The Treasure

A film so ridiculously deritive that you know what's going to happen as the opening credits come up. A film so bad that you don't care. The three kids mysteriously grow 4-5 inches in some scenes, obviously shot months later in order to help out the plot or because the filmmakers ran out of money and couldn't shoot the film all at once.

The deus-ex-machina ending is acted so badly that all actors and crew should hang their head in shame.

Ok. I'll have to admit that I watched 60 seconds of this and threw it out. The reson for this is because they broke my cardinal rule: Do not begin a movie with violence (especially murder). This type of scene requires some context, so must be led-up-to. The manipulation involved, here, makes me angry: We are supposed to view the murder of this lighthouse keeper and then just ignore that it ever happend and sail blithely along into the next, unrelated scene. Is this an attempt at de-sensitization? Or is the screen-writer and producer simply without any decency or morals?

The fact that this is a children's move makes the sin doubly-egregious.

You're probably thinking that I am over-estimating the importance or the influence these types of messages sends to kids, that murder is nothing to reject or oppose, that violence is "just a part of life".

Tell the story. Don't force-feed us your apathy and amorality. If you are going to include violence or murder in the story, at least give us a context and a reason.

Every time I went to my grandparents to spend the night, we would go to the video store and rent this. It was a tradition that I miss now as an adult. The last time I saw it was when I was in Jr. High, I think, and I was spending the night with my cousins (one is 6 years younger than me, and the other is 7 years younger). We rented this and another film, and the one cousin was like, "lets not rent Treasure, it looks dumb!" The next morning, when my aunt asked her son if he had fun, he was like, "I liked the movie Mindy rented (Treasure) better than the one Katie rented (Monkey Trouble)" This movie rocks, and even kids today can enjoy it! I think it was amusing that it took several times viewing it to realize that the one guys name was Dub, not Tub! I think I would have preferred Tub. It was so much fun to call him that. I'd recommend this movie to any kid looking for an adventure story.

Intense action scenes...enticing wardrobe...quixotic narrations... What more can you say about this delectable movie? Three teeny boppers find an abandoned boatyard in Emerald Cove.

If you thought that the Goonies was the signature movie for the 90's, you haven't been on the tumultuous ride that Treasure takes you on. Treasure has you biting your nails and cracking your knuckles at the same time. It keeps you on the edge of your seat wondering what these crazy kids are going to do next.

The film quality is impeccable. The sound quality is even more delicious. The adventure these kids take you on leaves you spun out at the end, wanting more. The villains are truly frightful, and the reality of using real overweight actors shows the heart of America, the overweight fast-food society of our generation.

Treasure is the signature movie for the adventures children of the 90's. If you have any culture in film-making or even film watching, Treasure is truly a family hit you don't want to miss. Two thumbs very up.

Sequel anyone?

This is one of those movies that I loved because despite its efforts to be a normal, children's adventure tale, it actually turns out to be a comic gem. Why? The acting, the plot, the dialogue, the characters. This is one of those movies that made me exclaim "It hurts!!!" because I was laughing so hard. (Also check out "Trucks" for this same effect. I am 21 and I love this movie (maybe I'm just immature and easily entertained). I would give a lot to have this movie released on dvd with director/cast commentary.
