Men at Work

Revisiting Madhur Bhandarkar’s Aan: Men At Work As It Clocks 21 Years. Shatrughan Sinha Speaks
Image
Subhash K Jha takes a look back at Madhur Bhandarkar’s Aan: Men At Work and we hear from Shatrughan Sinha about the joy of making the film.

Actually, there are many men at work–both on and off screen—in Aan: Men At Work. While the cop-heroes sweat it out in their humid halos, the men behind the scenes also make their presence felt in rapidfire motions in this emotionless pictureshow . No sobbing Matajis(thank God!) but loads of slithering and sliding Mata Haris.

There’s of course director Madhur Bhandarkar, in his first foray into frenzied action. Big guns with bigger nozzles attached to them—of both the human and the mechanical mind—strut around with such exaggerated machismo , it becomes hard to tell the bad and good guys apart. Bhandarkar treats his heroes and villains (all festooned to the plot with formulistic splendour) like characters in an extended videogame for juvenile grownups.

The Fate of 'Found' Has Finally Been Decided by NBC
Image
After two seasons, NBC made the decision to lose Found. Among several cancellations at NBC like Night Court and Suits LA, unfortunately, the weekly procedural thriller also just didn’t make the cut, with NBC deciding the title will come to an end after its second season wraps in a few weeks. With just two episodes left and no heads-up given, it’s likely that the finale will leave audiences on a cliffhanger that will never get resolved. After a whirlwind season that has so far seen Gabi (Shanola Hampton) lose the upper hand on her ex-captor, Sir (Mark-Paul Gosselaar), the cancellation will come as a punch in the gut to audiences who have been eager to follow the pair’s cat and mouse game.

First debuting in the fall of 2023, Found introduced viewers to a different kind of procedural. While many similar titles have followed the police as they work on cracking a case,...

Nancy Zamit, Greg Tannahill, Jonathan Sayer, Chris Leask, Charlie Russell, Henry Shields, Henry Lewis, Bryony Corrigan, and Dave Hearn in The Goes Wrong Show (2019)
Hot Shots! | Why 20th Century Fox nearly had to abandon its 1991 spoof
Nancy Zamit, Greg Tannahill, Jonathan Sayer, Chris Leask, Charlie Russell, Henry Shields, Henry Lewis, Bryony Corrigan, and Dave Hearn in The Goes Wrong Show (2019)
The 1991 spoof Hot Shots! found itself to a small degree mirroring the front pages of the newspapers – and 20th Century Fox was worried.

Save for a few sporadic examples – the first Scary Movie, for instance, and more recently The Goes Wrong Show on the BBC – it feels like the era of the successful screen spoof came to a juddering halt in the 1990s. In 1993, we had the second of two Hot Shots! films, and in 1994 the Naked Gun trilogy came to an end. After those? It was slim pickings.

There were further attempts to breathe fresh life into the spoof – Spy Hard, Jane Austen’s Mafia!, Wrongfully Accused – but nothing that could live up to some of the movies we got in the 80s and early 90s.

In 1991 in particular, the spoof was a box office draw. This was the year when many big budget Hollywood productions came in well below box office expectations.

10 Cheesiest '90s Movies, Ranked
Image
Thankfully, not all movies are Oscar bait and sometimes the best form of escapism is turning on a movie that doesnt require too much attention or analysis. Cheesy movies with clich love stories, nonsensical plots and one-dimensional characters arent always box office gold, but they can become cult classics.

Cheesy movies dont need A-list stars like Jennifer Lawrence or Leonardo DiCaprio, although they can be places to spot such stars before they become household names. All a good cheesy movie needs is a ridiculous story, silly humor, and a few memorable lines for audiences to appreciate the camp, even decades later.

What The Thing Cast Has Done Since 1982
Image
The Thing (1982) had a strong and talented cast led by Kurt Russell. Kurt Russell went on to have an impressive career and has recently starred in major movies, such as Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and The Fast and the Furious series. The Thing cast also included Keith David, Wilford Brimley, and T.K. Carter, among others.

The Thing is a classic horror film from 1982, and here is everything that the cast has done since the film's conclusion. The film follows a team of researchers who are determined to study an alien spacecraft that has been found in Antarctica. Image
Fandoms everywhere can now rejoice, for in October Our Flag Means Death finally returns to our screens for its second season. Rhys Darby and Taika Waititi will be romancing the high seas once more thanks to an enormous outpouring of love and support from the show’s fans. The safety of the cult favorite is not yet known beyond season two, but if this one is as good as the first, it certainly won’t be for lack of trying.

Talking of little shows that could, Doom Patrol is back for its last ever block of episodes, having long outlasted the many of the other ill-fated DC streaming series. Season two of The Gilded Age is also streaming this month, with Bertha challenging both Mrs. Astor and the old system in this new run.

And if none of that is up your street, there’s always Jason Statham punching sharks in the face,...

That '70s Show Star Danny Masterson Has Been Convicted Of Rape, Sentenced To 30 Years In Prison
Image
Former sitcom star and high-profile member of the Church of Scientology Danny Masterson has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for violent crimes a jury says he committed during the height of his "That 70's Show" fame, per Variety. The actor was sentenced today on charges of forcible rape stemming back to the early 2000s; he was found guilty on two of the counts, while the jury reportedly ended up deadlocked on a third charge.

Masterson was once known for playing Steven Hyde, an anti-authority teen stoner and fan-favorite character on the long-running sitcom "That '70s Show." His other credits include movies like "Yes Man" and "Dracula 2000" and roles on sitcoms like "Men at Work" and "The Ranch" (the latter a Netflix series that reunited Masterson with former "'70s Show" costar Ashton Kutcher before he was fired in 2017). It was Masterson's fame that his victims and prosecutors in...

New Pornographers Are Very Online and Not Super Happy About It on ‘Continue as a Guest’
Image
Over the course of their 20-plus-year career, the New Pornographers have often specialized in catchy ambiguity. If leader Carl Newman was just a machine cranking out power-pop tunes, it would get boring. But there’s also a lot of mixed emotions going on under the surface of their studiously nuanced pop-rock formalism — like if Cheap Trick was as quick-witted as Steely Dan, or the Romantics were as throughtful as Rem. The Canadian band’s iconic 2000 debut, Mass Romantic, was a masterclass in hook-mad fun highlighted by songs with resolutely unfun...

Iranian-Canadian Filmmaker Mani Haghighi Reflects on His Hitchcockian Thriller ‘Subtraction’
Image
“Subtraction,” from idiosyncratic Iranian helmer-writer Mani Haghighi is a tense Hitchcockian thriller set in Tehran, where a heavy, non-stop rainfall signals a lingering malaise. There, a young couple come across their doppelgängers. The film premiered at the Toronto festival.

The idea for the plot grew out of the helmer’s long-ago trip to Southwest Iran to look at places where the Iran-Iraq war took place.

“It was a hot summer day and I wandered into a local mosque to cool down and get some rest,” Haghighi says. “The people who ran the mosque had put on an exhibition of photographs from the war years. I was casually looking at these pictures and I was suddenly transfixed by one of them. It was a picture of me, in military uniform, badly wounded in the neck, being carried by two other soldiers. As one of the characters says in ‘Subtraction,’ ‘It’s...

'Tale of the Sea' ('Hekayat-e Darya'): Film Review
Bahman Farmanara
Tale of the Sea (Hekayat-e Darya) is Bahman Farmanara’s resonant elegy to the conclusion of an artistic era and his salute to a generation of Iranian writers, artists, musicians and filmmakers who are leaving the scene. Abbas Kiarostami, who died just over a year ago, is the name most international viewers will recognize, but many more are mentioned in this simple, atmospheric tale. It is the writer-director-producer’s most personal film since Smell of Camphor, Fragance of Jasmine and has the same kind of melancholy wistfulness. A starry cast including Fatemeh Motamed-Arya (Gilane, Men at Work), Leila Hatami (A Separation) and...

A new character will debut in Flash episode 13 and will stick around at least until episode 14, that being the good intentioned leader of Gorilla City (The home of the sentient Apes in the comics, and apparently the CW show Flash), another ape, Solovar. If your left hand is evil, you hold Grodd, and if your right hand has good intentions then you cradle Solovar. This ape has been around the comics for a long time, and while he has had evil tendencies at times, Solovar is typically the logically thinking leader controlling Gorilla City.

Today, we learn that Solovar will join us, and I for one being an Apetivist am happy to learn that not all Gorillas will be evil in the show. Or so we are led to believe. For all we know, Solovar could be highly irritated that Barry threw Grodd into their world, disrupting their ape-lives and Solovar now seeks revenge.

7 Movies That Should've Starred Charlie Sheen
Love him or hate him, you have to admit one thing about Charlie Sheen: The guy is pretty damn entertaining.

The man who stole the 2011 media spotlight from every other celebrity with his bizarre behavior and madcap yammerings is currently making a comeback on the big screen, continuing this weekend with his turn in "Scary Movie 5." If the trailers and clips are any indication, Charlie doesn't do much in the movie beyond hang out in bed with Lindsay Lohan — which is, of course, just fine.

It's not enough, though. We want even more Charlie Sheen movies. So while we continue to wait patiently for real Charlie Sheen movies like "Machete Kills" (he plays the President of the United States in that one) and make-believe Charlie Sheen movies like "Hot Shots! Part Trois" (or even the fraternal reunion "Men at Work 2: Still Working"), here are seven movies that could've used some Sheen.

9 Secretly Beautiful Hollywood Screenwriters
If you're stoked on "Stoker," you can thank "Prison Break" star Wentworth Miller, who is making his screenwriting debut with the gothic Park Chan-wook affair. Miller wrote the script under a pseudonym, and the results ended up on the 2010 Black List of hot screenplays that weren't yet snagged by studios.

Wentworth, we hardly knew ye!

Miller isn't the only surprising star doing double-duty as a writer, either. He joins an impressive list of famous, Hollywood faces that wield a mean pen or, more likely, the latest version of Final Draft.

Rashida Jones

Her "Parks and Rec" alter ego Ann Perkins is "a beautiful tropical fish" and "a beautiful, rule-breaking moth," and even "a beautiful, talented, brilliant, powerful musk ox," on occasion, according to her Bff Leslie Knope (Amy Poehler). Off-screen, Rashida Jones is proving to be a rather formidable creative force as well. She and writing partner Will McCormack penned...

Summer Recap: From Olympics To ‘Newsroom,’ The Season’s Highs and Lows
By Rachel Bennett

Television Editor & Columnist

***

A week ago, Breaking Bad finished the first half of its fifth and final season. In other words, summer TV has ended.

Although some shows, such as FX’s Louie and AMC’s Hell on Wheels, still have more episodes to go before their seasons conclude, NBC will be unveiling some of its new fall series this week — and the other networks won’t be too far behind.

To be honest, summer TV isn’t my favorite. I use the season to catch up on TV I’ve missed more than I do to watch such new offerings as TBS’s Men at Work and E!’s Married to Jonas.

However, this doesn’t mean all of summer TV is a bust.

Here are the choices for the brightest and darkest spots of summer TV 2012:

Biggest Disappointment

The Newsroom (HBO)

It’s no...

FX automatically gives Charlie Sheen's Anger Management 90 more episodes
With the sound of klaxons blaring and meme airlocks being sealed, Charlie Sheen's Anger Management has triggered its automatic 90-episode pickup, FX relayed in a statement filled with similarly automatically generated platitudes. According to the network, the show has met both its "designated average ratings threshold" and acceptable minimum definition of "comedy," becoming the highest-rated new sitcom on cable in 2012 (to the coincidental chagrin of Men At Work, we guess). The network expressed dutiful excitement about maintaining that plateau and extending its bargain with the self-aware devil for at least the next two years it will take to ...

6 places ‘Community’ Creator Dan Harmon & Like-Minded Showrunners Can Shop a Comedy
It appears NBC’s former problem child, Dan Harmon may have found a new home. TV Guide reported earlier today that the former Community showrunner is close to a deal to bring an untitled multi-camera comedy pilot to Fox, his first major move since being booted from the NBC clever-but-cult-favorite comedy he created. Harmon is also hard at work in developing an animated series called Rick & Morty for Adult Swim.

Since becoming a darling with fans and some of the media, New Girl has expanded Fox’s idea of what makes for a good comedy. For one, it’s Not animated. Animated series are not a bad thing, but outside of Raising Hope, and before New Girl was a hit, the only comedies Fox seemed willing to develop were spinoffs of Family Guy. The climate is changing at Fox as former Community executive producers Neil Goldman and Garrett Donovan are...

Anger Management (2012)
Cable Ratings: Anger Management Rebounds, Project Runway Stumbles, Awkward Rises
Anger Management (2012)
Anger Management reversed two weeks of downward trending with a visit from Charlie Sheen’s ex-wife Denise Richards — and with nary a champagne bottle in sight.

FX’s freshman comedy this Thursday drew 2.65 million total viewers, with 1.42 mil landing in the coveted 18-49 demo, marking week-to-week gains of 9 and 13 percent, respectively.

The series was also up in the Men 18-34 (+26%) and Women 18-34 (+45%) demos.

Wait, it just hit me: Richards was in Wild Things, and Sheen played “Wild Thing” in Major League. I just let out a Keanu Reeves-like whoa.

Elsewhere on Thursday:

Trailer Time: The Way, starring Martin Sheen and directed by Emilio Estevez
People forget, but former Brat Packer Emilio Estevez has been directing films since 1986's Wisdom. He went from that to the underrated garbage men flick, Men at Work, in 1990. I count that as one of the personal favorites of my teen years because it was so damn stupid. Bowling with trash can lids? Who does that? Estevez made his first truly credible film in 2006 with the multi-character JFK film...

Red-Carpet Interviews, Portraits: Martin Sheen, Emilio Estevez Find ‘The Way’
Chicago – Martin Sheen’s sons certainly command the spotlight, whether it was Charlie’s adventures of this year, or the emerging auteur talent of Emilio Estevez. Estevez wrote and directed the upcoming film “The Way,” which stars his father.

The elder Sheen and Estevez have been on a nationwide tour, promoting and opening the personal film along the journey. They were in Chicago on the weekend of August 19th, as part of the Chicago International Film Festival Summer Gala. Martin Sheen was honored by the festival for his career work, receiving the Silver Hugo Award from the Founder and Artistic Director, Michael Kutza.

“The Way” stars Martin Sheen as Tom, an American physician who goes to France to collect the remains of his adult son, who accidently died while walking “The Camino de Santiago” (also called the Way of St. James, a Christian pilgrimage from many points to the Cathedral...

Martin Sheen Walks the Walk in 'The Way' Trailer
This definitely doesn't look like "Men at Work."

"The Way" definitely does look a bit meta-cryptic, though, as Martin Sheen plays a mourning father who embarks on a pilgrimage along the Camino de Santiago with his son's ashes, a free spirit (played by Sheen's real-life son, Emilio Estevez) who was killed during a storm along the famous 800-km path from the French Pyrenees to Santiago de Compostela in the north west of Spain.

Although the premise is a bit depressing, the film itself looks to be rather uplifting and inspiring with something of a "Wizard of Oz" kind of vibe as Sheen meets several other eccentric lost souls on his journey, including Deborah Kara Unger, James Nesbitt and Yorick van Wageningen.

"The Way" is Emilio Estevez's first directorial effort since his 2006 multi-character look at the assassination of Robert Kennedy, "Bobby." From the looks of it, he's definitely come a...
