Mistress Dispeller (2025) ‘Cph:dox’ Movie Review: Stunningly layered Chinese doc scrutinises all sides of a love triangle
Cate Blanchett in Elizabeth (1998)
Elizabeth Lo’s Mistress Dispeller (2025) opens with an instant stab. Mrs Li gets a new haircut and her husband doesn’t even notice it. He’s been distracted for a while, growing distant. The love between them, once held as exemplary in their neighbourhood, is now freezing over as his interest and attachment fade away. When she discovers his affair, she baulks at directly confronting him. Instead, she hires a ‘mistress dispeller’, a phenomenon in China and someone who immerses themselves in the situation so as to terminate the affair and turn the marriage back to how it was originally.

Even as Mrs Li talks about the heartbreaking reality of her husband’s cheating, she can’t help but praise his cooking to Wang, the mistress dispeller. From being known as a couple who held hands on streets, they have diverged. She says how she thought she could entrust her life to him.

Image
Quick Links Joan Crawford Played a Witty Mistress in 1939’s The Women The Women Was Remade as a Musical in the 1950s The Last Adaptation of the Women Starred Meg Ryan in 2008

1939's The Women might not be a movie as well-remembered as other classic films, but it's managed to be re-introduced into the cultural zeitgeist time and time again. Its most recent iteration was produced in 2008, but it began as a stage play. Featuring an all-female cast, The Women was first presented in 1936 and was written by Clare Booth as a comedy of manners. It follows a Manhattan socialite who discovers her husband is having an affair and the way her inner circle of friends and acquaintances reacts to the situation. The original production ran for 657 performances from December 26, 1936, to July 9, 1938, before closing.

In 1937, Max Gordon and Harry M. Goetz of Max Gordon Plays and Pictures Corporation planned a...

What happened to Forrester on FBI: International? (Luke Kleintank exit explained)
Image
It’s true, Forrester is no longer part of the FBI: International team and we’ve seen the last of the Fly Team’s leader, at least for the time being.

From the start, Luke Kleintank’s agent Scott Forrester was not only a key member of the cast, but was the face of FBI: International as the lead of the third spinoff of CBS’s hit FBI franchise. Forrester oversaw the elite team of agents as they navigated the web of red tape that comes from working international crime cases abroad involving US citizens.

Given he was the lead the not only the show, but also the Fly Team, fans never expected that they’d bid farewell to Forrester as early in the show’s run. Sadly, though, Forrester has left the show.

“Jealous Mistress” – The Fly Team heads to Vienna to find the culprit of an acid attack...

How To Solve The Riddle of the Night in Baldur’s Gate 3
Image
One thing that is sure to be noticed in Baldur's Gate 3 is the insurmountable amount of puzzles that must be solved in order to make progress throughout the game, one of which is the Riddle of the Night. Though this puzzle isn't one of the most difficult ones to be found in the game, it can get a little confusing if you overthink it.

The Riddle of the Night puzzle in Baldur's Gate 3 is going to be found in the Silent Library and pertains to a pedestal in the room. The riddle itself states simply "What can silence the Nightsong?" and players will receive no more information than that. Solving the riddle will require a specific book that can be found in the Silent Library.

Where To Find The Riddle Of The Night

Best Greta Gerwig Films
Image
Over the past 17 years, Greta Gerwig has made a name for herself in the independent film genre as an actor and filmmaker. Although she's stepped out of her comfort zone once or twice, her films tend to follow a specific pattern. Her characters are creative, spirited, romantic young women who go against the grain, ruffle feathers and have a strong sense of self. Her themes usually include identity, relationships and the need to question societal norms. Her greatest strengths lie in comedy, drama and emotional honesty.

Although Greta Gerwig's style and skills have matured over the years, she's maintained a consistent level of excellence. Her earlier films are above-average, and her performances are rarely dull or unforgettable. Nonetheless, there are some films that may be considered her best.

‘Ru Paul’s Drag Race 15×07’ Review
Image
I have discussed numerous times about the Drag Race universe and the importance of throughlines across seasons/versions/iterations. This is why initially I thought it was an incredible idea that the iconic Daytona Winds challenge would re-appear in this week’s episode but with a slight twist in genre. For those who did not watch the episode you can learn about it here but this was a unique acting challenge where the queens were shocked to discover that farting noises were added in post-production leading to a hilarious series of events, however the situational comedy version of this show had no farts to be heard! The highlight for the episode however was the aftermath of the drama between Mistress Isabelle Brooks and Malaysia Babydoll Foxx boiling over only for them to act alongside each other in the challenge (leading to them being a highlight of the acting performance!) At...

Elvira Channels Carole Baskin in Big Bat Rescue Tiger King Parody
Joe Exotic in Au royaume des fauves (2020)
The new Netflix documentary series Tiger King has taken the world by storm since its release last month, and now Elvira is getting in on the phenomenon. Primarily, the series explores the bizarre feud between big cat owners Joe Exotic and Carole Baskin which ends with the former landing in prison for allegedly trying to have the latter killed. As dark as that sounds, the series has spawned countless memes and parodies with even many celebrities getting involved, opening the door for the Mistress of the Dark to give her own take on Tiger King.

Taking to Twitter, Elvira channels Baskin by wearing a flower crown similar to the one worn by the Big Cat Rescue CEO. "Hey, all you cool bats and spiders, this is Elvira from Big Bat Rescue," the horror hostess says in the video, adding she wants to "clear up some nasty rumors" about her husband,...

Robert De Niro, Ray Liotta, and Joe Pesci in Les Affranchis (1990)
‘Goodfellas’ Actor Chuck Low is Dead at 89
Robert De Niro, Ray Liotta, and Joe Pesci in Les Affranchis (1990)
According to his New York Times obituary, Chuck Low died last month in a New Jersey nursing home at the age of 89. Low will be best remembered by movie fans as Morrie — the toupee salesman who gets in way too deep with the mob in Martin Scorsese’s “Goodfellas” — but his career and life stretched well beyond his memorable movie roles.

Born in New York City in 1928, Low was a military veteran who served in the U.S. Army, became an engineer who made marine instruments, and in the 1960s started a real estate partnership with Lehman Brothers. Low became a pioneer developer in Tribeca, playing a key role in the New York City neighborhood’s transformation into luxury lofts and high-end restaurants. It was in this capacity that he met Tribeca’s most famous resident Robert De Niro, who became both Low’s tenant and friend.

It was through...

Eli Wallach in Our Family Honor (1985)
Legendary 'The Good The Bad & The Ugly' star Eli Wallach passes away at 98
Eli Wallach in Our Family Honor (1985)
98 years old. Remarkable. I can't imagine making it to 98. I can't imagine the breadth of life experience you could have in that amount of time. Eli Wallach leaves behind a truly great filmography and a family life that is enviable, having been married to the same woman, Anne Jackson, since 1948. She had a hell of a filmography herself, and they had three children together. I am in awe of anyone who can build a life that solid for that long, never mind someone who works in the film industry, where relationships are, at best, impermanent, and at worst, inconsequential. Wallach will leave an amazing legacy onscreen, but he was part of something larger, a total shift in the way acting was approached, and telling his story is telling the story of that paradigm change. He was part of that first wave of Method actors who made the jump from their...

Notebook's 6th Writers Poll: Fantasy Double Features of 2013
Looking back over the year at what films moved and impressed us, it is clear that watching old films is a crucial part of making new films meaningful. Thus, the annual tradition of our end of year poll, which calls upon our writers to pick both a new and an old film: they were challenged to choose a new film they saw in 2013—in theaters or at a festival—and creatively pair it with an old film they also saw in 2013 to create a unique double feature.

All the contributors were given the option to write some text explaining their 2013 fantasy double feature. What's more, each writer was given the option to list more pairings, with or without explanation, as further imaginative film programming we'd be lucky to catch in that perfect world we know doesn't exist but can keep dreaming of every time we go to the movies.

Robert De Niro at an event for A Single Man (2009)
Quiz: Can You Identify Robert De Niro’s Lesser-Known Roles?
Robert De Niro at an event for A Single Man (2009)
In his half-century as a film actor, Robert De Niro has played some of Hollywood's most iconic characters: Travis Bickle, Jake Lamotta, Max Cady, Jack Byrnes. But he’s become much more prolific as he’s gotten older; Last Vegas, which opens today, is his fourth movie this year, and there are still two more to come. It's hard to keep track of all these roles, as for every Vito Corleone there are a dozen Evan Wrights. If you knew that Wright is his character from 1992’s Mistress, you're going to be great at this quiz, which tests your ability to match descriptions of De Niro's lesser-known roles with the movies that spawned them.

Tribeca Film Festival 2012: What Drives Robert De Niro
Robert De Niro in Panique à Hollywood (2008)
Robert De Niro in “Red Lights”

Robert De Niro and his longtime producing partner Jane Rosenthal have been working together for more than 20 years at Tribeca Productions. Over that time, they have produced more than two dozen movies, ranging from indie fare like the funny but financially unsuccessful Hollywood satire “What Just Happened?” to wildly profitable franchise films, like the “Meet the Parents” trilogy.

In 2002, they started the Tribeca Film Festival as a creative response to the devastation of downtown...

The Music Room (Criterion) Satyajit Ray’s 1958 masterpiece looks at the life of a fallen aristocrat as a metaphor for an India that is not only becoming Westernized, but modernized technologically and culturally beyond recognition. When the beloved music room, where he has hosted lavish concerts in the past, starts falling into disrepair as attendance drops steadily, the man realizes his way of life is vanishing. Stunningly shot in black & white, one of Ray’s finest works. Bonuses: Documentary on Ray from 1984 by Shyam Benegal; Interviews with Ray biographer Andrew Robinson and filmmaker Mira Nair; Excerpt from 1981 roundtable discussion between Ray, critic Michael Ciment, director Claude Sautet. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Full screen. Dolby 1.0 mono.

Beauty And The Beast (Criterion) Jean Cocteau’s sublime adaptation of the classic fairy tale become a beloved classic upon its 1946 release, and hasn’t faded since.

New this Week: ‘Super 8,’ ‘Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer’ and ‘Sanctum (DVD)’
Hitting movie theaters this weekend:

Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer – Jordana Beatty, Heather Graham, Parris Mosteller

Super 8 - Elle Fanning, Amanda Michalka, Kyle Chandler

Movie of the Week

Super 8

The Stars: Elle Fanning, Amanda Michalka, Kyle Chandler

The Plot: After witnessing a mysterious train crash, a group of friends in the summer of 1979 begin noticing strange happenings going around in their small town, and begin to investigate into the creepy phenomenon.

The Buzz: The trailer for Super 8 sent shivers down my spine — good shivers. This film looks to be a beautifully crafted Spielbergian throwback. I’m pleased with the lack of A-list actors too. There’s been an air of mystery around this whole production, as J.J.Abrams and company did their best at keeping everything about this film on the hush-hush. I’ll be checking it out as soon as humanly possible...

Celebrity Scandal: Brigitte Nielsen embarrassing Maria Shriver, why?
Here's the latest celeb gossip excerpt from a post originally featured on Green Celebrity Network (http://greencelebrity.net). The website says...

Celebrity Scandal! Brigitte Nielsen embarrassing Maria Shriver more by announcing she was sleeping with Schwarzenegger as well? [Jun. 5 -- Editorial] More bad news for Maria Shriver related to Arnold Schwarzenegger and his Hollywood mistress list. It seems reality television and former movie actress Brigitte Nielsen, ex-wife of Sylvester Stallone and former Conan The Barbarian series movie starlet who once played the role of Red Sonja is glamming on the press junket celebrity scandal wagon by being the first Hollywood star to say she too was having an affair with Arnold Schwarzenegger behind Maria Shriver's back. Talk about kicking your friend Arnold in the testes while he is down! The six-foot blond who has become a bit of a joke in Hollywood now after her very public affair with rapper Flava-a-flav (and...

Black Swan Soundtrack
The Black Swan soundtrack. There are many wondrously skilled musicians across the globe whose bands have dispersed before their time, who have not been fortunate enough to be in a Radiohead, or a Red Hot Chili Peppers, a Queens Of The Stone Age or a Green Day. No appearance on Cribs for them, few residual sales, sod all in the savings account, almost nothing of monetary value to show for five or eight or twelve years making records and being in magazines. For these musicians their creative life becomes back-story, and out of necessity they forge new careers – maybe in production like Ian Broudie (The Lightning Seeds) or in criticism like Andy Gill (Gang of Four). The vast majority fade away, go to work in suits and ties, open a vegetarian cafe or a bar, start a sub-par later-life band and tour provincial town halls, or, like the lead singer...

Four 80s Films That Deserve To Be Remade
Ever since it was announced last week that there was going to be a feature-length remake of Buffy the Vampire Slayer (not even the television show; the movie), the fan community has been reacting with the predictable mixture of horror at what the producers could possibly be conceiving and inability to comprehend who this reboot could possibly be aimed at.

Admittedly, I don’t really know. But this in addition to a long stream of other recent remakes (we're all looking at you, Platinum Dunes), are conspiring to take the few remaining strands of original thought in Hollywood and squish them like so many grapes between the toes of a Frenchman (they do that, you know; it's how wine is made). It’d be easy to complain here, but I’d feel like I was simply copying and pasting older articles and simply replacing Psycho or The Wicker Man or...
