Maine Pyar Kiya

David Dhawan On 20 Years Of Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya
Image
Talking with Subhash K Jha, director David Dhawan reflects on 20 years of his comedy Maine Pyar Kyun KiyaDavid one of your funniest comedies Maine Pyar Kyun Kiya Turns 20 on July 15?

Is it really twenty years? It seems like just the other day. Salman, Sushmita, Katrina, Arshad we had great fun shooting this one. With Salman I had already done several films, like Judwaa, Biwi No 1 and Mujhse Shaadi Karogi. In this one, we wanted to try something different.

Like what?

Different art direction, different sets, different characters—a little naughtier than usual—different vibes… Salman and I felt we needed to address our humour to a new generation.

This was one of Katrina Kaif’s earliest films?

She was so eager to learn. Sushmita Sen who played the other lead, made Katrina feel very comfortable. Sushmita was very supportive.

Why do you think this one didn’t succeed as...

This Day That Year: Subhash K Jha Revisits Sooraj Barjatya’s 2003 Main Prem Ki Deewani Hoon
Image
Subhash K Jha, in a new installment of his Yhis day That Year series, he revisits Sooraj Barjatya’s Main Prem Ki Deewani Hoon from 2003, that starred Hrithik Roshan, Kareena Kapoor and Abhishek Bachchan.

It’s so easy to be cynical about a film that doesn’t break the mould but instead moulds ‘the mould’ into the director’s vision. Sooraj Barjatya loves what’s sneeringly known as the masala cinema. He adores the criss-cross of ingenious relationships and the surface-level interaction of light and shade that provides the collective emotional cloudburst for the masses.

His fourth film might not create history as his first and second works (Maine Pyar Kiya and Hum Aapke Hain Koun) did. But in serenading the status-quo Sooraj Barjatya provides us with the comforting joy of the familiar.

This time, Sooraj whittles down the labyrinthine family ties that characterized his great trilogy of family mellow-dramas.

On Imtiaz Ali’s 54th Birthday Revisiting His First & Latest Films
Image
Imtiaz Ali’s debut Socha Na Tha released on 4 March, 2005 offers the comfort of muted mobility. Much of the movement afforded to this slight concoction of urban chic is self-serving and finally futile. But it’s fun while it lasts.Except for the occasional vulgarity, the dialogues by Ishan Trivedi are supple and tongue-in-cheek. But like much of what goes into the plot, the words are finally more emblems of contemporary connectivity than real people caught in situations of real interaction. Whether it’s the hero breaking into a jig at a traffic jam or the heroine making a face in the mirror, you know these youngsters are getting cute for the camera.

The whole ambience exudes a kind of enthusiastic youthful energy that Farhan Akhtar conceptualised for his trend-setting urban fable Dil Chahta Hai. In fact, the film’s theme of a don’t-care-a-damn dude’s falling in love...

11 Years Of Nitin Kakkar’s Filmistan
Image
Filmistaan would have been an outrageously funny film were it not for the profoundly moving underbelly that it secretes with such fluency and spontaneity. The film could have become a gallery of clichés about Indo-Pak harmony. A sort of Veer-Zara turned into a Veru and Zara-uddin who become friends in Pakistani soil while guns boom all around them.

Sachindra Vats edits the scenes down to the minimum when required. But generally he lets the characters develop naturally even if the process takes some time. The film is shot in authentic locations by cinematographer Subhransu Das who brings to the table an enticing aura of believability. The dialogues written by the film’s lead Sharib Hashmi never become top-heavy with message-mongering, nor does the going get excessively verbose as it did in the recent cross-border film Kya Dilli Kay Lahore.

It’s astonishing how director Nitin Kakkar averts all the corny...

Subhash K Jha Revisits 21 Years Of Uff….Kya Jaadoo Mohabbat Hai
Image
Subhash K Jha revisits 2004’s innocent romantic comedy Uuf Kya Jaadoo Mohabbat Hai and also shares a fascinating behind-the-music fact!

This Rajshri production takes us back to the arcadian innocence of puppy love in Raj Kapoor’s Bobby where young people just wanna have fun, and the birds and the bees can go fly a kite…

The Rajshris deserve credit for returning to the theme of innocent love at a time when Hindi cinema candidly addresses adultery, pre-marital sex, and abortion (see the other release Yuva), and where protagonists have healthy sexual appetites. Yash (Sammir Dattani) and Pari (Pooja Kanwal) strike us as cutely conspicuous anachronisms, out of step with the cinematic definition of man-woman relationships.

Love, according to the time-warped Rajshris , is meaningless when fastened to sex. In Uuf Kya Jaadoo Mohabbat Hai, while the young love-birds have fun, another couple(newcomers Mini Tiwari and Aziz) have sex.

Try to figure that equation out,...

Salman Khan’s remarkable journey to fame began with filmmaker Sooraj Barjatya’s 1989 romantic-musical masterpiece Maine Pyar Kiya. In an astonishing revelation, the movie maker once stated that Salman refused the lead parts repeatedly and was willing to recommend his friends instead.

At that period, Salman was doing a supporting character in Biwi Ho Toh Aisi, which featured him in a brief but memorable role. However, the director did not pay attention to him until later.

Salman Khan’s Prem Or Ranbir Kapoor’s Animal – Who Will The Audience Choose? Sooraj Barjatya Gives His Opinion
Image
Sooraj Barjatya believes the audience likes both Prem and Animal? ( Photo Credit – Instagram )

Sooraj Barjatya has long been a flag-bearer of wholesome, family-oriented cinema. His signature style, filled with traditions, and moral values, has shaped the careers of many actors – none more so than Salman Khan, who immortalized the character of Prem in films like Maine Pyar Kiya, Hum Aapke Hain Koun!, and Hum Saath Saath Hain. However, cinema has evolved dramatically since then.

Audiences have embraced darker, intense narratives, with Animal, Ranbir Kapoor’s latest blockbuster, being a prime example. Though Animal is also about family, its portrayal of love, violence, and revenge is drastically different from Barjatya’s vision of familial relationships. Given the current preference for gritty storytelling, many believe that Prem’s era is over. But does Sooraj Barjatya agree?

Sooraj Barjatya Says, “Jo Galat Karta Hai Uske Sath Animal, Jo Accha Karta Hai Uske Sath Prem”

From Maine Pyar Kiya and Hum Aapke Hai Koun…! to Hum Saath-Saath Hain, Barjatya is known for his work alongside Salman Khan. However, in 2006, he cast someone else for the lead role, which was when Vivah was made.

Starring Shahid Kapoor and Amrita Rao, the film explores the beauty of arranged marriages and the emotional journey of two individuals brought together by family ties. During the film’s promotion, Barjatya was asked whether a movie like Vivah could find an audience when live-in relationships were becoming increasingly common. Nonetheless, the movie did very well at the box office, grossing about ₹54 Crore on a budget of ₹8 Crore, and remains a timeless classic.

Image
Bollywood hitmaker Sooraj Barjatya is making his entry into digital entertainment with the series “Bada Naam Karenge,” launching on streaming platform SonyLIV. The move was driven by the platform’s unique request for family-centered content, a genre traditionally seen as counter to contemporary online viewing trends.

The filmmaker’s illustrious career includes directing some of Indian cinema’s biggest hits like “Maine Pyar Kiya” (1989), “Hum Aapke Hain Koun…!” (1994), “Vivah” (2006) and “Prem Ratan Dhan Payo” (2015) — all romances revolving around the family unit.

“We had visited lots of platforms, and they had all told us the family drama space doesn’t belong on Ott [streaming] because it belongs primarily to thrillers and action,” Barjatya tells Variety. “I was really taken aback when Sony was so forthcoming and asking us to make something from our sensibility. They wanted to bring in the ‘Hum Aapke Hain Koun’ and ‘Vivah’ audience to Ott, to expand their viewer base.

Salman Khan and Aamir Khan’s comedy-drama Andaz Apna Apna (1994), directed by Rajkumar Santoshi, was unfortunately a box-office setback. The film didn’t have a good theatrical run and was shunned by the audience.

According to Rajkumar Santoshi, Andaz Apna Apna failed not because of the story or the star cast but because the makers could not advertise it properly. In a recent interview with Doordarshan, Santoshi said that the publicity for the movie wasn’t done well, and people didn’t know it was a comedy.

Content is King: The King is Missing!
Image
Content is king is the belief the film industry has thrived upon all along. An appropriate casting as per the needs of the story completed the basics of making a film. A director craved for a good performer rather than a star and did not chase a star just for the sake of it.

It was because of content that films with no star value such as ‘Saraswatichandra’ (Manish), ‘Kora Kagaz’, ‘Dosti’ (Sudhir and Sushil) and ‘Maine Pyar Kiya’ (Salman Khan) went on to become hits. These are just a few examples.

Rajesh Khanna had delivered many flops before he could give his first hit and so had Amitabh Bachchan. When a good script that matched their talent and persona came up, it made them a star.

When a star is born thanks to a few huge hits, everybody wants to cast him and this phenomenon causes the downfall of a star.

‘Dono’ Movie Review | About love & relationships

When Sooraj Barjatya helmed his debut ‘Maine Pyar Kiya’ with Salman Khan and Bhagyashree in the lead, also debuting, Sooraj as well as Salman and Bhagyashree probably did not have any baggage and pressure to deliver.
