eight.
Title (Brazil): "Paixões na Floresta" ("Passions in the Forest")
The story follows on as Darkly is very religious Callie a free-
spirited girl and Darkly cant stand it because he looks up to his
parent and they taught how things should be.
Callie doesn't seem to agree and thinks life should be free and having
desires and love is not a crime.
His jealousy grows when Callie's boyfriend returns Darkly seems to be having some deep feelings for Callie which he can not control.
I thought this film was very intense and dark it was one of Brendan Fraser's darkest roles i've ever seen he played the role with sensitivity and vulnerability.
