    A comedy to everyone's liking

As soon as the comedy was released it became a nation-wide success in Russia. It is brilliant in every way: the plot, the actors, the spirit of merrymaking - all this makes the comedy a national favourite. The comedy allows Russians to have a good laugh at themselves as it highlights popular Russian beliefs, makes fun of the fabulous Russian vodka-drinking and spinning yarn stories of hunters. The whole cast of actors has immediately become tremendously popular. It is a kind comedy, without excessive use of four-letter words though not entirely without them. As far as the plot is concerned the story goes on like this: a group of friends (an army general, police investigator, a writer, a young intellectual, a Finn and a forester) are about to go hunting. The Finn is eager to see a real Russian hunt with borzois, horsemen, aristocratic finery. In reality his companions drink a lot while getting ready for the hunt, get into uproariously funny straits, send a cow flying in a super modern bomber, hunt the said cow and so on. If you have a chance to see it, don't miss it. The comedy is worth seeing even if you are not a Russian. Hunters will be hunters everywhere and they will always spin yarns.

    Solid flick

For anyone who has ever been to Russia or is amused by the hijinks of drunken men, this film is a must-see. While the film hits on a lot of stereotypes, many of the characters are right-on, especially the Army general. The plot moves well and the conversation does not lag - these Russian actors are quiete funny.

What shall we do with drunken hunter?

I should like to underline the movie is NOT for abstinents since from a point of view it may be seen as "only about drinking" movie. The story starts when a young Finn comes to experience real Russian hunt. He has had plenty of dreams about it, so they appear randomly in the film. The reality directs him to the absurd reality that only people with delirium tremens may have known - his companions simple refuse to stop their spiritual way to nowhere and if they luckily are sober, everything turns to even greater absurdity (finding the pineapple in Siberia is my favourite one).

Note: Watch it subtitled only, because a lot of jokes are based on Russian x Finish lingual dissimilarity, which obviously cannot be understood when dubbed.

    Peculiarities of the national humor

"Peculiarities of the National Hunt" by Aleksandr Rogozhkin is the funniest and most popular comedy of the 90s. Scenes of Russian modern hunting with the participation of the ever-drunk general, the company of his friends, a Finnish guy and a huntsman masterfully alternate with hunting scenes of hunting in Russia of the 19th century. Despite the fact that the amount of vodka drunk is measured in boxes, the characters of the general, the huntsman and the young Finn became popular favorites. The best roles in the career of Aleksey Buldakov, Viktor Bychkov and Ville Haapasalo.

    • Trivia
As Raivo gets acquainted with the group, one of them cracks that the Russian elephant is the best friend of the Finnish elephant, a line which leaves the Finn completely bewildered. This is a reference to a well-known Soviet joke poking fun at academics whose adherence to the party line often resulted in nonsense. The joke: Competing to write a book on African elephants, a Frenchman produces a volume on the love lives of elephants; a German writes a 21-volume series titled "A Brief Introduction to the African Elephant", and the Soviet writer comes up with just one sentence: "The African elephant is the best friend of the Soviet elephant."
