Neon Genesis Evangelion is a highly unique anime that became a phenomenon, both in Japan and beyond. It inspired a generation of upcoming animators and writers, who then went on to create their own spin on many of the themes and ideas of the series. While no one has quite managed to match Evangelion's incredible cultural influence, there are some amazing series out there which carry similar themes, and one of the best is Ssss.Gridman.
Evangelion is many things, which can make it quite difficult to condense into a concise description. What begins as a fairly conventional Mecha anime soon devolves as protagonist Shinji Ikari's mental state takes a nosedive. While it's not really a mystery series, the anime has plenty of intrigue surrounding exactly how the Earth has ended up in this desperate situation, battling invading Angels which seem dead set on wiping out humanity. We are currently in the midst of an international Kaiju renaissance of sorts. Godzilla Minus One won an Academy Award for its visual effects and was a hit across the globe. Meanwhile, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire was number one in the American box office for a second week in a row. And though he’s certainly “King of the Monsters,” Godzilla isn’t the only giant creature to get the spotlight. With the release of the Kaiju No. 8 anime, based off the wonderful manga by Naoya Matsumoto, the audience for stories of mysterious gargantuan creatures will grow even wider. But even if they don’t necessarily fit into the Kaiju Eiga (monster movie) subgenre of science fiction, the potency of the Kaiju has been explored in anime over and over again. There is a power to the idea of a mammoth monster with god-like strength, one that often...

The best part of loving mecha anime is the high-octane battle scenes. The sound of metal clinking, heavy-duty weapons, emotions running high, and a classic finale fusion are all that make mecha anime popular. One of the defining moments for any well-perceived mecha show is the quality and level of action portrayed in it.
No matter how well the plot has been executed or how good the characters are, a mecha anime with mediocre tech or dull battle scenes can tick the audience off almost immediately. Cult classics like Code Geass, Neon Genesis Evangelion, and Mobile Suit Gundam have featured some of anime’s most breathtaking battle scenes that the fans still haven’t gotten over.

Mecha might not be as popular as it once was, but it's still a very important and influential genre within anime. Another major form of fiction in Japan is the tokusatsu genre, which is defined in the West by the Power Rangers franchise. While Super Sentai and Kamen Rider might be the big names in the genre in Japan, a '90s series has been reborn as a mecha to give them both a run for their money.
Gridman was a Japanese tokusatsu series in the early 1990s that, beyond a briefly popular American version, didn't make a particularly huge impact. That's no longer the case, however, with the recent anime reboot of the franchise taking it to new heights. This has included sequels and anime movies, allowing the classic Hyper Agent to get bigger than ever before.

The two biggest streaming releases this week could not be more different. One is a nostalgia-fueled special based on one of the most popular franchises of the '90s, in the form of "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once & Always." The other is a brand new, original, and very bizarre TV show, "Mrs. Davis." Elsewhere, for those looking for more tokusatsu fun like "Power Rangers," there are anime series like "Ssss Dynazenon" and "Love After World Domination," which offer unique spins on the "Power Rangers" formula. Or perhaps you want something that embraces the fun of these stories while offering something more serious, like "Shin Godzilla." Similarly, while you're waiting to know more about the mystery that is "Mrs. Davis," you would do well to check out co-creator Damon Lindelof's previous work on "Lost" and its vast mythology, the darkly weird blend of sexy and funny in "Alien: Covenant,...

In a move that will shock and delight Tokusatsu fans, Japanese company Toei will be launching a global YouTube channel (excluding Japan) that will host 70 classic Tokusatsu series. Yes, you read that right, seventy shows. These shows will include classic seasons of Sentai (which later became Power Rangers in the Us), a slew of Metal Hero shows (three of which became Vr Troopers), several classic robot anime, and much more!
There’s a big catch to this news however. At launch on April 6th the first two episodes of all 70 shows will be uploaded to YouTube and they will all be subtitled. However, going forward the channel will only upload one or two episodes of one or two shows every day and these will not have subtitles. Toei’s website for this channel states that, “further episodes will be available in Japanese for now, but there could be frequent updates.

In this week's adaptation news, the long-running comic series Archie will get its first-ever feature treatment, that may or may not have something to do with zombies. Denzel Washington is set to star in an adaptation of debut novel Shovel Ready, DC Comics will see its Fables run get a movie makeover and Star Wars producer Rick McCallum is on board to produce a feature-length version of the short film R'Ha. While these properties are busy entering various stages of production in the real world, today's trip into my ideal reality centers on an 90s-00s series that takes place inside a computer. No it's not Tron, Digimon or even Superhuman Samurai Syber-Squad, although I love them all. Hit the jump and say it with me. Hollywood! Adapt this: ReBoot! What It's About: Let me first thank Canada for producing one of my favorite series growing up. This ambitious 3D...

It’s never a good thing when a show makes you look back on stuff like Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, V.R. Troopers, or Superhuman Samurai Syber-Squad and think how normal and sensible those shows are by comparison, but that’s exactly the reaction Big Bad Beetleborgs elicits. It throws superpowers, a ghost with a striking resemblance to Jay Leno, a werewolf, a vampire, Frankenstein’s monster, three kids, futuristic looking super suits, and the basic episodic formula of every live-action Saban show into a pot and forces them to coalesce into some ridiculous concoction that only kids could stomach. The series quickly fell into a dull pattern only to shake it about 25 episodes in. The only real problem with this set (besides the show not being all that great to start) is that it includes two episodes from a six-part story arc, essentially necessitating fans to buy the second volume...
