The George A. Romero / Stephen King horror anthology Creepshow is one of my all-time favorite movies – and so is the Michael Gornick-directed sequel Creepshow 2, which I’ve probably watched even more times than its predecessor. I love everything about Creepshow 2, so I was very glad to hear the news that Arrow Video is giving the film a 4K Uhd release in the US, the UK, and Canada. The release date is September 30th, and copies can be pre-ordered through a variety of links (check out the list on Arrow Video’s Facebook page), including This One.
Directed by Gornick from a screenplay by George A. Romero (based on stories written by Stephen King), Creepshow 2 has the following synopsis: Join our old friend, the rotting Creep himself, as he introduces this horror anthology which presents gruesome looks at three tales of horror: a hit-and-run driver in “The Hitchhiker...

For decades, fans of George A. Romero mourned the loss of the black and white, three and a half hour director’s cut of his film Martin. On an audio commentary, Romero once said something along the lines of the “greatest tragedy of his career” was that the film reels containing his Martin director’s cut went missing. Romero passed away in 2017, but then the director’s cut film reels were somehow finally been located in 2021 and went up for auction at Julien’s. Martin cinematographer Michael Gornick said this director’s cut “was always Romero’s preferred version. May it soon return safely to the custody of Richard Rubinstein and Braddock Associates for digital revitalization and distribution to the world.” Sadly, producer Richard Rubinstein made it clear that he did not want the 3-hour version of the movie making its way out into the world, for whatever reason. The...

Arrow has revealed its June slate, and it’s a characteristically eclectic mix of the brutal, the bizarre and the barely-seen. From grisly Korean thrillers and resurrected Japanese ghost tales to European horrors and cult cinema favourites, the curated streaming platform continues to expand its niche appeal with a line-up tailored to lovers of the extreme and unconventional.
Kicking off the month is Devils, a slick South Korean thriller featuring a body swap between a detective and the serial killer he has spent years chasing. It arrives alongside Body Parts, a five-part anthology soaked in ritualistic horror and dread, both streaming from 6 June. Together, they lead Arrow’s newly launched Killer K-Horror season, a collection that also includes the underseen zombie satire Zombie for Sale.
From 9 June, viewers can return to Takashi Miike’s gonzo Western Sukiyaki Western Django, the 2007 cult mash-up that blends Leone-styled shootouts with operatic samurai drama.

For four seasons, jack of all trades Greg Nicotero (writer, director, producer, FX artist, etc.) teamed up with the Shudder streaming service to bring us the anthology series Creepshow, a continuation of the franchise George A. Romero and Stephen King began with the 1982 film Creepshow and the 1987 sequel Creepshow 2. We’re waiting to hear if there’s going to be a season 5 of that series – but while we wait, AMC Networks has announced that Nicotero and Shudder are currently working on an unscripted horror competition series called Guts & Glory.
A press release lets us know that “the six-episode series flips the script on the traditional competition show – thrusting players into an immersive horror experience full of unexpected challenges. Guts & Glory, which features an integrated sponsorship by Hyundai, is set to debut later this year on both Shudder and AMC+ (U.S. and Canada).“

Shaun of the Dead director Edgar Wright has an intriguing new project. He’s finishing up another Stephen King adaptation for fans of cinematic versions of the horror icon’s prose.
The massive success of the first It remake increased interest in rebooting King's past works, including the ones that didn’t do so well. So far, no one appears interested in developing a new version of Maximum Overdrive, but this November, we'll see the second big-screen version of 1987's The Running Man.
The Running Man originally debuted as a novella King wrote under his “Richard Bachman” pen name. The dark dystopian work about a game show where contestants face a life-or-death chase with hunters on their heels had much potential. That’s not how things played out in theaters. While King’s books continued to sell high volumes, films like Firestarter and Creepshow 2, didn’t set critics or fans on fire.

George A. Romero's 1982 anthology horror flick "Creepshow," scripted by Stephen King, was an homage to the roundly gruesome EC horror comics of the 1950s. EC was overseen by William M. Gaines, and he published titles like "Tales from the Crypt," "The Vault of Horror," and "Shock SuspenStories." They also oversaw sci-fi books like "Weird Science," war comics like "Two-Fisted Tales," and parody comics like "Mad." For those who think media of the 1950s was square and tame, reading a single issue of "Tales from the Crypt" will prove how sick and depraved writers could get.
Stephen King was a reader of EC Comics, and "Creepshow" was his attempt to bring their twisted, violent sensibilities into the Reagan era. Although there had been "Tales from the Crypt" movies prior to "Creepshow," the 1982 film was the biggest yet, boasting an all-star cast and salacious, energetic direction. It made $21 million on an $8 million budget,...

When it comes to modern horror, few creators compare to Stephen King. As one of the most frequently-adapted authors in history, his popular stories have been transformed into some of the most successful genre films out there. However, they can't all be masterpieces, and many of them don't live up to their strong starts. This list contains ten of the best Stephen King films that just couldn't stick the landing.
Each of these famous adaptations, sequels, prequels, and remakes has something to offer, but their conclusions hold them back from greatness. Sometimes it's the filmmaker's mistake, some endings have just aged poorly, and sometimes fans must accept that even Stephen King is fallible. This list of flawed but fascinating films helps illuminate what makes a great story, and how easy it is to fall short of perfection — even for the master.

Presented by Neon’s The Monkey, Bloody Disgusting is celebrating this Friday’s release of Osgood Perkins’ highly anticipated horror with Stephen King Week. Yesterday, Luiz H. C. catalogues his cursed objects. and today, Rachel Reeves dusts off other adaptations from King’s Skeleton Crew.
For some, it was Michael J. Fox holding a copy of Skeleton Crew for his 1988 Read campaign poster that first inspired a read of the Stephen King short story collection. For others, the killer, record-breaking trailer for Neon’s new film The Monkey, written and directed by Osgood Perkins, instigated fingers to flip through pages. Whatever the inciting incident that introduced one to Skeleton Crew, the fact remains that it is a certified Constant Reader classic and a treasure trove of cinematic, eerie, and unsettling tales.
Since the initial release of Skeleton Crew in 1985, several stories have found their way to the screen, with varying degrees of success.

In the ’70s and early ’80s, perhaps the only thing that Stephen King liked more than a child with a psychic gift/curse was an inanimate object that becomes possessed by evil. A car, HGVs and even a laundry press lurched into life to wreak destruction, and all of these mechanical menaces made their inexorable way from page to screen, directed by John Carpenter (Christine), King himself and Tobe Hooper (The Mangler).
The Monkey, first published by Gallery magazine in 1980 and revised to feature in King’s 1985 collection of short stories Skeleton Crew, located genuine revulsion and terror in a wind-up toy. Eyes shining with “idiot glee” and lips pulled back in a “carnivorous” grin, the hirsute curio shuddered to life to clap its cymbals… and Death danced. The monkey was, in short, evil incarnate.
The main sustenance is course after course of ketchup-covered set-pieces...
So who better to adapt...

Stephen King's Misery has become a free streaming hit after dropping on Tubi a few weeks ago. Users of the free streaming service are finding the 1990 adaptation to be a worthy psychological horror thriller that just has to be revisited. At the time of writing, Misery sits in third spot on Tubi's list of most popular films. Other titles currently vying for attention on the platform include the Wesley Snipes thriller, Murder at 1600, Patrick Swayze's 80s hit, Road House, and the demonically delightful Megan Fox horror movie, Jennifer's Body.
Written by American playwright William Goldman, and directed by Rob Reiner, Misery is based on the 1987 novel of the same name by Stephen King. The story follows a writer named Paul Sheldon, who's returning from his retreat where he wrote the end of a successful series of romantic novels centering around the fictional character Misery Chastain. We all know that those little cymbal-crashing toy monkeys are some of the creepiest items to ever hit the market. They just look evil, so it’s no wonder that Stephen King was drawn to them as a source of terror. Now, Osgood Perkins is hoping to do justice to King and the source, with The Monkey arriving in theaters next month. As it turns out, the movie screened just this week. So, did Perkins deliver on the simian scares?
Fortunately for fans of both Stephen King and Osgood Perkins, it looks like The Monkey is just the level of horror fun that will be a crowd pleaser, with those that caught the screening praising it for combining blood and laughs. Check out some of the first reactions to The Monkey below:

Neon has finally released the much-hyped red-band trailer for The Monkey, the latest horror film from Longlegs director Osgood Perkins and producer James Wan. As promised in the list of notes the studio received from the MPA, the new trailer is bloody, brutal, and absolutely bonkers – and yes, there is a death by bowling ball.
Initially planned for release last week, the new red-band trailer for The Monkey has arrived, better late (and bloodier) than never. In recent interviews, Perkins has emphasized that The Monkey is different from his previous films in that the tone is more comedic, describing it as a "morbidly surreal horror comedy that's also heartwarming and redemptive and stars a bona-fide movie hunk." All of which is evident in the new trailer, which has a distinctly dark, absurdist, and violent sense of humor. As for the heartwarming angle? Tbd.

When it comes to Thanksgiving Horror, the 1980s slasher movie Blood Rage has emerged as the reigning holiday champion for many fans. To be fair, the pickings are slim – Eli Roth’s Thanksgiving is the most recent example – but this slasher is cut from the same charming cloth as the likes of Pieces and The Mutilator.
In other words, it delivers on both wackiness and gore.
Originally filmed in 1983, Blood Rage (also known as Slasher) didn’t get released until 1987, and that was a heavily edited version under the title Nightmare at Shadow Woods. It wasn’t until the film hit VHS that the gore was restored, though it still remained a rather obscure title until Arrow Video’s Blu-ray release pushed the slasher into the spotlight back in 2015.

Stephen King isn’t just an author by this point: He’s an institution, a legacy of classic horror stories that capture our imaginations, fuel our nightmares, and speak — when he’s at his best — to our shared experiences as flawed, emotional beings. The best King stories scare so many of us that we all feel connected, and even the worst are usually pretty fun.
King’s books and short stories quickly became hit movies, many of them celebrated in their time, and some flopped so hard that hardly anybody remembers them. Cataloguing every adaptation might be a fool’s errand, so we made some tough choices and decided to focus only on his theatrical releases.
And even then, there are so many King adaptations that it gets tricky. The sequels to King’s work rarely have anything to do with the source material, so they’re all disqualified. We...

In 1982, horror legends Stephen King and George A. Romero joined forces to bring audiences the ultimate experience in being scared. The result was "Creepshow," a gross, funny, spooky horror anthology film inspired by the old EC horror comics that Stephen King grew up reading. With a cast of familiar faces, "Creepshow" told several stories about ghosts, ghouls, monsters, and bugs. It was an all-around fun time at the movies. It was also made fairly cheaply (the budget was $8 million), which helped it turn a profit. When something like that happens, a sequel can't be far behind. Sure enough, by 1987, "Creepshow 2" had arrived.
But this sequel was a little different from the original film. For one thing, it wasn't as good. For another, while Romero and King were involved with the sequel, their contributions were different from the first film. Romero directed the original "Creepshow," but this sequel was helmed by Michael Gornick,...

George A. Romero and Stephen King: a match made in horror movie heaven. It was probably inevitable that Stephen King would break into the movies, and the master of horror finally had his first screenplay produced in the form of Romero's "Creepshow," one of the best horror anthology movies ever made. King had penned scripts before (for instance: he wrote a draft of the screenplay for "The Shining" that Stanley Kubrick rejected), but "Creepshow" was the first original King script to make it to the screen. King and Romero originally met when Romero was being courted to direct the TV adaptation of King's vampire novel "Salem's Lot," and while Romero ultimately didn't direct the miniseries (those duties ultimately fell to "Texas Chain Saw Massacre" filmmaker Tobe Hooper), he and King became friends. Eventually, the two decided to make a movie together, with King penning the script and Romero directing.

We're officially knee-deep in summer! The 4th of July just happened, and I'm sure some of you are gearing up for a summer vacation. Whether you're staying at home chilling in a tiny inflatable pool or heading out and hitting the beach, summer is a great time to just take it easy and disassociate from your normal, every-day life. It's also a great season for horror. I know there's a certain subset of folks — let's call them "normal people" — who primarily associate horror with autumn and Halloween. In fact, I've met more than one person in my life who has claimed they only watch horror movies around Halloween time. And while I'm not one to judge, I'll say this: why limit yourself? Horror can be celebrated year-round! Especially when there are a whole slew of scary movies set during the summer season. And that's where this month's horror streaming column comes in.

In the "Star Trek: Voyager" episode "Tuvix", a transporter accident fused the stern, logical Vulcan Tuvok (Tim Russ) with the jolly hobbit-like chef Neelix (Ethan Phillips) into a single being. This new being, who says he's named Tuvix (Tom Wright) possesses memories and personality traits from both Tuvok and Neelix, which is a matter of great consternation from Captain Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) and the crew of the Voyager. Tuvix soon finds that he likes his new amalgam personality, finding happiness and agency as an individual.
Soon, however, the Voyager engineers find a way to reverse the effects of the transporter accident and separate Tuvix back into his two constituent beings. Tuvix objects, of course. To do so would mean to murder him. Surely a newly created person has rights just as much as any other member of the crew, and Tuvix would like them to be protected. Notoriously among Trekkies,...

In the 1980s, author Stephen King was at the peak of his craft. Not only was that the decade he began his magnum opus, The Dark Tower, but he also released seminal works like Pet Sematary, It, and Misery. As his name grew in recognition, hungry Hollywood studios optioned King's stories, looking for their next big horror success. As a result, Stephen King's name appeared in nearly a dozen films over the decade.
The incredible achievement of Brian De Palma's 1976 adaptation of Stephen King's first novel, Carrie, opened the floodgates for further adaptations of his work, and all things considered, the overall quality of those films released in the 80s has yet to be matched by any other decade.

Buyers at the Cannes Market were going bananas for Stephen King adaptation The Monkey, with the bidding war eventually being won out by Neon. While no financial details were made available, Deadline reports that the studio is aiming for a 2025 release.
Filming on The Monkey – which was first published in 1980 and subsequently reprinted in the essential King short story collection Skeleton Crew – wrapped in March. Directed by Oz Perkins (son of Anthony and whose Longlegs is also being distributed by Neon), the movie is notably produced by James Wan and features a cast of Theo James, Elijah Wood, Tatiana Maslany, Sarah Levy, Rohan Campbell, Christian Convery, and Colin O’Brien.
For those unfamiliar with Stephen King’s short story, The Monkey has the following plot: “When twin brothers Hal and Bill discover their father’s old monkey toy in the attic, a series of gruesome deaths starts occurring all around them.

We all love a "fun" horror movie, right? I'm talking about horror that feels like the cinematic equivalent of a roller coaster — fast, exhilarating, scary, but ultimately harmless. You buy the ticket and take the ride. But one of the things I love about the horror genre is that it's so damn flexible. On one hand, you can have fun horror movies like I just mentioned. And then there's the complete opposite: horror movies that make you squirm. Horror movies designed to make your skin crawl. Bugs, monsters, blood, body horror — the type of stuff that makes you feel like you need to take a shower after watching it. Those are the types of horror movies we're highlighting here — gnarly stuff, gross stuff, stuff that's going to make you feel more than a little icky. Be warned: it's about to get disgusting up in here.

All the way back in 1982, Stephen King and the late great George A. Romero collaborated on the first Creepshow film, an anthology-based homage to the horror comic books of the 1950s. In the intervening years it has become a cult classic, a film remembered fondly by most. It is, even all these years later, still a wonderful movie. 2019 saw Creepshow return, but this time as an anthology television show that aired on the horror streaming platform, Shudder; and when that was announced I was immediately excited, being a big fan of Creepshow and Creepshow 2 for that matter (but the less said about aert three the better). Premiering on September 26th, the first season of Creepshow featured six episodes, with two separate tales to be found in each of those episodes.

Its hard for a sequel to be better than the original – no, hey! Don’t close the article and please hold all hate in the comments until the end. I’m not saying Creepshow 2 (watch it Here) is better than the first movie, that’s just silly. Ok, so it’s hard for sequels to eclipse their previous iteration. Godfather II is always the answer to that but there are other things that you can prefer. Some people prefer the breakneck action of Aliens to the slasher in space of Alien. Others may enjoy Friday the 13th Part 2 with its higher violence (although it does have the same body count) and introduction to Jason to part 1’s mommy revenge story.

Some of the best Stephen King movie and TV adaptations have been lost amidst the long list of books that have made to the big and small screens, but they’re well worth revisiting. Stephen King’s prolific catalog of gripping novels and short stories has seen the author accumulate over 300 screen adaptation credits. Many have become icons of the horror genre.
However, not all King adaptations and shows see the same level of recognition. In fact, some of the plots are simply too absurd to be accepted by mainstream moviegoing audiences. In other cases, King’s stories, which often rely heavily on inner monologue for characterization, fail to translate to visual mediums such as film and TV. Even so, such projects often have their bright spots regardless. It’s even possible for a King story to work perfectly as a TV show or movie but, due to timing or other factors,...

Although far from the first horror anthology, Creepshow quickly established itself as the quintessential one. After several stalled attempts to work together, George A. Romero and Stephen King — two undisputed masters in their respective fields, each in their prime — finally collaborated in 1982. With both creators having grown up on EC horror comics of the 1950s like Tales from the Crypt, The Vault of Horror, and The Haunt of Fear, it made sense that an homage to those works would bring the two titans of terror together.
Creepshow packs five tales (three originals and two adapted from existing King short stories) plus a wraparound that bookends the film in two hours flat. The Halloween-set framing story finds a disparaging father lambasting his son for reading horror comics before throwing away the latest issue of Creepshow. Beckoned by the silent host known as The Creep, the tales within the discarded comic serve as the anthology’s segments.

After spending two years as the Senior Vice President of Business & Legal Affairs at Blumhouse Productions and producing such films as Country Gold, Vengeance, The Voyeurs, and the poorly received 2019 version of Black Christmas, Zac Locke has now made his feature writing and directing debut with the supernatural slasher #Float, and Deadline reports that XYZ Films has acquired the North American distribution rights to the film. They’re planning to release it on December 8th.
#Float follows the young, beautiful, and full-of-life vlogger Kali and her pals, who are heading to the river for their annual lazy river float, the first one since their friend Chuy overdosed and drowned a year earlier. But their partying suddenly takes a dark turn when a mysterious force plunges them into a life-and-death struggle, forcing them to face their own fears as they turn on each other – and proceed to die one by one.

With October comes Halloween and with Halloween comes watching lots and lots of horror and horror-adjacent movies. These iconic movies usually have many spinoffs and, for better and for worse, sometimes that means video game tie-ins, too. Over the decades, we’ve seen the events of Halloween both adapted into being chased by Michael Myers via Atari graphics but also being chased by Michael Myers in the far superior Dead by Daylight.

Chatting with /Film's Max Evry over a recently released special edition Blu-ray of the 2015 documentary "Smoke and Mirrors: The Story of Tom Savini," the conversation turned, naturally, to horror and one of Savini's most well-known makeup fx contributions, George Romero's 1982 horror anthology "Creepshow." The classic October viewing staple hits its 40th anniversary this year and while many anthologies have followed in the EC Comics-inspired footsteps since, few have the lasting power of the Stephen King-penned original.
Filled with Tom Savini-engineered special effects for each of its five segments, "Creepshow" thrilled audiences with headless matriarchs, a creature-in-a-crate, a moss man, waterlogged ghouls, and cockroach kills. The fans love it, but Savini credits his longtime friend and the film's director George A. Romero for its legendary status. Savini tells Evry:

The franchise director George A. Romero and writer Stephen King started with the 1982 classic Creepshow (watch it Here) sat dormant for a long time after the 1987 release of Creepshow 2 (watch it Here). There was a sequel we don’t talk about in 2006, but recently the property was successfully revived with the Shudder TV series, which has brought about new Creepshow books and comics – and now a video game. For the newest installment of Phantom Limbs, we’ll be cracking open the pages of Creepshow 2 and poring over “Pinfall”, an unproduced segment of that 1987 horror anthology. Adapted from an unpublished Stephen King story by George A. Romero, “Pinfall” was originally slated as the second story to unfold in the sequel before it was ultimately axed in favor of “The Hitch-hiker”, the third tale in the finished film.
Joining us for this peek into an unmade Romero is Benjamin T. Rubin, the Horror Studies Collection Coordinator for the University of Pittsburgh Library System. Mr. Rubin was kind enough to take time away from overseeing the library’s George A. Romero Archival Collection (https://romero.library.pitt.edu/) to chat about the origins of “Pinfall” and its ultimate, tragic fate as the King/Romero collaboration that never was.

A new episode of the JoBlo Horror Originals video series Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? has just been released, and for this one we’re digging into the making of one of my all-time favorite movies: the 1987 horror anthology Creepshow 2 (watch it Here)! To find out what went into the making of Creepshow 2, check out the video embedded above.
Directed by Michael Gornick from a screenplay by George A. Romero (based on stories written by Stephen King), Creepshow 2 has the following synopsis:
Join our old friend, the rotting Creep himself, as he introduces this horror anthology which presents gruesome looks at three tales of horror: a hit-and-run driver in “The Hitchhiker”, a wooden Indian in “Ol’ Chief Wooden Head”, and four friends whose vacation on a secluded lake turns into a nightmare in “The Raft”. Creepshow 2 is a deliciously wicked roller coaster ride that will...

The second season finale of ‘American Horror Stories’ gets pulled away by the tide and struggles to find its way back to a compelling conclusion.
“She needs to find her life again and get back to normal. We all do.”
There are some exceptional horror films that find fear within the unknown depths of the sea, whether it’s overt monster movies like Deep Rising, Underwater, or “The Raft” segment from Creepshow 2, or terrifying tales that are adjacent to the water like The Shallows. American Horror Story has more or less left underwater tales of woe alone even though a story that’s centered on the Loch Ness Monster or other aquatic Cryptids seems completely in line with the series’ agenda. “Lake,” the season finale of American Horror Stories’ second season, avoids a modern monster myth in favor of a somber meditation on grief and guilt. The inciting incident...

Brilliant Pictures have unveiled first look images from upcoming shark thriller “Deep Fear” starring “Gossip Girl’s” Ed Westwick and “House of Gucci’s” Madalina Ghenea. The company is launching worldwide sales in Cannes.
In the first images, Ghenea is pictured in her diving gear underwater (above) and huddled with Wetwick on the top deck of a ship (below). Brilliant Pictures also released a solo image of Westwick on a boat pointing a gun.
In “Deep Fear,” Ghenea plays Naomi in the film, a yachtswoman embarking on a solo trip in the Caribbean. Her last stop is Grenada, where she plans to rendezvous with her boyfriend Jackson (Westwick), until a storm forces her off course and into the paths of drug traffickers. When Naomi is forced to dive to retrieve their drugs from a shipwrecked vessel she comes face to face with a bevvy of vicious sharks. With only her wits to fend them off,...
