Carrie Underwood Is About To End Her Three-Year Residency In Las Vegas

Underwood has performed at Resorts World Theatre at Resorts World Las Vegas since December 2021. The star recently announced the final three performances of the show, “Reflection: The Las Vegas Residency,” each of which will take place in April 2025.

This will mark the end of her three-year residency. Underwood was both the first and currently longest-running performer to headline the venue.

Before you ask, no, depiction is not an endorsement here. When Joel Kim Booster first set out to write what would become “Fire Island,” he knew he wanted to write about the nearly decade long friendship he’s had with his co-star Bowen Yang. The two were connected by a mutual friend shortly after Booster moved to New York. “They couched it though in, ‘You know, there’s this other gay Asian comedian that you should know.’ Because that’s how it was presented to us, we were both sort of hesitant to meet because we didn’t want that person to be right,” he tells Gold Derby during our recent webchat (watch the exclusive video interview above).

I had a chance to watch the first three episodes of the new Netflix limited series “Beef” last night, and it didn’t take long before I was hooked. It came inside of 10 minutes. Steven Yeun (as the suicidal contractor Danny Cho) and Ali Wong (as the wealthy but tortured boutique entrepreneur Amy Lau) are brilliant and deserving of all the praise that’s already been heaped upon them, and the narrative and production are irresistibly intriguing and discomforting. But what struck me was how quickly I forgot I was watching a production filled almost exclusively with Asian American actors. It all became rather seamless, even as the storyline alluded the players’ ethnicity.

The reception greeting the series that despite its title deals with beef mostly metaphorically (stemming from a road rage incident leading to an elongated feud that makes the protagonists feel alive) has been deservedly exalted, bolstered by major word of mouth.

Sarah Michelle Gellar is talking about how Dolly Parton was a producer on Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

During a visit to The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon, Gellar was asked about Parton being an uncredited producer on the show she starred in for seven seasons.

“Yes, little known fact, the legend Dolly Parton was a producer,” she said on the NBC late-night show. “We never saw her [but] we’d get Christmas gifts in the beginning that would have our name, and I would think, ‘She doesn’t even know who I am.’ And then one day, someone asked her about it, and she complimented the show and my performance. I was like, ‘Oh, I can die now. Dolly Parton knows who I am and thinks I’m good.'”

Sandollar Productions, which Parton started with her then-business partner Sandy Gallin, was behind the supernatural drama, alongside Mutant Enemy Productions and 20th Century Fox Television.

HBO Max has added four great actresses to the second season of its acclaimed comedy “Hacks,” with Laurie Metcalf, Martha Kelly, Ming-Na Wen and Margaret Cho coming aboard.

While details about their roles have not been disclosed, Metcalf, Kelly and Wen will each join as recurring guests, and Cho will make at least one guest appearance.

Per the “Hacks” Season 2 logline, “The dark mentorship between legendary Las Vegas comedian Deborah Vance (Jean Smart) and her young, entitled writer Ava (Hannah Einbinder) continues to evolve as the two travel across the country workshopping Deborah’s new stand-up act.”

Of course, if you remember what happened just before the cut to black at the end of Season 1, you know things are probably very, very awkward between Deborah and Ava.

A three-time Emmy-Winner for “Roseanne” and Best Supporting Actress Oscar-winner for “Lady Bird,” Metcalf has also won eight Tony awards among her many accolades.

Ralph Ahn, a character actor best known for his recurring role as Tran on Fox’s New Girl, has died at the age of 95, our sister site Variety reports. A cause of death has not been disclosed.

“Shang-Chi and the Legends of the 10 Rings,” Marvel’s first film with an Asian lead and cast, is full of cultural and mythological references.

While the titular “Legend of the 10 Rings” is a tale created for the film, other elements are rooted in Chinese culture — both traditional and modern.

Here are the Chinese customs from “Shang-Chi” explained, in order of appearance:

When Shaun (Simu Liu) visits Katy (Awkwafina), he joins the family for breakfast. Rather than cereal, they eat rice porridge, also called jook or congee. A simple and plain dish, jook is often paired with youtiao (Chinese donuts). Before entering their house, Shaun removes his shoes outside — a common custom in Asian households. The reason? To not track in outside dirt and grime. Oftentimes, residents will wear house slippers for use indoors only.

The Emmy-nominated actor and comedian has joined the cast of the upcoming Searchlight Pictures film opposite Joel Kim Booster and Bowen Yang. She’ll play a key role as a homeowner and host on the notorious LGBTQ-friendly island.

The 35th Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival, running May 2 to May 10, will screen 200 films, including eight world premieres and a number of works by women filmmakers. For the first time in its history, the fest will open and close with feature films written and directed by Asian Pacific American women.

The festival, presented by Visual Communications, will be held at a number of venues in Los Angeles.

Opening night will be the world premiere of “Yellow Rose,” written and directed by Diane Paragas, and starring Lea Salonga and Eva Noblezada. The fest will close with “Empty by Design,” written and directed by Andrea A. Walter, and starring Rhian Ramos and Osric Chau.

Special programs include Spotlight on Taiwan, featuring Golden Horse Award winners “Long Time No Sea” and “Cities of Last Things,” and a 25th-anniversary salute to the 1994 TV series “All-American Girl,” with Margaret Cho and other cast members in discussion.

Because of ingrained racism, Sandra Oh didn’t even initially think she was being offered the lead role on BBC America’s “Killing Eve,” but on Thursday, she earned herself an Emmy nomination for it. Today, however, the TV terrain is slowly diversifying with women of color, people with disabilities and queer characters — and in the comedy genre especially, stories are becoming more inclusive.

“Any kind of storytelling that seeks to tell fundamental truths about the human condition can be inclusive,” says Justin Simien, who executive produces “Dear White People” for Netflix. “Comedy does have a unique power, however, in that laughter can be so seductive. It allows us to think about and explore those forbidden and difficult little topics that we might not otherwise, by taking the pressure off a bit.”

Starting out in 1939 as the little studio that could, Hammer would finally make their reputation in the late fifties reimagining Universal’s black and white horrors as eye-popping Technicolor gothics – their pictorial beauty, thanks to cameramen like Jack Asher and Arthur Ibbetson, was fundamental to the studio’s legacy. So it’s been more than a little frustrating to see such disrespect visited upon these films by home video companies happy to smother the market with grainy prints, incoherent cropping and under-saturated colors. The House of Hammer and the film community in general deserve far better than that.

“Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” is an odd TV series. A comedy with dramatic elements, it’s a musical that expresses the feelings of its lead character, Rebecca Bunch (YouTube star Rachel Bloom), via original songs. The ratings aren’t amazing and the show is an Emmy longshot, but people are finding it, and the fans are passionate. It’s unlike anything you’ve seen before; the question is, how many Emmy voters will see it.

At a recent Fyc Emmy event, Bloom bounded out in bra and Spanx to perform an opening number and then returned dressed for an informative Q & A panel. The audience, packed with fans, whooped and hollered; everyone on stage enjoyed playing to the room. That’s the feeling you get from the CW show itself: as hard as it is to pull off, everyone is having a blast.

It's been over 20 years since Margaret Cho starred in the first Asian-American family sitcom on network television, All-American Girl, but it looks like she might be coming back with her own show on Amazon. Deadline reports that Cho has an hour-long dramedy in the works at the streaming/selling-you-everything giant called Highland, where her character must attend court-ordered rehab and move in with her family, which now runs a pot dispensary. Unlike All-American Girl, Cho will have some creative control: She'll be executive-producing the show alongside the writer Liz Sarnoff. It's a long way from the bookstore in San Francisco, but hopefully there are still copies of Ass Master lying around.

I've never been an 11-year-old son of Taiwanese immigrants moving from Chinatown in Washington, DC to the suburbs of Orlando. "Fresh Off The Boat" can't be my story.
