Famous Primates in Film: A Brief History
Later this month, the mighty Kong returns to the big screen! To celebrate, we’re looking back at all the major primate appearances in film.

For as long as films were being made, humans have starred alongside primates. Unlike other animals, their human-like qualities can lend a sense of comedy or horror. Throughout the history of film, primates have been used to fulfill certain roles. In the early days, they were often a form of antagonist, carrying out dastardly deeds or causing mayhem. More common is the primate cast in a role of mischief, causing all sorts of comedic hijincks. While most primate roles were portrayed by live animals, it was not uncommon for men to dress up in ape suits for roles where the primates needed to carry out specific actions. Later, the advent of CGI has led to men mimicking primates in real time to create a motion-capture performance.

Truck Turner | Blu-ray Review
Kino Lorber resurrects the obscure and fascinating 1974 Blaxploitation gem Truck Turner this month for the first time on Blu-ray. One of Isaac Hayes’ most notable acting performances, it’s a head above the general trend of similar genre titles of the period, even though the film features a familiar narrative already well re-tread by the time of its release. Hayes fashions his own soundtrack for this retro classic, an oddity begging to be rediscovered.

Truck Turner (Hayes) is a football star turned bounty hunter, in the midst of hunting down a vicious, sadistic pimp named Gator (Paul Harris) with the help of his sidekick, Jerry (Alan Weeks). But Gator proves a hard target to pin down, leading up to a dramatic showdown where Truck is forced to kill the pimp in self-defense. His death causes a ripple in the criminal community of Los Angeles and forces the aggressively violent Madame...

Project X Zone 2: announcement trailer
Characters from Resident Evil, Devil May Cry, Soul Calibur and more collide in Project X Zone 2 for 3Ds. Here's the first trailer...

First appearing in Japan back in 2012, Project X Zone was a tactical RPG with a twist: its characters were culled from some of the country's biggest videogame series, including Street Fighter, Resident Evil, Mega Man X and Dead Rising.

Three years later, and here comes the sequel, which once again brings together some famous videogame faces for the Nintendo 3Ds - these include Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine from Resident Evil, Dante and Virgil from Devil May Cry and Jim Kazama and Kazuya Mishima from Tekken.

One of the fun things about the original Project X Zone was that it also brought back some more obscure characters as player-assisting Solo Units - Arthur from Ghosts 'N Goblins made a welcome appearance, for example, along with Opa-Opa from Sega's...

Kristen Stewart
Kristen Stewart continues her own path with new Kelly Reichardt film
Kristen Stewart
Did you know that Kristen Stewart made history a week ago? The 24-year-old actress became the first American woman to win a prestigious Cesar Award, France's own version of the Academy Award. She also won it for an English-speaking role.  Think about that for a second.  This honor hasn't been bestowed upon Meryl Streep, Michelle Williams, Sigourney Weaver, Natalie Portman, Glenn Close, Susan Sarandon or any other globally acclaimed American actress over the past 30 years. No, it was Kristen Stewart who broke the French's reticence to reward anyone but their own.  Stewart, an actress who continues to (mostly) put studio work behind her following a string of acclaimed performance in indie films over the past year.  That career path continues with her next endeavor, the "Untitled Kelly Reichardt Project," In case the name is unfamiliar to you, Reichardt is an acclaimed director whose movies include festival favorites "Night Moves," "Meek's Cutoff" and "Wendy and Lucy.

How to Differentiate Movies With the Same Title
It's a horror story that any movie fan can relate to, Twi-Hard or not: You're watching TV and you see the name of your favorite movie listed on your channel guide, only to flip over and discover that the "Twilight" they're showing doesn't have Edward and Jacob battling for the love of Bella — but instead Gene Hackman and Paul Newman fighting over Susan Sarandon.

You were just punked by Same Name Syndrome. (Hey, at least it also includes a topless Reese Witherspoon.)

It happens often. In fact, just this week, "The Butler" hits theaters ... except it's officially titled "Lee Daniels' The Butler," 'cause the rights to the title "The Butler" belong to a 1916 silent short film that no one's ever seen (yes, really). Read all about that silly saga here.

Anyway, here's our guide on How to Differentiate Movies With the Same Title (That Are Not Remakes).

'Savages' (2012) vs.

Last Vegas trailer: The Hangover meets its match?
Fancy another film about four guys in Sin City? This one offers Robert De Niro, Michael Douglas and Morgan Freeman – but a disappointing shortage of both tigers and Mike Tyson

Reading on mobile? Click here to view

The Hangover might just be the most influential movie of the modern age. It's spawned two sequels, made box-office stars out of almost everyone in it and – crucially – got other films lining up to compare themselves to it. Google "The Hangover meets" if you don't believe me: Hot Tub Time Machine was "The Hangover meets Back to the Future", Project X was "The Hangover meets Cloverfield", Aftershock is "The Hangover meets The Impossible" and 21 and Over is "The Hangover meets Superbad". It's endless.

Which makes the upcoming Last Vegas The Hangover meets … what, exactly? It's definitely The Hangover meets something, because it's about a gang of men on the loose in Las Vegas,...

As we wade through the 2013 awards season celebrating the best films, you can’t have the greats without the clunkers. After much thought, the Geeks came together and decided to have one last look at 2012 with our list of the 10 Worst Films. Our list kicks off with the “dishonorable mention” - Project X.

Found footage: it’s not just for cheap horror flicks anymore! This celebration of binge drinking and property damage is supposedly all shot by a member of the film’s junior “wolfpack”. When his parents leave him home alone for his 21st birthday (they’re off on an anniversary/second honeymoon trip.

Morning Meme: Brendan Ayanbadejo Thinks 3% of the NFL Is Gay, Nicholas Hoult Finds Being a Zombie Boring, and Does the Bible Need an Amendment For Gay Rights?
Matt Damon was a major Obama supporter in 2008, but has expressed his disappointment with the President over the last year. Still, he voted for him. “I assume there will be some Supreme Court appointments in this next term; that alone was reason to vote for him. I don’t think I said anything a lot of people weren’t thinking. It’s easier now more than ever in my life to feel the fix is in, the game is rigged and no matter how hard you work to change things, it just doesn’t matter.”

Not that the writing wasn't on the wall, but NBC has officially passed on Mockingbird Lane.

Is anyone else surprised that the most pirated movie of 2012 was teen party movie Project X?

I really encourage you to go read a straight actor's (reluctant) confession that he's still uncomfortable playing a gay man, a realization he...

The HeyUGuys UK DVD/Blu-Ray Release Round-Up – 2nd July
After the release of one of the highest-grossing British films in recent years last week with The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, we’ve got an entirely different selection lining the shelves this week with John Carter, one of the year’s biggest blockbusters, now available for your home entertainment.

And beside it, a critically acclaimed new Us series, Falling Skies, produced by none other than Steven Spielberg, which aired in the States last summer.

Not only that, but we have an excellent Blu-ray Steelbook re-release of Batman Begins / The Dark Knight, so needless to say, it’s a good week to be a Batman fan and/or steelbook collector.

My picks of the week:

Andrew Stanton’s John Carter & Kenneth Lonergan’s Margaret.

Falling Skies – Season 1.

And for good measure, the Blu-ray re-releases of Christopher Nolan’s Batman Begins / The Dark Knight & Kevin Smith’s Mallrats & Ben Stiller’s Zoolander.

[Now Streaming] Your ‘Lucky One,’ ‘Chimpanzee’ & ‘Marley’ Alternatives
Each week within this column we strive to pair the latest in theatrical releases to worthwhile titles currently available on Netflix Instant Watch. This week we offer alternatives to The Lucky One, Chimpanzee & Marley.

Zac Efron fronts this Nicholas Sparks’ drama about a Marine who, upon returning from his tour of duty in Iraq, goes in search of the unknown woman he believes was his lucky charm. Taylor Schilling co-stars; Scott Hicks directs.

Craving more veteran-centered dramas:

A Marine Story (2010) Dreya Weber stars as a Marine forced to make sense of civilian life after being abruptly discharged. Initially lost, she finds new purpose mentoring a troubled teen girl with aims to enlist. Paris P. Pickard co-stars; Ned Farr directs.

The Messenger (2009) In this acclaimed indie drama Woody Harrelson and Ben Foster play a pair of vets assigned the emotionally devastating duty of informing military family’s of a soldier’s death.

Weekend Box-Office: 'The Lorax' Busts Out with $70 Million
The big story this week is The Lorax as it simply shattered expectations and became quite the box-office monster. So let's have a look. Laremy predicted the #1 movie correctly 1 Weeks In A Row Dr. Seuss' The Lorax Laremy may have picked it to finish #1, but his prediction was almost doubled as The Lorax now holds the highest opening for a Dr. Seuss adaptation, the fourth largest opening for Universal of all-time, it is only $190,000 shy of becoming the second highest march opening and it's the largest opening for an animated non-sequel ever. That's a lot to brag about, I just wish I liked it so I could be a little more excited.

As far as predictions go, Laremy's $37.8 million was clearly low, but looking over the reader predictions and no one was expecting this one to do this kind of a number. The closest prediction on the board belonged to...

Weekend Meme: "Goon" Gets Gay, Naked Pictures of Kathy Griffin Are "A Foreign Land" To Anderson Cooper, and Nph Dances With Sailors
We told you Friday that Zachary Quinto was returning for the second season of American Horror Story, joining Jessica Lange. At the Paley Fest round table it was announced that hottie Evan Peters, along with Sarah Paulson and Lily Rabe would also return. All Ryan Murphy will say is they're playing characters who are the opposite of what they played before, which is a shame, because I found Tate all sorts of sexy, in an ax murderer sort of way.

Scientists are anxious to launch Justin Bieber into space. No, really.

Afer's Chad Griffin has been named the new head of the Human Rights Campaign. "Momentum is on our side, but that kid that I used to be, there are thousands if not millions of them out there, in Arkansas and [elsewhere]."

Rental Confusion: Project X And 7 More Movie Titles To Avoid Mixing Up
Wait, so Project X . which opens in theaters on March 2 . doesn.t star Matthew Broderick as a rule-breaking Air Force pilot who needs Helen Hunt.s help to save a research-lab-full of chimpanzees from radiation poisoning? Man, is my Netflix queue going to be confused in a few months when the bawdy, found-footage teen party comedy of the same name makes its way to home video. Why would Hollywood use the exact same title for a wildly different movie? Not to mention the fact that people who.ve managed to see Project X already . the new one, not the chimp one . tell me that there.s absolutely no reason for that title. This isn.t the first time this has happened, and you know it isn.t going to be the last. Here are eight of our favorite movie-title mix-ups. Commit them to memory, so you don.t get stuck...

The Avengers: new trailer
Joss Whedon’s newly dubbed Avengers Assemble has a lovely new trailer for you to watch. You can do so within...

Whatever you make of the decision to change the name of The Avengers to Avengers Assemble in the UK - and we’ve already read numerous Twitter comments that it sounds like a Power Rangers movie, or that the Marvel heroes have bought some flat-pack furniture from Ikea - that doesn’t dampen our enthusiasm for the film itself.

Neither does the splendid new trailer enclosed below, which hints at all the things we’d want in an Avengers movie - Thor tossing his hammer about, lots of action, and best of all, Hulk breaking stuff. Can Joss Whedon’s film reach the high bar set by last year’s Marvel movies, Captain America and Thor? It’s looking likely, bewildering though the late name change is.

Apparently, the...

Close up: It's Oscar Time
The nominees are busy rehearsing their speeches and practising their fixed grins. Will you be joining us for Oscars night?

The big story

Our legs are wobbly, our faces drawn. We're staggering, arms out-stretched, to the finish line, which is marked by two giant, golden statuettes. The heartbeat quickens as a cooling breeze brings the whispered word: "Os-car".

Yes – film's night of nights is almost upon us. Just 72 hours to go before a whole new brood of Academy-approved board-treaders are unleashed on to the waiting public. There will be glitz, there will be tears, there will be air-kissing.

We're stumbling on, thanks to a couple of shots of pre-ceremony controversy from doctors McQueen and Baron Cohen. Tuesday saw the Shame director tell the Press Association that the film's star, Michael Fassbender, hadn't been nominated for the best actor award because of America's "fear of sex". Then on Wednesday Sascha Baron...

Are Found Footage Films Gimmicks To Excuse Poor Film-Making?
There’s a trend with film-makers working on relatively low budget productions now to go the ‘found footage’ route. It was once primarily the domain of horror pictures but with the likes of the superhero movie Chronicle this year, other genres are starting to be subsumed by this filmic ‘style’.

Of course, it was The Blair Witch Project in 1999 that really exploded the found footage bubble (though there were others before this like 1980′s infamous Cannibal Holocaust), purporting to be the ‘actual’ documentary film that three teenagers were making, the film was presented as the chilling record of what might have become of them. The brilliance of this approach was that (a) you could get away with some very dodgy and amateur camerawork (b) you could legitimately break the fourth wall and try to connect with the audience more directly (c) you really put the audience in the character’s...

Project X (retro trailer)
There’s a flick called Project X opening soon. I thought it would be a pointless remake about military chimps. It isn’t: it’s a teenaged Hangover. But it makes me think of the 1987 flick. Yes, it’s Ferris Bueller Joins the Air Force. With monkeys. And space-age technology. And monkeys using space-age technology. I bet this is all more realistic than the upcoming Project X.

In defence of found footage movies
Are found footage movies a cheap-to-make fad, or are they a natural extension of classic storytelling? Here’s Ryan’s view of a divisive genre…

The finest storytellers are confidence tricksters. It’s their ability to convince us that what they’re telling us is real that makes their tall tales so engrossing – they blur the lines between fiction and reality, to the point where are brains struggle to see the join between one and the other.

This is why so many novels and short stories were written in the first person, or incorporated real-world events: their writers wanted to convince their readers that what they were reading was fact, even as the stories span off into unreality. Robinson Crusoe was written by Daniel Defoe as a first-person account of a castaway. Jonathan Swift’s Gulliver’s Travels was written in the style of a traveller’s work of non-fiction,...

Weekend Meme: Ralph Fiennes Reads "Harry Potter" Slashfic, Becki Newton Romances Nph, and Jason Segel Is "Jeff, Who Lives At Home"
The big news this weekend isn't out of Sundance. It's that joining Mark Ruffalo as Ned Weeks in Ryan Murphy's The Normal Heart movie are Matt Bomer as Felix Turner, Julia Roberts as Dr. Emma Brookner, Alec Baldwin as Week's brother, and Jim Parsons will reprise his Broadway role. Did I mention that Brad Pitt is producing? I'd say that Larry Kramer has to be thrilled with this cast, but as I was reminded this morning, Kramer doesn't do thrilled.

Hazel Jones, the woman with two fully formed vaginas, has rejected Vivid Entertainment's $1 million offer. How'd you like that transition?

It turns out that Swizz Beats was never the CEO of MegaUpload, despite what his people had said. Probably for the best, really.

Contributing to Newt Gingrich's victory in the South Carolina primary this weekend was the endorsement of increasingly cranky Chuck Norris. But it was probably mostly the not-Romney victory.

Tatsumi (2011)
Trailers are an under-appreciated art form insofar that many times they’re seen as vehicles for showing footage, explaining films away, or showing their hand about what moviegoers can expect. Foreign, domestic, independent, big budget: I celebrate all levels of trailers and hopefully this column will satisfactorily give you a baseline of what beta wave I’m operating on, because what better way to hone your skills as a thoughtful moviegoer than by deconstructing these little pieces of advertising? Some of the best authors will tell you that writing a short story is a lot harder than writing a long one, that you have to weigh every sentence. What better medium to see how this theory plays itself out beyond that than with movie trailers? Tatsumi Trailer "Yoshihiro Tatsumi is a mangaka known for his gekiga style of alternate Japanese manga." Wish I knew what that meant. Director Eric Khoo...

First up, a full-length trailer for teen party flick Project X. The R-rated comedy chronicles a party for the ages thrown by three high school seniors. Naturally, things get way out of control – culminating with the arrival of some guy with a flamethrower and the entire neighborhood on fire. The clip itself seems likely to be polarizing – but there’s certainly an audience for this kind of over-the-top material if films like Superbad and The Hangover are any indication. Project X...

‘Project X’ Trailer #2 Jumps Off the Roof Into Your Pool With a Flamethrower
Have you noticed that songs about getting completely, vomitously, blacked out drunk are getting popular now? From Taio Cruz talking about his hangover and drinking until he throws up, to Katy Perry’s “Last Friday Night” and Far East Movement and whatever Ke$ha is, it’s a sobering trend. The generation that’s in high school and college right now is trying to get on dialysis as fast as possible. It’s a noble goal, but it’s still no excuse for buying Natty Light. Meanwhile, at least one film is celebrating the act of celebrating. Project X‘s first trailer was manic and hurried, but this second trailer (via Coming Soon) effectively gives as much backstory as the movie can muster: three high school kids want to make an impact after floating through unknown by their classmates. A party ensues, and then the party goes viral. Check out the party for yourself: Why doesn’t...

This new Project X trailer is off the hook (plus a new poster)
It's Bamf.  It's totes cray-cray.  No, but seriously - this trailer is more or less f*cking crazy, with one quoted comment calling it "Superbad on crack."  Which is a pretty fair assessment in my mind, and makes me want to see this all the more. Project X is the Todd Philips (The Hangover, The Hangover Part II) produced "found-footage" movie about the most epic high school party you could ever dream up, if you were already a foul-mouthed...

New on DVD & Blu-ray, January 17: 'Ides of March,' 'Abduction'
DVD or Blu-ray? Redbox or Netflix? Streaming? Whatever your poison, here's the break down on all the week's new releases. Moviefone's Pick Of The Week "The Ides of March" What's It About? Ryan Gosling stars as an idealistic consultant that gets swept up in the presidential campaign of Governor Mike Morris (co-star and director George Clooney). Through their tough battle trying to secure the Democratic nomination in Ohio, Gosling gets a crash-course in how real politics work. See It Because: 'March' doesn't really tackle sweeping issues, but instead zeroes in on the much more personal conflict of making ethical compromises in the name of "the greater good." It's a tight, little drama about moral dillemas, featuring fantastic supporting players like Paul Giamatti, Marisa Tomei and Philip Seymour Hoffman. Plus, you know, Clooney and the Gos. Also Available on Red Box DVD and Blu-ray Also Available "Abduction" Taylor Lautner's abs make their action movie debut,...

This Week on DVD and Blu-ray: The Ides of March, Abduction, Redline
We're looking at mostly a repeat of last week in terms of DVD and Blu-ray releases, as there isn't a whole lot of interesting stuff hitting stores today outside of the week's biggest title, George Clooney's The Ides of March. While most critics can agree that one is definitely worth a watch, the other major releases received much less favourable reviews: Taylor Lautner thriller Abduction and Nick Swardson comedy Bucky Larson: Born to Be a Star are sitting at 4% and 0% respectively on Rotten Tomatoes. Also out this week is the apparently insane anime film Redline, Dirty Girl starring Juno Temple and Raoul Ruiz's Mysteries of Lisbon. New to Blu-ray this week we also have the Criterion release of Steven Soderbergh's Traffic, plus a handful of '80s classics including Good Morning Vietnam, Dead Poets Society, Project X and License to Drive starring the Haimster and Feldog. What...

'Ides of March' and Criterion's 'Traffic' and 'Belle de Jour' Lead the Week's New DVD and Blu-ray Releases
DVD Links: DVD News | Release Dates | New Dvds | Reviews | RSS Feed

The Ides of March Studios really need to widen their windows when it comes to films being released in theaters and then on DVD and Blu-ray. The fact Moneyball is already on DVD and Blu-ray and now The Ides of March lessens the films somewhat in my mind. There's no urgency. The film just left theaters a week ago and is now available to own at home. The rush to get content to people is cheapening the product and good films such as this are suffering for it.

I can just imagine the conversation, "Did you see The Ides of March?" "Which one is that?" "The one with Ryan Gosling and George Clooney." "The political one?" "Yeah." "No, didn't see it." "You should, it's even better the second time around." "I'll try and check it out, but I really...

‘Hansel & Gretel Witch Hunters’ Pushed Back To 2013
When the first official image from Paramount Pictures’ Hansel & Gretel Witch Hunters was unveiled, the plan was (reportedly) to release an official trailer for the R-Rated fairy tale spinoff about a week later.

Obviously, that didn’t happen and now we have a better idea of why: Paramount has decided to hold off on releasing the fantastical Gemma Arterton-Jeremy Renner teamup in Spring of 2012. Instead, the studio has selected to push the film back all the way to January 11th, 2013, for (official) reasons that have yet to be revealed.

Hansel & Gretel Witch Hunters was originally slated to open on March 2nd, 2012, where it would have faced off against the bubbly kid-friendly adaptation of Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax and the raunchy teen comedy/faux documentary Project X. Considering that Witch Hunters is a ...

New High Resolution Images From The Dark Knight Rises
Warner Bros. has released a few new images from director Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises that feature Tom Hardy as Bane, Batman and a new weapon, and Nolan with an IMAX camera. While some of the images were already featured in this month's Empire magazine, this is our first look at high resolution versions, and the image of Nolan with the IMAX camera is new. Like most of you, I'm beyond excited for the final Nolan Batman movie and ecstatic that between 40 and 50 minutes will be in IMAX. If you have the opportunity to see The Dark Knight Rises IMAX prologue before showings of Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, do it. It's absolutely worth the extra money and you'll wish the entire movie was being released in the large screen format. Hit the jump for the new images. The Dark Knight Rises gets released July 20 and stars Christian Bale,...

Robert De Niro and Paul Dano in Monsieur Flynn (2012)
Release Dates: ‘Being Flynn’, ‘Seeking a Friend for the End of the World’, ‘Moonrise Kingdom’
Robert De Niro and Paul Dano in Monsieur Flynn (2012)
[1] Even as I'm rushing to catch up on the 2011 films I've missed before the end of the year, I'm already looking forward to the crop of films that are due to open next year. Focus Features has just announced release dates for three of its upcoming releases I'm most curious about: Wes Anderson's Moonrise Kingdom, Paul Weitz's Being Flynn, and Lorene Scafaria's Seeking a Friend for the End of the World. Details after the jump. Variety [2] reports that Being Flynn will get a limited release March 2, the same day that The Lorax, Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters, and Project X are set to open wide. Based on Nick Flynn's acclaimed memoir Another Bullshit Night in Suck City, Being Flynn features Paul Dano as a young writer who reconnects with his absentee dad (Robert De Niro) when the latter shows up at the homeless shelter where the former works.

Check out more about the film at our trailer post, which will go up against The Lorax, Project X and Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters.

It stars Keira Knightley as Steve Carell‘s neighbor, who asks to help him find his childhood sweetheart when news breaks of an asteroid that’s about to collide with and destroy Earth. Lionsgate Entertainment has moved the theatrical release date of Safe from March 2nd to April 27th, 2012. Produced by Walter F. Parkes and Lawrence Lasker, "Project X" makes a political commentary on the ethics of animal research :

Teri is told that Virgil will be sent to a zoo. Instead, he is taken to an Air Force base to be used in a top-secret research project involving platforms designed to simulate the operation of aircraft.

"Meanwhile, 'Airman Jimmy Garrett' (Broderick), as punishment for misconduct involving a romantic interlude in an aircraft cockpit, is assigned to the same chimp project to which Virgil was sent. Jimmy begins to bond with Virgil and they become attached to one another.
