In 2019, the documentary of 80s horror In Search of Darkness became an instant hit with horror fans. Now, a beautiful coffee table style companion book is available and is a must-own for all fans of one of horror’s greatest eras. The book is a walk down the horror aisle of the best mom and pop video store in the heyday of VHS, featuring full color photos, poster art, insightful essays and more. More than just a nostalgic throwback, In Search of Darkness is the kind of book I wish I’d had back in my years as a burgeoning horror fan but is also satisfying for the film fanatic I have become in the years since.
The format is beautifully and simply laid out, with at least a dozen (usually more) movies from each year of the decade presented in order of release accompanied by informative and insightful essays...

Whereas splatter movies wield gore and carnage like a weapon to evoke a visceral response, splatter comedies push the onscreen violence and gore into outlandish territory for the sake of a hearty laugh. Peter Jackson and Sam Raimi, for example, began their filmmaking careers defining the modern splatter comedy with their early works, pushing the boundaries of taste, horror, and humor through cartoonish bloodletting.
This week brings the arrival of a new splatter-comedy, Destroy All Neighbors, presenting the perfect excuse to laugh your way through the excess entrails and arterial spray the niche subgenre has to offer. These five splatter comedies vary in style and tone, but all seek to tickle your funny bone through humor, fun, and a whole lot of guts.
Here’s where you can stream them this week.

Fantastic Fest, the genre film festival that takes place in Austin, Texas every fall, has unveiled its 2023 lineup, which includes a new take on Troma’s classic “The Toxic Avenger” from Blumhouse, Prime Video’s time travel slasher “Totally Killer,” episodes of Mike Flanagan’s new Netflix series “The Fall of the House of Usher” and the latest film by South Korean auteur Kim Jee-woon (“Cobweb”) as the festival’s reputation for bringing film fans the most adventurous offerings remains unchallenged.
The opening night movie for the festival is the new “Toxic Avenger,” produced by Legendary alongside Troma, and written and directed by the great Macon Blair (recently seen as Oppenheimer’s put-upon lawyer in Christopher Nolan’s film). Peter Dinklage plays the title character with a supporting cast that includes Jacob Tremblay, Taylour Paige, Elijah Wood and Kevin Bacon.

The Bloody Disgusting-powered Screambox is home to a variety of unique horror content, from originals and exclusives to cult classics and documentaries. With such a rapidly-growing library, there are many hidden gems waiting to be discovered.
Here are five recommendations you can stream on Screambox right now.
Pool Party Massacre
Summer is well underway, and if you’ve already exhausted all the seasonal classics, Pool Party Massacre can fill the void with a comedic send-up to ’80s slashers like Slumber Party Massacre and Sleepaway Camp (both also on Screambox). Written and directed by Drew Marvick, the 2017 low-budget indie embraces the era with 80 minutes of over-the-top characters, campy performances, and cheesy practical effects.
The titular party isn’t very festive; it’s more like a small gathering of vapid, Real Housewives rejects that barely tolerate one another while lounging by the pool. One by one, a character excuses themselves — including, in one instance,...

Horror films existed since the birth of moving pictures but didn't become a widely-recognized genre until the classic era of Universal Monsters launched Dracula and Frankenstein. Because these monsters were so popular and, more importantly, based mostly on public domain properties, there have been many remakes, reboots, and parodies over the years.
They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, but monster movie ripoffs are usually geared toward making a quick buck. That's not to say they are all bad, but most remakes and imitators never come close to the originals. Reinterpreting classics, however, can lead to far more entertaining results as some of the most bizarre spins on the Universal Monsters have proven.

Welcome to Camp Nightmare, where we're about to embark on a wild adventure through the wacky world of campy horror movies. The moon casts an eerie glow on the haunted cabins, and the rustling leaves whisper tales of horror. Gather 'round the campfire, fellow thrill-seekers, as we invite you into the twisted world of camp. Not summer camp, but camp camp. These delectably cheesy flicks have achieved legendary status, eliciting uproarious laughter and spine-tingling cringes in equal measure.
Before we delve into the world of campy horror movies though, we should probably answer the question: What is camp? It's the B-movie that's loud and proud. The intentionally over-the-top horror movie that winks at the audience, saying, “Sure, we might be cheesy and predictable, but isn't that part of the bloody charm?” Camp is a whirlwind of blood-splattered delight, where rubber monsters and questionable dialogue collide in a gleeful explosion of entertainment.

All You Can Eat opens with a shot of the sign for Planet Burrito, a Taco Bell type Mexican restaurant whose mascot is a three-eyed alien with a taste for human limbs that looks as if it was designed by Ed “Big Daddy” Roth. It’s a fitting image as writer/director Kieran Reed delivers a thirteen-minute trip down horror’s memory lane with an emphasis on the films of the 80s.
Nola, one of the restaurant’s staff is telling her coworker Gurdip (Matt O’Toole) about an odd occurrence she had as she waited for the restaurant’s owner Kip Meatsock (Andy Muskett) to finish whatever he was doing with some Petri dishes.

One of the great things about horror is the variety, which can go hand and hand with longevity; as fans we never get tired of the genre because there are so many rabbit holes to dive down, to drown in weird worlds of ghosts, dismemberment, and monsters. And even when a sub-genre isn’t in fashion, it’s nice to see a touch of the old in the current; case in point: The Being (1983), writer/director Jackie Kong’s (Blood Diner) feature debut and a breezy update of ‘50s sci-fi shenanigans.
Released by Best Film & Video in November, The Being was originally shot in 1980 under the title Easter Sunday; no takers were to be found until ‘83. The film did not light up the box office, nor did it receive any lofty notices. It did, however, signal the arrival of a fun new voice on the horror scene in the guise of Kong.

Little Monsters and Shivers are next in Lionsgate's Vestron Video Collector's Series. Michael Felsher made the announcement today, noting that both releases will be out in September with a wealth of bonus material. The Collector's Series started back in 2016 with Chopping Mall and Blood Diner, before going through to 2018 and then disappearing again, leaving fans out in the cold. Now we're getting two awesome movies and the return of the mighty Vestron Video Collector's Series. And the best part is, we can expect more.
Little Monsters is a cult classic from 1989 starring Fred Savage and Howie Mandel. The story focuses on a boy named Brian who befriends a real-life monster under his bed. Brian discovers a secret world of monsters who sneak into children's bedrooms at night to pull pranks on them. Little Monsters is truly a lost classic and deserves to be seen by a lot more people.

When it comes to the pantheon of great Wtf horror movies of the 1980s, Howard R. Cohen’s Saturday the 14th Strikes Back ranks right up with classic gems like Troll 2, Blood Diner or Spookies, and is probably a film that most genre fans haven’t heard about, let alone have watched either. And yeah, I’m not going to try and sell you on ST14SB as this grand masterpiece – it isn’t – but it is definitely something I would say fans of oddball cinema should experience at least once in their lifetime. It may have more than a few rough edges, but there’s so much genre love coursing through Saturday the 14th Strikes Back’s schlocky veins, that I can’t help but admire its total disregard for cinematic rules, and just delivering up a full-blown monster mash that is a ridiculous amount of nonsensical fun.

By now I’m sure you know the formula for this column. I introduce one of our beloved horror icons as a means to steer you toward one of their lesser-known works. Nothing too complicated, but I’ve found it works. This time around, however, I worry that my usual spiel will bury the lede, as I’ve made a profound discovery in the made-for-tv horror fairy tale Snow White: A Tale of Terror, featuring Sigourney Weaver. This movie, ladies and gentlemen, is the silliest horror movie ever made.
I know what you’re thinking: But Bryan, how could you make such a claim in a world where movies like Sleepaway Camp II, Blood Diner, or any variety of wacky ’80s slasher movies exist? You raise a fair point, good reader, but the difference is that they were actively trying to be silly while Snow White: A Tale of Terror...

If you’ve been keeping any eye on the BBFC website this news won’t come as that much of a surprise… However, Lionsgate UK have officially announced today the launch of the Vestron Collectors Series line of Blu-rays here in the UK! Yes, no longer will you have to fork over £30-40 to import the well-received Vestron Blus, instead you can get them right here in Blighty. The catch? It looks, at least from this announcement, that we won’t be getting All the Vestron titles – after all, there’s no Waxwork 2 included on the UK Blu.

Often in filmmaking, the movie that was conceived during the screenwriting process ends up being a completely different movie upon release. Let me see your heart!
Let me break something down real quick. I justifiably catch a reputation as being someone who likes to like things. And that’s true. Whenever I have time to share movie talk with folks, I want to talk about the things I love. Because, for me, it’s just too darn easy to fall down a rabbit hole of negativity. When I stumble across something that thrills me, I want to share it. Even still, sometimes I’m a bit abashed when it comes to how enthusiastic I tend to be about things. This is especially true when I find a great new-to-me trash-cinema film. Over Easter Weekend, I got stuck on a “Blood” film kick. Don’t judge me. I like topical themes. Any road, that’s when I ran into Blood Diner. I had no idea this movie existed until I saw the poster flipping through movies on Shudder. When...

Not all C.H.U.D. are created equal.
Within weeks of Arrow Video’s special edition Blu-ray of the original C.H.U.D.—still the best movie ever made about New York’s homeless being transformed by toxic waste into cannibalistic humanoid underground dwellers—Lionsgate’s new(ish) Vestron Video Collector’s Series adds its 1989 sequel, C.H.U.D. The supportive horror fan in me is happy for the film’s fans, who finally get to put a high-def version of a movie they adore on their shelves. The movie lover in me would be perfectly okay not seeing it again.

Lionsgate's superb Vestron Video Collector's Series continues the upcoming January 2017 with classics from Ken Russell and Bob Balaban. We've previously reviewed their introductory titles, Blood Diner and Chopping Mall, and if those releases are anything like these new ones, we are in for a treat. January will see the Blu-ray premiere of Ken Russell's bonkers folk horror film Lair of the White Worm starring Hugh Grant, Amanda Donohoe, and Catherine Oxenberg. This film was a VHS and cable staple throughout the '90s and along with Altered States was one of Russell's most culturally ubiquitous films in the Us thanks to Vestron Video. We will also see the Blu-ray premiere of Bob Balaban's classic cannibal spoof, Parents. This film features Randy Quaid and Mary Beth...

No one would accuse New Yorkers of being starved for options when it comes to going to the movies. From cultural institutions like Film Society of Lincoln Center, BAMcinématek, Museum of the Moving Image, and Film Forum, to indie theatres IFC Center and Nitehawk, to bar/theatre hybrids Videology and Syndicated, to the many, many multiplexes, you’ll never hurt for options when it comes to finding a great film to see on the big screen on any given weekend. Exciting newcomers like Metrograph proved it is still possible to make an impact with even the most jaded NYC cinephiles, while the fate of upscale theatres like iPic is yet to be seen.
But despite this bounty of riches, things are about to get even more exciting because after five years and a few false starts, the Alamo Drafthouse is finally opening in Downtown Brooklyn. (The official opening date is Friday,...

A goofy horror comedy that boasts some weirdly insane set pieces and a lot of lighthearted fun, Blood Diner is the vegetarian cannibalism movie I never knew I needed (but definitely do now). It’s a film I’ve heard about for a long time, but just never found the opportunity to rent, which is why I’m happy to see it resurrected in HD by Lionsgate as part of their new Vestron Video Collector’s Series. It may not be an experience for everyone, but considering my absolute love for balls-out, unabashedly weird horror comedies from the 1980s (like The Stuff or Saturday the 14th Strikes Back), Blood Diner is the perfect Blood Feast sequel we never officially got, and I had a blast with it.

Yesterday, The A.V. Club reported on the return of Vestron Video with a newly re-mastered Blu-Ray release of Blood Diner. Now Lionsgate has heaped more good news upon VHS collectors who want to keep their prized copies in pristine condition, announcing a slew of titles from the Vestron catalog of “special interest videos, independent films, B-movies and TV movies.”
Lionsgate confirmed that in addition to the Barbara Crampton killer robot flick Chopping Mall (which does not actually feature any chopping) the company will be unleashing re-mastered editions of Brian Yuzna’s kinky Return Of The Living Dead 3, as well as the campy C.H.U.D II: Bud The Chud.
Also of interest is the Waxwork/Waxwork II: Lost In Time double feature, which will be available for a limited time. Artisan previously released a bare-bones DVD set that included Anthony Hickox’s underrated original—a wild tribute...

Growing up in the heyday of VHS, there were certain logos—sometimes referred to as “nightmare logos”—that induced a Pavlovian sense of dread thanks to their appearance on so many scary VHS tapes kids pored over in the ’80s. When the Media, New World Pictures, or Vestron Video logo appeared on screen, you knew you were probably going to have some bad dreams that night. (The Clg Motion Graphics Museum ranks the Vestron logo’s scare factor as low to medium.)
Vestron Video—initially formed by Time-Life video in 1981 in order to release “special interest videos as well as independent films, B-movies, and TV movies”—is back, thanks to Lionsgate’s Vestron Video Collectors series. Since any New York cinephile has a nearly suffocating wealth of theatrical options, we figured it’d be best to compile some of the more worthwhile repertory showings into one handy list. Displayed below are a few of the city’s most reliable theaters and links to screenings of their weekend offerings — films you’re not likely to see in a theater again anytime soon, and many of which are, also, on 35mm. If you have a chance to attend any of these, we’re of the mind that it’s time extremely well-spent.

By today’s standards, a good deal of what we would consider classics would seem corny to this generation. Movies like Hobgoblins and Creature may have been great fun in their day, but don’t necessarily hold up to the scrutiny of today’s criteria for quality entertainment. Fortunately, for every Troll there was a Scanners. For every Blood Diner, a C.H.U.D.
Undoubtedly, a hallmark of 1980’s film is the rogues gallery of iconic villains which spawned from the era. Michael Myers may technically be a product of the 70’s, but his contemporaries Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees were hatched during the decade of decadence. Freddy/Jason/Michael are the hat trick of horror, well-known by all, and for that reason will be respectfully omitted from this list.
One need only scratch the surface to find some other truly creepy fiends that transcended their genres…

Bon appétit! It is the chef, or the cook if you will, that makes all the magic happen with the food we eat. The right chef can take your ordinary meal and make it extraordinary… or is that Hamburger Helper? Anyway, here are the Top 9 Sinister Chefs in horror.

Director Jackie Kong, whose low-budget horror flicks Blood Diner and The Being have become cult favorites among fans of '80s horror, has stepped behind the camera once again for the romantic horror feature CoExistence – which also marks the screen reunion of Blade Runner stars Rutger Hauer and Daryl Hannah. Kong dropped off the horror map for many years to work as an activist for the non-profit group Asian-American Media Development (Aamd), but has finally returned to filmmaking with this vampiric twist on Romeo & Juliet set in California's Sonoma wine country. The modern-day retelling involves a bitter rivalry between two wine-making clans intensified by a forbidden love affair between teens from both families (played by Nick Krause & Bella Thorne), which also threatens to expose a shocking family secret. Despite the teen/vampire romance element, Kong is quick to downplay comparisons to the Twilight franchise. “I’m not just catering to teenagers,...

Melting flesh, gruesome alien mutations, post-apocalyptic machinery, pus-shooting creatures, tits, automatic weaponry and a decidedly Nsfw teaser trailer. Occasionally things come across our desks here at Dread Central that make us to grin ear to ear.

This is the double feature sure to make you a hungry horror fans. For It Came From 1980 X this week we are tackling two very kitchen related horror films from the 1980′s. First is Gore-met, Zombie Chef from Hell. Second we have Microwave Massacre. While you’ve no doubt seen the covers of this VHS classics any number of times, maybe even been repulsed by them, there’s no guarantee that you’ve actually seen and “enjoyed” them. Enjoyed is in quotations because quite honestly you can’t say that you like either one of these films based on their merit. They’re as close to the horror equivalent of Mystery Science Theater 3000 fodder as you’ll find in the genre. The promise of the gross out and poor production value is why you’d seek out these classics. I’m fairly certain it is not possible to get laid while watching these movies.

It's common knowledge that the slashers that came in during the late eighties weren't high on intelligence. Don't believe me? Well, if any of you have seen films like Slaughter High, Blood Diner, Chopping Mall, Killer Workout, The Last Slumber Party, Nail Gun Massacre, etc., then you'll know why.
