Avatar: The Last Airbenderand The Legend of Korraare famous for their complex antagonists. Zuko is held up as the gold-standard for redemption arcs in media, while Azula is easy to sympathize with in spite of how wicked she is, due to her age and the abuse she's suffered. However, the franchise more often embraces the reality that most villains don't have good in them deep down.
Often aiming for realism, the Avatar: The Last Airbender franchise contains some of the most evil villains in any animated series. Aang and Korra's enemies have committed genocide, attempted genocide, enslavement, torture, child abuse, and so much more. Regardless of what they may claim their intentions to be, none of these cruel figures are forgivable in the slightest.

Pierce Brosnan's role in The Matador showcases his comedic acting chops in a dark crime comedy with Greg Kinnear. Brosnan's departure from his suave James Bond image to play a flawed character earned him critical acclaim. The actor played a crucial role in shaping the physical appearance and emotional depth of his character in the film.
Landing a high-profile role like James Bond can be a blessing and a curse. Look no further than Pierce Brosnan, the sixth actor tapped to play the famous MI6 Secret Service Agent behind Sean Connery, David Niven, George Lazenby, Roger Moore, and Timothy Dalton. Brosnan portrayed the dashing intelligence agent in four Bond films between 1994 and 2004, resulting in a decade of popular exposure and confining typecast. One year after Brosnan took off the tux, the Irish actor delivered arguably his freest, funniest, and most well-rounded performance in a little movie called The Matador.

Just take a sneaky peak back on the movies we’ve covered so far on our Arnie Revisited series, and the Austrian Oak had already covered several genres in his rise from bodybuilder to Hollywood icon. Raw Deal and Commando were straight-up action movies, while his work as Conan was an epic mix of action and fantasy. You can even argue that The Terminator is a classic 80s slasher flick, and not simply the revolutionary sci-fi masterpiece it’s generally regarded as. However, he hadn’t managed to blend both horror and science fiction in any of his previous movies, in the way he did with the film we’re focusing on in today’s episode – Predator. It was such a huge success for both star and franchise that it not only helped to further cement Arnie as a Hollywood icon, but also created a franchise packed with sequels, a prequel,...

Aang's past with his Air Nomad parents remains a mystery in both the animated series and the live-action adaptation. Air Nomad culture emphasized detachment and equality, shaping Aang's upbringing and relationship with his parents. Aang's bond with Monk Gyatso was like a father-son relationship, but ultimately led to his separation and the start of his journey as the Avatar.
While Avatar: The Last Airbender did show snippets of Aang's past with the Air Nomads, the identity of his parents wasn’t explored. The Nickelodeon animated series, and now, live-action Netflix adaptation, focus on Aang's journey to train as the Avatar and restore balance to the world. Along the way, he makes a trusted group of friends and amasses allies, but the identities of his parents are never addressed. Aang doesn't speak much about his past beyond his training as an airbender.

Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender, a live-action adaptation of the beloved animated series of the same name, has thus far been approached by fans with a mix of cautious optimism and cynical dread. While the diverse casting, vibrant design work, and longer runtime compared to the infamous M. Night Shyamalan adaptation have certainly given fans hope; the departure of the original show’s creators midway through production and Netflix’s largely poor track-record with live-action adaptations of animated works hasn’t exactly inspired confidence.
But now that the show’s first of a planned three seasons (One for each of the original show’s “Books”) has finally dropped, how does it fare? Has the beloved world of Avatar finally received a proper live-action treatment? Did it need a live-action treatment at all? And how does it compare to the acclaimed animated original?
Avatar: The Last Airbender is better than I thought it would be.

Like any algorithm-led entity, Netflix has found something that works and it’s sticking to it.
In this case, “what works” is apparently commissioning live-action series based on beloved animated classics. The premier streamer’s first major attempt at this, Cowboy Bebop, didn’t go so well. Attempt number two was One Piece and that was relatively well-received. Now, however, Netflix’s live-action adaptation strategy is about to be scrutinized more heavily than ever with the release of Avatar: The Last Airbender.
Originally premiering on Nickelodeon in February of 2005, Avatar: The Last Airbender was a stunning achievement in animation. Series creators Michael Dante Dimartino and Bryan Konietzko crafted a lush visual world of Asian and Arctic-inspired cultures based on the four elements: Air Nomads, Water Tribes, Earth Kingdom, and Fire Nation.
Each society included special individuals known as “benders” who could magically manipulate their region’s element. All lived in...

Netflix's live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender has made a major timeline change, with the series no longer taking place over a year to account for potential future seasons. The removal of Sozin's Comet as a major plot point in the live-action series has significant ramifications for future seasons. Despite the timeline change, the series will still feature Sozin's comet, as seen in promotional footage, confirming that it will be established as a concept in the show.
Netflix's Avatar: The Last Airbender showrunner Albert Kim reveals that the live-action adaptation has already made changes to the show's timeline. The series is an adaptation of Nickelodeon's tale of a young boy blessed with powerful abilities of the four elements as he takes a stand against the devastating conquest of the Fire Nation. Netflix's live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender can use the lore and backstories established in the Atla comics to build a clearer and more nuanced world. The graphic novels fill in gaps and deepen the franchise, allowing the live-action series to incorporate elements from Legend of Korra and the comics from the start. By borrowing from the comics and supplemental material, Netflix's adaptation can answer crucial questions and flesh out characters and plots that viewers didn't see in the original series.
Netflix's live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender has one huge advantage over Nickelodeon's original Atla animated series — and it needs to use that upper hand wisely. Created by Michael Dante Dimartino and Bryan Konietzko, the three-season Avatar: The Last Airbender began airing in 2005. The fantasy-action show's epic story came to a conclusion in 2008. By 2012, it spawned a sequel, The Legend of Korra — though that isn't the only world-expanding narrative to follow Atla.

Pierce Brosnan – while most may immediately recognize him for his role in the James Bond film franchise, the Irish actor has had a prolific history in film, playing just about any role you can think of. Even decades after his on-screen debut, he's still putting on a good show for the audience, appearing in films like DC's Black Adam and, more recently, Netflix's latest action-comedy flick, The Out-Laws. But while it's easy to write The Out-Laws off as yet another Happy Madison film, let's not get too hasty.
The Out-Laws may be the first of more streaming films starring this storied actor, where the freedoms streaming allows and the tastes it caters to drastically differ from mass-market theatrical productions. In many ways, streaming offers a means to "cut loose" from an actor's established body of work, in a similar vein to how independent films serve the same function.

John McTiernan's career was cut short and he hasn't been properly celebrated. Starting with his 1987 classic "Predator" the hits just kept coming with "Die Hard," "The Hunt For Red October," and "The Thomas Crown Affair." McTiernan's signature is big, brawny, macho action movies with a human touch. His heroes, like the wise-cracking John McClane, are tough but relatable. Heck, he even made an oiled-up Arnold Schwarzenegger seem vulnerable. McTiernan's Hollywood adventure ended prematurely in 2013 when he went to prison for lying to the FBI. He was caught up in a dragnet involving crooked Hollywood private investigator Anthony Pellicano and served almost a year in the slammer.
The Pellicano case was supposed to be an epic Hollywood scandal. Vanity Fair predicted it would "bring down some of the town's top names." In the end, McTiernan was the only notable collar. He'd first hired the Pi in 1998 while going through a divorce.

The awards were presented at London’s Royal London Geographical Society and icons from the action genre attended, including Corin Hardy (“Gangs of London”), composer David Arnold (“Casino Royale”) Robert Davi (“Die Hard”) and Edgar Wright (“Last Night in Soho”).
Prominent film personalities who have worked with McTiernan and Armstrong conveyed their appreciation via video messages. Harrison Ford praised Armstrong, saying: “We’ve been doing this Vic for like 50 years! You’ve had the good sense to turn it into a directing job ‘cos this running, jumping and falling down thing is a game for the young guys. The audiences loved the work you’ve guided in the Indiana Jones films.

Adam and Rebekah Neumann are the subjects of Apple TV+'s upcoming series "WeCrashed." Based on the Wondery podcast "WeCrashed: The Rise and Fall of WeWork," the show explores how Adam's office space startup company went from being valued at $47 billion to $2.9 million in 2020.
As the wife of WeWork's founder and CEO, Rebekah served as a sort of executive to the startup and had major influence over the company's decisions. But WeWork wasn't her only interest. In addition to being passionate about yoga and spirituality, Rebekah dabbled in acting.
Though she didn't have the same success as her cousin Gwyneth Paltrow, she does have a few acting credits under her belt, including playing a Un Diplomat in 2010's "Fair Game," Sam in 2010's "Nomads," Ara in 2010's "Awake," and Katherine in 2021's "Aunt Louisa." Rebekah also wrote and produced "Awake," which starred Rosario Dawson, and is her most notable short film to date.

The Filipino documentary filmmaker was born in 1989. In her work, she is particularly interested in examining how transformations in life can be effected by mundane everyday actions. An alumna of the European Doc Nomads programme, she co-founded Svemirko Film Productions with Taiwanese director and producer Fan Wu in order to create a platform for author-driven documentary films. Last Days at Sea is her first feature-length film.
On the occasion of “Last Days at Sea” screening at Berlinale, we speak with her about shooting her first feature, the concept of the documentary, Reyboy and Karihatag, Jollibee fries and the memories of sea slugs.
My first question is a bit silly. When I was watching the film, I was actually really hungry. So, what stuck in my mind is if these Jollibee fries Reyboy likes so much are any good?
(laughs) It actually is. Jollibee is the Filipino version of McDonalds, I would say.

Generation C is being invaded by the B-Girls. 80s cult singer Josie Cotton, best known for blurring the angst of both liberals and conservatives with “Johnny Are You Queer?,” sees the science fiction claustrophobia arising from the coronavirus pandemic and wants to help. Cotton joined the Minutemen’s Mike Watt, the Runaways’ Cherie Currie, and Eddie Spaghetti on the song “Flatten the Curve,” to benefit the Jubilee Consortium and the Sweet Relief Musicians Fund. Everyone else, she advises to cuddle up with a bad movie. Cotton ventured beyond the valley of the dolls in a “so-bad-they’re-good” movie hunt to accompany this real life B-Movie scenario and re-released Invasion of the B-Girls.

James Bond wielded the knife with obvious skill. He approached, blade barely glinting in the light, and pounced, the knife coming down to join the awaiting fork. "I usually eat fruit," he said simply, "but today I'm in the mood for a good English breakfast." And with that, he began his meal. Okay, so it's not stopping arch-nemesis Ernst Stavro Blofeld from triggering World War III, or preventing Auric Goldfinger from turning the gold in Fort Knox radioactive, but it was my experience with agent 007 back in 1994. At the time, I was Senior Editor at Cinescape and somehow we ended up with the rights to do the magazine on the making of the 17th James Bond movie — and the first one to star Pierce Brosnan — GoldenEye. Even more incredibly, I was the guy chosen to fly to England to spend a few days on the set at Leavesden Studios, later...

Shock celebrates the 30th anniversary of John McTiernan’s dream-like thriller Nomads. Nomads is a difficult film; flawed, fascinating and enigmatic. It’s a movie that aims to reflect upon the messy mysteries of the human condition by cloaking it in a thin sheen of abstract fantasy. It’s a murky film, both visually and narratively, tonally out…

It’s hard to believe that the 1986 supernatural thriller Nomads is the first film directed by John McTiernan, who would leap from this low-budget effort to directing first Predator and then Die Hard, the greatest action movie of all-time and, if we’re being honest with ourselves, one of the best movies ever made in any genre. Nomads is meandering and dreamlike, ponderous and often nonsensical. Die Hard is airtight technical perfection. Nomads plays like the work of an indie filmmaker making an art movie with genre tendencies. Die Hard is expertly directed studio entertainment on a massive scale. The two movies could not be more different. And, yet, somehow Nomads is the movie that gave rise to one of the greatest action directors of the ‘80s and ‘90s. Funny, that.

A fascinating year for film, 1986. It was a time when a glossy, expensive movie about handsome men in planes could dominate the box-office, sure (that would be Top Gun). But it was also a year when Oliver Stone went off with just $6m and came back with Platoon, one of the biggest hits of the year both financially and in terms of accolades. It was also a period when the British movie industry was briefly back on its feet, resulting in a new golden age of great films - one or two of them are even on this list.
As ever, there were certain films that, despite their entertainment value or genuine brilliance in terms of movie making, somehow managed to slip through the net. So to redress the balance a little,...

The directorial debut of the once revered action auteur John McTiernan comes to Blu-ray release, a little known cult favorite known as Nomads. Considering this predates his most lucrative and iconic trio of films, including Predator (1987), Die Hard (1988), and The Hunt for Red October (1990) should be reason enough to revisit the title, even if on the surface it promises to be like any number of forgettable genre titles churned out in the same period. Beyond McTiernan, the film is notable as presenting us with the first starring role of Pierce Brosnan, playing an improbable Frenchman, as well as featuring supporting turns from notable cult figures like Mary Woronov, Frank Doubleday, and Adam Ant. Ultimately, the title’s perplexing and often inexplicable narrative thwarts its overall effectiveness as a thriller, yet McTiernan manages to convey expert skills as a visual artist.

August 18th is bringing horror and sci-fi fans a bounty of home entertainment choices this week, especially if you’re into cult classics and indie genre films. Titles arriving on Tuesday include newer movies like Cub, Ejecta and Closer to God as well as the latest from the Soska Sisters, Vendetta. Director John McTiernan at La Cinémathèque Française's masterclass.Last autumn, my friend and colleague, Christopher Small, and I took the vacation of a lifetime to Paris. Did we go to eat macarons, drink wine and sneak a peek at the Mona Lisa? No, no we didn’t. We went to Paris to watch movies. Movies? Yes, movies. Did we go to Paris to watch the latest Godard, visit the site of the first cinema screening or drink beer with friendly Parisians until 4 in the morning? No, but we did anyway. What Christopher and I went to Paris to do was to watch John McTiernan’s movies on glorious 35mm at the Cinémathèque Française. To understand how special this trip was, I should probably provide a bit of background information: my husband, Jake Barningham, and his best friend, Daniel Gorman, started Mission:McTiernan back in 2010. We’re starting 2015 at the beginning, or rather with beginnings…we’re starting at the beginning with beginnings. Confused yet? Great! All January long, Cargill and I will be discussing the first films of four celebrated directors. We’ll be reviewing these movies on their own merits, but also striving to discover the seeds of style that would come to define those directors as artists. We kick things off with the woefully overlooked Nomads, a supernatural thriller from John McTiernan…who would never again make a supernatural thriller. Pierce Brosnan stars as a French anthropologist who learns that sometimes dying hard is hardly the end. Yikes, even I’m not comfortable with that pun. In 1986, Jean-Claude Van Damme was the title alien in Predator before he was hurriedly recast. Ryan looks back at what happened...
In the mid-1980s, Belgian martial artist Jean-Claude Van Damme arrived in America with dreams of stardom. Possessing a finely-honed physique, thanks to years of training in (among other things) karate, kickboxing and ballet, he was ambitious and brimming with self-belief.
The acting bug bit Van Damme while he was still in his teens: he played “a bad guy with all the knives” in the 1984 French gangster movie Rue Barbare and, determined to further his goal of becoming an actor, hopped on a plane to Los Angeles. His first few years in America were, however, tough. He slept in a rental car for two weeks, and made money by teaching aerobics and martial arts, delivering pizzas, and working as a doorman at a restaurant belonging to Chuck Norris.

On June 12th, 1987, audiences around the country got their first look at that (to borrow one of the more quotable bits from the movie) ugly motherfucker that is "Predator." It heralded a number of promising new stars – most notably Arnold Schwarzenegger finally getting a bona fide blockbuster after sleeper hits like "The Terminator" and "Conan The Barbarian" – and director John McTiernan would emerge as one of the freshest, most stylish voices in action filmmaking since John Ford. The movie, which was produced by action luminary Joel Silver, and featured a platoon of hardened bad-asses on a clandestine mission in the jungles of South America, who come across something way more threatening than drug runners or Soviets, is a classic of the action sci-fi genre, a runaway train of a movie that has held up remarkably well in the 25 (!) years since its release. The film would go on to spawn two...

“In our [film school] textbook we learned that the films we loved the most were badly made” —Raúl Ruiz, Poetics of Cinema.
1. The most discernable facet that links Rollerball with the rest of its director’s work is the precision of its visual sensibility, and the hold it has over cinematic space and object positioning. John McTiernan has always struck me as being little more than a modest, intuitive, undervalued, and loving craftsman working within, and often playing to, the limitations of commercial, late 20th Century American cinema. What I think separates his films from those of his contemporaries is the level of dexterity with which he goes about constructing a sequence, introducing and repeating the motifs and personalities of a character into audio-visual editing rhythms, and with actually assembling, framing and choreographing an image, its participating models, and its sequential context. Though perhaps not McTiernan’s greatest entire, composite feature film,...

Tremors? Nightbreed? Sundown: The Vampire in Retreat? 976-evil? Are all on the list this year. And though there were not huge horror wins in sound editing through screenplays, the Technical Awards never cease to bring out the horror veterans. Notably Tim Drnec who contributed to such VHS classics as Alien Seed, Destroyer, and Prison won for his work on “Spydercam 3D volumetric suspended cable camera technologies.” An award also shared with Ben Britten Smith and Matt Davis who both also worked on Constantine.
But among all the winners, the Academy also honored some great loses in 2010. And though they mentioned some of our heroes, Dennis Hooper (Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2), Kevin McCarthy (Invasion of the Body Snatchers) and Dino de Laurentiis (King Kong), they did not mention Zelda Rubinstein or Corey Haim. But we will in this last section and the others lost to us last year.
So farewell fight fans and remember,...

HollywoodNews.com: Just a few days after Jan De Bont inked a deal to end his seven-year sabbatical, now fellow action god John McTiernan is apparently back in the saddle as well. McTiernan, best known as ‘that guy who directed Die Hard’, is set to direct an original picture entitled “Shrapnel,” which will apparently involve two war veterans who hunt each other in some kind of game. Unbeknownst to me until today, he also has a project apparently in production called The Camel Wars, which involves an Iraqi-American being sent to fight in the Iraq War. According to IMDb, said action-drama will be released on June 1st, 2011.
Unlike Jan De Bont, who directed four films over five years, made a fifth (“Tomb Raider: Cradle of Life”) in 2003 and then vanished, McTiernan worked relatively steadily for a good seventeen years, making eleven films between 1986 (“Nomads”) and 2003 (Basic). Of course,...

You know what really makes a man? A beard. Beards have been featured in films throughout the history of cinema, some great, some good, and some not so great or good. But over the years a few beards have stood the test of time and deserve a little attention. So without further ado ...
The Buz presents:
The Top Ten List Of The Greatest Beards In Horror History
10: Laurence Fishburne as Max in A Nightmare on Elm Street Part 3: Dream Warriors
Max had one of those beards that just looked like it belonged there. It was a part of his face. While it wasn’t the fullest or longest beard, it makes an impression. And if I’m not mistaken, it’s the only film in which Larry Fishburne had a beard, making it both unique and stylish. Let us hope he brings it back soon.

In case you haven't noticed, I tend to gravitate towards cinema that isn't necessarily perfect but rather is flawed, fascinating and enigmatic; movies that reflect upon the mysteries of the human condition by shielding their truths in a thin sheen of bloody mess and abstract fantasy. I like films that are hazy, a bit out of focus, out of reach; pictures that you keep revisiting in order to unravel their secrets, even if they originally set out to offer very few . John McTiernan's 1986 head scratcher Nomads is one such feature. This film is very close to my heart and baby...I aint even sure why.
Here's the sanguinary skinny...
During a long, graveyard shift in the ER, pretty young Doctor Flax (Lesley-Anne Down) encounters a beaten, bloody man (Pierce Brosnan) who initially appears to be a stark raving- mad transient. When the run down, sleep deprived MD leans in to check his pupils,...
