    More bizarre than funny

TODAY'S HERO is an odd low budget comedy from Hong Kong, starring Kenny Bee as a loser and wannabe gangster whose attempts to become rich and famous always fall flat. For the first half of the running time this plays out as one comic set-piece after another, usually involving hijinks as Bee and either his friends or his sister and her family get into various scrapes and situations. The humour is random and only of interest to those already familiar with the wackier aspects of Chinese comedy. The second half brings in a plot of sorts involving Maggie Cheung's reporter, but it's so lightweight and slapdash that it's difficult to describe; the climactic scenes set over the Chinese border seem particularly random. Saying that, it does have a lot of energy to recommend it, and Bee certainly gives it his all, so it's not all bad. Shing Fui-on steals all of his scenes as a cop friend.
