Definitely not a Sweet Child of Mine

Cobbled together is the best way to describe Gun n' Rose, for all its star-studded cast brings to the table we end up surrounded by tiresome comedy routines and a script that feels like it was written in a drunken afternoon with the added challenge of fitting in as many gangster flick clichés as possible. There's little to no structure with this Clarence Ford-helmed mess, only existing to serve one purpose; give its stars as many opportunities to look cool as possible, the effortlessly badass Andy Lay in particular, oozing charmisa throughout. The action is completely over-the-top, but effective in that acrobatic guns blazing style, with some brilliantly choreographed and inventive set pieces sprinkled throughout the film's rapid runtime, however, the horrendously disorienting editing is what sadly kills it; all those fancy moves are nothing if you can't follow where everyone is in terms of proximity to one another or even master a basic cut. The cast feels rather wasted or just flat-out misplaced here, Leon Lai is blandly intense while Simon Yam gets almost nothing to do, Lau is admittedly one of the film's saving graces but it's easy to see how his smarmy persona can quickly grate on the viewer. Even more out of place is Alan Tang, who uses an army of stunt doubles to achieve dizzying stunts that he clearly isn't suited for as he can barely jump two feet off the ground. Since he's also the producer of the film, Gun n' Rose ultimately feels like a well-staged vanity project more than coherent entertainment, still some decent music, a killer main theme, choice performances and fun action do make up for the film's shortcomings; there is undoubtedly a fan base for this film, although, sadly, I am not amongst them.

A triad crime drama from Alan Tang

Gun and Rose (1992) is about a triad family who's leader (Alan Tang) is implicated in some serious crimes (such as murder for one). He has to leave the family and go into hiding. The family "business" is in the hands of his two brother one is crazy (Simon Yam) the other is spineless (Bowie Lam). While Simon Yam plots to whack his older brother, Alan Tang is hiding out in a fishing village an befriends a likable rogue (Andy Lau) and her annoying sister (Carrie Ng). Simon learns about his brother's where abouts and decides to make his life very uncomfortable. Will Alan get back into action and take out Simon or will he become another victim of his madness?

A surprise to me how enjoyable this movie was. There's plenty of action and a lot of out of place comedy (courtesy of Andy Lau). One scene has Andy Lau dancing away to music from a juke box. Simon Yam is his wing nut self whilst Bowie Lam plays the role of a weak willed push over. Alan Tang also gets to prove that he still has it.

Recommended if you can find a copy.

      Too ridiculous for words!

As a longtime fan of Hong Kong movies I can say that I am very forgiving to trivial matters like plot as long as it is compensated by good action, humor or good performances. While the action scenes are decent it nowhere near is impressive. Also while this movie has the impression of being an action movie it isn't. The action scenes are too short so it is impossible too get to enjoy them. The focus here is on the plot. Which is silly since there is not much plot to speak of. Most of what we get to see are supposedly funny scenes with Andy Lau showing off his leader skills. Usually I have no problem with Andy Lau's style of comedy. In this movie however it is simply out of place. The other performances by normally good actors like Simon Yam and Leon Lai are below average. It's like they think they are in a serious triad movie and deliver their lines accordingly. Resulting in a complete farce. Alan Tang is Alan Tang. He is the only one who gets away with keeping a straight face in this ridiculous movie. For a much better Andy Lau Alan Tang combo I refer to Return Engagement which is a masterpiece compared to this. Especially if you love Heroic Bloodshed.

      The end of an era

This movie was in my recollection one of the last one man gangster showdown (3 in this case) but still a marvelous nostalgic to the 90s hongkong gangster flick where the protagonist literally load himself with guns and go blazing.

Brings back lots of memories, it got everything i like from the era, alan tang was just oozing charisma all over.

Would recommend this if you like hongkong gangster movies

      A Solid Film

If you are just looking for straight action this is not that kinda film but it still have cool scenes. The story and character seem to have hit me in an emotional way. You feel for the characters. Give the movie a break. It came out in a time with lots of films like this but there is more to it that kung fu and guns.

I found myself just at a standstill for some scenes. Now the editing and pacing can be a bit meh but its still worth a watch for a balanced film touch many genres.

I love seeing andy lau do his thing as always. So that was a major plus for me and i ended up really liking an actress after seeing her role in this.
