“We don’t need a lot of content, we just need lots of really good content,” Kelvin Yau, President of Asia Pacific and Marketing iQIYI, concluded when quizzed on his company’s editorial strategy during a keynote session on streaming this morning at Filmart in Hong Kong.
Yau took part in the keynote alongside fellow streaming heads Marianne Lee, Chief of Content Acquisition and Development at Viu, Jessica Kam-Engle, Executive VP and Business Head at CreAsia Studio, and Winradit Kolasastraseni, President of Digital Media at True Digital Group.
The session was chaired by Asia Video Industry Association CEO Louis Boswell, who began the session by noting that iQIYI, which launched in 2010 as a tech company before moving into content production, was now profitable after hitting the black in 2023.
“It’s about putting the right resources in the right places,” Yau said. “It goes back to the whole point of being disciplined,...

Titanic and Avatar director James Cameron has opened fire on Hollywood turning board games into movies. The filmmaker gave an interview to German magazine Spiegel Online about what life is like for him 12 months after the stunning success of Avatar and one of the topics that was touched on was the state of mainstream movie making. Cameron decided it was the right time to set his sights on a current mega-project that Universal Pictures is making, a movie based on the Hasbro board game Battleship.
Here's what Cameron had to say about the shape of things (and as translated by Screenrant):
"We have a story crisis. Now they want to make the Battleship game into a film. This is pure desperation. Everyone in Hollywood knows how important it is that a film is a brand before it hit theaters. If a brand has been around, Harry Potter for example,...

With the publication of the 2010 Black List another compilation of the year's best unproduced screenplays has arrived. This is the fifth year that The Black List has been in existence, and its purpose is to shine a spotlight on what 290 film executives think are some of the best creative executions of ideas worthy for the big screen.
To be nominated and included on The Black List a screenplay can't have been released in 2010. As well, the minimum number of votes that a screenplay needed to have to warrant inclusion on the list is five. Several of the projects listed on Tbl are in development and will be released in the next twelve months. Others might have heat but take years to reach theaters, and there are also many that will never be greenlighted.

While The Black List may be getting most of the press from entertainment news circles when it's announced in December, there's another compilation of the best new ideas and writing being offered to Hollywood movie studios and producers. It's called The Hit List (Thl), and it differs from The Black List in one fundamental way: whereas The Black List (Tbl) is a list of the top unproduced screenplays in Hollywood, several of the screenplays on that list have been purchased or are in development.
Take a look at last year's Black List (Part 1 is here, Part 2 is here) and here we are, one year later, and several of the scripts that made the 2009 list will be coming out in 2011 -- or have already been released (like The Social Network or Due Date). The poster for Paul Haggis’ (Crash) The Next Three Days has debuted online. A remake of the 2007 French film Pour Elle (or Anything for Her), the film stars Russell Crowe whose life begins to fall apart when his wife (played by Elizabeth Banks) is arrested for a murder she claims she did not commit. The trailer, which debuted a few weeks ago, positioned the film as an intelligent action/thriller and the film’s collage poster does little in the way of disputing that claim.

Cuba Gooding Jr. resurrected his Jerry Maguire catchphrase during a night out in Spokane, Washington - taking over the bar's microphone and telling revelers to "Show me the money". The actor is currently in the state to film new movie "The Hit List" with Christian Slater.
Video footage, obtained by TMZ.com, shows the star making a drunken speech at a local bar, winning over the crowd with his famous movie quote and a patriotic tribute to his native U.S. He is seen grabbing a microphone and stepping up on a stage, telling bar-goers, "Show me the money. Show me the money!", a line from his 1996 film with Tom Cruise.
In a rambling speech, he added, "We are going to represent in the next five years, because you know what - we are the best country in the motherf**king world. And that's how we are going to do it.

Cuba Gooding Jr. and Cole Hauser have joined the cast of the indie thriller "The Hit List" for North by Northwest Productions says Variety.
The story has man confessing his problems to a stranger (Gooding Jr.) whom he has met in a bar. What started out as a drunk ramble about the five people he'd most like to see dead turns deadly serious as the people on that list start getting killed.
Chad and Evan Law penned the script and Will Kaufman is directing. Richard Salvatore and Freddy Braidy are producing.

Britain's Queen Elizabeth's art gallery was on the Ira death list. Files just released have shown the Irish paramilitary group targeted high-profile London attractions in the 70s - including the gallery at the queen's residence Buckingham Palace - in a two-year bombing campaign. The hit list was found in a London flat raided by police in December 1975 which was occupied by the Ira's Balcome Street gang and used as a Republican bomb factory. The four-man unit - Martin O'Connell, Edward Butler, Harry Duggan and Hugh Doherty - carried out a series of bombings and murders in the 70s. The gang was captured by police on 12 December 1975 after a six-day siege at a flat in Balcome Street, central...
