The Most Underrated Parody Films Of All Time
Image
Now that the new Naked Gun has been released, it reminded us of how great parody films can be (check out Bumbray’s review Here). I felt it was time to look at other films in the parody genre. Because, sure, everyone knows Airplane, Hot Shots, or Scary Movie, but there are plenty of others that are worth your time. From the financially unsuccessful to films that didn’t get a fair shake until decades later, it’s time that we run the gauntlet.

So let’s take a look at some of the most underrated Parody Films ever made.

Stay Tuned (1992)

Ironically, this film was actually just announced to be getting its own TV series and has always been amongst John Ritter’s best. Following a husband and wife as they’re sucked into their television sets, they must survive the twisted versions of the shows that they now find themselves in.

Loosely based on the 1992 film Stay Tuned starring John Ritter, the series follows the pair as they become stuck behind a TV screen and are "forced to navigate their way through TV’s most binge-worthy obsessions." In addition to starring, Gad and Rannells will also serve as executive producers for the series, which has been created by Akiva Goldsman, Jordan Cahan (also showrunner), and Greg Lessans. John Ritter, Pam Dawber, David Tom, and Heather McComb in Télémaniacs (1992)
We can be friends if you remember Peter Hyams’ 1992 dark comedy Stay Tuned. The high-concept comedy starring John Ritter and Pam Dawber is a beloved cult classic about a husband and wife who are sucked into a hellish television set and must survive the gauntlet of twisted versions of shows in which they find themselves. Stay Tuned is a bizarre bit of fun from the early ’90s, and now Josh Gad is bringing it back! That’s right, folks! Get your remote controls ready, because Josh Gad and Andrew Rannells will star in a comedy series inspired by Hyams’ sadistic and satirical film, Stay Tuned, for Hulu.

A 44% Rotten Tomatoes Cult Classic Is Getting an Unexpected Remake From 'The Book of Mormon's Dynamic Duo
Image
Don't touch that dial! The Book of Mormon co-stars Josh Gad and Andrew Rannells are teaming up on the small screen...and getting sucked into it. They're set to star in a TV remake of the cult 1993 comedy Stay Tuned. The new series is being developed for Hulu. Deadline reports that the series will be a loose remake of the 1993 film, which was directed by Peter Hyams (Outland), and written by Jim Jennewein and Tom S. Parker (The Flintstones); in it, Gad and Rannells will find themselves trapped inside the world of television.

Although Gad and Rannells won accolades for their star-making Broadway performances in Book of Mormon, and became close friends during its production, this will only be their second on-screen collaboration: they previously made cameos in Hulu's History of the World, Part II. Says Gad, "For over a decade Andrew and I have been the Laverne and Shirley...

James Longman, Rachel Scott Will Anchor ABC News’ Daily Short-Form Show for Disney+
Image
The newest show on Disney+ is likely to have more surprising plot twists than any Marvel movie and more oddball characters than the latest series from “Star Wars.”

What is it? The news.

In its first original daily program designed specifically for the streaming service, ABC News will, starting each weekday at 6 a.m., dispatch James Longman and Rachel Scott to give viewers an 8-to-10-minute recap of the latest headlines. The latter may hold forth often from the White House or other powerful seat in Washington, D.C. while the former offers updates from the many overseas locales he regularly visits. And the Disney news division has plans to expand the show, “What You Need to Know,” to other times for Disney+ subscribers. The series debuts July 21.

3 sci-fi films to watch to honor Star Trek's Teri Garr
Image
The world of Star Trek lost a true gem today, as Teri Garr passed away at the age of 79. The actress rose to fame in the 1970s, starring in some of the biggest movies made during the decade. Yet, despite her lauded standing for over three decades, Garr never forgot where she came from.

She remembered her big break and who gave it to her, and that just so happened to be Star Trek. While she had an infamous falling out with Gene Roddenberry following her refusal to shorten the length of her skirt, she still credits the franchise with helping her launch her career.

In her autobiography, she claims that after her time on Star Trek, the bigger roles started coming in. While Roddenberry may have never brought her back to the franchise, for one reason or another, Garr rose to become an icon and today, we celebrate three of her best sci-fi projects.

The Relic (1997) – What Happened to This Adaptation?
Image
The 90s was a great time for adaptations. Jurassic Park is the gold standard, of course, but there was so much more. That book’s author, Michael Crichton, also had Sphere and Congo get greenlit and released while we would see non-horror output like Forrest Gump and Shawshank Redemption, which account for the greatest film of all time… and Forrest Gump. On the horror side we would have Silence of the Lambs, the wonderful It TV miniseries, Exorcist III, and a fun little monster movie throwback called The Relic. At the time, I just thought it was a cool creature feature designed specifically for 12-year-olds like me but looking back all these years later I found out it was an adaptation of a book by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child in what would be the first of 22 separate stories for one of the chief protagonists. That’s all well and...

What Happened to Jeffrey Jones?
Image
Lydia Deetz, her stepmother Delia Deetz, and her daughter Astrid stand over a casket, the burial services in progress. We can barely make out who the funeral is for but there he is on the headstone: Charles Deetz. While Charles was once part of the Beetlejuice sequel when the ghost with the most was to “go Hawaiian”, he was written entirely out of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice…for reasons that will soon be obvious.

Despite the original’s and sequel’s dalliances with the afterlife, Jeffrey Jones will not be in the Beetlejuice sequel– or pretty much any other legitimate movie – following his disgraceful tumble from his small but reliable spotlight. Perfectly fitting into prestigious period pieces and goofball funny flicks. Jones is a Golden Globe nominee with consistent work – a mix of villain, comedic and at times patriarchal roles, Jeffrey Jones went from Ferris Bueller baddie to Who’s Your Caddy?...

The Most Tim Burton-y Movies Not Directed by Tim Burton
Image
Tim Burton is back. The famous filmmaker, artist and guy who showed the world that not owning a comb isn’t a dealbreaker for Monica Bellucci technically never left, but now he’s made a movie that people actually want to see for the first time in a long while.

In addition to directing the highly-anticipated sequel Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Burton just received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. And it’s well-deserved, considering his long career, which found him churning out modern classics, followed by some okay stuff, and eventually, a whole bunch of joyless CGI-filled remakes featuring Johnny Depp in increasingly goofy wigs.

Burton’s influence over the world of film has been so great, there are a number of movies with serious Tim Burton vibes that were in no way directed by Tim Burton. Some of the most Burton-y non-Burton projects include…

Melania Trump Remains Coy About Public Role In 2024: ‘Stay Tuned’
Image
Donald Trump‘s wife, Melania Trump, has remained notably absent from her husband’s 2024 reelection campaign, and sources close to the Trump campaign indicate that while she is expected to have a role in the future, the specifics and extent of her campaign activities have yet to be determined and will not ramp up any time soon.

Melania is very selective in what she wants to do and how she shows herself in public.

Melania has been mourning the loss of her mother, supporting her father, and focusing on her son, Barron, who recently turned 18 and will be preparing for college in the fall.

Even Melania’s participation in the Republican National Convention, where her husband will accept the party’s nomination, has not been finalized. Campaign officials have recently started discussions with convention organizers, but her role has not been officially confirmed.

Melania’s noticeable absence from the campaign...

Krazy House Review – Sundance 2024
Image
Not too long ago, IMDb introduced a new feature to their website called the Parents Guide. The goal was to give parents a quick rundown of risqué, violent or suggestive scenes from films, and allow them to make quick decisions as to whether or not they should allow their child to watch said movies. Parents who felt aghast that Spielberg would show a scene where a father was unable to reach his child’s outstretched hand, as in the 1991 classic Hook, might choose to skip ahead, while other parents who are appalled by children debating whether or not Wolfman has “nards”, could forgo all of Shane Black and Fred Dekker’s 1987 monster mashup Monster Squad. However, should one day their children ask them if they can sit down and watch a screening of Steffen Haars and Flip van der Kuil’s new film Krazy House, the Finnigan’s Wake length...

Supernatural Season 16 Would Need An Overdone Trope To Work
Image
Supernatural season 16 may be in development, fixing the controversial ending and easing the pain of fans. Bringing Dean back from the dead may be necessary for the new season, but it's an overused trope that lacks excitement. To keep things fresh, Supernatural season 16 needs to find a creative way to bring Dean Winchester back and avoid falling into repetition.

Although Supernatural had a shockingly long run time of fifteen seasons, which ended in 2020, it seems that the show may be revived for Supernatural season 16, and the unfortunate fact of the matter is that, in order for the series to continue, it will have to use one terribly overused trope. Supernatural is a paranormal drama series that first began in 2005. It stars Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki as brothers Dean and Sam WInchester, who have been raised since childhood to kill monsters. Though the series had a fairly final (and divisive) ending,...

CNN and NBC Set to Battle for Future of Streaming News
Image
Who’s doing it better — Kristen Welker or Jake Tapper?

The two journalists, one the new moderator of NBC News’ “Meet The Press,” the other the anchor of the weekday “The Lead” and a co-anchor of “State of the Union” at CNN, aren’t typically pitted against one another. But there they were on a recent Thursday afternoon around 4:30 p.m., duking it out for the future of their medium.

Welker was holding forth on “Meet the Press Now,” a show earmarked for streaming users on the broadband outlet NBC News Now. Tapper was anchoring his regular Thursday broadcast of “The Lead,” a program that is now also streamed to subscribers of Max, the main broadband hub of Warner Bros. Discovery. Both were grilling Republican congressmen about the recent ouster of former U.S. Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy, and, while not necessarily realizing it, hoping to appeal...

Frightfest 2023: ‘Transmission’ Review
Image
Stars: Angela Cela, Charles Chudabala, Nicole Cinaglia , Sheri Davis, Marcella Di Pasquale, Jessica Cameron, Felissa Rose, Jennifer Nangle, Sadie Katz, Alan Maxson, Dave Sheridan, Vernon Wells, Noel Jason Scott, Maria Shapley | Written and Directed by Michael Hurst

Directed by Michael J. Hurst, who has vast genre experience – helming films such as House of the Dead 2, Pumpkinhead 4 and 2006’s Darkroom, as well as writing the demented Mansquito (aka Mosquito Man), and both of Scott Adkins’ Ninja movies (personal favourites of mine) – Transmission is a dark, twisted film that feels akin to Peter Hyams’s comedy Stay Tuned, which starred John Ritter and Pam Dawber as a couple trapped in an ever-changing TV or the comedy anthology Amazon Women on the Moon that flicked between 90s TV, poking fun at the tropes of that era.

The film unfolds on a television screen as we, seeing things from the perspective of an old man,...

Gadi Schwartz’s NBC News Now Show Will Be A Rarity: A National Nightly News Show Based In Los Angeles
Image
When NBC News officially debuts Stay Tuned Now on its streaming platform tonight, it’ll be the rare national primetime news show based in Los Angeles which, because of distance and time zones, still is treated as the hinterlands from the D.C. and NYC media sphere.

Anchor Gadi Schwartz said, “For a long time, 8 o’clock rolled around and everyone’s like, ‘Oh well, we’re all done,’ and forgot that it is only 5 o’clock on the West Coast. This is a chance to reinvigorate the day’s news, and then expand the coverage with a perspective from the west looking east.”

Schwartz will be doing the NBC News Now show from the network’s broadcast studios in Universal City. The newscast is part of an expansion of Stay Tuned, the Snapchat show he’s hosted for nearly six years along with Savannah Sellers.

Beyond the headcount reduction of about 1,280 employees, one of the key casualties here are Snap-funded originals. Snap will no longer invest in new original programming, although the ones announced in May will still air as planned starting this fall.

What are/were Snap Originals? Developed with and paid for by Snapchat but produced by third-party production companies, there are more than 150 of them, including “Addison Rae Goes Home” starring influencer Addison Rae, Meme Mom” starring influencer NicoleTV, and “Coming Out,” in which LGBTQ+ influencer Manny Mua hosts a show that reflects the coming out journey for six young people. Snap to Cut 20 Percent of Staff, Snap Originals Scrapped in Major Restructuring
Image
Click here to read the full article.

Snap will lay off around 20 percent of its workforce on Wednesday, according to a memo from Snap CEO Evan Spiegel sent to employees. The layoffs will see more than 1,200 employees cut, with the company expecting to save about 500 million.

“The scale of these changes vary from team to team, depending upon the level of prioritization and investment needed to execute against our strategic priorities,” Spiegel wrote. “The extent of this reduction should substantially reduce the risk of ever having to do this again, while balancing our desire to invest in our long term future and reaccelerate our revenue growth.”

Employees impacted by the cuts will receive at least 4 months of severance, with the company telling shareholders it expects to take as much as 175 million in contract termination and impairment costs.

Spiegel also outlined a complete restructuring of the company, which will see it...

A Monster Movie with Brains (Literally): 25 Years of The Relic
Image
Almost every horror fan enjoys a good creature feature, but sometimes it can be hard to find one that plays it mostly straight without descending into complete self-parody. Peter Hyams’ The Relic is just that kind of monster movie, presenting an air of sophistication that distracts you from its roots in outright schlock.

It was one of the few times that Hyams—who has many thriller, sci-fi, and action films in his credits—jumped into the horror pool. Previously, he ventured into supernatural territory with the 1992 fantasy comedy Stay Tuned, which saw John Ritter and Pam Dawber running through a satellite dish system powered by Hell. It wasn’t exactly what many would call horror, but still, check it out if you haven’t—there’s some good dark comedy jokes that would make readers of this site cackle.

The Relic—based on the novel Relic by Douglas Preston and...

If a big story erupted at a random hour not too long ago, executives at big TV-news outlets would typically try to break into regularly scheduled network programming with one of the oldest tools in the box, a “special report.” Now, thanks to a widening fight among TV companies to capture streaming audiences, they have many new options.

When the U.S. exited Afghanistan earlier this year, ABC News collected considerable footage – more than was required for news shows like “World News Tonight” or “Good Morning America.” Rather than letting it all sit unwatched, production teams from “20/20” and “Nightline” worked to get a program, “Final Hours: America’s Longest War,” up on Hulu. ABC News, says Kim Godwin, who was named president of the Disney unit earlier this year, has used the sibling streaming-video hub to distribute everything from in-depth investigative projects from George Stephanopoulos to a detailed recent...

John Ritter Remembered as a 'Comedy Genius' by His Son Jason Ritter
Image
Late actor John Ritter was the subject of ABC's Superstar on Wednesday night, and footage from the show reveals son Jason getting emotional speaking about his late father. From Three's Company and Problem Child to 8 Simple Rules and Bad Santa, Ritter had long been a fan favorite actor on both the big and small screen. Sadly, he passed away suddenly in 2003 due to an aortic dissection.

A one-hour documentary, ABC's Superstar: John Ritter presented never-before-seen family videos along with unseen footage from a Barbara Walters interview. Also included were interviews with various names in the business who knew Ritter, like Jimmy Kimmel, Bryan Cranston, Kaley Cuoco, Henry Winkler, Suzanne Somers, and Raven-Symone. Jason Ritter, John's son, also remembers his father in footage from the show, and he gets choked up remembering the "beauty" of his father's life.

John Ritter, Pam Dawber, David Tom, and Heather McComb in Télémaniacs (1992)
How NBC News’ ‘Stay Tuned’ Cracked the Code to Getting Young People Into News
John Ritter, Pam Dawber, David Tom, and Heather McComb in Télémaniacs (1992)
Are the keys to appealing to young, would-be news consumers telling them stories about people their age and covering topics that appeal just to them? NBC News’ “Stay Tuned,” the Snapchat Discover show that celebrated its fourth anniversary Monday, bets that it is: A scroll through recent episodes reveals coverage of a suspected poisoning at a music festival, the appeal of Y2K fashion for people too young to remember the 2000s and “cannabis-related degrees” — which are branded “the hot new thing.” After producing 2,500 episodes — more than any other show on the Discover platform — “Stay Tuned” has emerged as one of the most-watched news shows on Snapchat with 10.5 million subscribers. All told, nearly 1 million viewers watch each twice-daily episode, on average, and 91% are under the age of 35. “It’s essential to our success that we really get our audience,” executive producer Angela Grande told TheWrap, noting recent stories on going...

Streaming Wars Send TV News Outlets Searching for New Screens
Image
TV streaming wars have erupted in Hollywood and are wreaking havoc on Madison Avenue. They are even making a splash in places like Gainesville, Ga.

Wesley Lowery recently visited this town in the northeastern portion of the state, part of an effort to create a report for “60 Minutes Plus,” the new streaming-news counterpart to the venerable CBS newsmagazine. Lowery, one of a handful of correspondents hired for the Paramount Plus series, focuses on the plight of health care workers amid the coronavirus pandemic. “A lot of them haven’t had much relief,” notes the journalist, who takes a few minutes to discuss his work even though he has just about 48 hours before his story is slated to go out over the digital ether.

TV counterparts such as Lesley Stahl or Bill Whitaker usually get 12 to 13 minutes to tell their stories. Lowery says he may get as many as 20 to 30. “We are at a time when,...

Peacock to Debut Millennial-Focused News Show ‘The Overview,’ Hosted By NBC News’ Gadi Schwartz (Exclusive)
Image
Wearing a dark gray hoodie and framed by neon lights in a garage, NBC News’ Gadi Schwartz is forgoing the traditional suit and anchor’s desk as he explains to viewers the growing conversation around climate change, as exemplified by California’s shrinking Salton Sea. The graphics are snappy, the aerial footage is grand, and the explanation is conversational — that is to say, very millennial-friendly.

This is “The Overview,” Peacock’s new younger-skewing news show that will debut on NBCUniversal’s streaming service on Jan. 16, as Variety has exclusively learned. Three episodes will premiere on the service at launch, followed by weekly Saturday episodes.

Schwartz, an NBC News and MSNBC correspondent who has covered the 2020 election, immigration issues along the U.S.-Mexico border and the Olympics, leads something of a journalistic double life. He speaks both to the older demographics who watch traditional linear broadcast and cable news as...

NBC News Sets Launch of Morning Show on 24-Hour Streaming Service, After Six-Month Covid Delay
Image
NBC News Now, the 24/7 streaming service from NBC News, was going to expand its live coverage to the East Coast’s morning hours in April. Then the coronavirus hit.

Six months later, the four-hour weekday “Morning News Now” is now ready to roll, starting Oct. 12 — and not a minute too soon, as the already-clamorous news cycle hits a new crescendo. The show will be anchored by Savannah Sellers (above left), NBC News correspondent and co-host of NBC’s “Stay Tuned” series on Snapchat, and NBC News correspondent Joe Fryer (above right). It’s set to air 7-11 a.m. Et Monday-Friday.

But NBC has a morning show: the long-running “Today” program, which also has a companion online service that streams around-the-clock. Janelle Rodriguez, senior VP of editorial for NBC News who oversees NBC News Now, argued that “Morning News Now” won’t cannibalize “Today” viewership (or vice versa).

“We don...

Rachel Weisz To Star In & Produce ‘Dead Ringers’ TV Series Reboot In Works At Amazon From ‘Normal People’ Scribe Alice Birch & Annapurna TV
Image
In her first major foray into TV series, Rachel Weisz is set to headline and executive produce Dead Ringers, a reimagining with a gender swap of David Cronenberg’s cult classic 1980s film. Amazon has given a straight-to-series order to the project, from Weisz, Alice Birch, lead writer of Hulu’s acclaimed Normal People series, Annapurna Television and Morgan Creek Entertainment, the company behind the original movie.

In Dead Ringers, written by Birch, The Mantle twins, played by Weisz, are the most successful, brilliant and extraordinary people you’ve never met. Identical from head to toe, these two Ob-gyn’s are on a mission to change the way women birth, starting with Manhattan. Drugs, pioneering but very much illegal medical research, sex and falling in love, this drama based on the David Cronenberg 80s cult classic, takes us to darker and stranger territory than we could have possibly imagined.

Networks Unveil Convention Coverage Plans; Broadcasters To Air One Hour Per Night

The broadcast and cable networks have been waiting to finalize their plans as it became clear that the conventions will be almost all virtual, as Democrats last week scrapped plans for speakers in the host city of Milwaukee and Republicans abandoned a large-scale convention amid the pandemic. Image
After decades spent fighting TV’s never-ending battle for morning-news dominance, NBC’s “Today” is launching a salvo on another front: Hollywood’s streaming wars.

NBC is set to debut “Today All Day,” a round-the-clock “feed” of material from its venerable A.M. program. The offering will be available starting Wednesday on Peacock, the new streaming-video outlet from parent NBCUniversal, as well as on Today.com. NBC hopes to distribute the new product via other venues as well, says Chris Berend, executive vice president of digital for NBC News Group, in an interview.

The show’s four weekday hours and its two weekend editions will remain intact on NBC’s broadcast network. But streaming fans should not expect to get caught up on the news by Savannah Guthrie and Hoda Kotb at 7 a.m. on the dot or watch Al Roker tell them to stand by for weather “in your...
