The rise of remakes in Hollywood is no coincidence—studios often lean toward stories that have already proven successful. But in doing so, the originals sometimes get overshadowed. Here’s a look at ten Hollywood hits that were actually inspired by international films, proving that great storytelling transcends borders.

Martin Scorsese’s The Departed is often hailed as a modern classic, but did you know it’s actually a remake of a Hong Kong crime thriller? It is the remake of a film named Infernal Affairs. The movie became very popular and also paved...

Marvel’s new Ultimate Universe has finally introduced its all-new version of Wolverine in all its bloody glory, and his new codename officially marks the most brutal and unforgivable version of the character ever. Bridget Fonda: The Rise, Reign, and Quiet Retreat of a Hollywood Star
Image
Los Angeles, Nov 23 – Bridget Fonda, celebrated actress and member of Hollywood’s legendary Fonda dynasty, was a prominent fixture in the 1990s film industry. However, her sudden departure from acting in 2002 has left fans and critics reflecting on a career filled with accolades and a personal choice to step away from the spotlight.

Fonda, 60, is the daughter of actor Peter Fonda, granddaughter of Henry Fonda, and niece of Jane Fonda. She seemed destined for a career in entertainment, appearing on stage as a child and making her screen debut at age five in Easy Rider. After studying method acting at the Lee Strasberg Theatre & Film Institute and graduating from New York University, Fonda launched her professional career in 1988.

From 1988 to 2002, Fonda appeared in dozens of films, earning two Golden Globe nominations and an Emmy nod. Her filmography spans genres, including comedies, thrillers, and dramas, with roles in The Godfather Part III,...

Why Bridget Fonda Disappeared From Hollywood
Image
Bridget Fonda is the daughter of Peter Fonda, the granddaughter of Henry Fonda, and the niece of Jane Fonda, so it only seemed natural that she would become an actor. She started appearing on stage as a girl and appeared in "Easy Rider" with her father when she was only five years old.

Fonda would go on to study method acting at the famed Lee Strassberg Theater. She started appearing in films only two years after graduating at NYU. Acting was in her blood and it seemed like she never considered doing anything else. From 1988 to 2002, Fonda appeared in dozens of high-profile Hollywood films, and was nominated for two Golden Globes and an Emmy. She retired unexpectedly in 2002 and hasn't been seen on screen since. Throughout the 1990s, however, Fonda was something of a cinematic "It" girl, appearing in raucous comedies, dramatic indies, intense crime films, and a few of Sam Raimi's productions.

Catalan Pubcaster 3Cat in Talks for Season 2 of ‘This Is Not Sweden’ (Exclusive)
Image
Catalan public broadcaster 3Cat, formerly known as Televisió de Cataunya (Tvc), is in talks to make Season 2 of ‘This is Not Sweden’ with the same creative team and producers of Season 1. A distribution deal with a platform is pending.

The Prix Europe-winning series set in a tony middle-class neighborhood on the outskirts of Barcelona was co-produced by Spain’s Rtve and TV3 with Sweden’s Svt, Germany’s Ndr and Finland’s Yle. In the family dramedy series, a young Spanish couple relocates there to provide their children with an optimal quality of life, drawing inspiration from northern European models.

“I’m convinced that we will end up collaborating further with Nordic countries,” said Pío Vernis, 3Cat audiovisual business director, who added: “They are quite small countries with their own language, but with high production standards, as we are.”

Speaking to Variety just before Mipcom, he stressed 3Cat’s push for more international co-productions,...

Image
Stars: Anne Parillaud, Tchéky Karyo, Jean-Hugues Anglade, Patrick Fontana, Alain Lathière, Laura Chéron, Stéphane Fey | Written and Directed by Luc Besson

Nikita, aka La Femme Nikita, directed by Luc Besson, is a gripping and stylish blend of action, thriller, and emotional depth. The film tells the story of Nikita, a young, rebellious woman (played by Anne Parillaud) who is given a second chance at life after being sentenced to death for killing a police officer. Instead of facing her fate, she is recruited by a covert government organization and transformed into a highly skilled assassin.

The narrative revolves around Nikita’s transformation from a streetwise criminal into a sleek, efficient killer, under the watchful eye of her ruthless handler Bob (Tchéky Karyo). What sets Nikita apart from typical action films is its focus on identity, morality, and the cost of violence. Nikita’s evolution is not just physical but psychological,...

‘West Wing’ & ‘Scandal’ Star Joshua Malina’s Wife of 28 Years Files for Divorce
Image
Joshua Malina‘s wife, Melissa Merwin, has filed for divorce from the West Wing actor after nearly 28 years of marriage, citing “irreconcilable differences.” According to court documents obtained by TMZ on Monday (August 5), Merwin, a costume designer who has worked on productions like Fallen, Ellen, and Point of No Return, has requested spousal support from Malina. An exact date of the separation was not specified. Merwin did not request child support as the former couple share two adult children, daughter Isabel, 26, and son Avi, 22. The documents state that Merwin would like to dissolve the marriage “amicably” and “with minimal court intervention.” Malina met Merwin in 1992 through Merwin’s sister, Jennifer Merwin, and his former brother-in-law, Timothy Busfield. They dated for several years before tying the knot in December 1996. Despite being married for almost three decades, the pair kept their relationship out of the spotlight, except for rare social media posts from Malina.

Review: La Femme Nikita
Image
Before Buffy, there was Nikita. French filmmaker Luc Besson’s fifth film caused an international stir as he provided the world with a female protagonist with a dark edge reflecting the times. His 1990 film, La Femme Nikita, proved such a smash that it was remade in America as Point of No Return and spawned a Canadian television series (1997-2001) and Nakita, the CW series (2010-2013).

Anne Parillaud’s depiction of a woman given a second chance was mesmerizing and unforgettable, giving the movie an enduring appeal. As part of Sony Home Entertainment’s 100th-anniversary celebration, the original film is now available in an upgraded 4k Uhd steel book edition.

We watch the transformation of a juvenile delinquent, guilty of killing a police officer during a robbery, taken by a secret government organization that faked her death. For three years, she is weaned off her drug addiction and trained and transformed into Nikita,...

‘Christmas Eve In Miller’s Point’ Review: Tyler Taormina’s Magical, Freewheeling Indie Captures The Holiday Spirit – Cannes Film Festival
Image
We’ve only just got Easter out of the way, and here comes the most immersive Christmas movie of the year, an abstract but very much controlled study based in and around a festive party thrown by a very large family from Long Island, New York. Despite the specificity of the setting, however, Tyler Taormina’s third feature film is a surprisingly relatable experience, part anthropological study, part nostalgia kick, lit up (literally) like a Christmas tree in a yuletide riot of red, white and green.

It begins in a car ferrying members of the Balsano family — mother and father, brother and sister — to the home of the family’s matriarch, where four generations of Balsanos have gathered for their annual get-together. This is about as much of a set-up as you’re going to get,...

The 10 Best Star Wars Characters Introduced In The Bad Batch
Image
Star Wars: The Bad Batch has introduced many new characters to the Star Wars galaxy, though some are better than others. Key allies such as Phee Genoa and Captain Howzer have become very influential in Clone Force 99's story. Sinister villains like Vice Admiral Edmon Rampart are remarkable for their level of brutality, making them stand out among others.

There are many incredible Star Wars characters that Star Wars: The Bad Batch has brought to life over the course of its three seasons, but some stand out more than others. As a spin-off of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, The Bad Batch already had an incredible roster of characters lined up, including the titular Clone Force 99. Each member had previously been featured in the opening four-episode arc of The Clone Wars season 7, which showed how the Arc trooper Echo ended up being a part of the elite clone squad.

The Real Reason Bridget Fonda Quit Acting (It Wasn't Her Car Accident)
Image
Bridget Fonda's car accident was not the reason for her acting exit; she chose personal fulfillment with family life. The actor's career peaked with diverse roles, a cultivated fan base, and critical acclaim. With her signature work in notable movies like Single White Female and Jackie Brown, Fonda's career was a brief triumph.

Bridget Fonda was in a major car accident in 2003, but that wasn't why she quit acting. Richard Romanus, who played the role of loan shark Michael Longo in Mean Streets, passed away at the age of 80 on December 23rd. Meanwhile, Maurice Hines, the brother of Gregory Hines, has also passed away, also at 80.

Although Richard Romanus had a lengthy career that went back to the early ‘70s, it was his turn in Martin Scorsese’s Mean Streets that remained his most memorable performance. It was his character who, after a run-in with Robert De Niro’s Johnny Boy (who owed Michael money), manned the car that drove up alongside Johnny Boy and Harvey Keitel’s Charlie, leading to the shooting of the loose cannon.

Richard Romanus, Actor in ‘Mean Streets,’ Dies at 80
Image
Richard Romanus, the tough-guy character actor best known for his turn as Michael Longo, the Little Italy loan shark who gets into it with Robert De Niro’s Johnny Civello in Martin Scorsese’s Mean Streets, has died. He was 80.

Romanus died Dec. 23 in a private hospital in Volos, Greece, his son, Robert Romanus, told The Hollywood Reporter.

Romanus handled prominent voice roles for Ralph Bakshi in 1977’s Wizards (as the elf warrior Weehawk) and 1982’s Hey Good Lookin’ (as the leader of a 1950s greaser gang), and in between, he played the cab driver Harry Canyon in another animated film, Heavy Metal (1981).

Review: Babylon 5: The Complete Series
Image
At a time when syndicated science fiction was just Star Trek series, it took some guts on Warner Bros’ part to try something darker and more experimental with J. Michael Straczynski’s Babylon 5, designed to tell a sprawling epic that was more political than it was space opera. The show arrived thirty years ago and was successful enough to spawn spin-off five telefilms and a short-lived spinoff, spanning 1993-2007.

The core of it, the 110 episodes from the original five-season series, have been remastered and collected on a nice Blu-ray box set from Warner Home Entertainment. Also included is the original pilot film.

Set in the 23rd century, the Earth Alliance has found its place among star-faring races, notably the Minbari and the Centauri. Some of these races are fine with humans; others wish them gone. Then there are the Vorlons, and no one knows what they want.

Babylon 5 is a gigantic,...

Babylon 5 Just Brought Back Its Most Frightening Storyline in a New Way
Image
This Babylon 5 article contains spoilers.

Like Billy Pilgrim before him, John Sheridan has become unstuck in time. Again!

On May 13, 1996, Babylon 5 aired the first part of a two-parter epic called “War Without End.” In it, the crew of the White Star are tasked with stealing the space station Babylon 4 and sending it back in time 1,000 years to defeat the Shadows in a previous war, all so the Shadows are weaker in the present. But, if they fail, another, much darker parallel universe will unfold. And while we’ve only seen glimpses of that universe before, in the new Babylon 5 animated movie, The Road Home, this specific alternate timeline is explored in a way that calls back not just to “War Without End,” but to the season 1 banger, “Babylon Squared,” too.

In The Road Home, John Sheridan leaves Babylon 5 in 2262, but finds himself slipping between timeframes and...

10 Scariest Transformation Scenes In Anime
Image
Some of the scariest scenes in horror involve a human or animal being forcibly transformed into something else, and that philosophy certainly carries over into anime's scariest transformations. These are no simple shapeshifting incidents, either. The best case scenario is the character’s body being twisted into a monstrous form, because the worst case scenario is that they are being forced into a different plane of existence entirely.

If executed correctly, these sequences make the viewer cringe in horror and disgust at what the character is going through. The appearance of the transformed, though grotesque, is secondary to the emotional impact of the scene. Even better is when the transformation isn't played solely for horror: it's a key plot twist or serves the character's story in some way.

The Specialist (1994): Revisiting Stallone’s steamy team-up with Sharon Stone
Image
1993 was a banner year for Sylvester Stallone. While he had started the nineties on shaky ground due to the failure of Rocky V and his two comedies, Oscar and Stop or My Mom Will Shoot, the back-to-back success of Cliffhanger and Demolition Man reestablished Sly as one of Hollywood’s biggest action heroes. For his follow-up, he would pick another action flick, albeit one that embraced elements of another genre quickly gaining popularity in Hollywood: The erotic thriller.

Flashback to 1992. The movie Basic Instinct was a worldwide smash and established Sharon Stone as the biggest sex symbol of the day. A veteran actress with a career going back a decade, her performance as the murderous but insanely alluring Catherine Trammel made her a cultural icon. She followed it up with another steamy thriller, 1993’s Sliver, also a hit, and The Specialist would be her last entry into the cycle of erotic thrillers,...
