To say that Clint Eastwood is one of the most influential Hollywood stars and directors of all time would undersell the contributions of the star. From Westerns like Hang 'Em High to war movies like Kelly's Heroes, the star has been a symbol of American masculinity and stoic heroism since the 1960s. Looking at his most iconic characters and best films, it's not hard to see why multiple generations looked up to him as a genuine movie legend.
Clint Eastwood's career has seen him take on a variety of genres, but it's hard to deny his Western and action-thriller movies are his most iconic. Whether behind the camera or on the big screen, his films have given audiences a long line of hard-boiled heroes, skilled detectives and grizzled gunslingers. Ranging across genres, he has too many brilliant movies to count, but some are as close to perfect as it gets.

In the 1960s, he began making television appearances with roles in shows including The F.B.I., Cimarron Strip, and Here Come the Brides, with his film debut arriving in 1970, when he briefly appeared in Howard Hawks' western Rio Lobo as Lieutenant Forsythe.

Over the course of a career that stretched back to 1967, Peter Jason racked up more than 270 screen acting credits, turning in performances that inspired legendary filmmaker John Carpenter to name him “one of the great character actors in cinema” – and to cast him in seven different projects: Prince of Darkness, They Live, Body Bags, In the Mouth of Madness, Village of the Damned, Escape from L.A., and Ghosts of Mars. Sadly, Carpenter has now had to take to social media to break the news to his fans and followers that Jason has passed away at the age of 80. Carpenter wrote, “His first movie was Howard Hawks’ Rio Lobo. He was a dear friend and I’ll miss him terribly.“

Peter Jason, the extremely busy character actor who appeared in nine features for Walter Hill and seven for John Carpenter and portrayed the card dealer-turned-reverend Con Stapleton on HBO’s Deadwood, has died. He was 80.
Jason died Thursday in his West Hollywood home after a long battle with cancer, a family representative told The Hollywood Reporter.
Jason amassed more than 275 acting credits on IMDb alone during his seven-decade onscreen career that began in the mid-1960s with a comedy sketch on CBS’ The Red Skelton Show, and he made his big-screen debut in Howard Hawks’ final film, Rio Lobo (1970), where his character died in the arms of John Wayne.

Clint Eastwood is one of the greatest movie directors of all time. This past year, he released what might be his final film, Juror No.2, and it didn't disappoint. Throughout his career, Eastwood has cemented himself as a filmmaker of habit. He gets into a rhythm and follows trends. For years, Eastwood was dedicated to the Western genre, releasing Unforgiven, Pale Rider, High Plains Drifter, and more. Soon after, he found himself in the business of dismantling bureaucracy with Changeling, Sully, and Richard Jewell. Somewhere in between these two trends, though, Eastwood found himself fascinated with war. The war genre is wide, varied, and controversial, ranging from grandiose battle films to propagandized nonsense to unflinchingly realistic depictions of violence, all the way to haunting portrayals of post-war blues.

The legendary Clint Eastwood has not only established himself as a star actor but has also proved himself to be an able filmmaker. His previous film Juror #2 released last year to critical acclaim and he made that at the age of 94. He has won two Oscars for his directorials and has dabbled in various genres in his filmography.
One of his most celebrated films has been the Bradley Cooper starrer American Sniper. The film was nominated for a Best Picture Oscar and was on many best-of-the-year lists. The film also received backlash from several critics, who called it a celebration of war. However, Eastwood clarified his stance on war in general, as well as American Sniper’s stance on it.

Everyone's a critic, art's subjective, and everyone has their own personal favorites, so saying "the best of all time" is relative at best or even pointless. When Rotten Tomatoes applies that label to a film, though, it has a bit more weight, considering it's an aggregate site that usually represents a wide range of critics' opinions. In their list of the 150 Best Sci-Fi Movies of All Time, the absolute essentials, Rotten Tomatoes has placed 2001: A Space Odyssey at the very top. And it just so happens to be streaming for free as of New Year's Day; watch it on Tubi here.

Since the 1960s, action movies have given audiences some of the most iconic stories of all time, from '80s icons like Die Hard to modern masterpieces like John Wick. While the modern era has produced some of the genre's best films, audiences have decades of classic action flicks to choose from, including many that helped define them. The genre is one of the most versatile in Hollywood, something that has been true for decades.
When it comes to older action movies, the genre can be hit or miss, with the limitations of past decades forcing some movies to be too muted or campy, while others simply haven't aged well. Some films, however, remain a classic part of the genre, and have helped define cinema for the decades since their release. From stories about soldiers going behind enemy lines to hard-boiled detectives bringing down gangsters, the action genre has decades...

The film's title comes from the Korean War's Battle of Heartbreak Ridge, where Eastwood's character was awarded the Medal of Honor. Clint Eastwood may first have been known as an actor, due in part to his starring roles in Westerns, including the iconic Dollars trilogy, but he's now just as well known for his directing. Eastwood's first directing gig was Play Misty for Me in 1971, and he followed that film up with others like High Plains Drifter (1973), The Outlaw Josey Wales (1976), Heartbreak Ridge (1986), and, of course, Unforgiven (1992).
Eastwood continued to appear in films throughout the 2000s, but the 2010s saw his career shift to one more focused on directing. He gave audiences films like American Sniper (2014), Sully (2016), and Richard Jewell (2019), while also doing double duty as star and director in The Mule (2018) and Cry Macho (2021). At 94 years old, most in Hollywood would be long retired, but Eastwood put out yet another film this year, and it's been a success with critics and audiences.

With some of the mega-blockbuster hits coming out in recent years, it's easy to overlook some of the classic action movies from decades past. The 1980s were a golden age for the action genre, focusing on unstoppable action stars, witty dialogue, and fast-paced action that left no time for reflection. With iconic franchises starting like Rambo with First Blood in 1982, some films got lost in the shuffle and, while maybe not impressing or gaining widespread acclaim at the time, more than deserve another watch to appreciate their true brilliance.
The 1980s produced some of the best action films of all time, such as Midnight Run and Heartbreak Ridge, that demonstrate the versatility of the genre, showing a combination of humor, emotion, and heart-pumping action. Clint Eastwood remains one of the most iconic actors in Hollywood history, and he's worked regularly in movies now for 70 years. Though he perhaps remains best known for appearing in Westerns, with Dollars Trilogy classic The Good, The Bad and the Ugly (1966) being a particular highlight, he also worked extensively in other genres, taking on the crime thriller with Dirty Harry (1971), and appearing in war movies like Where Eagles Dare (1968) and Kelly's Heroes (1970). Eventually, of course, Eastwood would also make the jump to directing.
Eastwood, who is now 94 years old, has directed 45 movies over the course of his career, his first being Play Misty for Me (1971). Eastwood's most iconic directorial efforts, however, would come somewhat later in his Hollywood journey, and they include movies like Unforgiven (1992), Million Dollar Baby (2004), American Sniper (2014), and Sully (2016). Eastwood would also often star in his directorial efforts, including a 1986 war movie that chronicles the American invasion of Grenada.

Clint Eastwoods Juror No. 2, which could be the directors swan song, is doing good numbers, despite its limited theatrical release. The movie, which opened Nov. 1 and stars Nicholas Hoult and Toni Collette, J.K. Simmons, and Kiefer Sutherland, had an opening three-day weekend total of between $260,000 and $275,000, per Screen Rant.
That weekend total comes from just 35 theaters in the U.S. reporting data, making for a respectable per-screen average of about $7,500. Reports suggest that Juror No. 2 will not surpass a 50-theater release in the U.S. In comparison, Venom: The Last Dance, which had a budget of more than three times the budget of Juror No. 2s $35 million, had an opening weekend per-screen average of $12,348. Smile 2, which had a similar budget as Juror No. 2 had an opening per-screen average of $6,361.

War War II films dominated American cinema in the 2000s after the overwhelming success of The Thin Red Line and Saving Private Ryan. One of the standouts of that decade was Letters from Iwo Jima, the film that fleshed out the Japanese side of the war with human drama.
Letters from Iwo Jima streams on Paramount+ this November along with a handful of war dramas. Acclaimed for portraying good and evil from both sides of The Pacific War, the film depicts the Japanese perspective of the Battle of Iwo Jima. It's a companion piece to Flags of Our Fathers, which portrays the same battle from the perspective of U.S. forces. Both films were shot back-to-back but with entirely different ensembles; Letters from Iwo Jima featured an all-Japanese cast headlined by Ken Watanabe as General Tadamichi Kuribayashi, a commanding officer of the Imperial Japanese Army.

To most audiences, Clint Eastwood is the movie cowboy. Eastwood is so synonymous with the Western, especially its deconstructive Spaghetti Western phase, that it's impossible for some to see him as anything but a cold gunslinger. While he'll always be The Man With No Name, Eastwood was such a once-in-a-lifetime movie star that he also left an irreplaceable mark on the wider action genre's most famous niches. Cases in point: Dirty Harry for cop movies, and Where Eagles Dare for World War II movies. Not only is Where Eagles Dare one of Eastwood's best military-themed movies, but it's also one of the best World War II movies ever made.
That said, one of the biggest misconceptions about Where Eagles Dare is that it's a typical Eastwood movie. Although he's one of the movie's biggest names and one of its most important characters, it was anything but a solo vehicle in...

Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure is a popular manga and anime series that has captured many fans’ wildest imaginations, thanks to its uncanny actions, exaggerated drama, and weird fantasy elements. But you would be quite surprised to know where the author, Hirohiko Araki, actually got all this idea from.
The answer lies in his childhood fascination with Western movies, especially those starring the iconic Clint Eastwood.
Giorno Giovanna from Jojo’s Bizarre Adventures | Credits: David Production
At the time, Araki was still a student at elementary school, when he watched the 1966 classic For a Few Dollars More along with his father in theatres.
Although he was not old enough at that time to comprehend the plot, he felt strong emotions towards Eastwood as he played the lone wolf character. This formative experience shaped Araki’s ideal hero archetype and influenced the making of his most famous work, Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure.

Clint Eastwood is more versatile as an actor and director than he's given credit for. Because his portrayal as a vigilante police officer in Dirty Harry and a steely gunfighting bounty hunter in The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly are so iconic, it's easy to equate him as a cop or cowboy solely. Between romantic dramas, musical comedies, space adventures, neo-noirs, and biopics, there are only a few subjects and genres that Eastwood hasn't touched. As a seminal figure in action movies and Westerns, the combat field was a suitable backdrop for Eastwood, who gave one of his most charismatic performances ever in the boot camp-set war drama with a sharp comedic edge, Heartbreak Ridge. While the film, compared to most of his other work, never touches greatness, Heartbreak Ridge is endearing due to Eastwood's innate movie star charm that radiates off the screen.

Plot: 1908. Chief (Mario Van Peebles) returns from years of hiding in Mexico to claim stolen reparations gold hidden in the hills of Montana but is chased by Angel (William Mapother), whose rationale to the gold leaves a trail of dead bodies.
Review: Mario Van Peebles is in the enviable position of being a writer, director and actor who can make the kinds of movies he wants with the people he wants. Review: Mario Van Peebles is in the enviable position of being a writer, director and actor who can make the kinds of movies he wants with the people he wants. Mario Van Peebles made a big mark on cinema following in his father’s footsteps, Melvin Van Peebles, to be a unique, prominent voice for the African-American community in cinema. He would make many appearances as an actor, including working with fellow gunslinger Clint Eastwood on Heartbreak Ridge, as the sword-wielding Kane in Highlander: The Final Dimension, and taking on the monumental task of portraying Malcolm X in the Michael Mann film, Ali. However, in 1991, New Jack City, which co-stars Ice-t, would put Van Peebles on the map as a director, and he would parlay his run with movies like Panther and the 1993 western film, Posse, in which he also starred.
Peeble returns to the Western genre in a semi-sequel to his 1993 movie that also sports an ensemble of impressive names. Outlaw Posse has Van Peebles working both in front and behind the camera again, and would even have him...

Deep Fear, the low-budget sharks-and-cocaine thriller, was filmed in Malta instead of the Caribbean where it is set. Malta's water SFX facility and tanks served as convincing stand-ins for Caribbean waters. Malta has a long history of being a popular filming location for various movies, including Ridley Scott's films like Gladiator and White Squall. Deep Fear's underwater cinematography was led by Mark Silk, known for his work in James Bond: No Time To Die.
Given the movie's surprising success on Netflix, many viewers are wondering where 2023's Deep Fear was filmed. The low-budget sharks-and-cocaine thriller stars Gossip Girl's Ed Westwick as Jackson, though the film's central protagonist is Madalina Diana Ghenea's Naomi, a world-class yachtswoman. An accomplished seafarer, Naomi sets out on a solo trip to meet Jackson in Grenada. However, in true survival film fashion, Naomi's three-day jaunt takes a dark turn when she's knocked off course by a storm.

Actors who served in the military can bring authenticity to their war movie performances, drawing on their own experiences and understanding of military life. Sidney Poitier lied about his age and served as a military hospital assistant, gaining insight into the challenges faced by soldiers suffering from post-traumatic stress. Clint Eastwood's near-death experience in the military informs his role as a troubled drill sergeant in Heartbreak Ridge, adding depth to his performance.
War movies are often judged based on their accuracy, and some actors can benefit from real-life experience serving in the military. Millions of young men were conscripted to fight in World War II and the Korean War, so it's no surprise that some of these men would later go on to become successful actors. Other actors chose to join the military for other reason, either because they were seeking a better life or because they had a passion to serve their countries.

In 1993, Mario Van Peebles dabbled in the Western genre with Posse. Peebles took after his father, Melvin Van Peebles, who was a notable filmmaker in the blaxploitation genre in the 1970s. Mario appeared as an actor in films like Rappin’, Heartbreak Ridge starring Clint Eastwood, and the infamous Jaws: The Revenge, which featured an apathetic Michael Caine. He would also head up his own projects as a writer and director, much like his father. One of the more popular films Peebles would be known for is the 90s street crime classic, New Jack City.
Peebles is returning to the director’s chair for a new feature he wrote called Outlaw Posse. The film is a Western that bears no connection to the similarly titled Posse. Highland Film Group has picked up the distribution and has shared a first look at the film with a new picture exclusively shared by Variety.

One of the most fascinating aspects of Clint Eastwood's 65-year film career has been his willingness to play not just ornery cusses, but, in many cases, a downright bastard. From The Man with No Name in Sergio Leone's "Dollars Trilogy" to nonagenarian drug smuggler Earl Stone in "The Mule," Eastwood has always sought out messes of manhood: lousy husbands, absent fathers, and straight-up killers. If retired rodeo star Mike Milo winds up being Eastwood's acting swan song, he might stand as one of the kindest characters in Eastwood's oeuvre.
What kind of self-respecting woman would take up these heels? That's what the female characters in Eastwoods' films are often wondering. The answer, of course, is that Clint's laconic nature masks a boyish playfulness that can be irresistible (especially when he's using an orangutan as his wingman). He's a tall drink of water who plays it gruff until he flashes that devilish grin,...

He's been the Sheriff of a Texas town and oversaw the investigation of John Doe, but to scores of moviegoers, the late R. Lee Ermey was America's favorite dehumanizing leader.
A United States Marine Corps staff sergeant with experience in South Vietnam from 1968 through 1969, Ermey was medically discharged in 1972 but found a second life as an intimidating authority figure on the big screen. The Kansas-born actor would soon serve as technical advisor to Francis Ford Coppola on the epic 1979 war drama "Apocalypse Now," wherein he also played a 1st Air Cavalry helicopter pilot. But it was in Stanley Kubrick's confrontational war drama "Full Metal Jacket" that Ermey carved out a role so iconic, that when misfortune visited Ermey during the film's shooting, the notoriously perfectionist filmmaker paused production rather than recast the role.

Thanks to the likes of Taken, the John Wick franchise, the presence of Jason Statham, and even Netflix's Extraction, there has been a real appetite over the last decade or so for no-nonsense, take no names, shoot first, then shoot again action movies. Well, an upcoming movie that is sure to appeal to this fanbase is Seized, starring action cinemas worst kept secret, Scott Adkins, for which a trailer has now been released.
The movie's official synopsis is as follows: "Hiding out with his son Taylor on the Mexican coast, Nero hopes to put his violent Special Forces career behind him. But after Nero's home is attacked and Taylor is abducted, the mysterious Mzamo orders Nero to slaughter the members of three rival crime syndicates. If he fails, Taylor will die. Now, with bullets flying and bodies dropping as Nero completes his mission, he races to find Mzamo's hideout and seek revenge.

HBO Max is set to enter into its second month of existence. And you know what that means: it’s Christmas in July!
HBO Max’s list of new releases for July 2020 is highlighted by one prominent Christmas movie: last year’s Emilia Clarke-starring Last Christmas. But the real cause for Christmas in July is all the exciting animated DC content coming our way on the first of the month. July 1 sees the arrival of just about every animated Batman project ever created. July 1 also features the arrival of just about every Justice League animated series ever created as well.
If that weren’t enough, July 1 is also when every live-action Superman movie (save for Man of Steel) makes it streaming debut. July is starting to look like a month where HBO Max establishes its real potential and geek culture bonafides…despite an at-times difficult rollout.

When HBO Max launched last month, DC fans hoped it would be the premiere place to go to watch all their favorite DC content. While the streaming service did have an impressive array of films and TV shows available on launch, there were a lot of notable missing titles, too, due to pre-existing licenses getting in the way. As time goes on, though, more DC properties will end up on the site. Case in point: this July will see a whole heap of superhero content go up on HBO Max.

Lennie Niehaus, who went from Stan Kenton sideman to Clint Eastwood’s movie composer during a nearly 60-year career in music, died Thursday at his daughter’s home in Redlands, Calif. He was 90.
Niehaus’s two dozen films for Eastwood include original scores for the best picture-winning Western “Unforgiven,” the Charlie Parker biopic “Bird” and the popular romantic drama “The Bridges of Madison County.”
The two met in 1953 at California’s Fort Ord, when the two were in the Army during the Korean Conflict. “I used to play jazz jobs at one of the beer clubs on the base, and Clint was tending bar,” Niehaus wrote in an essay about the actor-director for his 1996 American Film Institute Life Achievement Award. “I used to go off post and play in a little jazz club in nearby Santa Cruz on Sunday afternoons, and he would be there.”

Cinematographer Jack N. Green is proof that nice guys sometimes finish first — even in Hollywood.
Born in 1939, the San Francisco native traveled a long-rising arc in his career, which includes distinguished stints shooting aerial sequences for documentaries and some of the most iconic films of the 1960s, eventually becoming director of photography on a run of Clint Eastwood movies and more recent comedies such as “The 40-Year-Old Virgin,” “Hot Tub Time Machine” and two “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” movies.
Green’s parents, Trudy and John Sr., had a shared fascination for photography and rigged up a home darkroom that made a strong artistic impact on their son.
Graduating from high school and barber college at 17, Green planned to make that job his career. But all that changed when he was befriended by shop regular Joe Dieves, a former World War II combat cameraman. Enamored of Dieves’ stories, Green soon joined him,...

Interviewing Charlie Saldana in the quiet of his North Hollywood home, the 79-year-old working key grip still exudes the cool confidence of someone who’s spent a lifetime in partnership with one of Hollywood’s great directors: Clint Eastwood.
Saldana still possesses an actor’s looks, with a salt-white mustache and a full silver mane. He began his career building scaffolding for Disney’s “Pollyanna” in 1960, following military service in the 101st Airborne Division. Joining the grip union, he was employed by Hollywood’s blossoming TV industry on “The Dick Van Dyke Show,” “Gomer Pyle, Usmc” “Hogan’s Heroes” and “The Mod Squad.” The neophyte grip learned his craft well.
Born in 1939 to Charles and Josephine Saldana, Charlie was raised with a strong work ethic that drove his rise in the industry. “Gaining grip skill was a layered, educative process,” he says.

Clint Eastwood is one of those rare Hollywood stars who is a legend both in front of and behind the camera. While he's best known to most audiences as an actor, with decades of iconic performances, but he has also established himself as one of our finest filmmakers as well. In recent years, the multi-hyphenate has focused his energies more on filmmaking and less in acting, with his last on screen performance coming in his 2012 baseball movie entitled Trouble With the Curve, where he played an aging baseball scout. During an appearance at the Cannes Film Festival, the Hollywood icon suggested that he eventually will make his return to acting.
Variety attended a master class being put on by the actor-filmmaker at the Cannes Film Festival, where he discussed a variety of topics. The filmmaker stated that he does miss performing "once in a while but not often," while hinting...

As Mel Gibson’s “Hacksaw Ridge” opens around the country, a movie that is playing well for critics and audiences is tainted by a gifted filmmaker with a sticky scandal.
The deja vu is fresh, after “The Birth of a Nation” director-star Nate Parker tried to promote his movie while being shadowed by his 1999 rape trial, and the surprise news that the accuser committed suicide in 2012. After a rapturous response at Sundance and at the Toronto International Film Festival, the movie made a lackluster opening in October. His Oscar hopes? Over.

Like all films that Mel Gibson has directed, “Hacksaw Ridge” contains amazing heroics and spiritual transcendence. And, like other Gibson films, it’s violent. The person responsible for capturing that mayhem was Australian cinematographer Simon Duggan (“The Great Gatsby,” “I, Robot”).
With Sydney, Australia doubling for West Virginia as well as Okinawa, he used the Alexa with Panavision Primo Anamorphic Prime lenses, and the Red for hand-held shots.
“Everything was quite contained, including the battlefield, and we tried to simplify down how much we saw and really focused on the performances and stayed really tight to the storytelling,” Duggan said.
To help create that intensity, the second unit placed Black Magic pocket cameras among stunt guys when running through bombs, which allowed for the creation of dramatic cutaways.
While action was a key storytelling element, “Hacksaw Ridge” hinges on pacifism — and Gibson calls it a love story. It’s based...

Directors’ trademarks is a series of articles that examines the “signatures” that filmmakers leave behind in their work. This month, we’re examining the trademark style and calling signs of Clint Eastwood as director.
Clint Eastwood became an american film star in the 1960’s thanks to his acting performances in a number of western films. As he began to branch out with new roles in front of the camera, he sought out to have more creative input into the types of film projects that he would be involved in. One way he was able to accomplish this was by creating his own production company which eventually allowed him to work behind the camera as director. His first film as director was 1971’s Play Misty For Me, which was well received by critics and did well at the box office. HIs second film as director was High Plains Drifter (1973), in which he also starred.

As reported by Deadline, character actor John Hostetter—who had a recurring role on Murphy Brown and did voiceover work for a handful of anime films—died last week from “cancer complications.” He was 69.
Born in Brooklyn but raised in Maryland, Hostetter was a stage actor before making the transition to film and TV. His first movie role came in the 1979 Arthur Hiller comedy The In-Laws, and from there he moved onto a whole bunch of minor roles in big shows like CHiPs, T.J. Hooker, Knight Rider, Remington Steele, Family Ties, and Moonlighting, as well as the occasional movie role in stuff like Into The Night, Heartbreak Ridge, and the Bill Cosby vehicle Leonard Part 6. However, his most recognizable role came in 1988 when he joined the cast of CBS’s Murphy Brown. The show went on to become a big hit for the network, and ...
