In terms of actual financial losses, Willard Huyck's 1986 bonkers fantasy/comedy "Howard the Duck," based on a Marvel Comics character, is hardly the biggest bomb of all time. It earned $38 million on a $37 million budget. That's a large bomb by the weird standards of Hollywood accounting, of course, but "Howard the Duck" didn't lose nearly as much money as, say, "Krull" from three years previous. It's also not the first Marvel movie, as some believe.
In terms of its reputation, however, "Howard the Duck" might be one of the most notorious bombs of all time. It was a weird concept to receive blockbuster levels of cash, and many were baffled by the fact that George Lucas was one of the film's producers. The film is about a live-action anthropomorphic duck named Howard (voice of Chip Zien) who is sucked to Earth from a parallel duck dimension. He is lost...

Lyle and Erik Menendez, the brothers who are responsible for the 1989 murder of their parents, Kitty and José Menendez, told their story together for the first time in nearly 30 years in a new Netflix documentary released Monday.
The brutal murder took place in the family’s Beverly Hills home. The boys stormed into their house with shotguns firing several shots at both of their parents. While an elaborate shopping spree that followed the murders led the public to believe they did it for their inheritence, the boys claimed that the violence came from a darker place.
Both Erik and Lyle testified that their father emotionally and sexually abused them for years, which they say led them to kill them both for their own safety.
After a hung jury that resulted in a mistrial, the brothers were convicted of murder in the first degree and were sentenced to life in prison...

Once upon a time in late night television, it was customary for talk shows to fill up their couches as the evening's episode progressed. The first guest would do their segment and then move down a spot on the adjacent couch, making room for the next guest to yap with Johnny Carson, Dick Cavett or whoever. What with the barnacle presence of sidekick Ed McMahon, Carson's couch could get especially crowded some nights. Sometimes this got tense (like the time Burt Reynolds inexplicably went after "Double Dare" host Mark Summers on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno"); sometimes it was chaotic comedy bliss (which is what happens when you ask Carson to rein in the irrepressible duo of Robin Williams and Jonathan Winters); and sometimes it was just plain surreal.
This tradition started to fade out of fashion in the 1980s when "Late Night with David Letterman" introduced its one-guest-at-a-time approach.

The late Anna Nicole Smith would be delighted to see her identical daughter now.
Seriously. They have a case of intergenerational twinning.
For years, Larry Birkhead and Dannielynn have honored Anna Nicole Smith’s memory. Until now, Dannielynn was a child — one with no memory of her dearly departed, widely beloved mother.
Now, Dannielynn is 18 — and she’s the spitting image of Anna Nicole.

It’s a bit of an irony that just as NBC’s “Must-See TV” juggernaut took off in 1994, execs there found themselves right in the middle of a completely different kind of televised spectacle: The O.J. Simpson arrest, trial and eventual acquittal.
Not only was then-nbc West Coast president Don Ohlmeyer one of Simpson’s best friends, but just a month before the killings of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman — followed by Simpson’s white Ford Bronco flight from justice and arrest — NBC had passed on a pilot starring the ex-football-star.
“It was just a strange time to be there because of Don’s loyalty to O.J.,” recalled Preston Beckman, who was NBC’s head of scheduling at the time, and one of Ohlmeyer’s and NBC Entertainment president Warren Littlefield’s key lieutenants. Ohlmeyer would occasionally bring up Simpson during the network’s afternoon meetings in their Burbank offices,...

“The Tonight Show” host Jimmy Fallon apologized to his staffers this week after a damning Rolling Stone report alleged a work environment marred by his toxic behavior on set — and it’s not the first time the former “Saturday Night Live” star has come under fire for his actions. He’s previously been criticized for not paying his writers during the currently WGA strike, for instance, and for that infamously playful 2016 interview with former President Donald Trump.
Other late night hosts have also crossed the line on a number of occasions, with Jimmy Kimmel, Jay Leno and David Letterman also issuing statements, or on-air mea culpas, asking viewers to forgive their missteps and misdeeds.
Here are some of the most scandalous moments in late night TV.

Australian satirist Barry Humphries, known for his onstage and TV drag persona Edna Everage and for his character Sir Les Patterson, has died. He was 89.
The BBC reported that Humphries had been in hospital in Sydney, Australia, and had been suffering from complications following surgery in March.
“A great wit, satirist, writer and an absolute one-of-kind, he was both gifted and a gift,” Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said following the news of Humphries’ death.
“Rip Barry Humphries – one of the greatest ever Australians – and a comic genius who used his exuberant alter egos, Dame Edna Everage and Sir Les Patterson, to say the otherwise unsayable. Also an infallibly brilliant Spectator contributor. What a loss,” said former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Twitter.

The late-night television sector will be the first to get hit if there’s a writers strike, and its stars are bracing themselves for impact.
The nightly talk shows – The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Late Night with Seth Meyers and The Daily Show as well as Saturday Night Live – will be among the first high-profile shows dealing with the fallout of a strike if the Writers Guild of America and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers can’t reach an agreement by May 1.
Kimmel and Colbert, the latter of which previously hosted Comedy Central’s The Colbert Report, will remember first-hand what happened last time there was a writers strike in 2007-08. Meyers was on Saturday Night Live during that period.

The odds that “Jimmy Kimmel Live” would still be here, 20 years after its launch on Jan. 26, 2003, were astronomically low. The network hadn’t done a traditional late-night talk show since the short-lived “Into the Night With Rick Dees” in 1991, and the time slot’s previous inhabitant, “Politically Incorrect,” had been canceled due to declining ratings — and controversy over 9/11-related comments host Bill Maher had made.
Those early reviews were rough and the show struggled in its early months to book guests. And soon, Kimmel’s biggest backer at the network, then-abc chairman Lloyd Braun, was out the door.
But there was a glimmer of promise from the start: Early on, ABC execs said they were encouraged by the show’s first week national ratings, especially among young male viewers..

Madonna's first performance of "Like a Virgin" should have been her undoing. At least that's what she was told. Joe Biden will make his first late night guest appearance as president on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” on Friday evening, Fallon announced via social media Thursday.
Though Biden’s appearance will be virtual, the last time we saw him grace the late night stage was during Barack Obama’s two terms. Donald Trump opted out of the late night TV landscape, but the 44th president was a trailblazer — Obama’s in-studio guest appearance on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” in 2009 was actually the first of its kind for any sitting U.S. president. It’s no secret that the U.K. has lost some of its most talented to seemingly greener pastures in Hollywood, especially black British performers, for whom there’s a scarcity of opportunity back home. The so-called black British invasion has been well-documented and scrutinized over the years, so much that veteran actor Lenny Henry warned British broadcasters in 2014, that Britain was “haemorrhaging” black talent to the States. Comedian, writer, and actress Gina Yashere is a case in point.

The week is just beginning, but we need to talk about "Friday," as in the song. It turns out this Monday marks the 9-year anniversary of the viral song, which Rebecca Black released when she was 13-years-old. At the time, it was widely-panned, but also led to many opportunities for the then-teen, including appearances on The Tonight Show With Jay Leno and a cameo in Katy Perry's "Last Friday Night" music video. It even ended up being covered by Ryan Murphy's Glee, because, in his words, "love it or hate it, that song is pop culture." But, with success comes challenges, many of which Rebecca's had to face. Vying for the heart of Howard Stern co-host Robin Quivers isn’t for the weak. So “American Idol” alum Jackie Tohn, who stars in the Netflix wrestling comedy “Glow,” threw herself into the ring, recruiting Stern song parody veteran Eli Bradon for a pair of parodies that had Stern and his SiriusXM listeners in stitches.
Tohn’s two collaborations with Braden — raunchy love songs to Quivers set to Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper’s sultry duet of “Shallow” from “A Star is Born,” and a positively filthy take on Cher’s “Believe” — both received big praise from Stern, who said the “Shallow” duet, which encouraged Quivers to try hooking up with girls, gave him “chills.”
“Fred is tearing up right now,” he laughed.
Getting the song on the show, Tohn said, and having Stern give her a big plug was one of the “biggest highlights of my career,” she tells Variety.

How a 1994 indie hit from Kevin Smith gave birth to an unlikely franchise...
In 1993, Kevin Smith made a movie. Clerks was shot in black and white over the course of three weeks, at night, in the convenience store where Smith worked during the day, on a shoestring budget of $27,575. Smith funded the film himself by dipping into his savings, selling all his comics and maxing out several credit cards.
Even though it became an indie phenomenon when it was picked up by Bob and Harvey Weinstein's Miramax (who gave it a new soundtrack using a post-production budget that was ten times the cost of principal photography) at the 1994 Sundance Film Festival, it doesn't have 'franchise starter' written all over it.
Long considered a Gen X touchstone, Clerks is a funny and filthy slice of life movie, which equates a working day for Dante Hicks (Brian O'Halloran) to his namesake's Inferno.

It's no secret Taylor Swift and Kanye West haven't had the steadiest of relationships through the years. The pair's bad blood first became news when the rapper ambushed Swift's acceptance speech for Video of the Year at the 2009 MTV VMAs - which he later apologized for. But after years of tension and a long-awaited reconciliation, Swift and West are back to where they started, following the rapper's February release of "Famous" off his The Life of Pablo album (which made jabs at the "New Romantics" crooner) and wife Kim Kardashian West's recent claims that Swift knew of West's plans to release the track.
