From Twin Peaks to Monument Valley: Duwayne Dunham on Legend of the Happy Worker
Image
It’s well known that George Lucas approached David Lynch to direct Return of the Jedi (1983), and that Lynch (thankfully) demurred, instead pursuing Blue Velvet (1985). Less well-known is the fact that the two films share an editor—Duwayne Dunham, an unlikely hyperspace lane between two otherwise distant cinematic galaxies. As a director himself, Dunham has a body of work that poses yet another wrinkle in space-time: since making his feature debut with Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey (1993), he has specialized in tales of misfit youngsters, predominantly for the Disney Channel. The announcement that his new film, the long-gestating Legend […]

"Disney on acid" by Paul Risker
Duwayne Dunham
The Legend Of The Happy Worker

Duwayne Dunham's comedy Legend Of The Happy Worker, based on Se Feinberg's play, was described by the film's executive producer, David Lynch, as being like "Disney on acid." The story revolves around Joe (Josh Whitehouse), a simple digger with a strong work ethic. When he's corrupted by his uncle Cleat (Colm Meaney), the young man loses himself, letting down his wife (Meagan Holder) and Goose (Thomas Hayden Church), the leader of the digging crew who promotes Joe and espouses the values of the cowboy. Joe is left to walk a path of redemption and rediscover himself and the values his community were built upon.

Dunham's directorial credits include Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey and Ready To Run for Disney. He also directed three episodes of Lynch and Mark Frost's episodic drama Twin Peaks, as well as editing two episodes of its...

Locarno 2025: Five Must-See Movies at This Year’s Festival
Image
Switzerland’s Locarno Film Festival is one of the world’s longest-running film festivals, known for its adventurous programming, exciting retrospectives, and nightly open-air screenings in the Piazza Grande, which is capable of seating 8,000 spectators. The latter is by no means the only screening spot, but it’s the location most associated with the festival.

Hosting world premieres and special screenings of highlights from Cannes, Sundance, and other early-year festivals, this year’s Piazza Grande selection includes the launch of Mediterranean drama “The Birthday Party,” starring Willem Dafoe and Vic Carmen Sonne; Emma Thompson-led thriller “The Dead of Winter;” Joachim Trier’s Cannes prize-winner “Sentimental Value;” a 35mm screening of Stanley Kubrick’s “The Shining;” Jafar Panahi’s Palme d’or winner “It Was Just an Accident;” and the European premiere of Bill Condon’s “Kiss of the Spider Woman.” Jackie Chan, Lucy Liu, Alexander Payne, Golshifteh Farahani, four-time Oscar-winning costume designer Milena Canonero,...

The 15 Saddest Disney Movies, Ranked
Image
Disney is known for tugging at heartstrings. It's a major reason why so many of the studio's films have persevered over the decades. So many people remember watching these movies as kids and learning about the tragedy of death or connecting a little too closely to a family in disarray. Many Disney films, and by extention Pixar Animation productions, take place in fantastical worlds, but they don't sugarcoat harsh realities.

Fortunately, the saddest Disney movies don't really get on the level of something like "Manchester by the Sea," where it becomes unbearable to watch at a certain point. Disney films at least end on an uplifting note, proving that no matter how sad life gets, there's always a silver lining. Still, the following movies can be tough to get through, especially if you're at a point in life where you can really relate to losing a parent or going through a pet's death.

The 15 Best '90s Kids' Movies Ranked
Image
Did movies for kids peak in the 1990s? It's entirely possible. We arrived at this question after sifting through piles of our old VHS tapes to produce a list of the best '90s kids' movies, noting the amount of high-quality entertainment we had to choose from. Make no mistake, this was a hard list to assemble and required more than a few heartbreaking sacrifices. Even cherished Walt Disney productions like "Mulan" and "Tarzan" were left on the outside looking in, which speaks volumes about the last great decade. "Beethoven?" Nope. "Rookie of the Year?" Nadda. "Angels in the Outfield?" Non. The Lindsey Lohan "Parent Trap?" Nein.

Thankfully, the films that made the final cut are genuinely excellent. So, don't get too mad if your favorite children's flicks are nowhere to be found. Chances are, we love them too but had to make room for those that were marginally better.

The Only Major Actors Still Alive From 1974's Police Woman
Image
Police dramas were flourishing in the 1970s (and later parodied in the 1980s) thanks to "Dragnet" when television writer Robert L. Collins hit upon what counted as a genius notion at the tail end of the Richard M. Nixon administration: what if instead of "policeman," "policewoman?" NBC said "Show us," and Collins responded with the buzzy "Police Woman" starring Angie Dickinson as Sergeant Suzanne "Pepper" Anderson.

"Police Woman" was about as progressive as you could expect from an hour-long network drama in the '70s when it was rare for a drama of any genre to be headed up by a woman. Once a week, Dickinson struck a quasi-feminist figure as an ultra-capable officer of the law with a penchant for dressing in tight-fitting shirts in pants. At least once she went undercover in a swimsuit. And as she complained to the press years later, the writers liked to have...

How Did I Forget That Michael J. Fox Was In Tim Burton's Strangest Movie?!
Image
Michael J. Fox's role in Tim Burton's Mars Attacks! is often overlooked, despite his energetic and sleazy performance as Jason Stone. Mars Attacks! featured a star-studded cast, including Jack Nicholson, Danny DeVito, and Pierce Brosnan, showcasing Burton's influence in the 1990s. Fox's performance in Mars Attacks! is worth remembering, as he found success in experimental films during this era of his career.

Though I and many know Michael J. Fox for his most iconic performance in Back to the Future, we should never forget his role in a famous Tim Burton movie. He gained acclaim as Marty McFly in the Back to the Future franchise, though Fox now has mixed feelings on reboot attempts. After the series ended in 1990, Fox had enough power to collaborate and experiment with his films. He has since retired, but Fox's career might resume post-retirement, as Fox has said that he would...

Poorly-Reviewed '90s Adaptation Of Classic Comedy Shorts Becomes Netflix Hit 30 Years Later
Image
After 30 years, The Little Rascals finds renewed success on Netflix, ranking as the 10th most-watched movie in the US. Its resurgence indicates a renewed interest despite its poor reviews and age, competing with classics like Matilda. The film's unique story, memorable characters, and child actors' later careers contribute to its rewatchability and potential climb in rankings.

The poorly-reviewed 1994 movie adaptation of the classic comedy shorts The Little Rascals became a hit on Netflix in the United States 30 years later. Directed by Penelope Spheeris, the film acts as an updated version of Hal Roach's Our Gang series of shorts, many of which were originally broadcast under the name the movie would later use. In the movie, The Little Rascals characters discover a member of their anti-girl club has a secret girlfriend, leading to a series of event all stemming from Spanky (Travis Tedford) and Buckwheat (Ross Elliot Bagley) trying to break them up.

Michael J. Fox's 10 Best Movies, Ranked
Image
Michael J. Fox has had a long and successful career in Hollywood, starring in a variety of films that showcase his comedic and dramatic talents. Here are some of his most notable roles: "Back to the Future" (1985) - As Marty McFly "Teen Wolf" (1985) - As Scott Howard

Michael J. Fox is a beloved movie star, and while most audiences easily recognize him from his starring role in the Back to the Future trilogy, his best movies encompass much more than that. Working as a romantic lead, a comedic actor, and lending his iconic voice to vocal work, Fox has never limited the kind of projects he'll work on. What comes through in all of his performances is the boyish charm and charisma that has never left him, even in his later years. His legacy will remain a vital part of cinema for years to come.

30 Years Ago, The Lion King Made Disney The King Of The Box Office
Image
(Welcome to Tales from the Box Office, our column that examines box office miracles, disasters, and everything in between, as well as what we can learn from them.)

"The pitch for the story was a lion cub gets framed for murder by his uncle set to the music of Elton John. People said, 'What? Good luck with that.'" That's what producer Don Hahn said to Film School Rejects in 2018 of Disney's 1994 animated classic "The Lion King." It's an odd thing to say, given that it went on to become one of the most successful animated movies of all time. But that's looking back at it with the benefit of hindsight. At the time, it was viewed as a risk by the powers that be. It was a gamble that paid off handsomely, to put it lightly.

At the time, Disney was enjoying a fruitful period known as the Disney Renaissance,...

Once Upon a Studio Nodded to Dinosaur
Image
Disney's Once Upon a Studio featured a nod to 100 years of their feature-length movies. Many notable faces were present like Snow White and Stitch, but the short also nodded to characters from Dinosaur. While darker than most Disney movies, Dinosaur was far ahead of its time and showed that the studio could tackle darker themes with a hint of hope.

Among a cavalcade of cameos, Disney’s Once Upon a Studio called back to a movie far ahead of its time. Celebrating 100 years of Disney, it’s no surprise the studio would reflect on how far it has come, what it accomplished, and the characters that changed animation forever. Dinosaur may have faded into obscurity, but like the incredible animals that inspired it, it left behind a legacy that time didn't fully appreciate until long after its heyday.

Premiering in 2023, Once Upon a Studio came as part of the Disney100 celebration,...

The Saddest Movies, from ‘A.I. Artificial Intelligence’ to ‘Up’
Image
If watching a movie can be compared to taking your emotions for a walk, then sad films challenge audiences with a full-on sprint. Since before Rose said goodbye to Jack or even Bambi lost his mother, tragedy has played a vital role in cinema’s most well-loved stories of every ilk.

For romance, the possibility of heartbreak raises the stakes, pitting lover against lover or, worse still, lovers against time in dazzling depictions of humanity’s enduring quest for security and acceptance. “Titanic,” “A Star is Born,” “Moonlight,” “Brokeback Mountain,” “Up,” and countless other legendary titles have crafted couples so heart-rendingly believable that their joyous reunions and painful partings have provided powerful parallels to our own.

Epic tales of war and survival position total devastation similarly, dangling all-consuming grief and loss like narratively juicy carrots motivating the plodding agony of movies from “War Horse” to “Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey.

10 Funniest Far Side Comics That Make Fun of Disney
Image
While Gary Larson's The Far Side is known for its surreal sensibilities and bizarre insights into nature, it also takes its fair share of shots at pop culture - including Disney. Starting in 1980, some of its references - such as the talking-horse sitcom Mister Ed - are now dated, but Disney's longevity means Larson's strip still has plenty to say about the movies and shows that fans know and love.

Here, then, are the ten funniest The Far Side strips which take a swipe at Disney, including everything from Dumbo to The Mickey Mouse Club, and a surprise bonus inclusion that puts a genuinely weird spin on Disney and The Far Side's relationship.

Gary Larson is particularly beloved by scientists, as his fascination with the natural world and the scientific process can be surprisingly deep. Larson has had multiple insects named in his honor, and his...

The Best Michael J. Fox Movies Ranked
Image
Michael J. Fox is best known for starring in hit movies and TV shows in the '80s and '90s, including Spin City and the Back to the Future trilogy, though his filmography is full of forgotten and underrated features deserving recognition among the list of his top films. The beloved actor began his career in the late '70s and became a household name through his role as Alex P. Keaton on the popular sitcom Family Ties the following decade. He broke out on the big screen with the 1985 blockbuster Back to the Future, proving to be a star with real box office appeal.

Throughout his career, Fox has found ways to reinvent himself, and he has played a wide variety of movie and TV characters over the decades, from affable everymen to unlikable yuppies. While he had his share of flops, his best movies have typically capitalized on his whip-smart comedic timing.

The trailer for the Netflix film finds its way online and features a journey through the wilderness as they encounter various colorful characters like tough bikers, news reporters interested in their story, and new-age hippies. The plot synopsis from Netflix reads,

George Miller: The Only Director Who Could Make Mad Max and Babe
George Miller
When people think about Academy Award-nominated directors, George Miller is probably not one of the first names that come to mind. Academy Award-nominated films have a certain connotation – typically we think of movies that are serious, but maybe a bit stodgy, ambitious, but classically-minded, crowd-pleasing, but rote. In the general public’s mind, Academy Award-nominated films are usually well-made, stuffy dramas that are more akin to eating your vegetables than pigging out on something decadent and different. But Miller makes odd, energetic genre films, something the Academy historically has ignored — unless this particular director is involved.

Miller, whose new film Three Thousand Years of Longing is out today, may be our weirdest highly decorated filmmaker still stretching his gifts. His last film, 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road, the fourth entry in his post-apocalyptic action series that saw a 30-year gap between installments, was nominated for 10 Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director.

2022 Governors Awards profile: Michael J. Fox to receive Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award for Parkinson’s research
Image
In 1998, A-list actor Michael J. Fox publicly disclosed that he had been diagnosed seven years earlier with Parkinson’s disease, which impairs the body’s nervous and motor systems. At the time, the most notable people living with Parkinson’s were boxer Muhammad Ali and U.S. attorney general Janet Reno, but it has since impacted other figures such as Alan Alda, Neil Diamond, and Linda Ronstadt. More than 150 years after the disease was given a name, there remains no known cause for it, but Fox has devoted the last two decades of his life to answering that question and advancing treatment for people like him. In acknowledgment of these efforts, the recently retired performer has been announced as the next recipient of the film academy’s Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award.

Along with honorary award recipients Euzhan Palcy, Diane Warren, and Peter Weir, Fox is set to be recognized at...

Lord and Miller Urge Oscars to Take Animation Seriously: ‘Invite a Respected Filmmaker to Present’
Image
Oscar-winning animators Phil Lord and Christopher Miller slammed the Academy for diminishing the animation categories during the 94th Academy Awards.

The directing duo behind “The Lego Movie” and co-producers of “Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse” penned an opinion piece for Variety calling out the Oscars’ handling of the animated categories, especially when “Encanto” won Best Animated Feature. Presenters Lily James, Halle Bailey, and Naomi Scott (who’ve all played Disney princesses) took to the stage, saying, “So many kids watch these movies over and over… and over and over and over and over… I think some parents out there know exactly what we’re talking about.”

That glib presentation of one of the night’s biggest honors didn’t sit well with two leaders of the animation community.

“Framing the five Academy Award nominees for Best Animated Feature as a corporate product for kids that parents must begrudgingly endure could be dismissed as simply careless,...

Woolverton made her animated feature writing debut with Disney’s critically acclaimed and celebrated 1991 animated feature Beauty and the Beast. The feature made history as the first full-length animated movie ever to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture. It also won three Golden Globes, including Best Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical. The movie resonated with audiences — so much that it became a Broadway musical that ran from 1994 to 2007 and became one of the longest-running shows in Broadway history. Woolverton adapted the script for the Broadway stage and won the Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Musical. She was also nominated for a Tony Award for Best Book of a Musical.

HBO Now New Releases: April 2020
Issa Rae
Well here we are. April is going to be a fairly sedentary and isolating month for a lot of people. At least we now thankfully have some guidance as to our entertainment options as HBO has released its new streaming releases for April 2020.

HBO’s original series premieres are pretty busy this month. The fourth season of Issa Rae’s excellent comedy Insecure arrives on April 12. That’s preceded by the fascinating docuseries Atlanta’s Missing and Murdered: The Lost Children and followed by book adaptation I Know This Much is True.

On the film side of things there are a few exciting options. Good Boys arrives on April 4, It: Chapter Two on April 11, and Stuber on April 18. Some older movies arriving on April 1 are Team America: World Police, Die Hard, and Slumdog Millionaire.

Here is everything else coming to HBO Now and HBO Go in April 2020 via HBO PR.

‘A Dog’s Way Home’ Film Review: Doggie Downer Puts Pooch in Peril
Michael J. Fox, Sally Field, Don Ameche, Rattler, Tiki, and Ben in L'Incroyable Voyage (1993)
“Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey” is letting out a huge howl right about now. “A Dog’s Way Home,” the latest in the canine-loving cinematic universe (from the screenwriters of 2017’s scandal-plagued “A Dog’s Purpose”) employs all the same tactics as the 1993 hit family film: the adorable-sounding narrator, a pet’s love for their human so deep that they journey through perilous environments in hopes of being reunited, and the intermingling stories of those they come across while trying to get back home. But “Homeward Bound” made it enjoyable.

Bella (voiced by Bryce Dallas Howard) is born a stray. She lives in a happy coexistence — with her littermates, mother, and a cat with her own litter of kittens — under the rubble of an abandoned house, until Animal Control shows up and rips her family away. Mama Cat takes Bella in as her own, even nursing her until a human...

‘A Dog’s Way Home’ Review: This Increasingly Inane Dog Franchise Needs to Be Sent to a Farm
It’s hard to know who is more mistreated in “A Dog’s Way Home,” the city of Denver, Colorado, or the audience who has to sit through it. On the one hand, Denver’s city-wide pit bull ban probably deserves some scrutiny. On the other hand, the knowledge that this inane and humorless movie is only tone third of Bruce Cameron’s growing dog-iverse cuts more deeply than any dog bite. Denver isn’t the only city that should consider a city-wide ban.

Not technically a sequel to last year’s “A Dog’s Purpose,” this movie follows a different anthropomorphized dog, and this time, she stays in one body. That’s right — the first movie followed a single dog soul throughout many rebirths, a premise that allowed for a variety of pup cuteness, but also necessitated more than a few dog deaths throughout its painful 100 minutes.

“A Dog...

SingularDTV Exec “Optimistic” Blockchain Firm Will Get SEC Blessing To Add Crowdfunding To Its Platform
A top executive at the blockchain specialist SingularDTV said the company is “very optimistic” it will gain regulatory approval to enable crowdfunding through its platform.

Letting members of the company’s online community directly invest in film, TV and music projects would close a key loop, said Kim Jackson, co-founder and head of entertainment for the company. During a keynote session at a New York conference sponsored by the Media & Entertainment Services Alliance, she said crowdfunding would complement tools for producing, distributing and tracking projects. The whole enterprise, she said, can be managed with new technology that offers far greater ease and transparency than with any current method, though regulators have expressed some wariness.

“We’re working with SEC lawyers and working very closely with regulators to be able to show them the functionality of this application,” Jackson said. “It will really be able to be a transparent ledger, so...

William Phipps Dies: Voice Of Prince Charming In ‘Cinderella’ Was 96
William Phipps
William Phipps, the voice of Prince Charming in the animated Disney film Cinderella and a prolific actor who appeared in more than 200 film and television productions, has died. Phipps passed Friday at UCLA Medical Center in Santa Monica at age 96 from lung cancer complications, according to his friend, author Tom Weaver.

Phipps had an interesting career in film, debuting in the Oscar-nominated Crossfire, which was a Best Picture candidate that year. But he was best known for his many roles in 1950s science fiction films, where he was one of the genre’s main players.

Among his appearances were the films Five, The War of the Worlds, Invaders From Mars, Cat Women of the Moon, and The Snow Creature.

Phipps voice-over gig as Prince Charming was a direct hire by Walt Disney himself. It brought Phipps a whopping $100 for an afternoon’s work. He later made a live appearance as...

Robert Zemeckis & Steve Carrell Film Gets November 2018 Date, No Flash For Zemeckis
Yesterday, we reported on a rumor from Screen Junkies. Said rumor stated that Robert Zemeckis, who directed such big classics as Back to the Future and Forrest Gump, was in early talks to enter the DC Extended Universe and helm the trouble Flash movie. When last we heard, following the departure of Dope director Rick Famuyiwa, Warner Bros was still in search for a director for that superhero standalone film. Zemeckis taking over would have fallen in line with the studio’s strategy of taking big A-list directors and throwing them at a superhero movie.

The report was tentative at best, and the panelists delivering the news made sure to state that there was very much the possibility that Zemeckis could drop out of the project, and it sounds like that’s exactly what happened.

According to Variety, Universal and Amblin have dated Zemeckis’ next movie for November 21, 2018. The film will star Steve Carrell,...

7 Films New to Netflix to Watch In April, Including ‘Kubo and the Two Strings’ and ‘Casting JonBenet’
Matthew McConaughey, Charlize Theron, and Art Parkinson in Kubo et l'Armure magique (2016)
The hits keep on coming from your friendly neighborhood streaming giant, Netflix, which announced a fresh round of titles hitting the airwaves next month. Ranging from never-before-streamed comedy specials to historical classics to critically acclaimed kids’ films, these titles are sure to keep you cooped up and entertained throughout mud season. Enjoy.

1. “Richard Pryor: Live & Smokin'” (available April 1)

The first of only four specials ever filmed by the legendary comedian, this 45-minute stand-up set from 1978 was released on VHS in 1985 and has never been available to stream before (legally). Almost universally revered by comedians of all stripes, this special has stayed relatively obscure due to an uneven performance from Pryor. Still, you can learn from a genius even on a bad day.

2. “Across the Universe” (available April 1)

Even Rachel Wood and Jim Sturgess anchor this visually enchanting Beatles movie musical from visionary Broadway director and choreographer Julie Taymor (“Titus...

‘Finding Nemo’ and cinema’s affection for separation
Finding Nemo encompasses a tremendous amount of positive imagery that makes up Disney and Pixar’s populous appeal. From learning how to trust family and friends, to overcoming biggest fears and obstacles, Finding Nemo understands how to tap into the audience’s heartstrings and neatly ties in a meaningful message for the viewer to take home. Yet with every good side, there is a dark presence that even Disney can’t back away from. Like many Disney films, from Bambi to Frozen, Finding Nemo deals with a story whose basis stems from a broken household struggling with a great deal of separation. Why does Disney cling onto threads of such despair and heartache? Perhaps it’s a factor many can relate to. Or perhaps it’s a working formula that sweetens the arc of a happy ending. Either way, separation is a tapped fountain of which Hollywood has dipped into time after time again.

8 Criminally Underrated Disney Movies
Walt Disney Pictures

Sometimes, I feel as if Walt Disney and his famous studios had as much of a hand in raising me as my parents did. I’m sure many of you feel the same way. After all, Walt Disney and the production company has produced more movies for children than all the other major studios all put together. It’s likely that the first movie that most of us saw was a Disney flick. Most of us have memories of our first viewings of at least one Disney film (for me, my strongest is my first experience in a movie theater, going to see The Lion King when I was four years old).

When we reminisce about our favorite Disney flicks, it’s usually the acknowledged classics that dominate our discussions. Said classics include such films as Cinderella, Aladdin, Pinocchio, Sleeping Beauty, Lady And The Tramp, and Beauty And The Beast,...

I'm Still Not Over... Shadow's almost-death in 'Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey'
Michael J. Fox, Sally Field, Don Ameche, Rattler, Tiki, and Ben in L'Incroyable Voyage (1993)
Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey was a perfect family movie. It was funny. It was inspirational. It had talking pets! So when my parents let me watch it when I was 5, it seemed like a socially acceptable parenting decision. And it was. To this day, I love that movie. It’s one of my all-time favorites, and I’ll probably show it to my kids one day. However, that doesn’t mean I watch it all the time, mainly because I can’t so much as think about the scene where Shadow falls into that hole without crying. Let me...

Disney Developing Alice in Wonderland 2
When a movie makes over $1 billion at the box office, it's not too often that a sequel doesn't immediately follow. However, in the case of Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland, the movie was based on a classic work of literature where no official continuation exists. It's true that Lewis Carroll wrote two books featuring Alice, however, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass were both used as source material for the movie. Nevertheless, Disney is now forging ahead with a potential sequel, bringing back screenwriter Linda Woolverton to attempt to pen a script. In addition to writing the first Alice in Wonderland film, Woolverton has done plenty of other work for Disney over the past two decades. She also wrote Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey and the upcoming Sleeping Beauty prequel Maleficent. There is no word yet on whether or not...

Alice In Wonderland Is Getting A Sequel
Linda Woolverton who has worked on 2010s 3D fantasy box office hit Alice in Wonderland and has a long history with Disney is reportedly penning the sequel.

Mouse House stalwart Woolverton has written the story of movies such as Mulan, released in 1998, and 1994 The Lion King, not to mention Beauty and the Beast and Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey. She is also currently working on the upcoming movie Maleficent, scheduled to be released in 2013.

Tim Burton’s big screen live action take on Alice starred Mia Wasikowska in the title role and Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter.

This will marks Woolverton’s third Alice screenplay as she also wrote the script for the musical stage version currently in the works by Disney Theatrical Productions, which Rob Ashford will helm as a direct adaptation of the 2010 feature.

In addition to Tron 3 that has effectively begun negotiations with Jesse Wigutow...

Johnny Depp in Alice au pays des merveilles (2010)
'Alice In Wonderland' screenwriter Linda Woolverton penning sequel for Disney
Johnny Depp in Alice au pays des merveilles (2010)
Tim Burton’s wily, psychedelic Alice In Wonderland is getting a sequel, and the original film’s screenwriter is penning it for Disney.

EW confirms that the Disney-attached script is being written by Linda Woolverton, who also wrote the screenplay for 2010′s 3-D fantasy box office hit starring Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter, Mia Wasikowska as Alice, and wild-eyed Helena Bonham Carter as the Red Queen. Other return figures are Joe Roth, Suzanne Todd and Jennifer Todd as producers.

Woolverton has worked with Disney for years, writing screenplays for 1991′s glorious, animated Beauty and the Beast, 1993′s dog tale Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey,...

Alice In Wonderland Live-Action Sequel Has a Writer
Tim Burton's live-action adaptation of Alice in Wonderland was a huge hit, making over a billion dollars. It also helped inspire a ton of other live-action fairytale movies. So it's no surprise that Disney is finally moving forward with a sequel.

The studio has hired Linda Woolverton to write the script for the sequel. Woolverton has a solid history with Disney writing other films such as Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey, and Maleficent. So she definitely knows what it takes to make a solidly good Disney film.

Of course there's no details of what the plot of the sequel will be, but it's obviously inspired by Lewis Carroll's Wonderland novels, and we know Alice will return to Wonderland. We just don't know what adventure awaits her this time around.

There's no word on if Burton will be back to direct or...

Disney Going Down The Rabbit Hole With A Sequel To Tim Burton's 'Alice In Wonderland'
So why is Disney prepping a sequel to a movie that even Walt Disney Animation Studios' chief technical officer Andy Hendrickson said "isn't very good"? Well, they've got about $1,024,299,904 reasons. That's how much "Alice In Wonderland" took worldwide in 2010 to make it one of the highest grossing films of all time (it's still #12 on the all time grossing worldwide list ahead of "The Dark Knight"). So this was really a matter of procedure because let's face it, you don't leave a cash cow like that lying around, so yes, a sequel is on the way. The studio has tasked veteran writer Linda Woolverton -- the scribe behind "Beauty and the Beast," "The Lion King," "Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey" and "Maleficent" -- to write the follow-up. Of course, there are no details except that it will follow "Alice fleeing real-world pressures by returning to...
